2024 Portal Madness Thread

  • Listened to about a 30 minute pod cast with Zeke , seemed pretty well informed , level headed. They ask him about how many Schools contacted him after he entered the portal - - -he said probably on the first day maybe like fifteen , ended up with like twent five Schools probably.

Then they ere talking about Juan and I know our Huge Juan supporter will love this but Zeke said he was really looking forward to playing with Juan, , said Juan Basketball IQ ( now say it isn’t so-- could it be ? - -surely not ) --but Zeke said Juan’s Basketball IQ is so high/ off the chart- - NO THAT CAN’T BE can it KUballin ?- - saying if your open he is going to find you — -shut up - -that can’t be right-- —not Juan, that scrub needs to be benched right Kuballin? – what the hell is Zeke talking about --that can’t be the same Juan, Zeke saying Juan will make other wings, or others flourish - -I just can’t believe Zeke would say such a thing like that about a scrubby bench player like Juan - - no way roflmao-- I’m gonna have to dig into this more, I must be thinking of a different Juan- -lol— give them HELL JUANDO. glad your back

  • @jayballer67 that is a fantastic point. If other high talent players want to play with Juan, that should certainly be considered by people who want high talent players on our team.

  • @jayballer67 - 9 hours ago, Kugel reposted Bossi’s Tweet about Storr commiting. Lots of KU stuff on his X account.

  • @jayballer67

There is potentially some academic issues regarding Kugel coming here. Rumor mill but may have legs.

  • Given our remaining targets, would it possibly be to our advantage if Kugel did not arrive?

  • Mitchell really left the brothahood for Methzu. At least I know he has bad taste in teams.

Well kinda mixed feelings/emotions on this one.----I mean heard the kid has a world of talent , that’s a good thing BUT also heard he didn’t take very well to being yanked out of starting rotation and didn’t take kindly coming off the Bench.

I fully believe IF he lands here it will be for depth and will be coming off the bench. He better have his stuff together or he will neve see the court all we need is more drama/headcase. - So in that respect really doesn’t matter if he makes it or not. , don’t need anymore friction/drama , some kid pouting cause he isn’t starting and be a cancer to the rest of the team , Now If he has the right approach - -team player then great for sure - -can use his talent – so you see kinda up in the air with this one.

  • @jayballer67

He’s a high risk/high reward play. We landed others at least so his impact if it doesn’t work out should be minimized greatly by having Storr, Mayo & soon Griffen on the roster. I’m still intrigued by Kugel’s immense potential but I’ll only worry about if he sticks around.

  • More brothahood entries. TJ Power yesterday (former Top 20 recruit) someone KU recruited & now today freshman forward Sean Stewart.

Duke currently only has 2 scholarship players left.

    Hate to see it

  • @BeddieKU23 yes, that’s horrible. Really feeling bad for Duke today. And Kentucky, while I’m at it. And Missouri (very sad).

  • My head is spinning. This is madness. I kind of want to stop being a NCAA football and basketball fan. I know I won’t, but to get all excited about this team next year now with guys we really have no idea how they’ll mesh, learn to play up to Selfs standards, how they’ll cede to other stars accumulated here, if they’ll defer to guys who’ve stuck around, like KJ and DaJuan, and etc are all in my mind.

And then, next April we’ll go through it again, because we have guys coming in who aren’t satisfied starting on a FF team.

The over reaction to the people who for decades have perpetuated the lie that playing for an NCAA team is some sort of indentured servitude is what has caused this to happen. And don’t forget, 3 months ago we were watching bowl games with half the starters gone giving a big middle finger to the school and fans that offered them several hundred thousand dollars worth of education, housing and fabulous trips to glamorous locations. So lets not only open up the funds but also open up the doors so that kids can seek mo money down the road.

I feel bad for the faithful to their schools players like Elmarko and Jamari who both have potential and now are looking at a depth chart that suddenly will find them much deeper on it. How in the heck is Bill Self going to develop talent like he’s famous for when you won’t be giving them the opportunity to prove they’ve grown up since their rocky freshman years?

HS recruits that aren’t Micky D’s AA’s? They’re sitting by their phones waiting (well no one sits by their phones anymore) for major power coach to call and offer. Finally it rings and it’s UMKC or UWGB or whomever. Time to adjust your hopes and expectations if you’re that kid. But then that system screws over the mid-majors who get decent talent and then lose them too, as the Mayo’s of the world give their middle finger to the coach and fans who gave them support. (I know Mayo’s a local kid so at least there’s some logic to his transfer).

    This is all disturbing.

Dam I think Stwart is going to be a absolute tstu.-- Seen him play some this yr and when he was in---- -things happened

  • Just like I was saying a couple of minutes ago. - Duke fan base is pissed , especially about Stewart. Big physical , baller , kid is gonna be really good , makes things happen - -scores the ball in his limited minutes this Season -intensity Scheyer made a big mistake not handling this kid correctly, needed more minutes- -you screwed up Jon lmao- -you’ll see

I’m still all in on football. For now. But I will spend very little time in front of a TV next basketball season. Even for KU. Progress has ruined me.

  • This aged well… 😂 https://x.com/THIRTY30RACK/status/1774616665864487093

    Philon looking?

  • @approxinfinity I really hope not, I love Philon’s game.

  • Robby Avila from Indiana St announces today at 4. Promo says it’s a huge surprise!

  • More portal madness. Chucky Hepburn leaves winning program at a world class university for Louisville. A decade ago that’s an understandable basketball decision but not now. But apparently NIL money is the game changer on this one.

Game changer on a lot of Schools. Hell even Duke is losing these kids left and right. Duke’s entire roster is gone from last year - - -DUKE ! !

Two players declared,- -five entered the portal.- - NIL & making things to easy to enter the Portal/transfer has killed the College game. – 75 % of the time now , you don’t really get the chance to know the kid- -cause they gone- no loyalty anymore, your blue bloods are even getting hit- College sports has just become like an NBA minor league --the original intent of the NIL has gotten WAY over blown.- -Kids gtting 750,000 - - a Mil is not what it was originally meant to become.

  • This post is deleted!

  • “ FedEx has announced a massive $25 million name, image and likeness investment in Memphis athletics that will fund $5 million in NIL contracts over each of the next five years in key sports while promoting the company. The deal is believed to be the biggest corporate NIL partnership of its type in college athletics.” Coupled with other NIL funds, Memphis is now a bigger player.

  • @Gorilla72 wow! Winning doesn’t matter!

  • @Gorilla72 Pretty important for FedEx to get its name out there. People might forget it despite seeing trucks all over the place every day.

  • @mayjay - I’m of the opinion most FedEx trucks are lost which is why you see them driving around so much. Timely deliveries aren’t their forte in my experience.

  • @Gorilla72 lolll

  • @jayballer67 Duke losing everyone to portal and “NIL ruining college basketball”. Nahhh 🙂 sounds pretty good to me!

umm no I don’t get my rocks off by watching Semi pro Basketball

  • @approxinfinity They are getting very highly rated class, they are becoming similar to UK

  • Kentucky lost it’s entire roster too they talking about Pope having a clen slate to start

  • @mayjay I remember it almost daily. Every time they destroy or lose one of my packages

  • Baylor picks up Duke’s Jeremy Roach. Really good pickup for them

  • Indiana lands Stanford guard Kanaan Carlyle, one of the highest ranked guards in the portal.

  • @BeddieKU23 - Roach is the guy Hunter Dickinson was “recruiting” via X. HD posted a picture under his name and stated “Jayhawk”. Was Roach contacted byKU?

I did not see Roach linked to KU beyond that tweet from Hunter. He entered the portal and word of Baylor being the destination was pretty hand and hand so sounds like Roach already knew where he was going. The word is Roach wanted to showcase being lead guard again, at Duke he played off ball a bit last year. With Harris we certainly didn’t have the ability to sell him anything he was looking for.

  • Old friend alert: Chris Johnson to Stephen F Austin

  • Tyrese Hunter to Memphis. Woof.

  • So did we drop the ball and let Griffin leave campus with out committing ?

  • We good

Got paid I’m sure but man, Memphis is like the island of misfit toys.

    Quite the fall here.

  • Ugh.

The NCAA will no longer limit the amount of times that athletes can transfer schools. Previously, athletes were allowed to transfer one time and play immediately, but they had to sit out a full year if they transferred schools a second time without a waiver. The two transfer windows are still in place with the new ruling, and players can’t transfer schools in the middle of the year and play for their new school in the same season.

  • @BShark

I don’t think Memphis has any plans to change either

  • Portal approaching 1800 entrants as we get closer to the end of the window

Overpaying for double digit loss seasons is their thing. 😉

The caveat to the unlimited transfer rule is players must be in good academic standing in order to not sit out after that first transfer.

  • @BShark

    Hopefully we don’t again either

Actually, that’s a reasonable rule because it treats the student-athlete like their peer students. A student in good standing can transfer to another school without any penalty. If the athlete is taking their student status seriously, they should have the ability to move from school to school like other students.

It certainly has implications for the game. But I have a feeling that the frenzy we are going through currently will settle down a bit in the coming years as the basketball community comes to better understand the positives and negatives that come with transferring.

Right now, it’s a big unknown so there’s unbridled experimentation.

  • Koby Brea has KU in his final top 5 list with other heavy hitters. I’m doubting we land him unless some things move in a negative direction (like Griffen not committing) and Kugel not signing due to whatever is holding him up (academics is the rumor). We shall see if Brea moves faster to pick a spot without knowing some decisions. Can’t fault the staff for keeping in this one due to his 49% 3 pt shooting last year. I don’t anticipate he will improve there or replicate but with his list of pursuers his shooting abilities are noticed

  • Someone wrote the portal is up to 1800. Where do we read of who is in it?
