When Remy makes it back...

  • @BShark agree. He’s better on a bad team. Needs the ball in his hands. Still I think he could come in in certain situations and help the team, I just don’t know if he is prepared to play that role

  • Remy isn’t going to play another second for KU, imo.

From here on it is all a PR campaign. Bill doesn’t want to play him (for a lot of reasons), but doesn’t want to get burned recruiting. Remy needs Bill to say that Remy was a great kid/teamate/player that just had some bad luck.

I could be wrong, but that is what I’m seeing right now.

  • Remy can be a much needed weapon when our offense is struggling. He can create for himself and get to the bucket. The weird part is that we rarely have seen it. Is it Remy trying to fit in or Self holding him back? I think he’ll be back. Just like most of us didn’t know Bobby or Zach would sneak into a game, Remy will too.

  • Remy can provide the bench scoring this team needs. Our bench scored 8 total points the last 2 games. Remy can be the scoring punch the bench needs.

  • If Remy steps on the floor again for KU I don’t think it will b until the NCAA’S. - -I don’t necessarily think Bill hs a thing against Remy , I think he is truly hurt. If I remember right I read somewhere else they thought if Remy Made it back it would be the NCAA’S

I think Joe & Juan can co exhist with one another on the floor. Plus Jalen handles the ball fairly well can bring it up .I think alot of it is this has been a difficult change of style for Remy , Befor he was almost asked to do it all - -pretty much - -here not needed as much KU has enough others where Remy doesn’t need to be THE STUD ROLE. - I don’t kow if Remy is struggling with that or the injury is worse then people realize OR maybe a little of both

  • I think Remy comes in and helps our offense move. When he is healthy, his drives open up the floor for Och, CB, and Jalen. Now, that doesn’t mean he would play much, but I think it would be great if he could come in and win a game or two in the tournament for us.

  • It will be experimental when he returns. The chemistry on this team has been changing. When he last received big minutes Jalen wasn’t stepping up yet (and with big minutes), Dajuan wasn’t scoring, Joe wasn’t giving us energy minutes, and Dave wasn’t as settled. It is starting to feel like a different team, and to be honest… I am starting to like what I see! Just wish our D would do better.

I still think there is a possibility Remy could help. As @Texas-Hawk-10 said… we need more bench presence. Especially if we want any kind of run in March. Remy was starting to contribute more on D when he left, too. He was getting some steals, cutting into passing lanes, and starting to put on more on-ball pressure.

Remy’s speed and energy is needed!

Controlling tempo is our ticket to a long March ride. I feel it is even more important than Dave playing well (a close second). Tempo is our biggest help on defense, too!

  • I’m gonna go out on a limb and say Remy will win us a game or two we shouldn’t by providing a big spark and taking games over

  • @FarmerJayhawk said in When Remy makes it back...:

This seems like such an obvious limb based on his reputation coming in but we’ve seen none of that here.

Could be a situation like Conner frankamp got in the tournament when no one could score. Self put him out there and said chuck it. That’s the only way I see him getting meaningful minutes from here on out and if that’s the case we are already in trouble.

  • Remy dreams die hard. I’m at phase 3 of the KUbler- Ross 5 stages of grief- I’m at the bargaining phase.

I don’t think Self has been holding him back. Self has said publicly he would like Remy to be more aggressive on offense. Feedback from the NBA was he needs to show them he can defend and run a team (distribute), not just score based on volume. So that’s what he’s been trying to do.

I don’t think he will start again if our current starting 5 remain healthy, but he certainly could be a boost off the bench. Our team will be better when he is available.

Only a limb because I think the most likely outcome is he’s shut it down for the year and Self and Remy are just saving face right now.

  • KU needs to Remy to come back. Bobby is hurt and should not be playing and Joe is not a PG. They need someone to be able to come in and give Juan a rest. There is no way Juan should play 37-39 MPG. Remy can score and this team desperately needs someone on the bench who can do that.

I’m not convinced he is going to come back, but I am still holding out hope. At least for another week or so.

  • @Woodrow Agree about Juan’s minutes and I think Self would rather avoid that too. Remy won’t play again for KU though.

  • @Woodrow

I think several of our starters could use a slight cut in minutes. Och definitely is looking frayed…

We need every advantage going into March because our margin for victory is quite small.

  • Will Remy have to return the Camry??

  • @BeddieKU23 is that why he’s sitting the bench?

Yeah Och in particular. It’s a damned if you do damned if you don’t. Bill tried against Okie Lite and we struggled.

  • We are just an imperfect team.

When you are an imperfect team you have to figure out which strategy you want to adopt. You can either press the pedal down and try for the highest seed in the tournament you possibly can to give you the best path. Or you can take your foot off the gas, let your guys heal/rest, and then accept that the tournament is chaos. But chaos that you can go into with a healthy team vs. lingering issues.

Bill always chooses the former over the latter.

    Yep.

They need to just shut Bobby down btw. Expect him to have surgery after the season but they should get it out of the way now and accept only having 2 small guards available.

  • @BShark That is scary. Means that Juan will have to continue to play for 38 minutes plus. Don’t think HCBS trusts Joe to run the offense for other than a couple of minutes. Have to hope Juan doesn’t get into foul trouble in any game, or worse, injured. He is definitely going to be worn down if neither Remy or Bobby are available.

  • @BShark exactly which injury will require surgery?

  • Watching KU/OSU II highlights. Half 1 El Kabongs Och-1 The Dave-2 Rev Braun-1

Half 1 Paying Brick Layer Union dues Zach-2

    Thanking you in advance.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 said in When Remy makes it back...:

Groin issue that got worse, idk all the details just that he will need surgery.

  • With the rescheduling of the TCU game they have a really condensed schedule at the end of the year going into the Big 12 tournament. I’m afraid they are just simply going to wear out down the stretch.

Self is going to have to play Joe and Zach more minutes.

  • Anyone think that HCBS might just sit Juan for all or most of one of the 2 TCU games - probably the first on the road? Maybe just semi-concede a game - at least give Joe full run at lead guard and see how the chips fall?

  • There were a lot of Oh hell Yeah moments in the OSU game and Zach had 2 that were hard to beat. #1 The (2nd half) block steal was damn nifty and even more nifty was the loose ball in the FT circle he dove for and just tapped over to Yesyou who fed Bad Bad Leroy Braun for another El Kabong.

I’m saying nah but it’s very intriguing. Lot to like about Joe including his ability to get open looks and his cojoenes.

Yea, agreed. No way Self sits or rests anybody who’s healthy, ever. Sadly it was very clear in the OSU game that Joe cannot lead the offense. He just dribbled around lost when playing PG. that’s ok. The world needs shooting guards too. But we sure could use a backup PG!

Back to Remy… Unless he’s just physically unable, he’ll be back. He can help this team. What other layers have we ditched midseason? I can’t remember the timeline with LaGerald Vick…

Update: Sounds like when JCL is available again, they might officially shut Bobby down. But either way he is emergency only.

  • @BShark I hope he works on his jumpshot. He looked very good the beginning of the year…

  • @Jethro said in When Remy makes it back...:

Yeah I’m sure he will work on that this summer along with other stuff after he heals. Bobby and Zach are more or less expected to be faces of the program going forward @FarmerJayhawk alluded to this earlier as well.

I think the idea is to just give him a couple minutes so he knows he is being thought of, even now. The open transfer portal makes it necessary to show some symbolic moves here.

If that kid can put on some muscle he’s going to be a real force! Strength is easier to add than basketball IQ and people don’t realize what he has to offer this team in the future. Nifty footwork, IQ, perimeter shot. We aren’t used to having players like him going 6’10"!

I think there’s Drew Timmie potential with him. At minimum a more athletic Dedrick Lawson

  • Does anyone know the rules for medical hardship? Is this the path Remy is trying to go? Whether it be another year here or portalled to another team? It just seems weird he wouldn’t be trying like heck to audition his talent for this last year in college. Most guys would be wrapping that leg and eating Advil and Tylenol like breakfast cereal to get on the court.

  • OK, here’s what google says…

To qualify for a Division I Medical Hardship Waiver:

    • The athlete can’t have participated in more than 30% of the number of games or dates of competition in their sport.
    • The athlete also must not appear in a contest after the midpoint of the season.
    • The athlete must have contemporaneous documentation from a medical professional that their injury or illness prevents them from being able to continue participating in their season.

  • @Zabudda i would like to see joe get a couple games to play through all mistakes and show us what he can do from end to end.

Are you comfortable losing two games that could have been wins and possibly the league championship?

  • @benshawks08 ummm our super bowl might be the league this year so maybe not this year 🙂

  • I think Joe continues to get valuable minutes. Remy is still a ways off or not returning. Self mentioned resting Dajuan and Och more. This definitely needs to happen before March.

We still need to iron out tempo. Some games we bring it… other games we don’t, and when we don’t control tempo, we struggle to put teams away.

  • Self is already resting guys. They had 2 days off after the game Monday. Began game prep for WVU yesterday. Game Saturday then 3 days til KSU at home, then another 3 til the big one at Baylor. The last week of the regular season is a cluster due to the TCU situation back in January. Will be interesting to see how that week is managed

  • @BeddieKU23 If they have the B12 locked up after the 1st TCU win, he should give Joe, JCL, KJ and Zach 30 minutes the 2nd one. He won’t, but he should.

  • @drgnslayr said in When Remy makes it back...:

Self also said without Remy, it’s hard to rest Harris because Yesufu’s not a point guard (Self’s own words and said multiple times during Hawk Talk this week) and Pettiford can only play a short amount because of his abdominal injury so Self has been stuck having to play Harris 38+ minutes because there’s not another healthy PG on the active roster right now. At least that was the gist of Self’s comments on Hawk Talk this week.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10

Makes me think Harris’ PT minutes might mean more than Och’s. We did win without Och, showing how other’s can step up when they have to.

What are your thoughts there? Which player’s minutes are most important at this time?

  • @drgnslayr Best and most important player are not always the same person. Ochai is definitely KU’s best player, but I’d argue he’s probably only the third most important player for KU behind Harris and McCormack. Harris is by far KU’s most important player because he makes everything run on offense. McCormack is more important to me because when he’s on, like he is now, it opens up the offense more.
