@TYOHawk Bobby isn’t good. Can’t shoot. Not really elite at anything. Constantly unavailable.
He still has potential, but I’d rather find another guy.

Boggles my mind when Self says he’s the next great one. You saw signs from Frank, Devonte, Dot and Sherron early.
-
I thought I saw some things early on last year but he is looking more and more like a career back-up. I am not sure the staff will move on or if he will want to. Too early to say.
Availability is a big thing too. He’s shown now that he is banged up pretty frequently. There are several guys you can point to over the years across multiple sports that would have been good or even great but they just couldn’t stay healthy.
-
Bobby was a big time recruiter for this class. He was a great host and helped land some guys.
The math will be interesting. Definitely will lose Jalen, Gradey, Martin. Likely McCullar. Possibly Zach, Cuffe. -1 due to NCAA BS. Add McDowell, Jackson, Johnson. So there’s not going to be a ton of room. Maybe 3 spots at most? A starting caliber wing is a must get. Maybe 2 with McCullar gone. We’re good at guard IMO. Then it’s best player available. I’d love a one year rental scorer/shooter (wing/guard, doesn’t matter) to take the pressure off the newbies and to rebalance the scoring load.
-
How sure are we that McCullar will move on? Obviously he’ll at least declare and go through the draft process again like he should, but if he doesn’t like his feedback (probably going to be the case), does he return since he’d likely make more in NIL money than on a G-League or international contract? This is another area where NIL is a game changer, especially at a program like KU, where NIL deals can be pretty lucrative.

Good Point
-
Yeah been thinking the same on him. He hasn’t shown the offensive game to make it in the NBA. Returning another year would give him a shot to be a featured player
-
It’s time for Kevin to start his pro career. He is who he is, and that is a dude playing overseas.

I wouldn’t say it’s ideal but another year gives you 10-14 pts ppg tons of rebounds, steals and headaches
-
Kevin is good glue guy and defender but if he’s our main guy we are in trouble.

As long as he doesn’t get Jalen/Ochai volume of shots I’m fine with it… begrudgingly.

I don’t have any doubts Self could find 2-3 wings in the portal if needed but Kev would be a solid returnee next year with KJ/Juan in the starting lineup.
We definitely don’t have a go-to guy on the roster right now for next season at guard/wing like we’ve had (if Kev does leave). I know KJ has ascended but he’s got no range and projecting him to become a shooter in one off-season is dreamland.
I’m basically saying I’m really concerned about next year’s roster and who’s going to be the guy that scores points. There just isn’t that option staring us in the face right now.

Oddly I had that concern about this year’s roster. Still do!
-
I was confident Jalen would score but at this level he’s exceeded expectations. I definitely feel you regarding this current group still.
-
Jalen has shocked me this yr! Not counting last game.
-
Udeh is the go to guy next season book it

No way will Udeh leave!

I’m trying to bite my tongue, but I seriously expect KJ to start at the 4 and Udeh at the 5. If we go land a stud in the portal, I reserve the right to change my mind. But if we don’t get just a guaranteed starter type in the portal I think Bill is sicko enough to do this.
-
@Kcmatt7 That’s my thought as well. I do think KJ might be able to play some bully ball similar to Wilson on drives just without the shot to back it up. My secret hope is that KJ has a serviceable jumper that he just hasn’t shown yet. I know it’s a long shot.

Yea since the days of Mitch Lightfoot we’ve been hoping a big man could develop a shot… I don’t think it is crazy to think KJ could stretch his range to the top of the key. But I also don’t see how his shooting is the liability some think it is. He is shooting 64% from 2 which would be one of the best in the country (sports-reference is down or I’d check exactly where he stands).
If Udeh approaches a similar efficiency on the block next season I’m pretty sure it will work, and work well.
-
He dunks a lot. I’d love to see his two point percentage on jump shots but I think those kind of stats are locked behind pay sites (or individual research which would take a lot of time). I really don’t like that pairing offensively.
-
Hoop Math has him at 49% on 2 pt jumpers. 72% on shots at the rim matching “he dunks a lot”.

Not as bad as I thought. Though I imagine anything not a dunk/lay-up is classified as a jumper.
-
Crazy Wake has a guy shooting 89% from the field. 60-67 on the year. Wild
-
@BShark at the 4 hopefully after spending all summer working on his shot.

This is pretty good.
I also don’t think you can discount his ability to get to the rim. He’s a freak athlete so getting to the rim is something he’s going to be able to do at the 4 or the 5.
-
UT is one of the best offenses in the country starting 3 players who basically won’t take a 3. And Hunter is the 4th and he is a bad shooter.
It isn’t the death of KU’s offense to play the 2 together.
-
I hope we are not revisiting this discussion in November as we score 60 points in a close win in our exhibition.
-
Yeah good point. Next year I expect him to be even more prolific in the paint. Dude should just live with a coach in the gym and figure out some post moves with his back to basket. He’s really just scratching the surface of what he could do with development.

Oh lord - -let’s hope not
-
Udeh’s development is huge for this year to have a deep tournament run and next season in general. Hope he keeps coming on!

Hunter has not been the BMOC we all thought he would be. They could’ve used Ramey the other night.

Yeah, OOF. He’s gotten worse in almost every category.
-
Let’s see, who thought we should’ve picked Hunter?
-
@Crimsonorblue22 I’ll be honest, I wanted him over hanging onto a guy like Cuffe. I thought he’d look elsewhere after last season.
-
He’d look better here. Big part of this is the loss of Beard. Big drop off in coaching to Rodney Perry.
I’d take Hunter in a second if he enters the portal again because of the Beard situation.

The issue with KJ at the 4 is he has no range so playing him next to Udeh takes away pretty much all of KJ’s offensive strengths because he won’t have the room to drive or run Pick and Roll. If you play a 2 big line up with KJ, the other player has to have range to space the floor and open up the paint. This is how Self was able to play KJ and Zach Clemence together in the KSU for a short stretch. Clemence has tge range that defenses have to cover him on the perimeter compared to Udeh or Ejiofor who don’t have that kind of range.
If KU were to have a line up with Harris, McCullar, Adams, and Udeh next year, Self would need to go buy a playmaker at the 2 spot, otherwise defenses would just pack the paint and dare KU to make a 3.

-
@Texas-Hawk-10 Or KJ has to develop an outside game in the offseason
-
He’ll get a look if he transfers https://247sports.com/college/basketball/recruiting/Article/Grant-Nelson-North-Dakota-State-generating-NBA-Draft-buzz-204878983/
-
Looked better against us when he was a freshman then this year but yeah he’s a real quality mid-major big.
-
Sooo players from Tech will be available. I like Jaylon Tyson.
-
@BShark I mean that is a good team that just didn’t quite get it done this year. I’d definitely be making calls.
I’m interested in Isaacs if he’s willing to openly compete. Tyson can do everything you’d ask him to, and would fit right in. Aimaq proved he can do it against good competition. Batcho would be the best true big man on our roster right this second.
-
@Kcmatt7 Yeah not sure we take a big but if Zach leaves (prob best for both sides) then you’d have to take a look at Batcho. Not as interested in Isaacs but there is some talent there.
-
@BShark Isaacs has the “it” factor. You hold your breath everytime he shoots because you think its going in. Probably a better fit at a place like Miami or UNC where they just roll the ball out and play.

Agree. Not a great fit here.
-
@BShark curious why not? Is it because of all the guards we have coming in?
A true shooting 2 guard like pop who can play alongside mr assist in juan would be a good fit I’d think.
Explain ur logic u know some ball and clearly connected
Tyson and the big 11 from France I’m on board with.
We need: Legit big scoring 5 Crazy athlete who can do all 3 phases at the 4 Shooter at that 2-3 spot who can attack
