This afternoon Wisconsin blitzed UCLA with 19 3 pointers tying the BIG tournament record. They have the BIG reg season record from earlier this season when they made 21 against Iowa. So UW, the offensive juggarnaut now owns both major 3 point records in the Big 10. Greg Gard has completely changed the way he coaches and it’s really pretty fun to watch.
-
@wissox it would be nice if Self would do the same, I think he did in 2017 and 2018. I just wish we would make an attempt to guard the line.
-
I feel like if we didn’t run out of gas against Zona we would’ve spanked tech tonight with how short handed they were.

Correlation or causation that UW is much better this year minus its leading scorer from a year ago???
-
@kjayhawks Zona attempts to guard the 3. We still lose because of that philosophical difference
-
Wisconsin vs Mich St going to the wire. Reminder of what high level basketball between 2 teams with complete players looks like.
-
We just don’t have it this year. One AA who can score and board. We have a scorer who can hit from three. We have a forward who can defend. We have a point guard who can defend. We have a three player rotation who might somewhat score. Our 4 and 5 replacements are one and the same. They don’t really complement each other. Our favorite play is a soft lob to our center who has three defenders on him and because it’s not a secret. Everyone makes their share of turnovers especially when we get up by 7 points. Our best defense is when our opponents miss as many bunnies as we do. The referees are I’ll say iffy. We have a HOF coach who I guess they listen to. I think they are spooked by the possibility of the court getting rushed again. Since the new year I think we are the .500 team our results confirm. I don’t like it. I don’t like myself not liking it. So starting now I am embracing it with like in my heart. I like our chances in the next tourney of surviving. And advancing is optional. I’ll like it either way.
-
Dam I am sooo tired of Frannie, hopefully we can get a different color commentator next yr
-
@DCHawker Last year the bench at UW was pretty short so they had to lean on AJ. They really have some nice depth now. I’m really lucky to be a fan of them to take the sting off of another down KU season.
@kjayhawks UW’s calling card defense is no longer there with this newfound lets outscore them philosophy.
@approxinfinity It was an exhilerating game. High level play. Yes, hopefully KU gets back to that. It wasn’t that long ago that it felt like they were at that level beating MSU and Duke.
-
I’m a fan of Jayson Tatum. I’ll have the hardest time liking Zion because of the KU bull shiz around him. Is he even playing, or still hurt?
-
He may be a blithering idiot, but at least Jon Scheyer got this concept right that Bill Self got wrong:
Sheyer knew in order to make a deeper run this season, he would have to find the right players – not necessarily the most talented ones – to complement his superstar freshman.
“I feel my biggest job is roster construction,” Scheyer said after Duke’s win over Wake Forest earlier this month. "I think that’s always been the most important thing as a head coach in college basketball, but especially now.”
Btw the misspelled “Sheyer” was espn. Not me.
-
In Coach Self’s defense, he might know that’s his most important job as head coach and it just didn’t work out.
I say that because: 1) before the team had entered post-season play last year, he was talking about his thoughts on what he wanted for the team (more athletic, shooters, etc.), and 2) Scheyer may look uniquely good because Cooper Flagg is the kind of player that can mask weaknesses in your team roster.
-
Apropos of the discussions regarding roster construction, congrats to Eijiofor, Philon, Grant-Foster and Pettiford, who have helped lead their squads to the Big Dance…
-
Who does Pettiford play for?
-
@wissox High Point
-
Yesufu missed it by that much
-
DeVries out at West Virginia hoops after only one year, headed to Indiana
-
Anyone remember this name? Ali Farokmanesh hired as coach of Colorado St.

Never had anything against CSU before, now hope they go 0-30 every year.

Couldn’t have said it better

@Texas-Hawk-10 I suppose you were joking a bit but I admire the heck out of that guy for that shot!
-
@wissox yeah. Brass cajones, that shot. As a fan of basketball, you have to tip the hat. As I remember it, we werent horrible that day, and they didnt job us with bad calls, Northern Iowa executed brilliantly and earned the win.

I’m still very salty about that game because that was my last KU game as a student and that was a team that should’ve won a national championship even more than the 2011 team. That 2010 team only lost 2 games entering the NCAA Tournament and was an overwhelming favorite to win it.

Sherron and Tyshawn were terrible that game. Sherron was 4-15, including 0-6 from 3 for 10 points and 5 turnovers. Tyshawn was 0-5 from 3 and had 2 points.
-
UNI earned that win. We were intimidated by the pressure of the tourney and they were not. But there was some luck that factored into the outcome. They could not miss a three all game. A stat that has haunted me ever since was that their center, who had hit 1 career three before that game, went 2-3 from downtown against us.
-
Ha. You guys hung onto the sting longer? better? than I did. Thanks for reminding me. For some reason that one didnt stick with me because I expected it. Sherron has never been one my favorite Jayhawks. Mostly, I found his decision making maddening. Kind of the opposite of Juan. Hopeless drives to get packed at the rim, etc.

UNI was 9-26 from 3, KU was 6-23 from 3 with our star player going 0-6. If Sherron shoots his average (37%), KU wins that game and likely wins a national title.

That shot by Ali was crazy, bet his coach was like “Nooooooo , yes!” But that’s the shot you take in the underdog. If I’m not mistaken that was and still is the highest rated 9 seed since KenPom started. They had zero business being anything worse than a 6. If I remember correctly they were ranked 23rd in the country going into the tournament. We got a favorable draw in 2022 but we have been hosed a lot. I read an article last season how KU has faced the highest rated KenPom team in just about every seed 9-16.
-
Maybe winning it all in 08 made it sting less in my mind just like this year and 22 still fresh in the memory. Zona in 97, Syracuse in 03 and Michigan in 13 feel a lot worse in my mind.

That 97 team is IMO the best team to not win a Natty in CBB history. Roy Williams has always said that’s the best team he ever coached. Crazy how some of that works out because I think you could argue that the two or three of best Kansas teams in my lifetime didn’t win it.
-
@wissox I’m still mad at Purdue for 1994. lol. Nearly every season ending loss stings. This year not so much.
-
@kjayhawks The injury to Jerrod Hasse was unknown to me until just recently in a podcast and it took away his deadly 3 ball for that game.
It’d require a lot of knowledge to say which was the best team to not win it all. One that comes to mind is Houston in 83 when Guy Lewis committed coaching malpractice by going into a stall to blow a comfortable lead to Clyde Drexler, Hakeem Olajuwan, etc. A college team with future Hall of Famers should win a natty and couldn’t pull it off a year later either.
-
@wissox oh for sure the greatest KU team to never win it is highly debatable as it is when you include everyone.
-
@kjayhawks No the highly debatable part you said I thought you were referring to all of college hoops. I think the 97 KU team is the best KU team ever. 85 could be argued for that title as well. That team beat national champ Louisville twice during the regular season. Never ranked worse than 9th
All of NCAA history, I just don’t know enough about the 40’s-70’s to make a best to not win declaration.

This year stings a lot to me because I thought we had a really good path to the EE had we played well and together. We may not get as favorable as draw as we did this season for another 5 or 10 years.
-
@kjayhawks eh. This season is quickly fading into the rearview for me, like a cloud of dust at a graveside service.
I very much want to see a roster we can be geeked about for next year to take shape quickly, at least the big pieces.
Last year can RIP
-
@kjayhawks That very well might be true but I think our 2020 team deserves that title, even if there were other teams with more dominant or better regular seasons in the discussion. The reason being that every other great team not to win a title failed on their own in the tournament. That 2020 team, on the other hand, was unfairly stripped of a chance to play for a title.

Yes this for sure makes the 2020 team the hardest pill to swallow.
-
@kjayhawks Oh I forgot about that one. Probably because it didn’t end with a difficult loss. I’ve often wondered if that team is allowed to play, and assuming they won, does that make it easier for guys like Och to go pro earlier and make 2022 less likely?
-
@wissox ha, yeah the seldom seen other side of the “its very hard to win it all” coin.
Very unlikely we would have won it all, and also, butterfly effect.
-
Lets go Vols!
