I don’t see Dotson leaving after this season. While he has incredible speed, his athleticism isn’t eye popping. He’s a backup in the NBA right now. I think he’s at least back next year, maybe the year after as well. His size, while solid, isn’t on par with a lot of NBA PGs. Remember, Grimes likely will move to the point in the NBA. He’s at least 3 inches taller than Dotson. That’s the type of player Dotson has to be prepared to go against every night in the NBA. I don’t think he makes that leap after this season. Steph Curry is thought of as a smaller player, but he’s listed at 6-3 and people attack him defensively because of his size. That’s the challenge Dotson faces at the next level.
“Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. – they say I can’t play defense.” ~Malik Newman
In the locker room afterward, someone handed Newman a final box score. He looked, not at his glorious line but at Allen’s. The Duke senior scored 12 points, but hit only 3 of 13 shots. And of course, there was that critical miss. (USA Today)
Unfortunately that is what most of us believed for a long time but information that came up recently indicates KU was one whisker away from getting the death penalty for a number of violations by Larry Brown. Apparently the penalty was deserved, that is not to say that if the name was Duke or Kentucky, KU would not have gotten away with it.
Ditto everyones sentiments. I love our Jayhawks, always will. But, they just got their asses handed to them by Okie state. I am officially tempering my expectations even further for the remaining guaranteed games. 1 Big 12 tourney game and 1 NCAA tourney game.
I am of the belief that our coaching staff hasn’t really stepped in to work on Doke’s FT stroke. It appears obvious, just from watching Doke at the line.
I couldn’t describe his technique if I had to. He bends his wrist at an angle under the ball, much like youth players do before taught some technique. And then… if he misses a FT and has a second FT, he usually tries a different stroke.
We have read before that our coaching staff usually doesn’t like to get in there and address player’s shot technique. This is more of a Bill Self concept where he wants those major changes to happen in the off season.
In this particular case… we simply can’t wait until summer. We could easily go down in March because of Doke’s FT faults. We haven’t really seen many intentional fouls on Doke supporting a strategy of “hack a Doke”… but you know, and I know, that is going to change in March. Tournament teams step up a notch in competitiveness… they are going to use it to their advantage, and why wouldn’t they? I know I would be screaming at our coaches and players if we have to deal with a situation like a Doke that can’t even make half his FTs but we failed to take advantage of it!
I don’t know. We only have these silly exhibition games to base our opinions.
From what I have seen so far, I’d say the #2 scorer could very well be Billy. I do think it is clear that he may have the second best scoring tools on the team, just behind Devonte.
So far, I just don’t see Vick stepping up with scoring consistency. The key word in all of this is “consistency.” I’m not even sure we can get scoring consistency out of Devonte! I’ve been on him for his previous 3 years for taking games off.
I think Doke will become a bigger threat throughout the year, as he acquires more tools and also creates more of a connection with the rest of the team harmony.
