@wissox It seems that you are inflaming your anger with "what-if"s that didn’t exist. 2008 didn’t happen that way. Our bb team isn’t doing that. So why get so exorcised about a fantasy disappointment?
Your rant is about 4 TOSU players cutting out of the Rose Bowl. I understand not liking that, but here’s something else to think about: With Omicron running amock, 4 bowls were cancelled. Hundreds of players lost their last chance to showcase their talents. Millions of dollars in tickets and concessions lost, vendors deprived of sales, sponsors blown out of exposure that was years in the planning… No one to blame, really, but a damn shame that few people even think about.
What, precisely, is lost because 4 guys don’t play? Do we know the team was butt-hurt? The game goes on. Four guys are prepping for a huge step in their careers. They miss the chance to be seen. The game goes on. Nothing else is threatened.
I love the irony of Desmond Howard criticizing them for disrespecting their teammates. He may have forgotten the flak his “Hesiman pose” received from people who thought he was showboating and disrespecting the team aspects of football. I didn’t care, myself. But arguably one of the most “me me me” moments in college fb history.

@Kcmatt7 I guess it reveals a mindset difference. If you think chase the bucks, fine, then let them. Again, leading voices in the sport are saying the same thing, so don’t give me ‘panties in a wad’ crap. I suppose during our big chance in 2008 in a rare BCS bowl game you would have been fine if Reesing or Meier or Briscoe had quit. That’s a shame and it would have been a horrendous slap in the face of the faithful fans who had stuck by the team so many years.
You literally got on here to rant. Almost the definition of having your panties wadded.
And my mindset isn’t to chase the money. It is that everyone should make their own decisions based on the information they have. You don’t know the situations that led players to make those decisions. Life is short and you shouldn’t feel that anyone owes you anything.
You can absolutely be disappointed if guys don’t play. But I’m definitely not going to be pissy about it because I am not in their shoes. I don’t know what making that decision is like. I don’t know their family or financial situation. We are talking about decisions involving generational wealth and life changing money for them AND those they love.
-
@mayjay Well I certainly know not to argue with a judge! But I’ll do it anyways The comparison with games cancelled for Covid is much different in my view.
What’s lost? OSU is getting killed. Imagine being an OSU fan who paid a bunch of money, maybe money that was a splurge to attend this game and then having four guys who apparently are great players decide to skip the game? I’d be pissed. Maybe me and Kirk and Desmond are the only ones mad about it. IDK. But like I told Matt it reveals a mindset difference. Loyalty to a school that helped get you to the NFL dream? Apparently that means nothing to guys who again in my view are self centered. Much more so than a posing Desmond Howard in a moment many view as an iconic moment in the games history.
-
Just saw the score. My reaction might be tinged by having attended Michigan…

Is it a breach of contract? You sign a LOI to lace em up for whomever and they give you 5 years of education in exchange for playing for them. Then you tell them, sorry, I don’t want to play for you anymore, even when it’s a big game.
@Crimsonorblue22 Simmons played his full season. I really don’t see why he’s evidence that I’m wrong. Breece Hall, another piece of evidence. I understand loyalty is no big deal.
@Kcmatt7 How am I risking their financial futures? I know injuries happen, but then why play any games? I really don’t get the push back on this. But somehow I’ve become the bad guy for suggesting a player should honor the commitment that people made to him and helped him get to the point that after today, they can go and chase their NFL dreams?
-
@wissox to me the mindset difference you are highlighting is which subset of people do you care about the most? You seem to favor the feelings and emotions of the fans. Those arguing against you are giving priority to the thoughts, feelings, and decisions of the players.
For me, you may very well be right that fans, commentators, donors, etc are upset by those young mens decisions. The players may have in fact just negatively impacted their future careers because there are undoubtedly people who think the same as you in positions of power in their futures.
BUT especially with football where every game has a negative impact on your future health, I’m going to in the end always fall on the side of the players. They are the ones risking their bodies, their futures, their careers with every decision they make on and off the field. If they are doing what they think is best than more power to them.

Ben Simmons didn’t play the whole season for LSU. LSU was in the NIT that season and Simmons noped out of that tournament to prep for the NBA.
Sorry, but unless a school makes the CFP, it’s common for schools to lose money on bowl games due to all the travel costs involved for housing players, the band, and cheerleaders in pretty nice hotels and not enough fans traveling to lower tier bowl games.
See Marcus Lattimore or Willis McGahee for why players will sit out bowl games I stead of risking injury. McGahee lost out in millions when his knee got destroyed in Miami’s Fiesta Bowl game against Ohio St. when he was a guaranteed top 5 pick in the 2003 draft prior to his injury. Marcus Lattimore never played an NFL snap because of all the injuries he suffered at South Carolina.

This OU KSU game is making me question the utility of eyesight
-
@wissox not sure if you’d already seen this. A players perspective:

Matt Corral is exhibit 1 about how opting out is smart. If he’s hurt enough to miss Draft prep that could be millions of dollars in lost earnings. I don’t love it but it’s clearly the smart decision.
-
It’s interesting to me that I’ve read several commentaries and seen tweets that seem to indicate it’s us old fuddy duddies that are mad about this and all the woke younger folks make silly memes telling us to stop yelling “stay off my lawn”.
I do think that ESPN is culpable. They’ve created a zillion ridiculous bowls and I don’t blame someone from leaving their 6-6 team playing on a blue field before Christmas for saying, yeah, sorry guys, I’m opting out. The age of the participation trophy has come to fruition. Most kids see through those stupid things. You all make some valid points but I think I do too.
-
@BeddieKU23 good catch on Ben Simmons. Forgot that was the case.
-
@wissox So, can I rest easy that since TOSU won and the B10 gets the Rose Bowl trophy, then those 4 players need not be hunted down, and the tar and feathers can be put away?
-
Yes! Quite a game out there.
-
@wissox Hey buddy…hope all is well! My response is I agree with you that players shouldn’t be opting out of bowl games, but then I get to thinking: last game of NFL regular season, the playoff teams bench their starters…in the NBA, a gazillion players take the night off for “rest”, MLB players get regular days off- some a ton of days off. Especially if they happen to be on my fantasy baseball roster. You’re going to say…“BUT, they didn’t quit on their team”. And you’d be right… in a way. They aren’t playing for all the marbles, though. If we start seeing teams in the playoffs begin to have guys checking out, then we will have a problem.
-
@Jethro The guys sitting in the NFL is a bit of a problem and it goes back to the fans who pay for tickets and then don’t get to see who they paid to see. I experienced this disappointment this MLB season as a 20 game package ticket holder. Show up and guys are getting rested. Larussa sat 2 or 3 guys one game. I really don’t know why MLB, or NBA players need rested. Like you play a game for 3-4 hours, do some warm ups, etc. What do you need to rest for? In MLB half of those hours you’re sitting on the bench waiting to walk up to the plate and run at most 360 feet!

And for another take:

Enaruna had a nice first half. We could have used him.
Yeah, I wasn’t pleased when Enaruna left.
-
@wissox players taking off for ten or 15 game stretches in the NBA while already getting paid and not even being injured, that I am not onboard with. I don’t fault college players who skip bowls, unless it’s the CFP. If were going to the NFL I wouldn’t play in the Mayo Bowl.

But Enaruna, the guy is balling. I’m glad to see it, just wish he would’ve been able to do it in Lawrence. Any word on Muscadin?
-
@mayjay What do you expect from a pro football site?

And ESPN talking heads are going to rail against skipping bowl games because ESPN owns most of the mid and lower tier bowl games that players tend to skip on. ESPN has their own agenda when they criticize players for skipping out on bowl games.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 True! But don’t get me started on ESPN and their own agenda.
-
I guess pro football players are quitting on their teams in the middle of games now. Antonio Brown left the field at half time shirtless today and quit. Something is wrong with that guy. I wonder if it’s CTE?

pathetically wrong, anyone else see that little episode ?
-
Johnny Davis putting on a show against Purdue tonight. Not sure it will offset officiating but he’s been amazing.

I would guess CTE is part of it, but I’m also guessing bipolar or something in that area of mental health issues as well.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 Yeah, he’s got some issues that are kind of scary. I guess until he got dinked in the head in 2017 he really had zero issues. I feel bad making fun of him.
-
Have a game, Johnny Davis

He supposedly had some issues going on before the Burfict hit based on what the people with the Steelers have said at the time.
-
What a win for the Badgers. All 3 Wisconsin bigs foul out but Johnny Davis scores 37. Amazing game. 3rd ranked Boilers are 1-2 in the BIG!
-
Tuesday 6PM, Kentucky v. LSU in Baton Rouge. LSU fav’d by 2. Nice opportunity to gain an overall win against Kentucky with their loss and a win against Okie St. Fingers crossed, etc.
-
@wissox that guy has been a clown car for a long time. His being not all there not even in question, at this point. You like that Badgers’ win did you?
-
LSU might be the best team in the country.
-
Defensively maybe

EHHHHHHHHHH , - -really not to sure about that. - -maybe I suppose but man I like Baylor. - like commentators have said , they might be better then LAST YEAR - - just loaded
-
@stoptheflop No one in Baton Rouge cares, 10 dollars will get you into the PMAC tonight against Kentucky. I didn’t like living there very much but opportunities to see games like that for a low cost were one reason.
-
Heard K/State only got 7 players for tonight’s game against Texas . Weber is in Covid protocol himself along with four players that play vital parts for them , the players in protocol are :Davion Bradford , Kaosi Ezeagu , Marquis Nowell , Trey Landers these guys play big parts fort them. - - the other three are Jordo Brooks , Maximus Edwards , & Trey Harris - - - Shane South Well will be the acting head Coach – look out.
-
@BeddieKU23 Kentucky not scoring against LSU.
-
Just read it’s going to be top two scorers in the country Thursday night in Madison when Iowa comes into town.
-
@jayballer67 - I see K-State is up at the half. 35-29. Surprising!
-
Oklahoma shot 68.2% in the first half and is losing by 9 to Baylor at halftime.
-
Plenty of empty seats at the Baylor game. I assume the students are still on break and Waco is pretty small, but who wouldn’t want to see the #1 ranked team play at home? It just doesn’t look good for Baylor or the Big 12.
-
Such a predictable flop for Baylor right when momentum was going OU way

Commentators can say what they will. No way in hell that Baylor is better this year than they were last.
