Just how amazing has his season been?

      13, 20 point games.

Who would have ever thought he would average 20 points a game? Incredible

On the verge of becoming the 1st Big-12 player to avg 20 + 5 assists a game.

      Possible front-runner for POY.

14th place on the All-Time Scoring Record with 1,622 points. He still has at least 10 games left in his career, 17 if all goes as planned.

      What else am I missing?

No matter what happens he’ll go down as one of my favorite hawks ever!

    • This Team

“You know, you look at this team and everybody, including myself, has said what’s wrong with this team all year long. We don’t do this, we don’t do that or we’re too small or we don’t have enough depth or we don’t play hard enough or we’re not hungry enough. And all they’ve done is they’re the No. 3 overall seed, and they’ve won two games in the tournament and are going to the Sweet 16. We’ve got to win two more games to get where we want to go. But I’m so proud of our kids and nobody can say that they haven’t had a great season. Now we have to go make great (turn into) special.” -Bill Self

Has Self said anything better all season long?

I’m pumped for Friday. We’re going to win

Time to give this guy some props for his defense and intangibles on the court so far this year.

His defense on Saturday against Paschall was outstanding. He was locked in. Talked after about the film he watched on how to guard him and its refreshing to see how much detail he put into that matchup. Overall I thought he did as good a job as we could have hoped on him.

We all know his 3 point shots are prayers, he constantly clanks the first free throw at the line and he’s struggled finishing on drives but man does this kid compete on both sides. He’s a valuable ball handler as we saw when Nova went to a full court press. It’s nice to know if Dotson is struggling or in foul trouble that we have a ball handler that can get into the offense. He has great hands and awareness when looking for steals. More importantly we have a guy that can matchup with someone’s best scorer 1-4 positions. Great to have.

He scores 1 point but his impact on the game seemed to outweigh what the box score says. Now if the staff could only get that shot fixed…

    • Buddy Hield

This guy deserves his own thread.

What an unbelievable performance last night. Dare to say that tops Kevin Durant’s performance here years back but after playing 54 of 55 minutes and putting on a clinic all through the OT’s I do say this was the best performance by a non KU player ever in this building.

And he does it with class… If you saw his post game interview with Scott Van Pelt he was all class even though you could sense he was upset leaving here without a victory.

And our fans, the one’s that were left gave him a standing ovation. Name another fan-base that will do that for a kid on the other team. Not ISU, Not KSU…KU is all class even its fans, although sometimes we all have our moments.

I’ve been a fan of his for a while but I gained a whole new appreciation for him. He had moments last night that reminded me of how Steph Curry is playing in the NBA. He’s that good, I do think he’s got a chance to become an NBA all-star the way he carries himself and the hard work he has put in to be where he’s at.

I’m jealous he’s not in a KU uniform, I’m jealous Self didn’t see what kind of player Hield could become, but who could have?

Thanks Buddy for putting on a show but respectfully missing that last 3 in triple OT. I will never forget that game.

    • Some team stats through 8 games

3rd in points per game in Conference- 22nd national

2nd in shooting % in conference- 5th national

tied for 1st in 3pt %, really improved that # lately- 17th nationally

worst FT shooting team in the conference- believe there are only 11 teams worse in all of D-1. Yikes

3rd in the conference in rebounding- 61st nationally

2nd in assists per game conference- 16th nationally

Surprisingly 3rd in Blocks in conference- 34th nationally playing mostly 4 guard lineup…

KenPom has us 8th nationally in Adjusted Offense, 6th in Adjust Defense.

      So far so good.

      @kjayhawks

I think it’s way early for that position but the trio of Haggerty/Johnson/Bashir will not be easy to matchup against. Without Peterson, sure just about everyone in the Big-12 will be better.

They don’t play a ranked team until January so hard to put much stock into these early games. They can score but they can’t defend anyone either.

Yeah, there’s a lot of uncertainty with the Peterson situation until we see him out there again. Self has created that with the lack of transparency & honesty. We get vague updates that lead to all the speculation.

The scouting report on him is he is extremely competitive, so I agree he wants to be out there but it’s a delicate situation due to many factors having nothing to do with KU. He’s got a brand and career ahead of him and this kind of injury could derail the path they are on. In a stacked draft class he certainly has incentive to get back out there. I’m not sure how much his stock would truly be hurt by sitting the rest of the season. He’s been heavily scouted already but certainly there would be questions. Certainly the only real thing that he can lose is $ in the short term. Hypothetically if he sat the season to get healthy and prepared for the draft I still believe he’d be in the Top 6 picks.

Hopefully he’s out there again soon. There isn’t much to say until there’s a definitive timeline for his return.

This is a bubble team at best without him for an extended period of time and even that might be pushing it. We are not going to see KU play like they did against Duke most nights. People can cling to moral victory all they want, it was still a 12-point defeat and for the final 25 minutes of the game KU was not in a real serious position to win the game. They kept it close as much as they could but Duke was always in control (as were the refs).

We all hope the biggest benefit right now without Peterson is forcing guys to step up. White certainly has, Bidunga has when he’s actually on the court. Tiller and Council show flashes. The rest have a ways to go. We have clearly seen who’s ready and who’s not. I really hope this adversity helps them become the team they want to be, but we need Peterson in order to get there.

    • RE: Duke Game

Got a chance to rewatch the game and the 2nd half finally.

I’m not as optimistic as others are which is okay. I hope that changes but so far I’m seeing a lot of overall similarities to the past few years.

Foul trouble really forced Self’s hand with subs late in that first half and seemed to completely disrupt the momentum they had going. Some individuals are going to have to figure out how to defend without fouling. We saw first hand we very little depth once again. Not having a 3rd big that is trusted is definitely a big one. Elmarko and Mari do not seem capable of playing any kind of extended minutes.

We very well could have won this one with Peterson. He changes everything and without him right now we are seeing a lot of weaknesses. Until he returns we have a clear cap on our ceiling.

Defensively I thought they competed hard when defending regularly but the double teams on Boozer were exploited and they made us pay just about every time. A lot of the double teams just seemed unnecessary, and they weren’t working and there weren’t adjustments. Felt like we made plays easier for Boozer and others by constantly being in chase mode on the rotations.

It’s clear this bunch is not an efficient shooting group outside the paint. Way too many missed opportunities from the perimeter from guys we expect to produce. Council’s shooting has to to improve as every team we’ve played has already identified him as the weak point on the perimeter. You can see the lack of confidence when he shoots as well.

Hopefully this game was beneficial for next weeks continued ACC tour.

      @drgnslayr

Mbiya already is jacked city. He’s just supremely raw with skill at this point. Certainly, seems like a good mold of clay. Not sure we’ll ever see the fruits of the labor from him. Doesn’t sound like he plans on staying around for years.

Tiller is 20 years old and yes he enrolled early last year to get ahead on rehab. Certainly seemed like KU lucked out there with how talented he is and how high his ceiling is. Can you get him back for a 2nd year is the big question already. I would not assume anyone on this current roster is coming back because that’s the reality we are dealing with now.

Kudos to those that watched til the end. Sounds like they gave what they got but couldn’t execute in the last 5 minutes. Foul Trouble in the front court is a major issue. The refs sucked but this is not a disciplined team when it comes to fouls.

Tiller has fouled out in both games against P4 competition. Flory has 3 or more fouls in all but 1 game so far and makes a lot of careless fouls that take him out of the game.

It sure looks like we only have 7 players if we ever get Peterson back. Elmarko and Mari are unplayable imo. Neither has developed a lick here.
