KU will have its pick of guys when the job opens. I trust Goff.
-
Goff loves KU!
-
@BShark If I were Kentucky I would fire the assistants and hire a couple that can coach. Cal can recruit himself. Although I think youāre right in assuming a change of scenery would be good for him and maybe Kentucky too.
-
Zeke Mayo has been popping off lately. From Lawrence.

Bill will never let Bobby walk though and he should

Would bet on them trying to get 2 starter level guys.
-
@BShark They need two starters if MJ doesnāt come back.
Maybe 3 depending on how you look at the big man situation.
-
@Kcmatt7 Even if he is, tbh.
Zach and Bobby both are not what the staff hoped for. Donāt think Bobby will be shown the door necessarily but Bill just took a class with 3 guards for a reason.
-
Just take every top level wing with size out there in the portal.
-
Bobby canāt stay healthy. Either he has the worst luck or itās a real issue

Personal wish list
Scoring wing for the 4 spot Personal favorites that I think we could get: Chris Ledlum/Taylor Hendricks
2/3/4 defender with upside Personal favorite: Teafale Lenard Jr
Other guys Iād be interested in: Zeke Mayo, Brandin Podziemski (old friend alert), Aaron Estrada
I think two starter level guys would be enough and then other additions (depending on how many leave) could be good solid bench pieces.
I was thinking an experience 5 would be nice but itās hard to see that happening plus we should have Udeh and Zuby in year 2. Think we have enough down low.
-
If Zach doesnāt return, Iād definitely be interested in another 4-type body to pair with Adams. Keeps you 4 deep in the post while differing what you have back already between the 2 young bigs and KJ.
Going to need multiple scoring wings. Ideally one is more defender and the other is more perimeter shooter. Iām sure Self sees Gradey/Jalen/Kev moving on after the season so heāll be out there looking to fill voids.
-
I think there is room for a starter on the perimeter and a bench guy, just thinking out loud.
Either Johnson or Elmarko is a starter. Juan back at PG. KJ is a starter. Have a hard time believing Rice isnāt a starter if he is back. Only leaves one spot.

Going to be very transparent. He just doesnāt seem that goodā¦a poor manās version of Dajuan who is always hurt.
-
@TYOHawk Bobby isnāt good. Canāt shoot. Not really elite at anything. Constantly unavailable.
He still has potential, but Iād rather find another guy.

Boggles my mind when Self says heās the next great one. You saw signs from Frank, Devonte, Dot and Sherron early.
-
I thought I saw some things early on last year but he is looking more and more like a career back-up. I am not sure the staff will move on or if he will want to. Too early to say.
Availability is a big thing too. Heās shown now that he is banged up pretty frequently. There are several guys you can point to over the years across multiple sports that would have been good or even great but they just couldnāt stay healthy.
-
Bobby was a big time recruiter for this class. He was a great host and helped land some guys.
The math will be interesting. Definitely will lose Jalen, Gradey, Martin. Likely McCullar. Possibly Zach, Cuffe. -1 due to NCAA BS. Add McDowell, Jackson, Johnson. So thereās not going to be a ton of room. Maybe 3 spots at most? A starting caliber wing is a must get. Maybe 2 with McCullar gone. Weāre good at guard IMO. Then itās best player available. Iād love a one year rental scorer/shooter (wing/guard, doesnāt matter) to take the pressure off the newbies and to rebalance the scoring load.
-
How sure are we that McCullar will move on? Obviously heāll at least declare and go through the draft process again like he should, but if he doesnāt like his feedback (probably going to be the case), does he return since heād likely make more in NIL money than on a G-League or international contract? This is another area where NIL is a game changer, especially at a program like KU, where NIL deals can be pretty lucrative.

Good Point
-
Yeah been thinking the same on him. He hasnāt shown the offensive game to make it in the NBA. Returning another year would give him a shot to be a featured player
-
Itās time for Kevin to start his pro career. He is who he is, and that is a dude playing overseas.

I wouldnāt say itās ideal but another year gives you 10-14 pts ppg tons of rebounds, steals and headaches
-
Kevin is good glue guy and defender but if heās our main guy we are in trouble.

As long as he doesnāt get Jalen/Ochai volume of shots Iām fine with itā¦ begrudgingly.

I donāt have any doubts Self could find 2-3 wings in the portal if needed but Kev would be a solid returnee next year with KJ/Juan in the starting lineup.
We definitely donāt have a go-to guy on the roster right now for next season at guard/wing like weāve had (if Kev does leave). I know KJ has ascended but heās got no range and projecting him to become a shooter in one off-season is dreamland.
Iām basically saying Iām really concerned about next yearās roster and whoās going to be the guy that scores points. There just isnāt that option staring us in the face right now.

Oddly I had that concern about this yearās roster. Still do!
-
I was confident Jalen would score but at this level heās exceeded expectations. I definitely feel you regarding this current group still.
-
Jalen has shocked me this yr! Not counting last game.
-
Udeh is the go to guy next season book it

Iām trying to bite my tongue, but I seriously expect KJ to start at the 4 and Udeh at the 5. If we go land a stud in the portal, I reserve the right to change my mind. But if we donāt get just a guaranteed starter type in the portal I think Bill is sicko enough to do this.
-
@Kcmatt7 Thatās my thought as well. I do think KJ might be able to play some bully ball similar to Wilson on drives just without the shot to back it up. My secret hope is that KJ has a serviceable jumper that he just hasnāt shown yet. I know itās a long shot.

Yea since the days of Mitch Lightfoot weāve been hoping a big man could develop a shotā¦ I donāt think it is crazy to think KJ could stretch his range to the top of the key. But I also donāt see how his shooting is the liability some think it is. He is shooting 64% from 2 which would be one of the best in the country (sports-reference is down or Iād check exactly where he stands).
If Udeh approaches a similar efficiency on the block next season Iām pretty sure it will work, and work well.
-
He dunks a lot. Iād love to see his two point percentage on jump shots but I think those kind of stats are locked behind pay sites (or individual research which would take a lot of time). I really donāt like that pairing offensively.
-
Hoop Math has him at 49% on 2 pt jumpers. 72% on shots at the rim matching āhe dunks a lotā.
-

Not as bad as I thought. Though I imagine anything not a dunk/lay-up is classified as a jumper.
-
Crazy Wake has a guy shooting 89% from the field. 60-67 on the year. Wild
-
@BShark at the 4 hopefully after spending all summer working on his shot.

This is pretty good.
I also donāt think you can discount his ability to get to the rim. Heās a freak athlete so getting to the rim is something heās going to be able to do at the 4 or the 5.
-
UT is one of the best offenses in the country starting 3 players who basically wonāt take a 3. And Hunter is the 4th and he is a bad shooter.
It isnāt the death of KUās offense to play the 2 together.
-
I hope we are not revisiting this discussion in November as we score 60 points in a close win in our exhibition.
-
Yeah good point. Next year I expect him to be even more prolific in the paint. Dude should just live with a coach in the gym and figure out some post moves with his back to basket. Heās really just scratching the surface of what he could do with development.

Udehās development is huge for this year to have a deep tournament run and next season in general. Hope he keeps coming on!

Hunter has not been the BMOC we all thought he would be. They couldāve used Ramey the other night.
