Arterio Morris is a Jayhawk

This move reeks of desperation unless Bill knows something we don’t.

I guess the girl could have made it all up, but there was a lot of stuff to make up.

Oh well. hope it all works out.

It’s a gamble - -better be ready to walk the straight and narrow. - you know if ANYTHING happens with him and it will just EXPLODE

  • I don’t support this take for optics alone. Some things should matter. But I know that may not be what others think.

If it proves to be wise to think otherwise I will but until then I don’t agree

  • Well. I hope he is sincerely committed to getting his shit together at Kansas. If he is, he chose wisely.

  • I like this move a lot. Just the action of picking KU/Self shows some maturity because everyone knows Bill wont mess around if he messes up again. Plus we only really know the story in the media which certainly isnt his version. Somewhat low risk, super high reward. Go hawks.

Well, at least one fan agrees with you. I don’t understand this, not only from an optics perspective, but also in terms of talent and fit. Put aside the personal stuff. Exactly what did he show at UT which suggests he should be a Jayhawk? As down as I’ve been on Spears, I would have taken him over Morris (although alternatives would have been my preference). I assume the Spears visit is now a waste of time? We don’t need a 5th (or 6th if you include Cluffe) 6-4 guard or smaller. I thought HCBS said we needed some size and athleticism, in addition to someone who could make treys?

Really, can’t KU do better than this???

Oh as far as being athletic - -he is WAY ATHLETIC, the # 1 PG coming out of the 2022 class, really came on at the end of the year-no questioning his on the Court ability-- -it’s off the court he has to get a grip on.

OH there is no question on his athletic ability , the # 1 pg coming out in the 22 class quick , really came on for Texas at the end of last year. I have no reason to question his on the floor ability - It’s his off the cort that he has to keep in check.

Thing is you have to come to grips with now - - like it or not He is a Jayhawk a part of the team so he is now a part of Jayhawk Nation so gonna have to welcome him in the family - - I’ll leave it up to Coach Self he knows what he is doing. That’s why he is at hee he is at and why you and I are at where we are at

  • Morris makes this team better. All I got

Morris was ranked 16th in the 2022 class by 24/7 and has a huge upside of talent. I assume him committing means he is willing to play off the ball otherwise he’ll play about 10 mpg here the next two seasons. He’s also an infinitely better defender than Spears. On the court, Morris is a much higher ceiling player than Spears is. Off the court, we’re just going to have to trust that Self and staff have done their homework on his issues and are comfortable with bringing Morris in.

I’m also very curious what the starting line up is going to be now because Self doesn’t have a true 3 at this point. Does Self start Timberlake at the 3 now or is Marcus Adams going to be in that spot?

  • I would rather lose with high character players, than sell out morality for wins. But that really isn’t the only option. Good people play ball - Jalen, Ochai - both great human beings and proven winners. Just because he’s a Jayhawk now doesn’t change my view about Morris, but it does about the program.

To play devil’s advocate, Jalen could have killed someone drunk driving and we wouldn’t be including him in the “good” list. He knew he was off the track he wanted to be on with that DUI, and Jalen is also a redemption story. Hopefully Arterio is choosing a positive environment because he’s ready to be positive.

Jalen got a DUI. Not the player to use in this example. But he manned up and made the most of his second opportunity and became a champion and a man. Who’s to say the same can’t become true for Morris?

  • Ochai is a good one. Dave and Landen were also really awesome dudes.

  • @TYOHawk Are you really comparing a DUI to domestic violence? We jump the shark so fast as a society.

Jalen handles himself in an extremely respectful way. I would be proud to call him my kid from what I’ve seen of him. Yessir, no sir, makes eye contact, payed his dues for his mistake. - yes a mistake.

There is zero excuse for what Morris did as it’s portrayed. Sure people deserve a second chance - but it should be a privilege to play basketball for KU, one he should have lost for his lack of character.

  • @TYOHawk Another allegation about Morris is that his family and friends pressured the ex-gf to not say anything bad about him b/c it might hurt his career.

Morris has not to my knowledge ever acknowledged he did anything.

  • This just feels like a bad dream. - I’m being punked right? Bill living in the portal Self surely didn’t identify a woman beater as one of his top targets and aggressively go get him, did he? The sad thing is Allen Fieldhouse will be sold out wildly supporting this guys ability to play basketball in spite of his off court actions. - Alabama lite/ Texas North?

Is KU basketball so important to us fans that we can completely overlook character in favor of god given talent? For some the answer is clearly yes.

Arterio has never shown remorse, nor faced any punishment.

Jalen’s bad judgment surrounds hypotheticals - he could’ve hurt someone. Arterio did hurt someone, willfully. There is a significant difference.

If you believe the rumors, Arterio was allegedly his 2nd most wanted guy behind Hunter. Not saying you are of course, but probably a bad idea for anyone to hold Self/the staff on any kind of pedestal. It’s about winning only. Self has made that statement LOUD AND CLEAR with his actions.

I am not overlooking this but agree many are, basically trying to hand wave the issues away. Mostly my twitter mutuals and other people I talk to within the fanbase feel similarly to me, but I’ve definitely gotten into it with some people on this one. One basically had nothing of value to say so he just kept saying “didn’t ask” to w/e I said so I just blocked them. I went to multiple games last year, but I’m definitely not going to games with Morris on the team.

  • @BShark Yeah. I’d love to ask Self what he’s thinking. Why so desperate to win? What’s he trying to prove?

I had plans of getting seats a couple rows behind the bench for a game (UConn or a conference game), but this changes my plans. I’m torn. I love KU and didn’t have a chance to go the last couple years. Now I can physically go, but I’m not sure I fully support what’s going on.

Let’s say he does mess up again. News of it comes out in late February. He’s helped lead this team to another league title and potential #1 seed. Now he’s got to be kicked off the team. Pffft goes our chances in the dance. I don’t want to risk that. I don’t want to even win with a guy like this.

All of you are right, we don’t know the facts, but stories like this wouldn’t be told about this guy if he was an upstanding citizen.

We’re already somewhat of a pariah nationally as the 5 major violations taunt is still repeated. Bring in Hunter D, another with a somewhat shady rep also and we’ll still be talked about negatively.

How has your view of the program changed?

  • Whew. Full dramatics going on in this thread. Wow.

  • I think both sides of this are valid. The only person that can answer how you should feel on this is you. If you want to only care about sports/winning that’s your choice.

  • @Woodrow said in Arterio Morris is a Jayhawk:

Before I could defend Kansas’ virtue to the KSU homers. Now I really can’t. It’s changed my view from my Roy Williams tinted good old boy routine to one of cynicism. Jaybate was unfortunately more right than I wanted to admit.

I guess I’m more disgusted in the lack of a convictions that fans have. If this guy played for UK or Missouri we would slaughter his character and the programs for selling their soul for wins. Since he signed with KU I’ve already seen people trying to justify his actions. (He’s not a bad kid/she made it up/he didn’t do it/it’s not that bad/etc). If we held the program to higher standards they would not be able to stoop to these lows.

Lots of faith in the “justice system” too. Maybe a bad faith argument to begin with but as someone that has seen the “justice system” in action plenty, especially wrt domestic violence that is NOT the flex people think it is.

  • I don’t want to further attack the kid. He is in the fold now and I hope he can become a model citizen. I just don’t like the decision to take on the risks and negative attention associated with him. By all accounts he’s a very good basketball player. I hope they can help show him how to be an equally good man. But it’s still on Art’s shoulders to put it in action every day.

  • Guess you guys already have it all figured out.

  • If he were my kid, I’d be doing a lot of soul searching, but I’d want him to play for a disciplined tough coach like Self. Or at least like the coach I perceived Self to be prior to this decision—I’m still feeling my way around whether I need to alter my sense of Self. Also, I believe in growth and redemption, but a lack of contrition is a road block to that.

  • Is the negative attention nationwide or only on this site? I would guess that many of the kids playing college sports come with some kind of risk. I would also. think that when a court decision is made then a decision will be made on his playing or not. Let’s not be judge, jury and executioners since we know only what the media has chosen to give us.

  • @Woodrow We’re fans being fans! We all know we don’t have the ultimate answer, but this signing deserves some scrutiny. I hope a year from now we’ll be saying we were wrong about.

This is the most divisive addition in awhile. Anywhere you have people that talk about KU basketball there are arguments about this. Wouldn’t surprise me to see articles from Wolken, Forde, Oneill etc but I haven’t went looking.

Not too hard to find unfortunately. Multiple articles in the last couple months (including the Topeka rag). Curious how many there will be in the coming months, hopefully about how his character has improved and he’s doing community service and is sorry for previous missteps.

Because most journalists cover multiple sports if they don’t work for ESPN or Fox. The NFL Draft is one of the biggest media coverage events in the U.S. so there’s going to be a lot more attention on the draft this weekend. Guys that cover college basketball that have a major issue with this aren’t going to simply fire off a tweet and be done with it. Someone like Pat Forde will probably have his latest KU hit piece on this out sometime early next week.

I also don’t know what LJW coverage will end up looking like since Matt Tait’s last day there was this past week before Morris committed.
