A Fifth Year for Doke?

  • I think the players on this team will be remembered with their own legacy. With everyone talking about “The Forgotten Team,” the ironic result of having a unique season will be that they are mentioned forever.

  • @Jhawk69

You have to make the case that his return will be more valuable to his stock than the risk of injury and loss of a year’s income at the next level.

There is the outside chance he doesn’t feel ready for the move. He is quite young and a foreign player, still adapting to life in America. Another small chance he wants to come back to get something done here (national championship).

There is definitely room on the roster for Doke to return and start but I sure don’t think it is likely.

Doke’s stock is as high as it will get. Best case scenario for his stock next season is it stays the same, but next year is supposed to be a much deeper draft class than this year so realistically is Doke’s stock probably goes down next season even if he repeats what he did this year.

Doke is at best a situational match up guy in the NBA. With his limited shooting range, he’s going to run into defenders that are as strong or stronger than Doke that can take that part of his game away. There’s a reason why Thomas Robinson and Cole Aldrich couldn’t stock in the NBA and Doke is in the same boat as those two. Big men with limited offensive skill sets.

I would not be surprised if Bill and the staff hang the jerseys some where in the Fieldhouse of “The Forgotten Team” they should be recognized

    Love this. Well said.

  • @truehawk93

    “Scissors and Nylons”

That’s phenomenal. You should make that your signature or tag line, whatever its called.

  • This team needs a 30 for 30

  • In the 2019-20 college basketball season, many said there was no “dominant team.” However, let’s take a closer look at that.

    • One team finished the season ranked #1.
    • That team was the only team unanimously voted #1, all season.
    • That same team had the strongest SOR and was #1 by every ranking system except NET (#2).
    • The same team won their conference regular season and won every road game.
    • They won the Maui Classic and defeated the team that finished the season ranked #3 in the country in the finals.
    • Their record was 27-3, and the three losses were by a combined 15 points. Their average margin of victory was greater than 15 points.
    • They were anchored by an All-American center that finished his career with the highest FG% in NCAA history.
    • They had the best record against quadrant 1 teams (12-3) and highest Q score (2.67) in the country.

That sounds pretty dominant to me.

And that team finished the Season winning 16 games in a row

  • Nice – 3rd longest winning streak in the country I think. (Dayton: 20 and NMSU: 19)

One correction: That same team had the strongest SOR (not SOS) and was #1 by every ranking except NET (where it was #2)

Addition: Best record against the quadrant 1 teams (12-3) and highest Q score (2.67) in the country.

  • Plus the best damned mascot in the business!

  • @bskeet 37-3! Love it!

  • @mayjay is it damn or damned?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 According to my damned google instant answer, either is a damn fine usage!

  • I don’t want our mascot to be damned!🤣

  • @wissox said in A Fifth Year for Doke?:

Ooops! Just 27-3 Argh! Maybe a freudian slip…

  • When ESPN and others say there was no dominant team this year, I guess they mean there wasn’t an ACC, SEC or Big East team at the top.

  • @bskeet

Not counting the Maui win vs Chaminade?

  • @bskeet DO IT. Print the banner. Engrave the Trophy. I agree with all of your points - and I said a while back that if we were healthy (meaning not injured) there wasn’t one single team out there that could beat us.

  • I don’t like watered down championships. Neither of our recent champions would have won a “declared champion” tournament. Let’s just gracefully accept that it took a global crisis to stop college basketball, and while we can trumpet our rankings superiority, let’s not invite conversations about how KU has done in the past as the overall #1 seed!

I don’t want any pretending crap decorating our rafters. Is the need to scream “We’re #1!” that strong?

  • @mayjay The NCAA tournament gets it wrong many years. It’s a single elimination crap shoot, but that’s what makes the tournament exciting. I can’t remember a a bad team that winning, but I can point to many that were not necessarily the best. They just crown a tournament champion; the regular season champs should be just as celebrated imho…but never will be (Sans winning the tournament)because the last impression left is a loss.

  • @dylans That is a very strange thing to say: “gets it wrong”? No, not at all. The tournament crowns the NCAA champion. That is its only purpose. People who think that it is supposed to reveal anything except the winner should just never watch it and not let UA, UNI, and VCU ruin their impression. Get rid of the tournament, and go back to polls.

I agree that the tourney has crazy results, except for 2008, when it was only crazy in the F4 because we were the 4th #1 but won.

But the results are valid, not wrong. “Who can win 6 (or 7!) pressure win-or-go-home games in a row?” is just as valid a test for greatness as season long results.

  • @mayjay Single elimination crapshoot. I’m not sure why I should take your advice and not watch. It’s still exciting. Actually I think you are dead wrong on that.

  • @dylans Only saying that “gets it wrong” means you don’t think the result is valid, which makes no sense. I think we agree that the uncertainty is the best part, even if it has shortened my expected cardiac warranty by a few years!

  • What about the nba having suspended the season for now and who thinks that the nba will even need players next year?

  • The 1988 National Champs were probably not the best team although we did have the best player. I remember that team well…

  • This team won its last game in a Kansas uniform. Not many teams can say that!

Well said, and Thank you! My new Favorite all-time Jayhawk team.

  • The N CAA just announced that they are not going to let Winter sports get another year

  • This team is probably going to have an interesting legacy. Doke will likely qualify to have his jersey retired, as I can’t imagine he won’t be a consensus first team All American, and may be national player of the year. Dotson might have a trickier path, but he could hit the same marks to qualify for the rafters.

As a team, this squad will always have a weird legacy. The season ended so abruptly that there was no way to put it into context. If KU starts another conference title streak, this team will be remembered for starting it (and going 17-1 to do so).

If all of those things happen, I think history looks on this year’s squad very kindly.

Consensus #1 ranked team in the final poll. Two consensus All Americans. National Player of the Year. Re-started the conference title streak by going 17-1. In some ways, not having the tournament is going to make for a great documentary someday, not just of how the season ended from a national perspective, but you can’t start the national title discussion without addressing KU.

  • @justanotherfan does D player of the year qualify for the rafters? I hope so!

I think it would be nice if they could do something. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Hey, if the NCAA voids our last 2 seasons, cutting the streak to 13, we should just proudly tell the world that we have this year just continued the streak. Based on a theory that if the NCAA wants to just vacate seasons as if they never existed, then we didn’t lose in those seasons.

“Looking really hard for silver linings” is my new motto!

  • @mayjay always!

  • What all counts towards consensus 1st team all America? I thought Dok was named 2nd team on Sporting news or one of those all America teams while Dot was 1st team there.

  • Ok , everyone in favor of ONE more year from Devon = = PLEASE stand up now lol - -just kidding but would sure be nice lol - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Not even BS’ing, the lack of pre-draft process might push him back. It’s not likely or even probably he comes back, but it’s a lot more likely now than a month ago.

Well ,you just never no. Like you I’m just kind of messing but hey couldn’t hurt to wish . In reality has he improved his outside shot enough for that transition ? - -Has he taken better care of the ball ? less to’s/loose ? - -I remember those were two things the information he was told he needed to work on.

Yeah, doesn’t hurt a thing to imagine! He’s still not a great shooter or passer. I don’t know if he can really do a lot else to improve in college but I think his choice is go cash checks or be an all time great in college. I don’t know for sure what he’ll do but it’s a harder choice now than a couple weeks ago.

  • @FarmerJayhawk I remember what he tweeted out when he made is return official. Something to the effect of unfinished business. Well he’s got more unfinished business from this year than last. But it’s a dream. He gains nothing of having another year of college. Go make money while you can.

I can’t disagree. All about how much he values winning in college.

  • @FarmerJayhawk I’d love to have him back too, but it’s in - atleast monetarily - his best interest to go pro.

ya. I think you and I both have a pretty good idea. I mean selfish ya would love him back , but in reality - - - plus another thing or possibly that will way, like was said he mentioned about unfinished business. - -If anything for this upcoming year I think would work against us is, I think we will get a post season ban for the upcoming year so in that respect think that would lay against his return because he STILL wouldn’t be able to change that unfinished business. - -maybe if we put ur heads together then we can wish hard enough lol

  • @dylans If I recall correctly, consensus All American used to be recognized as a player named AA in at least 3 of 4 of the AP and UPI wire service polls, Sporting News, and some other group (forget which).

Now that there are a lot more AA teams, it is more of an assessment of whether a player is named to several of them. It has been expanded by some sources to include anyone named even 2nd and 3rd team.

I personally think it is like saying an A-minus student is a 4.0 student because he got all "A"s. I think the term All-American should reflect someone recognized as being one of the top five players, i.e., first team only, and “consensus” meaning by at least X number of analysts (I would say 3).
