Transfer Rumblings

I don’t want to run anybody off but with this class and rumors of Zeke. What’s the point of having both Bobby and Yesefu on the team next year?

See personally I do want to run off Cam/Cuffe/Zach at a minimum. It’s business and we need contributors for next year tbh. Joe is just never going to work here the fact that he can’t even play any kind of decent off ball defense after two years under Self is wild. I’m very intrigued to see what happens this offseason because we shouldn’t be going into next year with just two transfers out to account for the current FR class. There is too big of a void at the wing spots plus we need shooting.

That point about joe is spot on. He can look so good getting up under his man and picking up full court you know the defensive mentality is there.

Sometimes I wonder how the coaches teach some of the more complex concepts that are really foundational pieces to getting playing time and being a contributor for bill self. Because there are clearly several guys on the team right now that just aren’t getting it and it appears to be more mental than physical. With this much young talent on the bench I do think it has to be considered more of a coaching problem. Did the staff get spoiled by Och and company? Does the transfer portal make it easier to focus on experienced guys like Kevin and cause you not to drill to the level necessary to teach guys like MJ, Udeh, and zuby what it looks like to play as a connected team? I know Joe has more experience now but he still came here pretty young. Feel like I could add him to that list. And apart from MJ, you can’t say these guys haven’t been giving it their all from the moment they got here.

Just a baffling bench. Guess that’s why that has its own thread…

  • @benshawks08 I don’t want to say mean things about Joe but at some point it’s on the player. With FR it’s to be expected and just look at Udeh early compared to now. He still makes some mistakes but it’s night and day.

  • @BShark I imagine Joe is so, so good in practice too tbh. Wonder if it is the bright lights that really cause some of his issues.

  • Don’t know what to make of the Zeke talk now. Was told by someone that would know that we are not looking to grab a guard in the portal. Two wings. Do we view him as a wing? Probably not. Shooting and defense are the top priority aspects for who we will target.

  • @BShark I think the staff figures if you can add 18ppg, you do it. And the figure out the rest later.

I do think you can treat Elmarko like he’s closer to 6’6 with how athletic he is. So you could play the three of Zeke, Elmarko and Juan together imo.

  • @BShark

I get the sense it’s early still with targeting a guard without knowing what Bobby/Joe will do?

We know our wing/4 needs because those guys have already made their intentions known.

Do think there is probably still some stuff up in the air at this point.

  • @BShark

As you’ve mentioned, the staff is unlikely to put pressure on Joe/Bobby/MJ to look elsewhere so it would have to come from them which is an unknown at the moment.

Personally I’d like to see 1 of them look for a fresh start so we could bring in a fresh face potentially or use that scholarship to load up on wing/4 men.

  • @BeddieKU23 I don’t know why I kept forgetting about MJ.

I am hopeful that if he’s here next year maybe he can be a bench spark… Or even edge out a transfer we thought would start into that role.

  • @BShark

Ingram was a 5 star we recruited as well. Haven’t been tickled to death at his development at Stanford but no doubt he’s talented.

  • Frosh season highlights for those unfamiliar. We recruited him out of HS and have good ties to his people.

  • @BShark I can’t say he doesn’t fit… Clearly the right size and athletic profile to plug right in.

  • Looking at his stats - almost 4 assists per game. Still has a ton of upside. Multiple years left to develop if needed… Okay Bill I sees you

  • @Kcmatt7 Defensive rebounding rate is nice too. Just a bit shy of what Jalen and Kevin were at.

  • This post is deleted!

  • Think we lose 3-5 guys to the portal. I feel very confident in 3 guys transferring at the least

Agree. 2 gentle nudges for sure then between 1-3 guys decide to look for greener pastures. That opens up the needed space.

  • For sure we need to Score from the portal. - We need Scorers , when you look at it with your returners - where is your points coming from ? - -Juan ? - - Udeh ? - -KJ ? - -Juan maybe about the same out put just can’t see him producing much if anymore then what w got this year, his shot is just not consistent enough for much more - - KJ - -again maybe a couple of more ppg , a lot of that is where they try and play him - -GOD forbid they try to get him to play a 4. -If that thought ever crossed their mind - then he needs to put in work -LOTS and LOTS OF WORK like 1,00 -2000 shots a day type work for form touch. - - – Udeh don’t see him i his Soph yr as a huge scorer yet either - maybe like KJ this year -8-10 a game. - Of course we get the right players/scorers from the portal then 8-10 be good from Udeh.

Scoring might be a challenge - thusly lik I said pretty obvious -w manage two from the portal like I said needs to be Scorers. - - El Marko can score the ball - -but to what extent his FR year - hoping for the best

  • We hardly knew ye MJ

Hearings? Last I knew he hadn’t decided yet (officially).

  • @BShark yep, he gone.

Only one I don’t really know on is Zach. Cam, Cuffe, Joe are leaving

  • @FarmerJayhawk Officially announced, or thru the mysterious network you and @BShark seem to have?

  • I liked Joe. I understand though. 100% do not want to face him in a tournament matchup next year.

  • @mayjay nothing has been announced yet. I think they’ll do end of season meetings this week and it’ll happen then

  • Losing most of those guys doesn’t lose an ounce of production so there’s that

He’s gone brother. Joe/MJ/Cuffe/Cam is the word currently.

Through the shadow cabal of KU hoops info getters.

  • When does KU normally do their exit meetings? Is there a normal timeline from the last game of the year?

Guessing we start seeing movement in a week or two. Though with us being oversigned by 2 atm says a lot about what is expected.

  • Should happen sooner then last year given the earlier exit. Better for both sides that way, give kids ample time to find a new home while giving KU the time to find good portal fits.

Jay Wright talked about it but when you win the title it really lingers into the offseason.

  • @BShark

Yepp. I don’t think fatigue cost us Saturday but definitely know we weren’t our best given the situation with Self and what not.

Our key guys just didn’t make enough plays.

Massive article from Swain just dropped for those with premium @BeddieKU23 and @TYOHawk I believe?

Basically lines up with all the shadow cabal hearings, unsurprisingly.

Another scoop in the thread by Swain as well about Ingram.

  • @TYOHawk If you were a top two player on the Stanford Cardinal in 22-23, you might just be a Jayhawk in 23-24. 😉

  • Bobby’s AAU coach hinted he might transfer as well…

    I can only pray

  • @TYOHawk I’d rather Bobby left than Joe. At least Joe looks to score.

  • @dylans

I agree on the scoring aspect, but I think the bigger issue for Self is that Joe doesn’t have a position here while Bobby does. When Joe plays he’s playing out of position and he’s undersized and doesn’t make up for those things in his play. Think he needs a school that can hide those things while letting him play free.

It was unfortunate that Bobby was neither comfortable running the point when Harris sat or playing with him on the court at the same time. They were both nightmarish situations. Bobby didn’t seem confident with the ball or seem to have much chemistry with anyone on the court. I got the sense this level of play seemed above his pay grade especially later in the season but I always wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt due to the injuries.

  • @BeddieKU23 Joe is inefficient. Bobby is ineffective. Take your pick. Both can go as far as I’m concerned. If I had to keep one though it would be Joe. Joe appears to try to make an impact, Bobby plays to not mess up. Joe could lose you games, but could also win you some. Bobby won’t win you anything, but he’s far less likely to lose you a game as well. I suppose it comes down to personal preference, but neither should be playing significant minutes for KU.

  • @dylans

I agree with your last sentence. I don’t have a preference for either. I have liked and supported both and hoped for bigger things then both have shown here. I may have overestimated what I thought they would do here.

I wouldn’t mind if one of them returns but if neither returns then I really hope we find an experienced guard in the portal

  • @dylans “Bobby plays to not mess up”

That’s what our whole team did this year. @drgnslayr would say they had no “chip”. Never once this season did I see this team balls to the wall, hustle like crazy, put their feet on the throat of the “enemy”. Well, I’ll back up for a second - they played hard once they got down 10 or more - which was a lot for a team of this “caliber”. But when they weren’t making big comebacks, they were playing not to lose.

  • @nuleafjhawk

I hear what you are saying. And I agree. But I think the reason wasn’t their lack of desire to turn it up. I think they were just conserving energy. Look at how our starting 5 often put in 35+ minutes a game. That’s a lot of minutes. It’s possible if you aren’t sprinting on every possession. But the style they really needed to play was full-tilt basketball.

We were all so excited to finally have a running team and we got a taste of it in some of our early games. The guys had fresh legs and we blew away teams so everyone received some minutes. But as the season progressed it seems like we played slower and slower basketball.

Juan deserves a lot of credit for a great season… I think he gave everything he had but didn’t have anything left.

If we ran the ball upcourt on every possession our offense would totally kick butt! We attack before the defense sets up… go right into offense after crossing halfcourt and wow!

  • @dylans said in Transfer Rumblings:

@TYOHawk I’d rather Bobby left than Joe. At least Joe looks to score.

I don’t think either is good to be honest. As harsh as that sounds…but if I had to keep one I’d keep Joe. He at least plays like he has some self-esteem. He’s been on the team for 2 years and I still can’t tell you what Bobby is good at. That’s fine at a place like NC State or a mid major…not at KU.

  • @drgnslayr It’s been a while, but when I was 18-22 years old - I could play ball ALL D**N DAY. After partying until the wee hours. I think we implant this stuff (not you personally - you know i almost always agree with you) stuff in their heads and they get to thinking about how physically demanding this game is. I don’t buy it. If they were playing in a 40 and under league - yeah. But not highly trained, physically gifted athletes who are in their prime.

  • @nuleafjhawk

I’ve posted this before in here. I played extensive organized basketball then had the opportunity to play in Europe at a much higher level. I thought I was in great condition. My first day on this team and I had to puke. Every athlete has their limit. Our guys just needed more rest time within their games. For a D1 team to play real run and gun ball players shouldn’t go 35+ minutes… especially every game.

I think there is a difference in styles of run and gun. What we needed was the most-punishing version. Some run and gun just pushes the ball up court quickly and if a break score isn’t there they slow it down. We needed to push the ball up and run hard, fast offense. We needed to tire our opponents on every possession. How do we not tire when the defense tires?

We need a solid 8-player rotation. We didn’t have it this year.

We used to chat a lot about Frank Mason getting worn down as the year progressed. Part of it was him getting nicked up… but mostly he just wore down and he had great athleticism.

If you watch NBA… all those guys get lots of rest. They are pushed even harder but they get pulled constantly throughout games. What it shows is even our top athletes have their limits. They play run and gun differently. They typically only send 2 to 3 players downcourt on their runs.

Many in here thought our bench should have received more minutes in games all year. Maybe… but I bet they didn’t show they deserved more minutes in practice. Self would have liked to play them more but they didn’t show promise even in practice.

  • @drgnslayr

Yeah the bench didn’t get run because Self realized he couldn’t win with them. Winning will always be above playing guys who can’t maximize that goal.

  • @BeddieKU23

Yep… and it makes me think about how much of our bench should we ask to return? I know good bigs are hard to find and I definitely hope we keep Ernest and Zuby… but otherwise… if guys couldn’t win minutes this year when we were so desperate for relief minutes, can they next year?
