@jayballer67 I agree. KJ looked earthbound. Like a bird that couldn’t fly.
-
We did well recovering when bidunga and storr had 4. Didnt miss a beat.
-
@kjayhawks I think Zach hustled and tried his best, but he seemed a little out of control.
-
Do we want Dook to win this?
-
@approxinfinity I think last years lack of depth would’ve been exposed in a game like this.
-
@wissox no question with the foul trouble we had tonight
-
Anyone have the plus and minus’s for this game?
-
+/- Hunt 11, Juan 13 , Mayo 10, Rylen 16, KJ 8, Coit -9, Storr -3, Flory -4, Zach -2, Kease 0
-
Diggy has struggled the last couple games.

Last year when they played their “C” game they tended to get whipped. I’d say this is fair to call a C game or possibly worse. This team will get so much better.

Yeah I am thinking his minutes likely fade away when Shak returns.
-
@BShark Likely so unless it causes spacing issues.
-
Who is Shak?
-
@wissox Shakeel Moore. He fractured his foot and is rehabbing his way back. He is a guard from Mississippi St. He is known as a good defender.
-
@patoh3 Thanks, forgot about him.
-
Warning, half a rant here! Read no further if you were happy with tonight’s performance!
Son of a biscuit lover, that was 100% ugly!!!
I know we won, but I’m am just steaming over the defense tonight. Very un-Self like.
I’m counting the days until Self blows a gasket over this truly clueless defense. So many possessions had entry level mistakes tonight. When I can point em out, you know something is very wrong. Wow. Ugly.
And then there was one possession where MSU got FOUR offensive rebounds!
I’m thankful we won, but not looking forward to watching this pathetic display. It’s gonna be a long season. The offense better bring it every night or we’re gonna struggle.

I dont want anyone cut from the rotation. Solid personnel management tonight.
I think Self ruined the mojo and flow by starting Zeke tonight. He should have waited til Oakland.

IMO as others have mentioned, drop coverage with Hunter on the ball screens seems like something they must consider doing. Too much film of KU struggling here. Griffen might have made the play of the game where he had great awareness and got a block, that was a big time play that changed the momentum. So, there was defensive plays made when needed but it wasn’t pretty. Mayo and Hunt also came up with key steals/rebounds as well late.
Foul trouble was an issue and MSU playing 2 bigs forcing Self to play Bidunga at the 4 with Adams saddled with 2 fouls. It worked on Offense as KU got into the paint and got Flory three dunks but defensively, I could tell they have not practiced it much, if at all. Booker had one where Flory never left the paint before he took his shot, the same area Hunt was already in, so that leads me to believe Flory did not know his assignments playing the 4. He’s more mobile than Hunt so it was kind of alarming to see how much room he was giving his man who was camped on the perimeter.
I definitely wanted to see this combo out on the floor but it definitely needs some work defensively.

Usually, I can tolerate Jay Bilus during games, but not during the Champions Classic where it becomes a Duke propoganda/love fest. I’m sure glad Duke lost. I didn’t stay up for the second half and won’t take the time to watch a replay. How did Jay take the loss after declaring during our game that Duke had the most talent of any team in the country?

Hmm, I’m not quite that concerned. About what I was expecting for a team with so many new pieces. November basketball. If we look like this in February that will be alarming.
-
I still see hope for Zack. He was in the middle of every play while he was in, showing hustle and desire. But he was so sped up it turned into fumble finger results. I think (hope) with more playing time the hustle and desire will win out.
-
Seems we just mimic the Chiefs… staying atop, undefeated, with ugliness.
Juan was our second-highest scorer. That’s a bad sign.

Plus we knew already the defense was going to be a concern coming in. There’s a lot of work to be done there.

@stoptheflop He said - “what a bunch of overhyped, preppy ass, pansy ass pretty boys. This team is a steaming pile of dog doo and won’t be ranked in the top 25 by the middle of December”.
Oh wait - that was me.
-
@nuleafjhawk very much looking forward to Self making 1st rounders out of Storr and Griffen while Duke’s OAD talent languishes under Scheyer.
Can cross “cramping” off the list of magic bullet used excuses! Lol
-
The kid from Duke is 17. I will refrain from making fun of a 17 year old from now on.
-
nvm
-
@BShark which part is bizarre. Sorry, i half assedly tried to shovel through the piles of dukeperbole but didnt get to anything significant other than that his parents had 2 sets of twins, he being one of the second set, and that one of the first set died shortly after birth.

I’m sorry it was late at night and I was thinking of the Filipowski situation.
-
Bragg is only 17? If true no wonder the hype.
-
@BeddieKU23 Yeah, saw a tweet about it. Flagg is his name!
-
@wissox and unlike KU prodigies who only stay a year or less, Flagg will be at Duke for 20 years.
-
@BShark oh yeah! Totally weird.
-
@wissox he went to Dook, he better get some thick skin quick lol
-
@nuleafjhawk Flagg is almost 100% gone, he already is showing he won’t be a bust in college so would take a decent injury/regression to keep him out of being the #1 pick and even then should be a lock for top 5. I can’t remember the last time someone projected to go that high came back to school. Maybe marcus smart? But even he was a few tiers lower of a prospect compared to flagg.
-
@MR11 Sure. I just like to run my mouth.
-
Woops looks like auto correct sent me to a name KU used to fret over a bit years back
-
@BeddieKU23 Yeah, I knew you meant Flagg, but it was funny seeing Bragg as he was a former Jayhawk who never lived up to his potential unfortunately.
-
@BeddieKU23 I feel like Dook always has the most hated white guy. We finally got one with CB, I miss him hitting daggers and yelling at the crowd haha
-
@kjayhawks there was a string of Sasha face smashing and Withey ugly facing where those two got slightly elevated in that dept. also Gradey had a punchable face and used it effectively to taunt. But nothing like CB.
-
@kjayhawks And I quote from CB - - - - -BIOTCHH H H HH H — - - - ! ! ! LMAO , LOVE IT
-
Hunter ain’t loved so much, neither.
-
Bill talking about how vital KJ is……comical as everyone would like to say it’s coach speak but it’s not as he truly believes it based on his minutes each game
-
If you take the time to listen to other People who have played the game- - -College ball, or been around the game and actually know anything they all agree with Coach – But none of them know nothing isn’t that right ?- - just a bunch of idiots lol
-
@jayballer67 You are actually dead on with your take just slightly missing it.
Other coaches are very complimentary of KJ but he isn’t all big 12 or defensive team or anything. They then proceed to not guard him at all on the offensive end when he’s anywhere outside the paint
Actions>>words
Plenty of coaches off the record and not in front of the media have kj and Juan pegged accurately
Eye test isn’t difficult to see
-
I forgot to mention, but I’m sure others noted that all those empty seats around the court filled with Kentucky fans toward the end of our game. Kentucky fans do show up to support their team.

Like Coach Self said in his Conference on the podcast - -he fully agrees with the fans about KJ rebounding better he says he hears fans but also says the same fans that complain about KJ rebounding better also don’t realize how much KJ brings to the floor for KU - -he said like KJ being able to defend the 1- - -2 - & 3 all in the same possession.
Coach said can KJ do things better ? – of course he can- -then he says but then of course everyone else can always do better also- -that’s the whole team can do better but not just KJ
AMedia guy ask Coach when the decision was made to start kj the other night – Bill said I-- -DIDN’T DECIDE, KJ said he could play. – Bill said he has always told his players if they say they can go then fine BUT he also said if they say they can go - - he doesn’t want to hear any excuses
-
@jayballer67 KJ is athletic enough to guard 1-5 if you ask me on possessions we constantly switch. Heck he was our 5 man and we were a 1 seed….
Coach values defense more than offense but I’d say the game is going the other way. Be a better scorer and on defense force guarded shots and rebound.
That’s where kj hurts us is on the offensive end
