KU vs UCF Game Chat

I’m prob notorious for over reacting, I even admit it. But this is right up there with TCU IMO. Elmarko 5 assists and 4 rebounds in the last two games. Sorry it ain’t working out, glad BS pulled him but Juan also needs to be pulled at times.
-
Holy crap. That sucked.
Shocking loss. I guess Vegas knew something we didn’t.
Would have been nice if coach realized we have a 7 footer who can score if you feed him.
Juan and Kevin with absolutely lazy, pointless turnovers. So sloppy. I don’t get it. Realize you have the ball and protect it! Jeez.
Furphy! Nice.
Juan! Not so nice. In fact awful and thoughtless.
Timberlake. Just fire him. I thought that off court scuffle would do something for him, at least fire him up to not be stuffed at the rim — again. His finest moment as a Jayhawk! Wasted.
Hunter was nearly the invisible man I thought.
-
18 & 9 can you figure out the riddle….what do these numbers signify the last 2 games and what does it truly tell the story about this team….
-
Thankfully I didn’t have to watch that abomination of a game and only got to listen to last 10 minutes. I’m going to refrain commenting on individual performances since I didn’t get to warch the game, but UCF is probably the 2nd or 3rd worst team in the Big 12 so this is a really bad loss for KU.
-
BS says that Hunter is dealing with a knee issue.
-
@rockchalkjayhawk Hard to feed the post when teams sag off and guard the paint daring our 5th yr sr to shoot
Tough to make passes when no one gets Self’s patented (one dribble/foot in the paint each possession by the ball handler)
I’d warned many of you that this is a down year and was blocked.
We’ve had bad losses before and will again but 11-7 is this teams ceiling and second weekend maybe first if we play another team full of athletes like last year
You all love Juan yet without remy we lose to creighton round of 32. Bill’s blind but now has no where to turn because Juan is the best pg on this team.
Never have I read from enough message board know it alls that these new freshman need to score to help us……Hell no how about the fifth year senior gets 10-12 a night because he’s unguarded for 85% of the freaking game. Even when he drives his own defender sags off waiting for his famous jump pass under the goal (jr high stuff if any of you know ball).
Juan HAS to score for us to be a top 5 team and beat the uk’s, Houston’s ect.
HE CAN DO IT yet he isn’t and every game he continues to not hunt his shot from the tip those passing lanes are tight because he can’t beat his man off the bounce. Most overrated player by Self in his coaching career. There’s a reason Remy played more minutes
-

I’m gonna guess turnover average and total 3 pters made
-
@rockchalkjayhawk close!
last two games we’ve turned it over 18 times and only forced 9
This is direct correlation to our guard play. Bigs aren’t causing turnovers right and left nor turning it over a bunch except when our guards throw terrible entry passes and put them in awful positions.
We supposedly have two defensive stud guards who are seniors yet we are the ones turning twice as much as we are causing other teams to turn it over
This is a correlation to how teams defend us because guys won’t look to score and teams know it. They also don’t drive and attack. Our pg doesn’t shoot a free throw hardly ever…it’s been documented how few free throws he’s shot versus other KU guard. It’s brutal. He isn’t quick
This is also a correlation to how defensively we are not laterally quick and often pushed off our spots when guys drive. Weak
-
@FarmerJayhawk I actually happen to think the team probably proved my point. And does so kinda regularly so far… shrugging shoulders
-
A few interesting tidbits from the boxscore:
FG % KU: 51% UCF: 42%
KU made two more FGs than UCF
KU made 6 3pters, UCF made 7
And a big reason we lost: KU was 6-11 and UCF 14-18 from the free throw line.
UCF with SEVEN blocks. wow.
Huge shocker: KU nearly had 8 players with 10+ minutes on the court. That’s not very common for KU. Maybe Self’s got us beat in the brain department by not playing the bench that much usually! ha.
And the KU bench outscored UCF’s bench 17-8. that is beyond shocking
KU at one point had a 16 pt lead. A 16 pt lead!!! fer effs sake.
-
Wow watching the game was rough but this thread looks like it was even rougher.
-
I’m ready for the Dajuan era to be over. I’m just gonna be honest and say it. Good kid and tough player but I want a shot creating pg in the modern era.
-
@TYOHawk Be careful you’ll get banned for having this opinion or pointing out his shortcomings in relation to our play this year. You’ll get our record thrown in your face while ignoring the product on the court.
-
Remember when people didn’t care if Mccullar left or not and I said he had offensive potential that wasn’t tapped yet? Remember when I was sick of Dave and ready to move on before his last tournament? Remember when Udoka was slow getting out to guard Villanova’s 5, and then came back the next year ripped and spry? Remember when clueless Jeff Withey turned into a shotblocking monster? People talking about Remy forget how awful he was until he wasn’t.
Aaron Miles only scored 9.3 ppg his senior year while shooting 50% from 3 his senior year. We didnt have a problem with him shooting 24% from 3 his sophomore season and playing 30 MPG on a team that made it to the championship.
That which makes us different makes us special, memorable, and interesting.
-
@kuballin10 no man, you get banned for being relentlessly annoying during a gamechat, not for having an opinion. its just temporary. like a timeout chair for bigboys.
When you got banned for the Mauie Wowie gamechat, your last comment was:
Juan into double team
Freshman mistakes from a 10th year senior
Him and Kev are so dumb with the ball and it’s because they aren’t processing the game quick enough
Hyperbolical, insulting nonsense. Kev and Dajuan aren’t dumb. They have no problem “processing the game”. He isn’t a 10th year senior. Just obnoxious hateful drivel. And it was going that way for some time, after you were asked to chill. So… timeout chair, big guy! And we didn’t have to listen to Debbie Downer all night.
-
@kuballin10 making up BS about the dude who puts in his own free time and money to keep this place going is low. I get you have a victim complex but keep it on the DL from now on.
-
@approxinfinity living in an America where anything in that statement gets you banned from anything. Is just plain ridiculous. You’re part of the problem and so far from the solution. You all can ban me and whoever else ya want. And fist bump your own chests all the while. That’s just plain pathetic. You all enjoy your lil sunshine and rainbow world. I’m audi 5 thousand. Before I get banned for having a real life view and then committing the horrifying and so feeling hurtful crime of actually expressing it. Lol. Bunch of fuckin candy ass ppl. Don’t get a splinter!!!
-
@cragarhawk holy crap take a Xanax. Arguing on substance has always been a thing here.
-
Wow. This evolved into a bunch of whiny and sad displays.
I woke up wanting to say:
"Thank you Nick Saban for retiring and distracting the talking heads from talking about our (EVERY YEAR) meltdown. "
But it’s GROWN MEN here who seem to be the bigger snowflakes. I now see why so many people have left. It’s a constant cluster f#ck of everyone being able to criticize kids who are just trying to live their lives. Grow up. Get a life outside of posting on so many places. I’ll think twice about logging back in.
Bring it. I’m just a fan. Always will be. May be frustrated as heck at times but there’s nothing I say or type that makes any difference in the whole scheme of things.
#RCJH
-
@FarmerJayhawk he beat up some good ones too
-
@cragarhawk do you go to a house party, get piss drunk, climb on the coffee table and start insulting the host? Dont be a dick. Our number one, and only, rule.
You seem to have this place confused for Facebook or some other soulless corporate data trap. Here at kubuckets, we dont steal your data, but we do expect you to not be an asshole. Novel concept?
-
@RockChalkinTexas stay, please. This was just a bad night. Lets write it off and move on
-
Today is a new day
-
@FarmerJayhawk substance or substances?
-
@kjayhawks feel sorry for OU.
-
On a Monday morning a man walks into the golf course clubhouse and sees his regular foursome at a table. His neck is covered with a bandage and the guys ask Bob, what the heck happened to you? Bob, speaking in a hoarse voice answers you all know that me and the wife play together after church on Sundays? The guys say yeah. Well you guys know that #12 on the back nine the par five with a cow pasture and OB on the left? Yeah Bob we know. I gets up and smacks a beauty right down the middle. We drive up to the ladies tee and Beverly snaps hooks one over the fence to the left. She plays a second one into the fairway. Bev said she paid a dollar fifty for that first ball and wants to go over and find it. So we shinny over and under the fence. We look everywhere but no luck while avoiding cow pies and thistle. We are about to give up when I see a heifer with something shiny in her butt. I walks over and lifts up her tail and say this looks like yours honey. She hits me in the throat with a nine iron.
-
Almost afraid to comment after that one! I got to keep that in mind for my next drinking, I mean golf, adventure.
I see a lot of trash piled on the players, and they did stink it up, but I feel this ones on Self. We know he knows what it takes to attack a zone. Hell the announcers brought it up a time or two. Put a big that can pass and shoot a 15 footer on the free throw line and get them the ball. Seems we have such a big but did that ever happen? Not that I saw. If Jaybate was still around he would be screaming that HCBS brought them into this game flat and let them struggle and I would be hard pressed to find an argument to oppose him.
No idea why or what he was doing but imo Self could have done more to prevent that meltdown against the zone. I am very interested in how the team will respond to this loss and would love to be a fly on the wall in the next film session.
-
Coach said after the game hunters knee was bruised and bothering him. That’s why he sat out longer than usual. Probably why the zone offense wasn’t working as great!
-
@approxinfinity yes
-
@approxinfinity looks like circulation is down. Yer gonna have to run a 2 for 1 special. Do us all a favor and don’t run the advertising promotions on “that other board.” That’s really fulla Ds.:)
This is the kinder, gentler board!
-
My grand daughter said I was kind but I think that meant easy.
-
WOW just now able to get to my relaxation room for the day ,What the HELL HAPPENED ? ii’m not posting on this thread, think enough has already been said. Like I said time to move on, you can’t change the past, you can only determine the future - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
It’s all my fault. I said we’d have to play like the Topeka YMCA year to lose and sure enough it came true. Its right there in the first post. Shame on me. Call me names, I deserve it.
-
@BeddieKU23 Buttmunch.
-
Elmarko with a -16 +/-…I honestly thought it was worse. He’s a shell of a player right now
-
The entire momentum changed when HD went to bench with two fouls and KU up by 16 with 3 some mins left in first half.
Players got lackadaisical and made few dumb plays and all of a sudden lead got cut to 8.
I thought as UCF was scoring Self should have taken a timeout but instead, he let them play while trusting that they will make stops.
-
@BeddieKU23 said in KU vs UCF Game Chat:

I did make the correlation, but I was afraid to mention it for fear some of the angry townspeople would be gathering feathers and heating up some tar.
-
@rockchalkjayhawk we have discussed trying to recruit some more good folk on occasion in the past but I think the next great additions to our fold may already be reading and not participating yet. Thats happened numerous times.
-
What a perplexing game. At one point, I really thought I had entered another dimension… something from the Twilight Zone. I can understand most road losses. But this one… UCF is bad. And they didn’t have one of those “miracle games” where a player or two went off for 30 on 75% trey shooting.
I thought we did show up for this game… especially after running out to a 16-point lead. Then what happened? We went soft. And with every soft possession, we lost momentum while UCF gained momentum. That was like watching a game played between turtles.
Where was the team that played UCONN tough for 40 minutes? Hunter had a bruised knee… so… Hunter and all of our guys are going to face nicks during the season. We just went soft. We need more from Juan. In previous years he never really had to be the general of the team, but he needs to be the general now. It is one of the duties of being a PG.
What does that entail? Communication. Cheerleading. Hustling. Directing.
Our bench wasn’t great in this game but our bench was about as good as our starting 4 we count on. I’m talking about AFTER our 16-point lead… when we lost composure and never got it back again.
Hopefully, this will be the “chip” we need to finally buckle down every game. I don’t believe this was a trap game. There are signs of this being a regular occurrence if we don’t make significant change. I mentioned before that I could see us losing up to 3 of our first 10 games. I’m adjusting that to 4+ unless we make changes.
PLAYING SOFT:
OFFENSE: Our guys do everything they can to avoid contact. Contact is a part of basketball, and if you don’t realize that at this level… wow! We shot few free throws on a poor team. Our offense only hummed in the open court, free of contact. When it came down to half-court offense, it sputtered and half the time lead to turnovers as UCF would turn up the heat as the shot clock wound down. Only Kevin, on rare occasion, would drive the ball hard. We need our guys to drive the ball hard and put their chests into contact. Yes, UCF has a reputation for blocked shots. So what. Draw contact and get to the FT line. KJ should become a prime weapon for driving hard… not just when he sees a clear path for a dunk. Juan… same.
DEFENSE: UCF drove at will. Every single player on that team was able to turn the corner on our defense. Pathetic. And that’s not how we played UCONN so I know we should expect more! UCF did not have much of an offense, and we never disrupted their flow. Jet lag? Playing in a weird place? We should have forced more TOs leading to runouts. It wouldn’t have taken many more to make this game a “W.”
I hope this is like the UK beat down we took a couple of years ago and we respond. I’m not certain of it…
-
@drgnslayr Would your wife have a particular “P” word for this team?
-
lol
Ex-wife now!
I don’t think these guys are “P’s.” I think they just need more cheerleading within the team.
Typically… we see plenty of cheer leading when we are kicking other teams’ butts… but when do we see it when we struggle?
Remember back in the Jaybate days? Mezo ball?
If our guys were playing for their lives… would this have been the result?
We need a chip. Something to motivate them to buckle down.
-
I’m pretty disappointed in our guards all around but especially defensively. Kevin, Juan and Elmarko can’t stop the dribble drive for 2 that are supposed to be elite defenders. I’m not impressed so far this season. Offensively it’s starts with Juan and Elmarko. Hunter and KJ can’t get clean touches because the defense has 2 guys that don’t have to be guarded. They have high turnover numbers recently because they both look scared to shoot the ball. Gonna have to get aggressive and make teams respect and guard you, period.
-
@drgnslayr I’m very sorry about the “ex” part. Drgn - I had no idea!
-
Snow day. So I should be sleeping, but when you wake up and think you’re going to work, and then you’re not, you kind of get woke right away!
My tendency is when things go south during a game and then after is to just stop commenting. In the old days of newspapers I wouldn’t read the story of the game. I still haven’t watched video of our loss to Syracuse in 03, or UW’s loss to Duke in 15, the Villanova beatdown in 18, etc.
I see someone showed up, kudos to @approxinfinity again for his paroling of him, but I guess he got irksome again. I just hate the piling on of guys during a bad game. I’m sure i’ve been guilty of this like 1.2k times but the thought of writing a description of a kid with the F word and you realize he’s 18-19 years old is just beyond sanity. I’m slightly OK with it when you’re an overly compensated professional and you’re just mailing it in day after day, but even then, we as fans don’t know anything about what’s going on with the player. Was HD’s knee hurting bad enough that he didn’t want to play but coach said give it a try? Or was he making an excuse? (I doubt it). Do we win with a normally healthy HD? Without having seen the game (grr…ESPN) maybe we do win. We do know we’re kind of thin on the bench and even with finding a 5th starter. The alleged rape charge against the Texas kid has certainly changed us from a solid contender to a possible FF type team ceiling.
Not sure if anyone noticed, we weren’t the only top 10 team to struggle this week. Odd times in NCAA basketball. In a way it was kind of funny to watch KU fans mock Houston “you’re playing in a real league now”. Maybe our loss was karma! I do think our loss was the worst of those top 10 losses.
Ranking our bad losses? This is right up there! TCU game “Topeka Y could’ve beat us” is the standard bearer I think. Somehow we lost at home to Oral Roberts a while ago.
One thing I know, Saturday a good OU team comes in to AFH and Bill Self will have this team ready to send them back down I-35 with a 2 game losing streak.
-
@wissox I agree we don’t need need to be spewing the "F’ word around. In my “regular” life I try to watch my mouth, but I slip up sometimes.
The thing is, on an anonymous forum, it’s a little easier to let your guard down. Add in the great frustration of watching your favorite team look like a bunch of bumbling idiots and its easier to let curse words fly. I’m sure it’s regretted after the fact.
We definitely DO need to stop personal verbal attacks on players and coaches. They are trying their best. Pretty sure they don’t want to look like morons in front of the whole world. Sometimes you have a bad day.
Great expectations can bring great disappointment
-
@nuleafjhawk everyone just had a bad night everyone needs to wash the hands with it and move forward. Hopefully today we have a more enjoyable game.
-
Game chat is and always has been toxic. A lot of insecurities laid bare.
-
I am another one that needs to apologize, mostly right during game time my crimson & blue blood get flowing-- and gets boiling when things don’t work out. I get out of hand making some posts probably don’t need to be said. I mean it’s not like the guys woke up on a game day morning and said to themselves - - - -Self let’s go out and really play a horrible game today.
There are factors to consider , # 1 like has been stated before , sure it seems obvious to us but this is why they play the game, roll the ball out and say let’s go, you just never know. I mean sure we all thought this was a given , we were suppose to win and win big. I think there are people here me included that this game should be easier, and I think whether people want to admit or not it’s ok I think a lot of people were basing this of what our little friends in Manhattan had done against this same group. When things got bad then we lashed out – was it legit ? or frustration ? as KU fans logically or not we NEVER want KU to lose, this just doesn’t happen very often and we have gotten spoiled , and spoiled rotten by the winning , and yet like I said there were things to consider, UCF had just gotten their butts kicked the game before , it was a road game for us and we all know how hard it is to win on the road in the Big 12 , then we have the IT’S THE KU FACTOR going against us, we are everybody’s GAME OF THE YEAR going against us. This just shows even the best can take it on the chin once and a while.
Just remember guys these guys do try, maybe not as good sometimes , but they aren’t trying to lose, a lot of things go into a game, bad calls , on the road , being KU , the opponent looking bad the game before , playing a constantly high ranked team, and you just never know from game to game, Having said all of this I will say this ONE THING we have just got to take care of the ball better.
Again I apologize even in advance for todays game, I’ll admit I just get to wrapped up game days and if it turns bad - -I act like an idiot some times, so on to today’s and let’s do this – -ROCK CHALK
-
I am sorry if I have offended anyone. I want to commiserate with fellow fans when someone does boneheaded plays because I want the team to always play their best. I want the team to show they are the best in the land and hope that their conditioning and understanding of Bill’s vision and their dietary choices and their life situation is allowing them to focus on the reason they chose to come to Kansas to play in the 1st place. I get passionate and express that frustration openly with likeminded individuals. I will refrain from doing so in the future, since I understand it is frowned upon. I will observe in the background. Rock Chalk!
-
Meanwhile… back at the ranch…
Is UCF for real?
Going down to Austin and spanking Texas… wow!
Even though we lost to UCF, might they become our buddies this year by pulling upsets all over the place?
I guess Terry doesn’t hold them in esteem… Ghees… Terry… let it go, man!
