Myron Medcalf Disrespecting Kansas Basketball

He ranked the top 25 teams from first to worst.

    • Issue #1: He gives Duke’s '99 team–who lost in the championship–the #4 spot? Led by Elton Brand? You gotta have more star power to be the 4th best in 25 years if you don’t even win the natty.

    • Issue #2: He has Baylor’s title team as better than any team KU has had over the past 25 years? I highly doubt that.

    • Issue #3: KU’s '08 title team–the only team to win with a final four group of all #1s–IS #13 ON THE LIST?! Blasphemy. Seriously, though, it’s just dumb. We had so many studs on that team: Chalmers, Rush, Russell Robinson, Darrell Arthur, Darnell Jackson, and Sherron Freaking Collins, Sasha Kaun, and Cole Aldrich off the bench. Medcalf probably thinks Lebron is the GOAT too.

    • Issue #4: Per issue #1, you don’t have to win a natty to be on the list. Then why isn’t our '20 team, arguably the most dominant team KU has had over the past 25 years, 2nd to last on this list?

    • Issue #5: Our last title team was the worst on this list over the past 25 years? I’m sorry, after this trash list, the burden of proof is on Medcalf or anyone else to prove why this team should be this low. I won’t explain myself on this one.

  • Medcalf is a Duke chode

  • @BeddieKU23 What’s your definition of chode? Around these parts it’s synonymous with taint or abc if you prefer. Nebraskans call it chode when a certain appendage is bigger around than long. And I’m sure there are others, thus my curiosity.

  • @dylans

I don’t believe my actual meaning is PG enough for here coming from a Northeasterner.

He’s a major ACC/Duke Homer if that leads you towards the conclusion you thought. I found your response humorous.

    Girth >/= Length

  • The team that defeated a team that was only undefeated because of their weak conference should have been included, 2015 Wisconsin.

I suspect other writers might rank the Jayhawks better. Pretty subjective list.

I’m thinking 2018 Villanova, which as we know, steamrolled everyone in the tourney should have been higher.

His inclusion of 2019 Duke which lost in the sweet 16, but nearly lost in the round of 32 is the most egregious inclusion and shows that as @BeddieKU23 asserts Medcalf is a Duke chode.

  • And under his reasoning for 2019 Duke, no mention of whatever year we had Wiggins and Embiid?

And I just realized he had the Memphis team we beat much higher too. Seems like not just a Dookie but a Dumb Dookie to boot.

  • Myron Metcalf really only has one article a year that he’s know for. He’s got to grab attention somehow to remain relevant. - hack

  • Looks like the piece did its job

  • @FarmerJayhawk I recognized the name so I didn’t click on the link. - but I definitely know who he is, so he’s winning on that front.

  • I didn’t click the link given the summary in original post to avoid giving him the benefit of a click. He’s still a chode/hack.

  • I haven’t clicked on the link, but if the 2 most recent UConn teams aren’t placed between #22 and #25 then he’s a bigger idiot than I thought. (and I thought he was a, er. chode)

  • I must admit, at last count I spend over 53.7 hours a week worrying about what self-appointed experts think about comparisons among teams and players throughout history of every sport down to the national Vietnam ping pong championships. Huge controversies there over which lefty had the best overhand slam in 1934 during the French colonial occupation. And which Pee Wee football team in Idaho is the GOAT? Man, don’t get me started.

  • 3 of the 4 Duke teams on his list were not even National Champions. LOL

  • @DanR

Don’t let that bother ya! Championships are overrated 😁

  • I personally think my hatred for Duke gives me purpose and will prolongue my life and hope it never flickers.

  • @approxinfinity Mine has surprisingly kind of simmered down. I must subconsciously be saving energy for when Grayson Allen returns as coach.

  • @mayjay you saw the clips of scheyers assistants refusing to shake hands? Make no mistake, the brotherhood does not fall from the tree.

  • @DanR Interesting because if I made a list of best KU teams, and I’m only qualified to rate back to 1985, I’d say 97 was the best, 85 2nd best, 03 3rd best and finally rate a champion, 08 a bit ahead of '22.

  • @wissox my very hot take was 02 was better than 03

  • @wissox That ‘97 team should’ve went undefeated. What could’ve been.

    I’d rate ‘20 over ‘22 too.

  • @dylans Oh boy, I forgot about 20.

@FarmerJayhawk Could be. Gooden, Hinrich, Collison. A great collection of pro players.

So would anyone rank any of our championship teams above those teams mentioned above? In some ways, of course, they had what it took to win it all.

The 2008 team to me was the most complete of the 3 championship teams I’ve experienced. Yet they were the ‘luckiest’ (?) of the three also as Memphis choked at the line, and a miracle shot at the buzzer. Yet since it was against the inferior coach Cal, it also was very satisfying.

Listening to Billy Packer that game was also annoying as heck, so 2 of my 3 championships have been tainted by the broadcaster as Brett Mushmouthberger did the 08 game (with Billy) and just couldn’t handle KU running with OU like they did.

The '02 team being better than the '03 team is a hot take? The '02 team is only team to run the table in Big 12 play and was a 1 seed in the tournament while the '03 team was a 3 seed in the tournament.

My hot take is the 2010 team is a massively underrated team because of the early tournament exit. That team entered the NCAA Tournament as the clear favorite to win it all, was 32-2 going into the tournament and was ranked #1 all but 4 weeks that season.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 sarcasm, chief

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 I just have trouble assigning GOAT status to the 2010 team because of their failure early in the tournament. My reason (and remember these are very subjective) for including 2003 was they were NC’s if they’d just made 50% of their FT’s that day.

It’s a fun discussion to have as we’ve had great teams.

  • 2006-07 was a really good team as well and frequently overlooked in these discussions. (Elite 8 )

  • Of the last 25 years, the 2002 KU team was the only KU team in honestly thought might never lose. That team was incredible, but not winning the title kind of overshadows that.

The 2007 team gets lost in the shuffle as well because of 2008, but that team was basically as good as the 2008, swapping a bit of consistency for more explosiveness.

We will never know what the 2020 team could have been. If they win the national title, they probably go down as one of the most dominant KU teams ever. That group really was robbed of potentially a place in history as an all time type of team. A title puts them up there with the 97 and 2002 KU teams in terms of dominance, but with a title to back it up. Maybe the best KU team of the last 50 years? We will never know what a dominant March run does for their legacy.
