2024 Portal Madness Thread

Robby Avila from Indiana St announces today at 4. Promo says it’s a huge surprise!
-
More portal madness. Chucky Hepburn leaves winning program at a world class university for Louisville. A decade ago that’s an understandable basketball decision but not now. But apparently NIL money is the game changer on this one.

Game changer on a lot of Schools. Hell even Duke is losing these kids left and right. Duke’s entire roster is gone from last year - - -DUKE ! !
Two players declared,- -five entered the portal.- - NIL & making things to easy to enter the Portal/transfer has killed the College game. – 75 % of the time now , you don’t really get the chance to know the kid- -cause they gone- no loyalty anymore, your blue bloods are even getting hit- College sports has just become like an NBA minor league --the original intent of the NIL has gotten WAY over blown.- -Kids gtting 750,000 - - a Mil is not what it was originally meant to become.

“ FedEx has announced a massive $25 million name, image and likeness investment in Memphis athletics that will fund $5 million in NIL contracts over each of the next five years in key sports while promoting the company. The deal is believed to be the biggest corporate NIL partnership of its type in college athletics.” Coupled with other NIL funds, Memphis is now a bigger player.
-
@Gorilla72 wow! Winning doesn’t matter!
-
@Gorilla72 Pretty important for FedEx to get its name out there. People might forget it despite seeing trucks all over the place every day.
-
@mayjay - I’m of the opinion most FedEx trucks are lost which is why you see them driving around so much. Timely deliveries aren’t their forte in my experience.
-
@Gorilla72 lolll

@jayballer67 Duke losing everyone to portal and “NIL ruining college basketball”. Nahhh sounds pretty good to me!

umm no I don’t get my rocks off by watching Semi pro Basketball
-
@approxinfinity They are getting very highly rated class, they are becoming similar to UK
-
Kentucky lost it’s entire roster too they talking about Pope having a clen slate to start
-
@mayjay I remember it almost daily. Every time they destroy or lose one of my packages
-
Baylor picks up Duke’s Jeremy Roach. Really good pickup for them
-
Indiana lands Stanford guard Kanaan Carlyle, one of the highest ranked guards in the portal.
-
@BeddieKU23 - Roach is the guy Hunter Dickinson was “recruiting” via X. HD posted a picture under his name and stated “Jayhawk”. Was Roach contacted byKU?

I did not see Roach linked to KU beyond that tweet from Hunter. He entered the portal and word of Baylor being the destination was pretty hand and hand so sounds like Roach already knew where he was going. The word is Roach wanted to showcase being lead guard again, at Duke he played off ball a bit last year. With Harris we certainly didn’t have the ability to sell him anything he was looking for.

Old friend alert: Chris Johnson to Stephen F Austin
-
Tyrese Hunter to Memphis. Woof.
-

Quite the fall here.

Ugh.
The NCAA will no longer limit the amount of times that athletes can transfer schools. Previously, athletes were allowed to transfer one time and play immediately, but they had to sit out a full year if they transferred schools a second time without a waiver. The two transfer windows are still in place with the new ruling, and players can’t transfer schools in the middle of the year and play for their new school in the same season.
-
I don’t think Memphis has any plans to change either
-
Portal approaching 1800 entrants as we get closer to the end of the window

Overpaying for double digit loss seasons is their thing.

The caveat to the unlimited transfer rule is players must be in good academic standing in order to not sit out after that first transfer.
-
Hopefully we don’t again either

Actually, that’s a reasonable rule because it treats the student-athlete like their peer students. A student in good standing can transfer to another school without any penalty. If the athlete is taking their student status seriously, they should have the ability to move from school to school like other students.
It certainly has implications for the game. But I have a feeling that the frenzy we are going through currently will settle down a bit in the coming years as the basketball community comes to better understand the positives and negatives that come with transferring.
Right now, it’s a big unknown so there’s unbridled experimentation.
-
Koby Brea has KU in his final top 5 list with other heavy hitters. I’m doubting we land him unless some things move in a negative direction (like Griffen not committing) and Kugel not signing due to whatever is holding him up (academics is the rumor). We shall see if Brea moves faster to pick a spot without knowing some decisions. Can’t fault the staff for keeping in this one due to his 49% 3 pt shooting last year. I don’t anticipate he will improve there or replicate but with his list of pursuers his shooting abilities are noticed

Someone wrote the portal is up to 1800. Where do we read of who is in it?
-
@wissox there are a few places. Here’s one: https://247sports.com/season/2024-basketball/transferportal/

www.verbalcommits.com has it going on. Select transfers at the top.
-
Maybe someone can help me out, maybe someone knows- - -I’m sure someone has some inside info.
Now I heard and it’s just total Scuttlebutt but on TOS some people are saying that someone posted on Rivals , that Kugel is not going to qualify for KU academically- - and that KU is trying to get Javon Small – Anybody ? - -Like I said I don’t have anything to back , just read from other posters on TOS. – -Yes , No, Maybe ? . I’m sure someone knows even a little.
Not suer how I would feel on this
-
Javon Small is likely to visit KU soon, this weekend maybe. Dooley has a connection with him, recruited him to ECU where he played as a freshman.
Brea still in play, did a zoom call with the staff and there might be a visit upcoming. That would be a big swing. We’ll see
-
In NCAA fashion they have changed the grad transfer rule to now have Grad’s fall within the portal window rules. Before Grad Transfers could transfer out at any time after transfer windows closed, no longer the case. Of course they do this with just a week or so left in the current portal window.
-
Yes Small is likely to visit this weekend it’s looking. Wouldn’t be a replacement for Kugel position wise but would absolutely add value to this team as a combo guard. Dooley has a connection to him.

He is from Oklahoma St right?
-
So I posted it elsewhere but it wasn’t seen. This is certainly the current face of the portal and it’s disturbing. If Brad Underwood was actively making deals with players while they were currently playing for another team in the same conference he has lowered himself to the dregs of the college hoops world in my view. Of course it begs the question was Bill Self doing the same or did he have the decency to wait til the season was over?

Are there tampering rules around this? Once we destroy the NCAA who is going to do anything about it?
-
And this is why NIL has screwed up College Athletics— just minor league team. -Dam go buy yourselves a car - -a Hooker - -a blow up doll ,a condo–what the F - - -ever quit screwing with College Basketball.-- The fun , the excitement has ben taken out of the game.
If they are going to have this dam NIl- -then put a cap on how much is the ceiling, no way unproven players should be given this kind of money while still in College, I se players half assing it now, cause they have this ridiculous amount .
NBA screwing with the College game first–now NIL want to f - - - around. In the end, who do you think ends up paying for this NIL - -the fans, you gt these dam schools throwing money out there wazzu to gt some guy for what - -a year ? – the result tickets prices go up-- -Concessions go up-- Parking - – in one way or another this is all connected and the fans who grab their ankles and pay in the end goes up –

Wiscy should have a wealthier alumni/donor base than us, so pony up Badgers!

It really seems like there should be if there isn’t.

Snag Small and add a third new pg to the roster. Not looking to upgrade ball handling/scoring at all.

There are rules against tampering that are practically impossible to enforce. No one is allowed to contact the player so what generally happens is coaches contact a go between. Typically family, a former aau coach, a mentor etc…
-
If you ain’t playin’ the game today you ain’t going to be winning games tomorrow.
-
@BShark OK, I always thought there was. So when Storr says he had a handshake deal with Illinois in February isn’t that a major violation of the tampering rule?
I think they should reverse the sanctions handed down to us a year ago as what was alleged then was perfectly legal today. Give us our rightful spot at the top of the wins race! Give us our FF banner back for goodness sakes.
