  Doke has two issues out of his control. He has to be careful about fouling when the post is fed or rebounding. KU has no significant backup for him. The 3’s cause long rebounds in many cases and are out of his reach. I know he is working on his rebounding game, but sometimes he just has to watch. Just IMHO…

  @Jayballer54 Considering how long it has taken, it seems plausible. I posted before I believed that if he is not cleared by the first day of school (16th?) there is a good chance he loads up the Charger and leaves, only 11 games left after that.

  SO KU holds serve at home. Oklahoma beats Tech putting some air in their tires. West Virginia holds at home over a poor Drew Baylor team that yet again can’t close the deal. Someone needs to beat West Virginia. It’s gonna be KU on Monday

  Sam is our new guard depth. He gets better and better, with each minute on the floor! He has his mind right about defense. He takes defense personal! Right now… I see our team anchor players as Mitch and Sam is coming up. These guys have made “hustle” their calling card. I’ve been wondering what is up with Vick. In my head, he shouldn’t be worn out at his age and his condition. But I said this long ago… that NONE of us have played at the intensity these guys have. Their athleticism is at another level than most of us. And that means it carries it’s own drain when put to the test. I learned that when playing at the highest level I played at… far, far below D1! And a million miles away from Kansas basketball! I learned what exhaustion was when I did that. But these guys are at a different level… and I don’t know the level of exhaustion they go through. It surely must be extreme even though they make it look easy out there. I hope we see more and more of Sam. He already does some things better than all of our other guys. He’s probably the only player we have that has used a hedge against the drive. When we decide we want to get serious about winning… we will scout our opponents well, and we will use tools (like hedging) to DISRUPT the strengths of our opponents. That means… hedging and playing tight on players we want to deny the ball… hedging against left or right side drives of driving threats (related to which side they primarily use)… This may sound like I’m being critical about Self and his coaching. No. He can’t teach these things if our players aren’t up to that level yet. Until we get our guys really focused on defense… forgetaboutit!

  @cragarhawk Interesting post! Most late-game strategy is usually to get the ball in the hands of your best scorer and then clear out. Sometimes it is made more difficult with ball screens. I’m not a fan of that, most of the time because ball screens can fail easier at the end, when defense knows it has to stand up. In the least, the screener better have good offense himself, opening for a potential pick and pop/roll or otherwise you just invite a double-team on your #1 scorer. And then there are the “twists.” Those are the secondary options. So your big scorer is being doubled in his iso and is fighting to drive for shooting space… then he feeds another open shooter to take the winning shot. I love to see this happen. I love to see unexpected heroes!

  Something has certainly been off with Vick. I’ve also thought he looked injured. Or tired… or perhaps it’s just a mental thing. Either way an obvious slump for him right now. Hopefully it isn’t an injury. We sure need his game.

  HOF Coach at the 2nd winningest school in history seems to get the recruiting scraps year after year and has even resorted to a Transfer Pipeline. Dots connected. I also think a factor is that a lot of kids just want to go where they are guaranteed playing time. Bill won’t do that.

  @JayHawkFanToo There was also a long stretch of time where USC was the favorite for Preston because of his mother’s relationship with the school. Most people thought he’d end up there. Once he ended up at Oak Hill he “opened” up his recruitment up again. At that time he was considering USC, KU, Maryland, UK. Syracuse got involved late, even getting him on campus and Indiana wanted him. He had plenty of programs after him despite him bouncing schools. When KU missed on Ayton, Preston got a lot of attention from Self and we ultimately signed him after he visited for Late Night. Ayton was the key to how we really got Preston. If KU had signed Ayton Preston goes somewhere else.

  I’d like to see Mitch stretch defenses by hitting that trey a little more consistently, Keef style. Speaking of Keef, I’d like to see if Angel could talk to Momma P. Angel was such a parental presence at KU. She was the one that inspired the FOE. Momma P could use a good dose of Angel. Paging Angel, please teach Momma P some FOE.
