A Fifth Year for Doke?

Azubuike has missed well over a year of games throughout his career. He easily has a case to apply for a fifth year of eligibility, even if the NCAA doesn’t do the right thing and give an extra year to everyone. Do you guys think Doke would be willing to do this? And if he does would the NCAA turn him down?

There’s no reason for Doke to come back. His stock is as high as it will be. It’s time for him to go make some money.

This young man is done in a KU Jersey as he should be. No reason for his return at this point with him being projected late first round/ early second. Doke actually snapped me back this afternoon and said thanks for the kind words and he loves all of us in the Jayhawk Nation. We love ya too brother!

This is not the kind of basketball history I wanted KU to make this year. I was hoping to see scissors and nylons.

The thing with Doke now is for NBA scouts to determine whether they’ve seen enough. They will make him go through tryouts, if they have them, and then determine if he’s NBA ready or talent enough. We all know he has the size and strength. The dude has paid his dues. He’s done his part. He should be in the top 10 of the first round. It would be an insult to make him do anymore work. Damn, the kid has worked his azz off and proven himself time and time again. This virus is NOT his fault.

Doke is eligible for a medical redshirt for either his freshman or junior seasons, but because of his NBA draft stock, there’s zero chance Self would even tell Doke to come back at this point.

Doke has become one of my favorite all-time Jayhawks. A McDonald’s All-American who rather than crying or questioning buckled down to get his degree, got into the best shape of his life and played his ass off. Would the selfish me want him to come back, hell yeah the selfish me would. But how would that benefit his draft stock? He needs to go to the NBA, ditto Dotson.

Dotson is the most talented point guard Bill has ever had and he has zero legacy. No defining moment other than losing the conference streak as the starting pg. His only tournament experience was an early exit (Lawsons no defense fault) and that’s all he gets. Unfortunately his name will be tied to a metric crap ton of disappointment that isn’t his fault, but will be the reason he becomes a repressed memory.
I hate this for Dotson. He seems like a great guy and one hell of a player.

I think the players on this team will be remembered with their own legacy. With everyone talking about “The Forgotten Team,” the ironic result of having a unique season will be that they are mentioned forever.

You have to make the case that his return will be more valuable to his stock than the risk of injury and loss of a year’s income at the next level.
There is the outside chance he doesn’t feel ready for the move. He is quite young and a foreign player, still adapting to life in America. Another small chance he wants to come back to get something done here (national championship).
There is definitely room on the roster for Doke to return and start but I sure don’t think it is likely.

Doke’s stock is as high as it will get. Best case scenario for his stock next season is it stays the same, but next year is supposed to be a much deeper draft class than this year so realistically is Doke’s stock probably goes down next season even if he repeats what he did this year.
Doke is at best a situational match up guy in the NBA. With his limited shooting range, he’s going to run into defenders that are as strong or stronger than Doke that can take that part of his game away. There’s a reason why Thomas Robinson and Cole Aldrich couldn’t stock in the NBA and Doke is in the same boat as those two. Big men with limited offensive skill sets.

- That team was the only team unanimously voted #1, all season.
- That same team had the strongest SOR and was #1 by every ranking system except NET (#2).
- The same team won their conference regular season and won every road game.
- They won the Maui Classic and defeated the team that finished the season ranked #3 in the country in the finals.
- Their record was 27-3, and the three losses were by a combined 15 points. Their average margin of victory was greater than 15 points.
- They were anchored by an All-American center that finished his career with the highest FG% in NCAA history.
- They had the best record against quadrant 1 teams (12-3) and highest Q score (2.67) in the country.
That sounds pretty dominant to me.

Nice – 3rd longest winning streak in the country I think. (Dayton: 20 and NMSU: 19)

When ESPN and others say there was no dominant team this year, I guess they mean there wasn’t an ACC, SEC or Big East team at the top.

I don’t like watered down championships. Neither of our recent champions would have won a “declared champion” tournament. Let’s just gracefully accept that it took a global crisis to stop college basketball, and while we can trumpet our rankings superiority, let’s not invite conversations about how KU has done in the past as the overall #1 seed!
I don’t want any pretending crap decorating our rafters. Is the need to scream “We’re #1!” that strong?

@mayjay The NCAA tournament gets it wrong many years. It’s a single elimination crap shoot, but that’s what makes the tournament exciting. I can’t remember a a bad team that winning, but I can point to many that were not necessarily the best. They just crown a tournament champion; the regular season champs should be just as celebrated imho…but never will be (Sans winning the tournament)because the last impression left is a loss.

@dylans That is a very strange thing to say: “gets it wrong”? No, not at all. The tournament crowns the NCAA champion. That is its only purpose. People who think that it is supposed to reveal anything except the winner should just never watch it and not let UA, UNI, and VCU ruin their impression. Get rid of the tournament, and go back to polls.
I agree that the tourney has crazy results, except for 2008, when it was only crazy in the F4 because we were the 4th #1 but won.
But the results are valid, not wrong. “Who can win 6 (or 7!) pressure win-or-go-home games in a row?” is just as valid a test for greatness as season long results.

The N CAA just announced that they are not going to let Winter sports get another year

This team is probably going to have an interesting legacy. Doke will likely qualify to have his jersey retired, as I can’t imagine he won’t be a consensus first team All American, and may be national player of the year. Dotson might have a trickier path, but he could hit the same marks to qualify for the rafters.
As a team, this squad will always have a weird legacy. The season ended so abruptly that there was no way to put it into context. If KU starts another conference title streak, this team will be remembered for starting it (and going 17-1 to do so).
If all of those things happen, I think history looks on this year’s squad very kindly.
Consensus #1 ranked team in the final poll. Two consensus All Americans. National Player of the Year. Re-started the conference title streak by going 17-1. In some ways, not having the tournament is going to make for a great documentary someday, not just of how the season ended from a national perspective, but you can’t start the national title discussion without addressing KU.
