We have far less than most other programs fwiw. We really do need to add a couple spots imo. Namely someone to focus on fund raising and then someone to pound portal tape.

I know coach Q’s son had some form of cancer, not sure he’s of age to retire. I think he’s beat it. I’d guess Norm next. Wonder if we’re bringing Frank in?

And make no mistake, the opportunity to work for Bill and At KU will be HIGHLY sought after. Like sitting head coaches would peace out to take the job. I do expect Mike Boynton to make a short list tho

One guy I’d love to see on staff is Anthony Grant but I don’t think there’s a world where he doesn’t retire a Flyer

Even the head coach at say umkc isn’t giving up his HC job to come sit on staff under Bill unless he was fired
Every guy wants to run his own program not be some assistant at a big name program

Unless we learn to guard the 3 and also shoot more 3’s no gm will fix this

@kuballin10 it’s a trend in the industry. Google is your friend. It’s further along in football where G5 HCs are taking P4 coordinator gigs

I know Saban takes fired/failed hc’s and brings them in then sends them back on their way
But guys just quitting hc jobs without being fired to demote themselves to working for Self isn’t a thing

There are former Jayhawks who have coached in the D League and elsewhere… Aaron Miles… Right? Just curious if that kind of candidate would be considered.

I was asked for examples of head coaches who left for assistant jobs. These are all really good football coaches, just tired of the head coaching grind at the G5 level, which the exception of Chip.

Oats issued zero punishment for a star player, Brandon Miller, who provided the gun used by a teammate to murder a woman. Shades of Dave Bliss and Baylor there.
Golden was accused of sending nude videos of himself, harassment, and stalking a female student at Florida. He was cleared after an investigation, but there’s controversy around that as well based on how the investigation was handled in regards to Golden’s right to privacy being violated by the group conducting the Title IX investigation. One of Golden’s assistants is also under a Title IX investigation for inappropriately grabbing a female staffer.

Know Golden being cleared doesn’t mean there wasn’t something going on, but even assuming everything he was accused of is true, it still falls short of being on the same level of chocking your spouse.
IMO Oats is a few tiers above Golden who is a tier above Beard.

Simply put, yes. The Oats situation involved a person losing their life. The Golden situation is the first step to a Penn St. or Michigan St. situation and Golden not holding Taurean Green accountable for groping an employee is very telling of his character and what he’d allow to happen.

Doesn’t seem to stop universities from giving them multi-million-dollar salaries & making them some of the highest paid state employees. Where are their morals.

He was just selfish in not wanting to sit his star player and hold him accountable. IDK how that is anywhere close to being comparable to direct involvement of a crime and doing so kind of minimizes the severity of Beard’s domestic assault.
I still think Beard’s is worse but can see how you could reason Golden’s is comparable so won’t argue with you there.

@MR11 he very easily could have put his program in serious jeopardy with his morally ambiguous actions. It’s a risky hire at the least.

I dont see the the Charlotte Hornets having a problem with paying Brandon Miller. Why do we expect college coaches to be held to a higher moral standard when we measure their success in Ws and Ls?
I know I’m passing the buck here, and yes, that doesnt mean he has to be our coach.
I think Self has been on board with recruiting several questionable athletes. Glad we never had a situation where a star player supplied a murder weapon right before the tournament.

If scruples don’t matter - Will Wade is a candidate. Just recruiting violations that are now legal if I’m not mistaken. Time served - I’m ok with this one.
Dream candidate is still a near zero chance Brad Stevens.

@FarmerJayhawk many a failed head coach (for a multitude of reasons - performance to stress) makes a great assistant. Spags comes to mind. Nagy not so much. I liked Brad Childress and Doc Sadler better as assistants than head coaches despite any success. Too many to name. You’re correct.

@dylans I agree that its not great and maybe I’m being pedantic but I would likely stop going to/watching KU games with Beard as the head coach. I don’t think the same would be true for me if they hired Oats.

I remember the Hornets catching a fair bit of flak for drafting Miller at the time.
We hold coaches to a higher moral standard because they are the public faces of universities and can have a major impact on other areas of a campus such as enrollment.
If a coach is willing to overlook, or play favorites when it comes to discipline, what else are they keeping in check within the program that could eventually blow up? Do we really want a coach who would be willing to turn a program into the 2008 Florida Gators (football) to win some extra games?
Self absolutely will take chances on players and that’s fine, that’s not the issue here. The issue and difference between Self and Oats is what happens to a player who makes a bad choice? We know Self has no issues removing problematic players from the program as we’ve seen countless times in the past, even if it negatively affects the on court product. Nate Oats doesn’t appear to be that coach and has me wondering what other skeletons might be in his coaching closet that he’s done nothing about?

@MR11 What if the events in question had happened while coaching at KU? I’d have been for holding them accountable and letting them go. Then you live with the aftermath. I’d like to pass on all of that if possible.

It’s the biggest I believe unless I’ve forgot another one. This one is staring us in the face and we have only 2 potential starters on the roster right now. I know we can fret over Coit and Jackson potentially starting but ideally neither is asked to do so.

With very few returning players I hope a nucleus of young talent is brought together that will carry the “Jayhawk way” forward for the next several years. Unfortunately it will more likely be a bunch of free agent hires.
While watching double A basketball (it’s more like AA baseball than the ncaa) beats the other minor leagues - Euro and G league, it’s not what it used to be. For better or worse.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Peterson leading with the young returnees + Coit who seemed like a positive culture veteran. He wasn’t here last offseason and will get a chance to lead by example as the veteran in the room. I’m actually optimistic that aspect of the team will be improved with the guys who are moving on. Now if we get a bunch of Storr/Griffen types in the portal that could obviously erode my optimism, but I think we’ll see better there.

I’m looking at all these big, strong guards with multiple skill sets in the tournament, and Coit just doesn’t measure up.
sure, he can hit a streaky 3, but c’mon man.
We can’t settle for guys like Coit and hope to succeed on any level moving forward.

Couldn’t agree more. It’s why I’m beating the drum on every outlet I can that we need a talent upgrade just as much as we needed a roster reset. They aren’t talented/good enough and with all of coach’s resources that’s on him and his staff.
