2023 Transfer Portal

  • Jalen was somewhat mediocre as an offensive hub, at least in terms of KU level. Love him forever, awesome Jayhawk, but it’s true.

On the first part, I might just say not very efficient rather than mediocre - just sounds a bit harsh - but do agree on the second part.

Yeah maybe a bit harsh, but he was not efficient. It’s fine though, he did what was needed.

And while he wasn’t an efficient scorer or really create for others, he WAS efficient on the boards…

  • @DCHawker Can never question his EFFORT.

  • @DCHawker said in 2023 Transfer Portal:

I asked this question of @BShark previously, but will pose it again a slightly different way. Are we missing out on guys already in and who have committed? Waiting for some we think will enter but haven’t yet? Yes, there were some later entrants last year, but is there any chatter about guys yet to come in who are better than the 1400 who have already entered? Or is it something else? Ingram is a solid player. But, he isn’t better than JWill and probably not Kevin. Timberlake is a solid player, but not better than Gradey. As yet, I don’t see how we can make up the 45 point slack through the portal?

It’s likely that we have a worse starting 5, but a much stronger bench in 23-24. At least, that’s the way I’m seeing it play out.

Though Cuffe and the forfeited Scholly are throwing a wrench in that.

  • Really hinges on getting a DUDE at the 5 IMO. Messing with lineups and whatnot, adding a scoring big like Hunter or Holmes makes the whole thing work so much better. Allows very, very good connector pieces like Ingram and Juan to do their thing, and opens the floor. Going to have to hope for a frosh or two to come in and ball out.

  • @FarmerJayhawk Elmarko will cook I think. I think the next tier of big would be fine as well. Boone, Edwards etc

  • I worry about Edwards on defense. Transitioning from that trash heap summer league zone to Bill’s complicated man scheme would be tough. Hope he’s got the IQ to pull it off if that is indeed the direction we end up going.

  • I think like others have said believe it or not I think the success of this portal Season depends a lot on the quality of a 5 we can get to commit. If you can get a quality guy that opposing D ha to respect and really man up on him, then opens sooo many other options. They have to respect 5 spots opens things up for our guards to do more things.

KJ works his ass off but yet he isn’t really any kind of threat out past 7-8 foot consistency wise anyways. I f you can get a big that can stretch the floor some as well as post down low then your good. - -You notice most 5’s in modern day basketball do stretch the floor - -more mobile - - that would be Hunter - he has multiple ways to score - he post down low if they double down on him then opens up open looks for the wings/guards. - -if he comes out - - then opens driving lanes - I think our success of the portal depends on if and who we can get for the 5

  • Ok so I’m going to revise my portal wish list - -yet again - -I know , I know just call me Mr Wishy Washy - -so here it is updated lol – Again :

So how about if we could land Hunter - --Timberlake - - -& Ingram ? - - would that work – be ok ? - I could go for that.

Read about Brandon : Starting in-home this week 1st wave will be Friday: - -Baylor - - Carolina - - & Texas A& M. - The towards the beginning of next week Harrison visits KU. The article says that KU - & N Carolina are the two to keep an eye on. Harrison has really not given any date on commitment but should be a fairly quick process he says

  • @jayballer67 if you’d offer me that I’d take it right now and shut it down for the offseason. Even though Ingram and Timberlake aren’t at the top of my board individually, that’s a team that will find ways to score and has defensive potential.

  • Lord help me - - I’m so old , and have that all timers lol - -I can’t even get the kids name right lol. - Is it Brandon Ingram OR Harrison lmao. - - I wrote Harrison & then was on Kentucky Boards and they say Brandon - so which is it guys - -just ol absent minded guy here lol - -Sorry guys - someone get it right for me , but you know who I mean lol

  • Keshad Johnson in the portal from San Diego St. Athletic 4 man that you know can defend.

  • @jayballer67 Think fight club. They have no name until they sign. His name is Robert Paulson.

  • @dylans said in 2023 Transfer Portal:

    Right lol

  • FWIW, Mike Vernon seems to think Dickinson is expected to visit sometime toward the end of next week, after five-star Harrison Ingram’s visit to Lawrence earlier in the week. Dickinson is also expected to visit Maryland and Georgetown.

  • Next week is gonna be fun

  • Storr from St. Johns to Wisconsin. Someone said he was a KU target while in HS.

  • TJ Bamba to Villanova…

  • Another good player - comitted

  • Edwards to WVU. Rest of the conference is reloading in the portal. Some good gets so far…

  • @DCHawker said in 2023 Transfer Portal:

DAMMIT, well there goes plan B

  • Nothing against Edwards, but he’s really not a bill self kind of big man. It’ll be interesting to see if Huggy can toughen him up

  • Old friend Tre White in the portal from USC.

  • Don’t know if this got posted elsewhere, but MJ Rice ended up at NC State.

  • JalenTyson from TTU in. Arguably their best 2-way player. McCullar 2.0???

  • Wondering if there is, and if there isn’t, why not, a thread about Marcus Adams signing the other day? Having seen any chatter.

  • So, USC’s Tre White has entered the portal. Previously a high school verbal commitment to KU. 6’7" wing; averaged 9 pts per game. If KU misses on other wings, like Ingram should KU pursue?

  • @stoptheflop

Bossi definitely made it sound like they wouldn’t circle back to someone they basically told to find another place… He is talented though

  • With these others Schools getting involved now , Kentucky , Arkansas , Villanova visits upcoming think it’s become obvious that Hunter is playing the NIL bidding war. Who is going to pay the most for my one yr. I know from an article I think it was Bossi wrote some time back that even though Kentucky and Arkansas had been mentioned but not likely Hunters landing spot -stating Ku , Marylan & G Town were the front runners. - -Now here comes Kentucky - - hence the NIL bidding war

Was on the Rupp boards and I guess Calipari flew to Michigan Tuesday and met with Hunter , Hunter saying they talked for like to hours , & Hunter stated Kentucky really , really wants me which inside means - - how much you willing to put out to prove you want me.

Some Kentucky fans mentioned and I didn’t really know but I guess Hunter has a little bit I am full of myself attitude - -a center of attention type guy sometimes just kinda of wrong type of attitude and they saying hope that wouldn’t flare up there… - I don’ really get it thought they already have the possibility of Oscar coming back - - They have Ugonna Kingsley returning & they have highly rated 7"2 Aaron Bradshaw coming in - kind why they neve or haven’t recently anyways done alot. - - Got all this talent and they have talent on top of talent sitting the bench - -not enough basketballs – makes ya think with that type of recruiting cancers in the lockerroom disruptin team chemistry. - -I stil myself think he ends at Maryland but who knows for sure.

I would say he isn’t the most explosive athlete in the world. And he doesn’t really play like a 6’7 Jalen Wilson or Kevin McCullar where they do a lot of other things really well.

I wouldn’t be upset with KU if they took him, but I would get why they would pass on him.

  • KU let him go the first time so that ship has saaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiled.

  • Saw where Hunters Plane didnt get here till latte last night

  • Well Well. -Damian Collins from Kentucky just entered the portal

He is driving up his price.

  • @Jethro I’m beginning to get more curious what the actual annual NIL budget for KU is. As long as it’s unregulated go hog wild as one of the big boys. I do wish there would be some sort of “salary cap” or some better solution to promote equity.

We need a T Boone Pickens clone for KU. I don’t want equity unless we’re losing.

  • Like I said NIL has just turnd this into a bidding war. I get that the kids possibly need some kind of income – but this is Bull shit. you get that kind of money , then just by pass college and take your shot at G league - -B leauge - P league I don’t give a crap league and stay the hell out of the College game

  • What difference does it make now that payments to obtain players are: a) much higher, b) known rather than just suspected, and c) made by many schools rather than the elites?

Is the quality of basketball lower if NIL helps bring in veterans?

Does a player who doesn’t have to scrape by corrupt his program?

Much pearl clutching, but I don’t see the problem about knowing players are finally able to get paid for their work.

We have some billionaires. Yes plural. One was up in Lawrence the other day right before the Hunter visit. I won’t name him out of respect that I was asked not too. But he was a big one to get on board…

Nothing has really changed other than perception. Some people don’t like knowing how sausage is made, they just want to eat sausage.

Yeah he is pretty wealthy. Loves KU too.

  • @BShark I think that NIL and the transfer portal created a much more level playing field for everyone. Sure, it is chaos. Sure recruiting your own guys to stay feels insane sometimes. But now KU/Duke/UNC/UK can’t just hoard talent the same way they always have. Where the 12th guy on their bench starts at 99% of other schools in the country. Now you have to find a way to keep that guy from leaving you to go start for ECU, Cleveland State, New Mexico, Boise State, etc.

The portal and NIL allowed Miami to get their first ever FF and their first two Elite Eights. SDSU’s leading scorer was a Cal transfer. Their #2 scorer was a transfer from Seattle. 4th scorer from TCU. Literally the starting 5 of KSU were transfers at some point.

Teams who legitimately could not compete in a world where transfers had to sit out, and they didn’t have the favor of shoe companies to land talent could not truly compete. This is SOOOO much more of a balanced system than it was before.

  • @Kcmatt7 Well said, this all goes both ways.

Oh btw, old fling alert Yohan Traore just ended up at UC Santa Barbara. Ultimately, guys are going to end up at the level they belong at a lot more now too.
