Arterio Morris
-
@Crimsonorblue22 This isn’t Juan’s fault….I don’t want his name included. He can’t force another grown man to do or not do something. Could have been anywhere that night but fact he isn’t mentioned says he wasn’t present.
This is morris fault no one else
-
@Kcmatt7 - yeah, KU shouldn’t have given the guy a 2nd chance. But he’s now failed and should be kicked out immediately. And I mean “kicked”!
-
@kuballin10 I wasn’t saying it was.
-
I think it would be asinine to fire Self and Goff at this point. What makes it look bad is the fact that it just now got released tho supposedly happened on the 26th of august and several people around town knew. Now if it’s proven that they tried to sweep it under the rug. I’d be pushing for their removal immediately. They took a chance on this guy and it blew up in their face. @Kcmatt7 name a D1 coach in football or basketball that hasn’t had bad apples. It happens everywhere and gets swept under the rug at a lot of schools. You never really know someone til you do sometimes. The BTK killer was a well respected man in his community, thought to be a loving father and husband.
-
-
@Kcmatt7 I’ll also add KSU let a player involved in a drive by shooting finish out the season. Alabama let a guy who armed someone with a murder weapon play with zero consequences. If true no question he’ll be gone from this team.
-
@kjayhawks Boy am I glad I’m not a fan of those teams. Would hate to be in a comparable situation …
-
Dang, haven’t had a chance to check the news til now. That sucks for all involved.
Sure hope for all involved that the allegations are unfounded. He’s suspended, so not sure if it’s Self reading the room, or he knows. You figure if he knew, he’d be booted, not suspended.
Self sure took a chance by bringing in Arterio. As I mentioned in Wissox’s thread, public perception about the program and Self has to be very low now. It could get even lower if the IARP ruling comes in with bad news.
Pressure for Self to resign? I hope not. He does seem like he’s title or bust lately.
I guess it’s piling on to continue to say this was a bad signing. Getting worse.

I really wasn’t even going to mention him but they are room mates. I don’t think any other members of the team were present. People also need to remember there is a difference between witness and eye witness.

There was a reason KU was the only big name in on him. Red flags everywhere.

@BShark I have some serious soul searching to do to decide if I watch another game with Bill at the helm.
This was totally avoidable and is so incredibly frustrating.
This is so fucking dumb. Sorry
A girl in Lawrence may have been raped by a guy we knew had DV issues and still recruited him. I’m sorry I’m not the forgiving type.
-
unfortunately , I don’t see any option other then him being let go. -Just not a good look , the kid has some issues hopefully he is innocent at THIS POINT though doesn’t look good and with KU’S history of things just not a good look.
Rreally good talent but not putting it to use IF this turns out to be true , with the whole thing that ended up being dismissed before and now this - -not can’t afford this on the team - just not good
-
@kjayhawks I agree it would be asinine to fire Self and others. They did their investigation. They knew they were playing with fire. And we’ve discussed the fact that Self has a penchant for trying to give kids a second chance. Sometimes this works out; sometimes not.
The administrators were probably not trying to sweep anything under the rug. I don’t think they have a legal responsibility to make this (allegations) info public (until the justice process is completed and a conviction is made.)
However, most of us have a sense that wrong-doing by certain individuals or institutions needs to be made available to the public sooner, even before the justice system has engaged (and throughout the process). That work is typically done by journalists. It’s a double-edged sword, of course because not all the facts are available early and that can lead to speculation. Responsible journalists will work the leads for a while and gather facts before they publish, which is probably why the delay (Aug 26 to Sept 15) on this story.
Anyway: I’m sad and angry at Morris all at once.
It would be interesting to get Self’s perspective if he will ever take another risk like this on a kid. The stakes are very high for the program. But, of course, if he ever takes a risk that pays off, a kids’ life is changed forever, and one could argue, those are the highest stakes.

@TYOHawk That’s where I’m at.
Bill took him with the criteria of 1 mistake and buh bye
See ya morris it’s over just threw it all away
Teams better without him
I agree. Nitpicking here, but technically, the team may actually be worse without him, but the program is undeniably better without him.

@BShark Thanks for the details “… all 3 girls left screaming… “ wow. To me, that sounds off. so he is accused of raping one of these girls? All of them ? Love to know more details. This whole thing sounds just plain weird . Something not right here.

I definitely agree there are some oddities in the story. That detail was one that stood out to me as well.
Would love to know what security is like at McCarthy. A no visitors policy after a certain time would be wise… I know during my time at KU we had to check people in with IDs and everything after like 10PM.
-
And can Morris be so colossally stupid, knowing that he is under a huge behavior microscope, with any minor misstep and he’s gone, to then force himself on one or all of these women? Sadly like so many rapes in college where it comes down to a “he said she said” case, to do that with that many witnesses?? And the accusation is rape, not indecent exposure, or indecent assault or attempted rape. Rape. Apparently other teammates are also named as potentially corroborating witnesses - not to the alleged rape, but to seeing the women in the dorm at some point that evening. None of this seems to make sense, until we get more details.

Would assume one of them is the primary accuser/victim. Wish I had more details but I got it from someone that lives across the hall from Terio and Juan.
I can ask about the current rules if you’d like.

Yea, i wanted to say something about the three girls left screaming thing earlier, but thought it’d be in bad taste. Something does sound odd here. Not sure we’ll ever know the details unless one of the girls starts "X"ing about it.
How is McCarthy set up? The players each have private rooms? Guess it doesn’t matter, but with four people in there, something sounds weird indeed.

They share with another player typically.

I’m curious as to whether it potentially opens up a scholarship.

Can’t recall ever hearing rape instances that happen when the girl’s friends are also in the room. I agree with some of the others, smells a little off. Its not even a he said / she said situation. Its a he said vs she plus she plus she said.
Peeps saying Self and Goff should be fired over this are nuts.
-
@RockkChalkk Are the players’ rooms just one large room like a dorm room, or a common room with bedrooms off it?
If the latter, 2 could have been in the common room while Arterio took one into his.

ya making comments like that are insane , you don’t ever want to go to another game Self Coachs - - that’s on you. Saying he should be fired is - -out there -that’s not happening
-
Should have never been here. Horrible decision by Self, and hopefully that was all.

kinda what i was wondering. i guess we could go look at the preseason arrival pics…that’d probably tell us people who aren’t in the know.

Shows 2 bedrooms with common room, so the girls being separated entirely possible.
(Thanks to the sender!)
-
Im sure Arterio said the right things to get here. Who takes a 2nd chance like this and blows it? Sure Self took a dumb swing on this kid. Im also sure there other redemption projects that did not blow up in Selfs face. Self will learn from this but I dont concur with the calls for his head. I doubt we will see a high risk transfer like this under Self again.
-
Hypothetically if Morris is cleared of all charges, would anyone be OK with him staying? Doubt we ever get that level of clarity with this situation, but even if we did I’m having a hard time coming up with a scenario where I wouldn’t want KU just to be done with him. This is your second chance, so it is your responsibility to make sure you dont put yourself in these situations. Plus him tweeting what he did after the news broke goes to show he doesn’t understand the severtity of the situation.
-
Nope he must go
-
I don’t see this as something Bill should be fired over at this time but it’s a tough subject on accountability. He deserves criticism, at minimum if this is something that gets Morris removed from the team & lands him in legal trouble, again. Without more facts I guess we just wait and form our own opinions as we see fit.
-
Yeah truth is that we live in a world where Beard can choke his fiance and get a $3mil+ salary within 6 months. There no way that Self is losing his job for this even if we wanted him to

What did he tweet?
-
The KC star article mentioned him retweeting someone who was complaining about false accusations ruining lives. So the content wasn’t the worst, but not knowing when to lie low shows even more poor decision making.

Just to make sure I understand correctly, if Morris is cleared of wrongdoing, people still want him kicked off the team because why? Because he allowed himself to be targeted for a false accusation? How does one prevent others from scheming against you and making a false accusation? “I’m sorry Arerio, but since someone lied about you now we must remove you from our team.”
Edit: Come to think of it, if we start removing players based on false accusations, whats to stop a bunch of KState fans or Texas fans from falsly accusing each of our players one by one until we’ve kicked everyone off the team? lol
-
I may be a minority here, if he is innocent, he should not be kicked out.
We all make mistakes especially in teens and college days, he made one in TX and will pay for it. It does not mean he cannot be a good citizen going forward.
-
The problem is the difficulty discerning true innocence vs smokescreens. The feeling that a 5-star gets away with awful stuff just bc he is a 5-star is a tough thing to shake.

I certainly get what you’re saying.
But an incident at 5:30AM from someone who has already shown the capability to commit violence against women is a lot different than a honey pot scheme from an opposing fanbase. I think we can likely all agree with that.
I think an indefinite suspension until this is sorted out is fine and the university taking a stance of “Due Process” is an appropriate policy. If the allegations are proven true, I do think Bill should take some responsibility for bringing him on to a campus in Lawrence. He should at the very least also be the one who pays the eventual multi-million dollar settlement to this woman as well. That won’t happen, but it should.

Agreed, it’s very hard to give him the benefit of the doubt
-
@RockkChalkk your edit is quite inflammatory, this obviously wouldn’t be the case with any other player. Morris has a history of domestic violance and only got a plea deal because the victim wasn’t going to testify. That case has plenty of evidence that he shows little respect from women and it is unlikely he would have gotten off if she did. Could he have changed? Yes, but in my eyes he needs to prove that and a new accusation popping up is not how you do that.
I would maybe be comfortable with him staying if there is some sort of combination of no evidence of any wrong doing, victim has a history of false accusations/proof she is looking for a payout, and his behavior that night by witnesses is impeccable. But knowing the case was already forwarded to prosecutors makes me think the likelyhood of all that minimal.
-
@Kcmatt7 If it was up to Bill this never gets out.

Hmmm. Suddenly find myself considering site names that are less KU basketball specific…

Honestly I’m still not fully sure anything truly terrible happened. Still a chance he plays for KU later in the season IMO. I was just saying Self would have preferred to handle this internally.
