I suspect the NBA “farm system” will continue upping its ante to challenge NIL money so they can continue to pouch college kids to leave early. It’s misguided greed that probably hurts the NBA more than help by not letting the college system develop players a little longer in a more wholesome world. It’s not easy to create a sentence where I have “college” and “wholesome” in the same sentence.

@Bosthawk I hear you on always waiting for the new season to begin. I buy atleast two college basketball yearbooks every season (though I could get all of the info online). When they hit the stands I feel good, knowing that some KU bball is about ready to start.

Agree. It’s about calling representatives of a shoe company a booster. But given the ubiquity of contact between shoe company reps and coaches, if they come down on us and not on all the others, it will feel like being singled out.

@Bosthawk I don’t think its as easy as saying there’s a formula or template used. As you’ve seen with all the stuff from the trial some players had “bidding” wars that upped the price. Generally though the higher ranked players would get the most. I will share just a few details of the case I mentioned I’m familiar with, regarding a 2019 recruit. There was a bidding war for his services among multiple programs under the same shoe company affiliation. It was just a matter of which deal was the right deal for this player and family. There were short term and long term benefits offered from all in some fashion. If a family/guardian/handler is involved, more then likely they are approached first. If you want influence over someone’s son, you probably start there. I think it also depends on the player. Did they become recognizable talent early on? Late bloomer? If your child is a HS freshman playing on a high profile AAU team imagine how many events and people cross paths with each other over the course of 3+ years. To your last point about KU 4 year players. I would put the % at 50% likely, maybe even a low figure. Many 4 year KU players are still Top 100 type recruits.

@Crimsonorblue22 You are probably correct. If there was a year, this would have been it playing a heavily under seeded, disciplined team in Penn. I understand Penn was the #16 team with the highest percentage of bets and bracket picks to upset a #1 ever.

@JayHawkFanToo I am of the belief that our coaching staff hasn’t really stepped in to work on Doke’s FT stroke. It appears obvious, just from watching Doke at the line. I couldn’t describe his technique if I had to. He bends his wrist at an angle under the ball, much like youth players do before taught some technique. And then… if he misses a FT and has a second FT, he usually tries a different stroke. We have read before that our coaching staff usually doesn’t like to get in there and address player’s shot technique. This is more of a Bill Self concept where he wants those major changes to happen in the off season. In this particular case… we simply can’t wait until summer. We could easily go down in March because of Doke’s FT faults. We haven’t really seen many intentional fouls on Doke supporting a strategy of “hack a Doke”… but you know, and I know, that is going to change in March. Tournament teams step up a notch in competitiveness… they are going to use it to their advantage, and why wouldn’t they? I know I would be screaming at our coaches and players if we have to deal with a situation like a Doke that can’t even make half his FTs but we failed to take advantage of it!
