Seems to be a given that one of them leaves. They just added a guy who’s playing at least 30 minutes a game and both were top 50 recruits that probably wanted an increased role at the very least.
I understand that just hate to see good kids that develop during their 4 years. have seen it over and over with Bill --Sad that there has to be someone that loses in these situations.

Yep. Do we want them to transfer? No. Would I blame one of them for transferring? Also no. One of them is looking at being last on the depth chart…
I’m fascinated to see what we will do to fill that scholarship if it becomes available. Maybe just leave it ticketed for someone coming back from the draft?
I’m sure we will try, but my guess is we end up with roster filler. We won’t have a starting spot to sell.
Gonna have to be picky now given the scholarship reduction and the fact that transfers can’t do it twice now. Don’t want to be stuck with someone.
Yeah. If the Utah Valley kid will be eligible I like him a lot. Note: I’d rather keep Udeh if at all possible.
that’s actually a great call. Hold him for a year and then he starts when Hunter leaves if he doesn’t get the waiver. That being said he entered the portal and immediately talked about mental health so we’ll see on that.

Zuby is a better overall defender than Udeh.

Swatting or altering shots or stealing it - no.
Eye test says give me Udeh all day with the higher ceiling. He can go catch lobs Zuby just can’t get to.

Udeh has so much untapped potential. All he needs is coaching. He was so raw at the beginning of the season, he was unplayable. By the end he was a contributor. In year three he would be a star- Udeh just needs an opportunity to play and some patience.

Longer doesn’t necessarily mean a higher ceiling or better shot blocker because Zuby did have a significantly higher block rate than Udeh. Zuby just wasn’t as flashy or make the highlight plays that Udeh did. Doesn’t matter now though obviously.

If McCullar is very likely to get a two-way contract, he won’t be back. If his feedback is that it’s very unlikely he’d get a two-way contract, then that’s when there becomes an increased chance If him withdrawing from the draft.
Based on where most mocks have him ranked, he’s got a pretty good shot at getting a two-way deal with some team.

Not to be negative, but I’m curious. When McCullars transferred in, it was partially the “atmosphere of family” that drew him. This coming year there are 3 returning players. I’m wondering how HCBS will create that again with all the new guys. Puerto Rico will help but what the team had last year was because they bonded over a couple of years.

@Kcmatt7 - the accent is on “team”. Although I doubt HCBS will allow “hero ball”.
Last year’s team won the Big 12 in part by relying on each other during tough games. The round of 32 loss was most likely due, in large part, to Self’s illness.

Much better especially if we land Mgbako and 1 more nba late pull out.
Last years team would have gotten beat by uconn the next round anyways.
We peaked in December against missery and Iu.
Had really close big 12 wins against bottom teams
We were good but not great

Over/under on 1 incoming freshman coming back after next yr. Not really a point in getting to know them or care at this point.
So which incoming freshman do we think could return after a year?

Now Zuby has entered the portal. The portal has really changed college basketball: I see plenty of good things about letting young athletes change schools, but I’m going to miss watching players grow over several years at KU. Coach Self appears to be making room for another player. Maybe he has a hint about Kevin.

@Texas-Hawk-10 I might be biased. That’s interesting that Zuby had a higher block rate. Ideally do you think he develops into a first rounder somewhere else? What do you think his ceiling is?
Also a good point about Self recruiting 2 guys at the same position / same year in Udeh and Zuby. Wondering why he did that, and was that the highest profile same class pair of bigs he recruited other than Morrii? Sasha / Darnell were 4 stars.
And why? Insurance policy? Best available player?

Think that could very easily be on the table. Would make sense that we could retain one of them, then add a Martin/Whitman/Maxwell level guy for depth.

Not someone KU likely goes after but Marshall’s SG Andrew Taylor enters the portal. Averaged 20ppg (crazy that was 2nd on the team in scoring) off 41% FG, 36% from 3, 4.7 boards & assists. Stat stuffer

@wissox I hate to see this as well, But… I see part of Self’s change cause of things like recruiting a new roster every year because of one-and-dones, transfers, SEC buying schools/athletes with TV contracts, the revolving door portal- if you don’t use the NIL can you expect to win? The ncaa was so concerned with the shoe money( only Adidas money-not Nike money??) and now has opened the floodwater with NIL (possibly to become an unregulated cash flow)!! It’s now TV money calling the shots. If we don’t compete we will no longer be able to win. The rules have changed! We’ll just have wait and see what happens and hope for the best!

Zuby Ejiofor has visits scheduled with Villanova, St. John’s, TCU, and San Diego St.
He’d be a really good fit at any of those 4 as they’re all very much defensively minded programs. SDSU is a really intriguing fit to me with them coming off their first Final Four appearance.

But some guy ends up at a solid mid major, like Dayton lets say, and plays very well, and suddenly he sees greener pastures and bolts leaving the solid mid major fans sad and depressed.

The counter to that though is a lot of top tier talent that doesn’t get early playing time also moves down to these high level mid major programs. FAU, SDSU, and Creighton this year, Houston making the Elite 8 in 2022 and Final Four in 2021, and in 2020 Dayton, Creighton, and SDSU all were going to be top 2 seeds and have a good chance to make the Elite 8 or deeper. Every team above was a mid major that made at least the Elite 8 in the NCAA tournament. This new reality of the portal hasn’t stopped mid major teams from making deep runs.
