A couple decades ago I had a roommate who was big into soccer. Even with his day to day excitement about the sport I still couldn’t muster the least bit of interest. It’s like a more boring version of hockey without fights and I don’t like hockey. Nah I’ll stick to KU basketball year round.
I think this team needed this type of win tonight. It wasn’t pretty but we saw some good individual performances from guys who really hadn’t impacted the games leading in. This gives me confidence we can go on the road and get some Arizona St revenge.
Moore finally made shots and had some good energy besides some horrible D. Big Dave looked a lot more comfortable later in the 2nd half. Love his effort and motor. If they can get him under control as the season goes by then he starts putting himself on the map for minutes. I think Self has to find a way to play him because he rebounds and runs the floor as good as any big we have.
@BeddieKU23: I Big Dave. I’m so looking forward to watching his development. To me, he has “KU” written all over him and I’m really excited.
@justanotherfan I appreciate both your experience and your knowledge, but how are you so sure it is a problem of trying to avoid mistakes? It seems equally likely to me that he is perhaps not trying hard enough to avoid mistakes. He has been as likely to drive with nowhere to go as he has been to be too tentative, and some of his shots–feet not set, not squared to the basket–do not show signs of being cautious. Likewise, a few passes to places where his teammates are not.
I’ve spent most of the last two games watching Grimes exclusively when he has been on the floor. He’s incredibly indecisive with everything. He seems to decide to do one thing, then change his mind halfway into the move.
He will drive to nowhere rather than looking to attack his man off the dribble. If he confronts even the slightest defensive resistance, he will either dribble back out or pick up his dribble.
He will sometimes shoot as an afterthought. There have been moments where he has been looking to pass and then shot as sort of a last resort.
He needs to simplify the game for himself right now by doing two things.
Make it his goal to play harder than everyone else on defense. Completely lock in on that end. If that produces some transition opportunities, all the better.
Hit the offensive glass. Grimes hasn’t had more than 4 rebounds in any game this season. With his athleticism, that should not be the case. He needs to look to crash the offensive boards more.
Those are both “effort” things rather than skill things. Sometimes, when the skill stuff isn’t happening, you can get thrown off, but effort doesn’t get into slumps.
In end of game situations I’m concerned who KU can rely on to make them. So far the only consistent FT shooters we have are Dotson & Dedric. KJ has good form as well but he doesn’t play much. Marcus routinely misses the first and neither Grimes/Vick get to the line enough to rely on. Team definitely doesn’t have the shooters.
I’m looking at it in terms of Saturday. Villanova knows KU only has 1 good post player which Nova lacks. I can imagine the gameplan will be to double Dedric when he gets the ball and go at him on offense to draw fouls. Wright has out-coached Self in both recent meetings so you know he’s going to zero on something for Saturday. The first game without Doke didn’t really expose the fact that if Dedric can’t play 30-35 minutes a game this KU team is in a world of trouble.
I’ve had a busy day was only able to watch bits and pieces (listen mostly). Looks like yet again the defense played good enough to win. Sadly this team is only about 5 plays from being bowl eligible. I felt like the refs must have been the same crew as in Manhattan. They didn’t cost us the game but several missed calls that weren’t called against Texas and several weak calls on KU. Maybe having a well known and respected coach next season will help get a few of these. I really like this group of seniors and would like to thank them for their hard work. They definitely should be credited for starting this turnaround that’s coming, they could’ve half assed it after knowing Beaty was out and no bowl was happening. Thank you Guys!! Thank You to Coach Beaty, I believe he did the best to his abilities to turn this place around.
Now I understand the flagrant foul for hooking in the paint. I first saw it called in another game and didn’t see anything, just two players side by side waiting for a rebound. But, the replay shows Mitch with his arm entwined with the Cagin player. Clearly, wrapping the other player’s upper arm is an effort to limit his ability to rebound. Hooking will be cleaned up in a couple of weeks. As a TV viewer, it’s very hard to see unless you know what to look for.
As I rewatch the game, Fran made so many dumb comments. For instance, after a Doke dunk, it was “That’s what happens when you don’t double him!”. Doke had 2 men hanging on him and a third running right at him.
“Use every TV timeout to stay close.”
Just awful… 🤯
