  “I guess they missed UK’s final game last year.” You guessed right. And there is a reason for that. Calipari has already screwed up big time. His all-star team would get enough of the light without anything extra, but Calipari has tripled the stage lights on this team with his comments… like…“we are reaching for an undefeated record” and “yes, I perform my best when there is more pressure.” First off… why would he think his group of freshmen would perform better with more pressure? Compare that to Self… and how he does what he can to defuse pressure. I definitely wouldn’t mind if we drop a game or two before New Year. Knock us down in the poles, shrink the media spotlight (especially on Wiggins), and help us develop a chip on our shoulders we can use in March. Calipari’s team is floating around stuck in his delusion of grandeur. But who knows? Maybe they’ll figure it out and use it to their advantage? That’s what is so great about college basketball. Every year is an experiment in personalities, team motivation, struggles… I know we better take nothing for granted! Even if Wiggins grows wings, he’s still a human, and he’ll be playing beside 4 other humans. We have to stay focused on the prize, and stay disciplined away from the media chaos and magazine covers!

  In the Jay Bilas interview, Wiggens said how he hoped to meet his brother in the NCAA tourney. That got me thinking. We all know how the NCAA likes to create drama in the tourney with match ups even though they say they never plan them. (i.e. KU vs. UNC). I could see them matching up KU vs. WSU to create some hype. 2 schools from the same state that do not schedule games against each other, and now 2 Wiggens brothers matched up against each other. Would make for an interesting story line.

  Pretty cool look at Freshman classes and their impact. Makes me excited and nervous about this team! I do think we are looking at a different level in freshman then in KUs recent history. One thing I really got from this is that we haven’t had many game ready Freshman, besides a few different guys. It would have been interesting to see what Self did if there were a couple more veterans on this team.

  While I agree that Frankamp’s debut was not what I expected, we should not be quick to call for red shirt after one exhibition game; Conner can flat out play, Check his play with the US team in international competition where he was the leading scorer and maybe even player, playing alongside other highly ranked players. Let’s give him a few more games to show what he can do before we start penciling him in for a red shirt. The comment that he would change status to “walk on” is utterly ridiculous, no insult intended to the poster.

  Xavier has always been a class act, quiet and unassuming; his dad and brother not so much. He has been back many times to Lawrence and has been a good ambassador for KU. Like many players his career had a rocky start, starting with his agent driven hold up before he even played one game and put him behind other players, development wise, before the start of his first season and never quite recovered from that. Looks like the Lakers are a good fit for him and he is starting to show flashes of his true potential; hopefully it will workout out well for him

  Great points by all above–here’s my take as I was at the game, trying to judge all players: Tharpe will be a vital part of our offense, as his experience and leadership will be huge, as it will in training Mr. Mason… 2)TBlack was IN position alot, and rebounds are ALL about effort and positioning. And he was able to get some stickbacks (against a D2 school), so more observation needed to gain an appreciation of what 260lb Tarik can do for us. Agree with incremental improvement in Traylor and Lucas. Embiid did everything I expected, good but green at times…Ellis=Ellis, nothing to add. Selden played under control and unselfishly, I thought he was NOT looking for his own shot. Liked his energy. Wiggins tried a bit of everything, threes, pullupJs, set-play lob dunk, and his patented spin move/drive. 16pts in a herky/jerky sputtering team offense is a good sign. 6)Mason looked serviceable. Liked his play and glimpses of his decision making. 7)Connor Frankamp: looked the most out of place. I watched him on defense meticulously and his head-swivel to look for coming picks was, I thought, “slow”. If I was a quick guard with the ball facing him, I would drive HARD the second Frankamp looked away. He is a defensive liability (but had 1 batted entry pass), and if he cannot hit the set-play 3ball (like Teahan as a frosh), maybe he needs to redshirt just to trade his frosh youth for his age 23 season. He is so thin, and even when he was dribbling, I saw NO attack mentality out of him. Clearly thinking a lot, and is mesmerized by the size of athletes on the floor in a college game, and mostly just on KU’s own roster. Redshirt Connor, and use Niko as the emergency 4th guard (Mason #2, Selden emergency #3, and Niko as last-chance-saloon backup #4). But, Connor could prove me wrong and come out on FIRE against FHSU…so I’ll see what the 2nd impression is…

  I have always been a fan of Andrew White. Last year he made very mature comments on waiting his turn and having to earn playtime at Kansas. He has a great family and a solid head on his shoulders. Bill Self is one heck of a recruiter, i swear he takes individuals character into account when he is looking for players for his squad. Pushups after the game! Midnight workouts! No wonder his guns have doubled in size since last season. Watchout Big 12 we’ve got some bench players that are going to bring it!

  Agreed @Mr Miyagi. White doesn’t look as flashy as Wiggins, but was very good tonight. I think he not only played himself into rotation, but might have a shot at starting too. It showed how much a year under Coach Self, one can improve. There is a huge advantage in a sophomore over a freshman unless one is an extra ordinary talent like Wiggins. Another good sign is Lucas tries really hard and may have chances to contribute. Obviously he is not as conditioned as the other bigs like Black and Embiid. He needs to push himself more. One game in the book, and there is a lot of be excited about.

  I had Drew penciled in for the redshirt this year as well. It makes sense given that HCBS seems to prefer redshirting sophomores to freshmen. I believe he does so in order to let them see the court and have in-game experience before they even redshirt so they get more out of it. It’s looking more like Frankamp now. I expect all 3 will be excellent players when we see their whole KU careers though.

  My things to watch: 1. How do the top 3 freshmen perform against the cupcakes. 2. How do the 3 redshirt eligible freshmen perform against the cupcakes. 3. Which 3 redshirt eligible freshmen has the best attitude to be a Jayhawk in the long run. 4. Which redshirt eligible freshman will benefit the most from a redshirt year and whether he appears to accept the fact that he will be more valuable in the later year. The way Coach Self put it, redshirt is a benefit trading a 18 year old body for a 23 year old body. What is there to lose? On the other hand, Coach Self may not grant one a redshirt year if he doesn’t think he won’t contribute much later. So this is my watch number 5. All body gestures from my TV since I won’t hear any rumbling up close. Let’s hope ESPN3 comes through. Rock Chalk time now!

  Both twins look like they are in for a long NBA career. That’s great news. They continued to work hard after leaving KU and deserve earning a big paycheck for many years to come!
