Iona Game Thread

  • Decent. Left with a w

  • Nice inside game today. Kept the turnovers to single digits too.

Yesufu making a pretty good argument for more playing time.

  • A win is Good for the plane ride home 🤭

    #RockChalk ❤💙

  • I don’t know what you can do about Remy not being good on the defensive end, other than out score teams with him on the floor

  • Who is sticking around for the dayton game??

  • What are we ranked Monday?

  • 7th or 8th?

  • Yeah I was assuming 7th, but it was a bad loss and Iona wasn’t a good win (yet) so maybe lower

  • Back to NYC next Friday for St. John’s.

    RCJH !

  • Taking a break to start dinner

  • It takes me until January to get over an early season loss. Jeez, a couple more FTs was all it would have taken.

  • Mitch took more shots than Remy.

  • @approxinfinity Iona did beat Alabama

  • @RockChalkinTexas I don’t think they’ll be that happy

  • Coach Self is NOT happy. Talking about how our defense is trash baasically. - He brought up one time where one of the guys flopped acting to ty to get charge - -we ALL know he was talking about there ( Remy ) - -which in turn the guy knocked down the 3. - -Got to get Alot better defensively

Purdue will be # 1. - Both UCLA & Gonzaga lost - Purdue was 3rd. I to am thinking probably 7-8 th for us

They was talking about other teams going at Remy - posting him up , not the biggest guard in the world - on top not very good defensively

23 more shots, 16 more rebounds and half the turnovers. How are we only up 15???

    by not playing any defense

  • Been impressed/pleased with Christan’s play so far. - -Especially this weekend , more aggressive

I think we settle in that range, end up a 2 or 3 seed for the tournament.

Yeah - they gave up 52 points to Iona in the 2nd half. The Gaels shot something like 60% in the 2nd half. Also got to the FT frequently by attacking the basket.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out why 20 year olds can’t play with intensity for 40 minutes - actually more like 15-30 with the depth on this roster. Huggy can get his guys to do it…

How has that worked out for him in the long run, compared to say, HCBS (whom your comment implies cannot do it)?

  • I’m not sure why people are surprised this team still isn’t that good defensively this season. 4 of 5 starters from last year are back from a bad defensive and Remy Martin who is an average defender on his best day replaced a DPOY in Marcus Garrett.

This isn’t a team that’s going to win many games because of defense this season. This is a team that will have to outscore teams on most nights. This is why Self is trying to get Dave going because we know he can be a reliable scorer and give zero KU a fourth guy capable of getting 15 a night. Self does also need to let Remy be Remy because his scoring and driving ability is what can really open up the offense for everyone else.

  • Agree this will be a below average defensive team all year.

  • Well, a win’s a win I guess. Should have been a 30pt win, but I’ll take it. I’m thinking the weird rotations and floor combinations were to blame today for some of the lapses. I noticed one odd lineup when we lost some ground. Is Self just trying guys out before he gets stingy with minutes? On the surface, I’m not minding any of the guys on the floor, but maybe not have wholesale changes at once? I dunno. (I still love KJ!)

In no way am I implying that Huggins is a better coach than Self. The records speak for themselves. Just that some on the thread have passed off the defensive lapses and letting lesser teams stay close in games that should be easy wins by saying that it is too difficult to maintain intensity for the entire games. If you have a very short bench and guys have to play 35 minutes or more, then you would expect some pacing. But, if you have a deep bench and trust those guys to perform for 10-15 minutes, then the starters should be able to go hard for 25-30 and not take plays off. That’s all…

  • @jayballer67

The defense is bad right now. But Self went on to blame himself for messing around with lineups and creating out of rhythm situations. Still its totally an effort thing as a group.

  • @rockchalkjayhawk

Self mentioned post game he needs to do a better job subbing and I think we could all agree that the lineups have lacked rhyme or reason. We all want to see the newcomers but it seems clear certain guys have to be on the floor a majority of the time.

Bit of both for sure. Like @Texas-Hawk-10 said the pieces just aren’t very good for defense either. This will be a team that wins on offense.

Oh yeah that’s a really good point as well. We just lack the horses on defense collectively.

I’m okay with this being a Top 5 offense all year especially after last years debacle on that end.

We know Bill is gonna Bill when it comes to preaching D but his ticket to a good season is getting the 7-9 guys dialed in on offense and hoping the success on that end translates to better effort on D. And that kind of fits the mentality of a lot of our guys. Agbaji, CB, Remy, Dave all play better when they score.

  • @approxinfinity said in Iona Game Thread:

I think Mitch can do all the things we expect from Dave. Rim runner that rebounds, plays positional defense and doesn’t cough up the ball or play plodding back to the basket offense, passes willingly.

Was late watching the game but this comment stood out to me looking through the game thread. To me, Mitch scores the points that Bill draws up. He is in the right spots, makes the right cuts, and finishes when the play call gives him the free look at the basket. Like the box score might as well give all those points to Bill. And I think that makes Bill happy. He’s not going to do a lot of scoring outside of those sets. I think he had one bucket where he actually made a move and then scored. But he also doesn’t TRY to make a move and score every time. I mean, dude got to double digits in back up minutes just by knowing the system. I wish others would see that and learn from it. Bill can make the game so easy for big guys but some of them seem to make it so hard.

Could definitely hear Self early in the second half say “get him out of there” after watching Dave fail to grab 3-4 rebounds in a row that went right to him. Hard to say what to do about that. Hard to say how to help a guy make easy layups when the set lays them out on a platter. Hard to say what to do about Dave in general. He showed at the end of the year last year he can be an impact player. But hard to say how long you give him to get back to that level this year.

  • I still think we can play better D! A lot of our O came off of steals, fast breaks. No matter how big Dave kills me, we need him to get back to where he was. He was an 80% plus FT shooter last yr. I think it’s all mental. It’s certainly not for lack of effort. Not sure about jalen? Off court problems, nba concerns? Hopefully rust. Not me ball!

  • They’ll get the D sorted out. Always feels like Bill needs to see how best to pull those strings and by conference play we’re elite defensively. We are a Kenpom top 5 offense even while playing Harris 27 mpg. Last year’s defense finished 12th on Kenpom and we returned almost everyone and have a better bench. Bill will get that sorted out.

Honestly we’ve only played shitty in the 2nd half of two games. Otherwise this team has been as advertised. Once Bill sprinkles his magic fairy dust on the defense I think we will start to see some impressive wins. I’m definitely a little sour from this tournament, but overall we are still a top 5 team.
