Greatest comeback of all time

  • I realize that we came from 19 down versus MU and UCLA, however, there was a lot of time left in both cases, 14 Dow with 2 and change is the GOAT. Phog and Doc have to be high fiving in heaven.

  • This is not the best comeback. That honor belongs to the 2008 Jayhawks who came back from 8 down with a little over 2 minutes left to force OT against Memphis in the national title game. That game will always be the GOAT for KU comebacks because it was in a national title game.

  • At Allen.

  • @Fightsongwriter Then Missouri still tops tonight because it was Missouri. WVU will never mean what Missouri did to KU.

  • The degree of difficulty tonight far surpasses all other home comebacks.

  • Yes this was the hardest

  • Not to motion how thin we were once 2-3 guys fouled out.

  • @Fightsongwriter Degree of difficulty may have been higher tonight, but the stakes were much higher in that Missouri game. Senior day, conference title on the line, and final game against Missouri in AFH. Thise are all relevant factors when discussing greatest comebacks. If KU loses tonight, they still have a 1 game lead on WVU and Baylor for the Big 12. KU and WVU don’t have 170 years of animosity between their states.

  • I think that’s why it was called Greatest “Comeback.” of all time.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 *9 down. I agree, that comeback was greater, because of the stakes.

We were thin before the opening jump!

    Wasn’t it down 9?

If WV won the game tonight, a lot of us would be talking about how WV is the new Mizzou,… On a lot of levels, particularly the flops, hacks, and the less aesthetic style, they are picking up where Mizzou left off…

  • @Fightsongwriter I agree. Best comeback ever. Better than Memphis. Better than Misery. Why is that? Because it JUST HAPPENED. So this comeback is the best. I will tell you- I had no idea we would come back, and I always give KU every benefit of the doubt. It was electrifying. This is what Bill Self said about it "

  • Look at Frank - he is also wearing the “MENACE” bracelet like Josh! Frank’s is so deserved.

  • @Fightsongwriter The comebacks against UCLA, Missouri at home, the National Championship Game comeback, and the EJ comeback against ISU are all number 1 seeds as far as I am concerned. I have them all on my one line. Basically, they are all great and I watch games like this in the off season, because they always put a smile on my face!

  • @KansasComet I have watched the 08 NC every year after we have lost in the tourney. Takes the sting away a bit.

  • Because we have been shut out in Morgantown, I’m starting to get the rivalry vibe with WV. Huggy’s guys play hard and are absolutely intent on beating us. The Missouri rivalry had such an historical background that it was just natural to hate everything Missouri. My desire to whip WV comes from our complete shut out in Morgantown and my perception that the refs help WV prevail. 34% FG’s. How in the hell did we win this one? That’s the real mystery for me. Anyone else bothered by the 58 foul calls? At least Frank was a monster at the stripe. RCJH

  • @stoptheflop And to be out rebounded and have a lower 3 pt %, though we made 1 more than them.

Frank could have shot 10 more free throws cuz he got murdered on numerous other drives to the hoop and the zebras of course swallowed their whistles.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 Ok , let’s agree it was the 2nd best resurrection of all time after the one in Jerusalem? We were dead. DOA. Comatose. Corpses. Worm food. Flat liners. Drinking embalming fluid. Pushing up daisies. The un-living. Zombies. Kaput. Holy cow that was unreal!

May have topped Lazarus and Jarius’s daughter…ok sorry, that may have gone too far😉

  • @Fightsongwriter We have NEVER come back from 14 down with less than 3 minutes left …never. Don’t let others steal your joy. It is ridiculous to minimize this win, imo.

  • @KUSTEVE You can also make the argument the conf championship was on the line here too. We lose last night and at Baylor and who knows?

  • It’s all a matter of opinion I suppose. All the comebacks that people mentioned were incredible, and took some miraculous plays to make them happen.

That was a hell of a comeback. That’s all I can say.

  • @Fightsongwriter The team’s psyche was on the line. Lose that game, and it’s 2 straight home losses. lose that game, and we walk into Wacko with a target on our back. Lose that game, and Huggy’s thugs own us. Biggest game of the year so far. bigger than Dook. Bigger than Kensucky. Bigger than Baylor. We have never, ever come back from such a large margin in such a short time. It completely changes the team’s self image, imo. No longer do we have the spectre of blowing a big lead at home hovering over us- we’re the team that doesn’t quit, and finds a way to win. This will be the game that changes this team, imo.

  • @Fightsongwriter That’s the way to be! I recommend it to everyone. Find games that you really like and watch them. One of my favorite games is the tournament win over Arkansas in 1991.

  • This still doesn’t feel like a win to me. The come back was incredible, but it was only necessary because we couldn’t score field goals. That’s my question: How is WV able to come into AFH and score more easily than we do on our home court?. Perplexing, really. All season opponents have shot well in AFH.

  • @KansasComet I love that game. We smoked them.

  • I read that KU had 3 field goals at one point in the 2nd half before scoring 34 points in the last 3 minutes of regulation and overtime. I mean improbable comeback doesn’t even do it justice. West Virginia had us dead in the water. If it wasn’t for some timely missed FT’s by them and some timely made 3’s and forced turnovers we would have met our demise. Insane finish, no other way to put it.

Yeah - I had posted in the game thread that we had just 3 field goals through the first 15 minutes - 2 by JJ and the other I believe was Frank. Missed bunnies and 3 point shots well off the mark - mostly front rim. Shooting 30% from the field. We were dead in the water - until we weren’t.

Insane, or inexplicable turnaround - esp. the 4 deep 3 pointers made by DG in the last 2 minutes and OT - after he had done nothing all game. We erased a 14 point lead in just over 2 minutes - and 21 point turnaround in 4 minutes against a quality opponent. Still not sure it really happened???

  • @DCHawker

    feels like a dream

  • @BeddieKU23 It’s still as sweet this morning-Likely nails down lucky 13 I think. This thread has waaaaaay too much “I’m right/you’re right” 💩crap on it. This sonofagun was so improbable I could hardly believe it myself & Im a top 10 🏡 homer every day of the week. If ya aren’t allowing yourself to enjoy this one, medical help may be an option… I keep some 🍾 spirits 🤚 on hand… & have success most of the season. Will get a little sideways now & then but usually no 💦 sweat.

  • @stoptheflop We were playing the game with a 6 1/2 man rotation versus a team that rotated 11 players. Playing the Hillbillies is an exercise in extreme exhaustion, as they run fresh bodies at you the whole game, and wear you down. With our short bench, that takes a toll. Our number 1 player is sick. We have played the most difficult schedule of any team in America since December 30th. The loss of Doke was large, as it practically eliminated our rim protection. If our guards had hedged on the perimeter, we might’ve seen Tyler at guard, because we surely would’ve fouled out one of our big 3.

  • From the ESPN game thread near the end of regulation, when I admit had lost every shred of hope…

“Kansas on the ropes against West Virginia: Frank Mason struggling shooting 1-7 FG, Landon Lucas with four fouls & Jayhawks haven’t made a 3-pointer in the second half (0-5)”

I still can not believe we won that game.

Other coaches will replay the last minutes of this game and say to their teams, “See that? 14 points down with under 3 minutes. Don’t ever give up, just play harder. It ain’t over til the fat lady sings.” Well, that and maybe “Dang, those Jayhawks are scrappy bunch.” :satisfied:

  • @StLJhawkLandon Lucas with four fouls…”

You would think ESPN could at least spell Landen’s first name right! :-1:

  • @KUSTEVE Didn’t you want to see Brady Morningstar come in off the bench during the first half and show them how defense was supposed to be played? He was fired up every time they showed him. Brady kinda looks like Tyler:

  • Everyone’s favorite Aunt Fran had a “compliment” for KU after the game.

@KUHoops comeback wouldn’t have happened without Bill Self’s preparation & confidence in his team. It’s a good arrogance earned w/practice.

Arrogance?!? What a lovely human being…

  • @RockChalkinTexas Another one that gets me is when they would spell Wayne’s last name as…“Seldon”. Landen/Selden…hmmmm…seems to give them fits, just like our full court press.

  • I don’t know about “greatest” comeback.

I think the Mizzou comeback was “greater”.

This was likely the most “improbable” comeback because KU simply wasn’t shooting the ball well enough to mount a comeback until basically they started shooting the ball well enough to mount a comeback.

The effort was there, but the results just weren’t, which was what made me think they wouldn’t come back because you have to make shots and I wasn’t sure KU could make enough shots (2s or 3s) to make a run. I thought they could get the stops, but I wasn’t sure they could actually get their shooting going.

In the other games, you knew the run was coming, and there was plenty of time to make that surge. But in this game, there wasn’t much time and the way we were shooting (under 30% from the field at one point) made me think that a run was incredibly unlikely.

  • @dylans

I saw that; it really is what I call a left handed compliment and Fran could not help himself from using “arrogance” as he has characterized KU fans as being “arrogant” before …it is not arrogance, Fran, it is confidence.

  • @Fightsongwriter

The rebounding margin was very small, 2 defensive rebounds, and considering how poorly KU shot most of the game it really should have been much higher since bad shooting translates to more defensive rebounds.

  • And here I was pouting about the 5-6 missed bunnies, dunks, etc. we missed during the game as the lead was stretched to 14 at the 3 min. mark. Not pouting now!

  • @hawkmoon2020

    couldn’t agree more!

  • @JayHawkFanToo just like Marsha fans, haters are going to hate. Just keep winning.

  • @JayHawkFanToo nobody should be surprised! We’ve been saying it awhile. If there are any doubters, this should finally seal the deal! Just got home, slept a couple of hours and headed home. No work today. Got a freebie KU bag, certificate from Guinness for breaking record!🤣Love the throw back uni’s too!

  • @Crimsonorblue22

I bet the first 37 minutes were like a gift from heaven to Fran…and the rest of the game like a nightmare…

  • @KUSTEVE Get a big smile on my face every time I watch it! We really played ball.

I looked up lots of sites where people were trying to express their ideas about confidence vs arrogance. I liked this one especially:

Arrogance = I’m superior to you Confidence = I believe in my capability

I think Fran used the phrase “good arrogance” and said it has been “earned” to express how Bill Self is so confident he exudes “We are superior to them” (arrogance) to provide his team with the level of belief they need to overcome a ridiculously adverse situation. The same thing Self did when he expressed total confidence against Memphis. Fran was not talking about the fans in any way.

You would have to ignore the words “earned” and “good” to make it into a slam of Self.

  • @mayjay

You are forgetting that Fran has talked down to KU fans in the past and that is not the only time. I guess we all see things through different lenses and to me, and based on past comments, the Fraschilla post was not an honest but a veiled left handed compliment…color me a cynic when it comes to all things Fran.
