Anyone concerned about losing Leipold to Nebraska?

  • Campbell is the front runner. I doubt Lance is anywhere near the top of their wish list.

  • 4-10 won’t get you the Nebraska job. They have fired guys for 9 win seasons.

  • I am a bit concerned

    Big money can talk

  • @AsadZ I’ve never been in a position to turn down “big money”, although whatever Leipold is making at KU is ginormous money compared to my salary.

Having said that - from what very little I know about this guy, he wants to prove people wrong. How many folks do you think told him " Oh God, not Kansas. Hold out for a good job "?

I think he wants to prove he can win - even at Kansas. I hope he proves me right.

  • Lance Leipold won multiple national championships at a D3 school in Wisconsin. Bo Ryan won multiple national championships at a different D3 school in Wisconsin and nearly won a national championship. A multiple champion at D3 knows how to win and while it’s no guarantee for winning a D1 championship, I believe that we have a top notch coach in Lance but others will recognize it as well.

  • Again have to say not that concerned I think Lance is probably 3rd or 4th in line. Seeing Campbell has come and said he would be interested in the Job according to a CBS rumor, and especially since Nebraska saying they would like to have the Coach in time for the Early Signing period in December. Just don’t see that happening

  • I think Lance would end up being a phenomenal hire for Nebraska. But I don’t think a big money donor for Nebraska ponied up the $7.5M to fire Frost early to hire Lance. They are going to backup the Brinks truck for Matt Campbell or someone like that. I’m shocked I haven’t seen Dave Clawson’s name thrown around. Could see Mark Stoops there.

Really hoping we have our big money guys step up to match whatever offer. I do think that if he stayed here he could be a legend. At Nebraska he’ll be “a guy.”

I personally think the Nebraska job is one of the absolute worst in football. Expectations of B10 championships despite being maybe the 7th or 8th best job in the B10 now that UCLA and USC have been added. Its an absolutely awful job imo.

  • Legit question - is the Nebraska job better than the Iowa job?

I think that it is a worse job than:

    • OSU
    • PSU
    • UW
    • USC
    • Michigan
    • UCLA

Basically on par with the Iowa job imo. Reality is that Nebraska is in a barren wasteland of talent. They can try to recruit Ohio/Penn rich area but you’re competing against the big boys and you are further away than Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Cincinnati, Iowa, Purdue, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisville, Illinois and Michigan State. They have lost the Texas pipeline by moving to the B10. Nebraska’s in-state talent is awful. Neighboring states are also vast wastelands of talent.

    It is a shitty job.

  • @Kcmatt7 It is a shitty job only because of the expectations. They have unlimited money, facilities, in the richest conference, etc… There are obviously a lot of things to like about the job. However, it will take someone that can handle the donors and expectations.

I don’t think Lance is the first choice for them, but I bet he is in the 6-10 range. If they get turned down by Urban, Campbell, Rhule, Stoops, and then come a calling with 5-7M per year he is going.

  • Nebraska is just not a premiere job anymore. Unfortunately, their fans are not aware of that.

Nebraska can’t go into any talent rich state and be a top recruiting option anymore.

They are probably the 15th choice (at best) for a kid from Texas. Probably the 20th choice or worse for a kid from Florida. Probably the 10th choice (or worse) for top talent from Ohio/Michigan/Pennsylvania. As @Kcmatt7 said, they have almost no in-state talent. They can’t just come into nearby metro areas like KC, StL, Chicago and get their pick of those players. Nebraska has no talent base to get players from.

It’s a lousy place to recruit to with unreasonable expectations. Leipold would be crazy to take that job.

  • Like they are saying Nebraska isn’t going to settle say for a coach in his 2nd year that is like 4 - 10 record -or if we can get 4 wins or show like 7 -17 record in two years, do you really think the Nebraska fans - -Alum would be happy with that kind of a hire ?

More rumor of Fleck Coach of Minnesota - Little talk of Urban Meyer , Klineman of K/State - - Campbell of Iowa State. - -not to worried yet.

  • @Woodrow I wouldn’t blame him. And I do think he’d go.

I just think Nebraska is a weird job.

  • Read this of Baylor 365 Sic-em . - -A Article or tweeted out from Lars Anderson - -said from inside sources he knows usually pretty solid, he said that it sure looks like after this is all said and done that is expected that Nebraska is Highly expected that Nebraska will hir Matt Campbell of Iowa State. - Guess interest in him an him in Nebraska. Been stated of CBS article that he Campbell has interest in the Nebraska job. May not be til towards the end of the foot ball Season but looks like he could be the leader.

  • The two most cursed head coaching jobs in the last 25 years have to be Nebraska and Tennessee. Delusional fans living in the past.

  • @DanR

I think you could add Miami to that group as well

  • I’m hearing Wisconsin rumors on this front now.

  • @wissox I’ll help him pack his bags. I’m way more worried about losing now than I was about trying to win before.

    Hello Terry Allen

LL looks awesome, but the winner at d3 route hasn’t always translated - esp at KU.

  • @dylans Wasn’t Terry Allen the coach in the mid 90’s?

  • Wisconsin will definitely make him an offer.

LL’s agent has to be licking his chops. Dude is going to get a $7M+ a year deal if I were a betting man.

  • @wissox yes. He was bad, not terrible.

Wisconsin might kick the tires on Leipold, but unless Leipold just absolutely wants that job, KU should be able to outpay Wisconsin. They’ve been known as one of the most frugal athletic departments in the P5 for a long time and why they’ve lost coaches in the past.

  • Leonhard will get the gig unless they totally implode

  • Dave Aranda is at the top of a lot of lists and Wisconsin is where he made his name. Jim Leonhard probably isn’t most peoples first choice for the job. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them make a strong push for Leipold. I hope that doesn’t happen. Despite my Badger fandom for decades it’s really only because I lived there for 15 years right when they got good in sports. I’d rather see KU football succeed at this point.

  • @BeddieKU23 said in Anyone concerned about losing Leipold to Nebraska?:

    @DanR

The difference between Nebraska, Tennessee, and Miami is that Miami is still smack in the middle of one of the best football recruiting areas in the country. Within 90 miles of campus there are dozens of D1 prospects every year. If you could convince those kids to stay local, Miami could turn around their program in two years. That’s not the case at Tennessee, and definitely not the case at Nebraska.

KU is as good a job as Nebraska right now, maybe even better. Better recruiting area (KC metro superior to Omaha/Lincoln), more reasonable fan expectations, improving facilities.

Wisconsin is a tough job as well. How do you recruit against Ohio State, Michigan, etc. You don’t have tons of recruits local, so you have to be able to go to Chicago, Ohio/Michigan/Pennsylvania for players.

Not saying that KU is a much better recruiting ground, but matching expectations to reality, KU is the more reasonable job.

  • @justanotherfan “Wisconsin is a tough job as well. How do you recruit against Ohio State, Michigan, etc. You don’t have tons of recruits local, so you have to be able to go to Chicago, Ohio/Michigan/Pennsylvania for players.”

The Barry Alvarez model was to draw a fence around the state, not so much for the skilled position but for the positions that need brawn and muscle. They did this really well for several decades even as the 2 schools you mentioned had much higher rated classes. A lot of Chicago kids go to Madison too so the fertile grounds are close enough. There’s also the factor of a lesser Big 12 now that Texas and OU are gone and replaced by far less glamorous teams like Cincy and Houston.

FWIW, Tait wrote today that the Badger opening has got to be making KU officials nervous. If I was exclusively a Badger fan he’d be the one I want. I really hope he stays in Lawrence though.

  • Idk bout that. With the transfer rules they’ll way they are now a good coach can get a team built in one or two off seasons.

  • I hope I am wrong but I think LL is gone after this year. The money and stakes are just too high for him not to leave.

He is getting so much national attention that he will be drawing large offer from likes of Wisconsin and Nebraska.

    He has ties to Wisconsin.

  • @AsadZ I’m dead serious when I say that if I were the AD I’d make him the highest paid coach in America. I’d bet my job on him at this point. I’d be BEGGING donors for the money. I’d be going to Adidas and seeing what they would do for us considering the National TV exposure LL has gotten Adidas the past 5 weeks. Literally anything that could be done to make the KU offer work I’d be doing.

He’s clearly not a fluke. He won at WW. He turned Buffalo into a top 25 team out of the freaking MAC. He has a team that won 0 games 2 years ago into the top 25.

    He’s worth literally every penny.

  • @AsadZ -Two well three things. Number one has been brought out got to consider Coach’s age at this stage of his Career , he is 58 yrs old, # 2. -He has stated multiple , multiple times and I know it’s a cliche quote you often hear , yet he saying He & his wife are really happy here and aren’t going anywhere & I actually believe the guy. Like has been brought up several conversations just strikes me as a guy that just might wanna stick around and finish what he has started.

Last our KU AD has already said steps will be taken to keep Coach, you can take it to the bank Donors are being hit up , Coach in the end you can bet anything will be offered a substantial raise here AND extension I for one just think he stays.

  • Man I’ve said this before & I’ll say it again , I just listened to another interview with Coach , and every time I hear him I’m just so impressed the guy just ooozes Class all over the place for you guys who wanna listen it was on the phog he was on the show Patrick Netherton - -great interview class period. - -Again saying how happy he was here.

Mentioned how our team was the youngest P-5 program in the Nation last year & 3rd yongest overall. That’s something we have to think about - - most these guys on this squad will all be back again next yr - -I like that- - check it out if you wanna hear his interview. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @AsadZ he said on one interview today, they weren’t interested in WI.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 said in Anyone concerned about losing Leipold to Nebraska?:

@AsadZ he said on one interview today, they weren’t interested in WI.

I hope he didn’t say anything like: “I could give a shit about [Wisconsin] right now.”

  • @Crimsonorblue22 But he’d be crazy to say I’m interested in Wisconsin right now, wouldn’t he? Even if he is, you don’t let on in the midst of a historic season in Lawrence that you might leave.

  • He’s 58

  • I’m not interested in winning the lottery. Unless I do.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 How’d you know my age?

  • @wissox How"d she know my net worth?

  • @mayjay IDK but tell me what it is and I’ll decide whether I should treat you really nice or just plain nice.

  • @wissox My wife thinks I’m worth all the treasures of all the stars in all the galaxies, but she still won’t consider me for a loan.

  • Aaaaand Matt Rhule is now going to be in the Nebraska sweepstakes. Fired by the Panthers today. Very much a Chip Kelly situation where a P5 college program will want him.

I’m serious when I say that he probably moves to the front of the line for the Nebraska job.

  • Too bad if Lance leaves. He seems to be a good coach. I would hold no ill will towards the man, KU football is about a failed abortion of an abomination. It’s just too bad we have to put up with such a horrid program or get dumped from a power five conference.

  • @dylans Don’t think he’s going to. leave. He has the foundation built, and the team has been competitive with the exception of yesterday. Another good recruiting year will make them even more competitive.

  • If I were LL, I would have an extra incentive to stay–to prove yesterday, not the first 5 games, was a fluke.

  • Not concerned about Nebraska. - -Everything I’ve been reading from Nebraska boards is he isn’t even in the picture anymore - - saying how 4 potentials have moved to the lead and he is not one of them. - Read Matt ruhle - -Gary Patterson – can’t remember the other two right now but Lance isn’t one of them. - -Even heard that Joesph is still might be the Coach.

I think Lance is staying put, wants to finish what he started. - - Might take some mor money & extension but KU better get on that like NOW. What he has done with this program n one year is incredible , we have progressed so much. SURE we have landed on tough times NOW. - -Yet who here before the Season started would of ever predicted we would win SIX games this year and be bowl eligible - - - Sure in the hell not me, and if most of you say ya I expected us to win SIX- -then I call bull shit.–you say that and then you would believe I’'m gonna be the Pope tomorrow too. - We have won SIX GAMES and now some forget just how bad - - -I mean REALLY BAD this program was and now think we should of won 8-9 games THIS YEAR. - -this is a process it is going to take more then one year to turn this around. - -We sure in the hell didn’t get this bad in one year, were not going toget that much better in a year.

Lance is getting the pieces in place , the recruits - -the talent level is improving, he will continue to use the portal , and we are STILL one of the youngest programs in D-1. - -He is who we need and I think he stays

  • Mama bear has spoken. Lance will be back

  • @FarmerJayhawk said in Anyone concerned about losing Leipold to Nebraska?:

Mama bear has spoken. Lance will be back

Exactly - - Mama likes it here I think so does Papa

  • He’s got something to prove. It may take a few years, because he has to have the talent and that requires transformational change in recruiting. But once he gets a pipeline going, I don’t think he’ll leave until he takes a team to the CFP (which may include more than 4 teams by the time we get there, but still, that’s a goal).

  • Also, KUAD is really, really pushing NIL to keep Lance. We can compete with Nubs on salary, assistant pool, and those things. We’re behind on fan support and especially NIL. Get out to Mass Strategies or OpenDorse and support our guys if you can, and tell your KU friends to do likewise. It’s even more important than the stadium.
