@jayballer67 really Gradey being so much more than just a shooter makes us so good. He’s taking on both Och’s shooter role and Braun’s dunker energy guy role all in one player.

The 3 was unnecessary but I guess Cam has not seen the floor much during his time here so I can see why he made the shot.

Amazing how our 5-spot looks so good now that we are getting into a real offense. And for every play we run that finishes with a KJ dunk… he just gets that much more pumped up and kickin’ arse!
Yes… we look fast and a big part of that is fast ball movement!
This team learns fast and the sky is the limit this year with this team! Might end up being even better than last year’s team! Might…

That sucks I’m sorry to hear that. I was reading an IU board just now to confirm that information and surprised at how many IU fans want to get rid of Mike Woodson already

Depth is still an issue as we basically only went 7 deep in a game that wasn’t particularly close. Especially when the announcers were talking about Self developing the depth on the bench a bit and to not see it happen in a game that wasn’t particularly close is concerning. Rice should’ve played some more today, especially with Wilson struggling with his shooting today and it would’ve been nice to see Yesufu get some more minutes today as well. It looks like the back up 5 spot is still going to be by committee based on match ups.
This would be my one gripe from the game today as this was KU’s most complete game so far this season.

Actually I think we might play faster too. Plus this defense when it gets going can and just might get really nasty. - Kevin has become such a great fit on the defensive end and rebounding

Bobby and Zuby got a bunch of minutes today. 21 bench pts is a big improvement.

I thought McCullar looked really good today. He had a quiet Double/Double with 5 steals. Just kinda hiding in the background but he’s been an excellent addition.

That’s my point, Self only went 7 deep in a blowout game after he talked about needing to use more guys and having a perfect opportunity to get Rice some decent minutes in a game where Jalen Wilson struggled. Outside of the first few minutes of the second half, this game was basically never within 15 points, so why didn’t Rice and Yesufu get some minutes today? Only going 7 deep is going to catch up to KU later this season.

Keep attending. Maybe we can all chip in to see if we win by more if you sit closer to the floor.
And also so that you can relay suggestions from Buckets to Bill by yelling really loudly. He clearly needs our help.

Wow, that was a helluva balanced performance by the Jayhawks today. Very impressive.
Juan with the show boat assist! Making me eat my words. nice.
One complaint (sorry): Cmon, Bill. Play the bench more. We’re gonna need some of these guys at some point. I know 7 guys got 10+ minutes, but we need to season some of these players. We had plenty of margin to give them some run.

The circle of trust is not very big. I’m not even sure Joe is in it. Seems like the post situation will vary based on the opponent.

We needed to build the lead up as much as possible, and beat them as badly as we could. Our next 3 games should give us ample opportunity to expand our bench.
-
I’d argue 12 minutes for zuby all in extended runs with no quick hook is better than 6 for zuby and 6 for Udeh. Udeh got a lot of run early in the season and I imagine his time will come again.
But I like the idea of giving guys a good full run. Only thing keeping zuby from more minutes today was his own conditioning.
With the 5 posisiton what it is right now, KJ still needs as much time as possible to gel with the other four on the floor.
It’s easy to forget that 3 of the starters weren’t contributing to this team at all last year so them getting rolling and gelling with each other is as valuable if not more so than bench minutes for the second teamers.

For sure seems like the trust circle is not big.
Look at KJ’s confidence now. All comes from his time on the floor (well, practice helps too).

That lead was built up as it was over 15 most of the game. There wasn’t a great reason to not give Rice some extended minutes today against a quality opponent, especially with Jalen struggling like he did today. And I’m going to disagree about the next three games being ample opportunity to play the bench more because there’s only 1 more non-confernce game left before B12 play starts and OSU might be the worst team in the league, but how often do we see KU truly blow out and dominate B12 teams? Not as frequently as we’d like because of the familiarity these teams and coaches have with one another. And that 3rd game is a road game against a Texas Tech team that doesn’t have a bad loss this year and is probably going to be in the NCAA Tournament. So I don’t see KU getting to expand the bench much over the next 3 games, maybe Harvard, but I’m betting on it happening with OSU or Tech though.
-
@BShark can you tell me what the Liberty Bell guy did with Lance and our fb team at half time?
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 Maybe your sentence beginning “There wasn’t a great reason to not give Rice some extended minutes…” needs “that we know of” added to it. I know you know that Bill does a lot of decision making based on his perception of how well people have earned PT. Maybe some lack of effort in practice?
I have not been impressed by MJ in the limited amount I have seen. He hasn’t struck me as motivated, but that could be his injury.*

@mayjay You tagged the wrong person here.

I hear what you are saying… I think Self’s strategy is to iron out a really tough starting 5 before expanding much bench time.
All our guys had fresh legs today and it was important to run our starters for much of the 40.
KJ is now our big that has the most experience and I feel sure he is plugged into all our practice offense with the starting 5.
In just a few games we are seeing how much more he is contributing… and it isn’t that his personal skills have improved, but he is plugged into an offense. He now knows what he is supposed to do.
In most areas now, KJ is setting the expectation standard for the other bigs to learn from.
Just my opinion. I’m sure Self has his reasons!
-
I question more why MJ isn’t playing more.
Maybe he’s having a struggle keeping up in practice. He is still relatively new on the floor. Maybe he’s still not quite up to speed. Self mentioned he needs more PT!

I didn’t really bring up KJ because I didn’t have an issue there. My issue with the minutes today is Self didn’t back up his own comments about using the bench more today. Jalen Wilson was bad today so I don’t think he should’ve played 33 minutes today. Give the last 10 minutes of the game to Rice amd get him experience against a good team. That’s where my issue is with today’s game.
You also know as well as I do that Self’s bench doesn’t expand once B12 play starts, it contracts. With some of these games KU’s going to have, Self needs to have options. In about a month, KU is going to have a 14 day stretch of KSU in Manhattan, TCU, Baylor in Waco, Kentucky in Lexington, and the second KSU game. That is a stretch KU will need the bench to produce quality minutes, and 2 guys playing off the bench isn’t going to cut it during that stretch.

This is why I don’t understand why he didn’t play today with Jalen having a terrible game. This was a perfect low risk situation to get Rice extended minutes against a quality opponent.
-
I was surprised JWil got that many minutes when I saw him taking breathers during the game. For whatever reason, he didn’t seem to have as much energy as usual. A few times I saw him jog back on defense, even when the ball was ahead of him. I’m sure it will be brought up when they watch game film later… but I thought that would have been time to substitute him with MJ.
-
No way I would consider myself capable to coach a successful D1 team. There must be reasons for it all, including why MJ isn’t playing enough.
Perhaps Self is creating a situation where MJ wants PT more and more. Maybe it’s a motivational reason.
Or… thinking back to Self’s history… maybe MJ isn’t proving to him he has enough defense prowess to earn more PT minutes.
BTW: It is refreshing to see our defense taking shape! Kevin sure brings a lot to our defense, Juan is amazing… and now we are seeing some moments with Gradey… oh… almost forgot (how could I) KJ and JWil.
I just looked over the stat sheet and noticed Gradey had 5 steals!
Regardless of who plays our 5, if we can post trap effectively (like we did today), we should continue to shine on D! I can think of some National Championship teams that did it without a real 5… Villanova comes to mind first!

I really like this team this year at this time of the season better than last year’s team at this time. If that made any sense…lol. It’s just 5 unselfish guys giving everything they can on every play. I was amazed with 2 minutes left, with a 20 point lead, we have two guys on the floor fighting for the ball. The culture shows on the court. These are a tight group of guys.
Maybe the hesitation with MJ is perhaps he hasn’t fully bought in to the whole thing yet. How is a guy that debated G-League vs. KU holding up getting scrub minutes?
-
@Crimsonorblue22 not sure on your earlier question. I know there were some football players at the game that are not current KU players. So must have been recruits. Lots of Indiana fans! They were mostly nice.
-
Self mentioned that turnovers and defense were main issues for MJ. Must be seeing that in practice. He’s in the toughening box for sure.
-
Is right here. Self doesn’t trust the bench beyond Bobby right now. Joe, sometimes out of necessity. Zuby flashed big time and earns more chances with how he played. Beyond that it’s up to the players to play better in practice. Self usually has a good tune on who deserves to play.
I will say not playing Rice or Udeh when the game was well in hand was concerning.

Udeh is lost right now. Almost the 6’10’’ version of Cuffe. I do think he can eventually be really good but we knew he would be a project. We will have to play a back-up big in most games (Missouri was a fairly special case).

I too remember Jalen taking a possession off on defense; he didn’t run down court, he didn’t challenge the player with the ball but instead left the player to guard the corner. That reminds me of NBA-minded Andrew Wiggins, who seemed to glide through the first 30 minutes of the game, then got more aggressive at the end. Jalen wasn’t our dog Saturday and seemed content to just watch the game from the floor. I’m sure the big lead had a lot to do with his complacency.
-
@Jethro Zuby is the only big that has size and plays big. At this point I really want to see him develop more.
-
@nwhawkfan And it continued into the breaks on CBS all day during the other games. Sheesh. We weren’t even included in the last break where they showed highlights…not even a mention or even flashing the score.

For sure Udeh has displayed a lack of maturity on the floor a good portion of the time he has played. Flashes are great but his lows are unplayable so it’s a balancing act with him until he starts to get comfortable. I think a lot of the skills are there but he just hasn’t had the light switch go on upstairs yet.
Zuby is mature and has a few skills we need on the court now which is rebounding and defending the post at his size. He made it difficult without fouling on Jackson Davis and was in the right spot on all his buckets. If he did that more we are cooking
