2023 Transfer Portal

  • Over/under on 1 incoming freshman coming back after next yr. Not really a point in getting to know them or care at this point.

So which incoming freshman do we think could return after a year?

  • Now Zuby has entered the portal. The portal has really changed college basketball: I see plenty of good things about letting young athletes change schools, but I’m going to miss watching players grow over several years at KU. Coach Self appears to be making room for another player. Maybe he has a hint about Kevin.

  • @stoptheflop The opportunity cost of Hunter Dickinson. We lose a kid I was excited about.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 I might be biased. That’s interesting that Zuby had a higher block rate. Ideally do you think he develops into a first rounder somewhere else? What do you think his ceiling is?

Also a good point about Self recruiting 2 guys at the same position / same year in Udeh and Zuby. Wondering why he did that, and was that the highest profile same class pair of bigs he recruited other than Morrii? Sasha / Darnell were 4 stars.

And why? Insurance policy? Best available player?

  • Zuby chose to leave. Was absolutely not asked to leave. I get why, the article in the star was pretty good actually.

  • @BShark Philacheck sounds very reasonable. Appreciate them leaving the door open to returning if somehow it shakes out that way. I’m guessing that means if Ernest departs we could still see Zuby back.

  • @approxinfinity It seems Philacheck feels the same way about the portal as I do. It’s great for the stratification of talent.

Think that could very easily be on the table. Would make sense that we could retain one of them, then add a Martin/Whitman/Maxwell level guy for depth.

  • @BShark yuck

  • Tyson announced he’s transferring to Cal.

  • @Gorilla72

Cal loading up to win 9 games this year😁

  • Not someone KU likely goes after but Marshall’s SG Andrew Taylor enters the portal. Averaged 20ppg (crazy that was 2nd on the team in scoring) off 41% FG, 36% from 3, 4.7 boards & assists. Stat stuffer

Was gonna post this myself. - -I would like to see them contact him at least for sure, might just be the one we needed to fill that other spot & then Mgbako too

  • @jayballer67

I don’t see the fit. Figures to be a commodity given his stats and timing of entering the portal.

  • @wissox I hate to see this as well, But… I see part of Self’s change cause of things like recruiting a new roster every year because of one-and-dones, transfers, SEC buying schools/athletes with TV contracts, the revolving door portal- if you don’t use the NIL can you expect to win? The ncaa was so concerned with the shoe money( only Adidas money-not Nike money??) and now has opened the floodwater with NIL (possibly to become an unregulated cash flow)!! It’s now TV money calling the shots. If we don’t compete we will no longer be able to win. The rules have changed! We’ll just have wait and see what happens and hope for the best!

  • Zuby Ejiofor has visits scheduled with Villanova, St. John’s, TCU, and San Diego St.

He’d be a really good fit at any of those 4 as they’re all very much defensively minded programs. SDSU is a really intriguing fit to me with them coming off their first Final Four appearance.

  • Axtecs pls

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 thanks for the update! Glad to hear his stock is high and he has some high profile interest.

  • @coolfool13 The funny thing is I hate what it’s doing to all the non KU’s of the world. We’re gonna get our guys via recruiting and the portal. But some guy ends up at a solid mid major, like Dayton lets say, and plays very well, and suddenly he sees greener pastures and bolts leaving the solid mid major fans sad and depressed.

  • We had oustanding parity this tourney. This is a glass half full / half empty question

The counter to that though is a lot of top tier talent that doesn’t get early playing time also moves down to these high level mid major programs. FAU, SDSU, and Creighton this year, Houston making the Elite 8 in 2022 and Final Four in 2021, and in 2020 Dayton, Creighton, and SDSU all were going to be top 2 seeds and have a good chance to make the Elite 8 or deeper. Every team above was a mid major that made at least the Elite 8 in the NCAA tournament. This new reality of the portal hasn’t stopped mid major teams from making deep runs.

Welp, I guess that’s what happens when you have a fake majors.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 lol never heard that one before!

  • Caleb, enjoy Kentucky! Stay away from here- you wouldn’t like it here at all.

  • Cuffe to Syracuse. Didn’t see that coming!

Up 6 spots on Torvik with this addition!

    Add Kyle Cuffe Jr.;Kansas ADJ. OE ADJ. DE PYTH RK Before: 102.2 103 0.4761 188 After: 103.2 103.2 0.5002 182

  • @BShark But like, how? No offense to Cuffe. Seemed like a great kid when I heard him in some interviews. Wish him all the best. But how is there any idea what his impact could be on a program like Syracuse? Are they that bad that a totally unproven addition makes them better?

Well they went from 188 to 182 so it’s not like he moved the needle. It’s going off of the limited time he got at Kansas and his recruiting ranking.

  • Shocked that cuffe ended up at a high major but good for him

“Cuffe says he chose Syracuse over interest from Richmond, Tulane, Pacific, GCU, Western Kentucky, and New Mexico State.”

Per On3. Interesting group of schools there.

  • Question: Does JWILL, BIFM, TROB, Devonte or Gradey have any brothers who happen to play bb? Asking for a friend…

So tell me why exactly it shocked you that he ended up at a high Major ? - - Have you gotten to see him play in ample minutes of action to show he can’t compete at this level ? He sure didn’t do any thing here to prove he couldn’t play, as he didn’t touch the floor for maybe a total of 10 minutes if that while he was here to show he ws a train wreck looking for a place to happen. - -He was injured a lot while he was here , but that doesn’t show he couldn’t compete here - -

I find it kinda of hard to judge a kid there never played and then recruiting time comes around and possibly are better he just automatically get’s recruited over an he then automatically isn’t a caliber P-5 type of player and isn’t good enough. Obviously KU seen something in him at our level or they wouldn’t of recruited him in the 1s t place.- -Doesn’t surprise me at all.

Does Udeh surprise you if he ends up at Duke ? - -or Syracuse ? - -nothing personal - just curious as makes me wonder how people can evulate a kid when he hasn’t been given the chance to prove his ability- -I guess wrong place at the wrong time, BUT I for one don’t or think I’m surprised he has landed where he hsa

I mean he didn’t play here and it doesn’t seem like he was gonna play here. I figured high majors would take fliers on other guards and not one who’s suffered two knee injuries in 2 seasons. Udeh’s recruiting pedigree is way better and also he showed way more on the court so I’m not surprised that he has high major attention. Same with zuby

  • @jayballer67 For me, if you couldn’t make it on the floor with last year’s bench, you might no be a power five level player. We were successful last year solely based on the strength of our starters.

  • Udeh to Duke.

Glad he did not go to KSU.

  • @jayballer67 Well, to be fair everybody who has been healthy enough to suit up for KU has had a chance to prove himself in practice. Just a little window of opportunity, but hustle and enthusiasm has helped even walkons and other bench players advance to significant PT. Call it the Releford/Moody/Teahan/Lightfoot path to a Jayhawk legacy.

  • @AsadZ still hate it.

  • Kevin isn’t looking good playing at the combine.

Is Dook’s bench nicer than ours? SMH.

  • Doesn’t Duke already have a big SO/Jr center and another guy, even if Filipowski is at the 4?

  • Yeah he’s gonna sit behind Young lol

only one problem with that, as kyle was hurt most of the season last year kinda hard to make it on the floor when injured

Again with being hurt the majority It’s just awfully hard to judge when you haven’t actually seen him play. I haven’t seen him play either so I can’t say he is better or not, but I can’t just automatically say he isn’t capable of playing at this level. I’m glaad he did hook up with Syracuse and hope he does really well. Yet you can’t say Udeh showed way better–cause Kyle didn’t get the chance to show, - but it’s ok I for one thinks Kyle is gonna be just fine

  • Udeh will start there. Bet.

  • Reeves as a SO and Borden as a JR this year are both 7’+. Both know the system. Both are centers. Are they too slow? Or did they transfer?
