Fixing College Basketball

  • Defensive three seconds and remove the ability for secondary defenders to draw charges.

Like you stole my brain and posted this

  • No 3 second calls they’re too disruptive. Just electrify the paint after 3 seconds. That would be fun to watch.

  • @dylans OR - put in trap doors!

  • @nuleafjhawk Astros inspired body buzzer/zappers!

  • I don’t like a defensive 3 seconds in college basketball because it would essentially outlaw most zone defenses. I like the scheme variety in the college game. Ok with the latter suggestion though. I’d also support shortening the shot clock to 25-27 and going to quarters to eliminate the 1 and 1.

  • Could we go back to using peach baskets?

I would allow all of this, absolutely.

  • Elam Ending! End of story.

  • One time transfer rule making the rounds… oh boy

    Yesssss

  • As for rule changes, some of us are old enough to remember life before the 3-point shot. Take that away and you’d find a lot of guys having to learn how to hit 10-15 foot jumpers. That skill is virtually lost nowadays. Not necessarily advocating this, but you’d develop more pure shooters, not just long-range bombers. This could be done in conjunction with shortening the shot clock.

I’d keep the dunk if only for the showmanship. I always thought that the ban ('67 thru '76) was an anti-Alcindor rule after he used it with such devastating effect, much like when the NCAA widened the key due to Wilt’s dominance.

  • Fix the tournament selection. So many bad teams on the bubble or in this yr.

  • I like the idea of changing to quarters to help keep the game moving without 1 and 1’s. Hate the idea of shortening the shot clock. It part of the reason I despise the NBA, too short of a clock to run good offense. One on one or pick and roll sums up 90% of NBA offenses. I like the game how it is for the most part.

I love this. I can’t stand players drawing charges by getting in a spot at the last millisecond without even making a basketball move. You do that in a pick-up game they won’t let you play again. Bush league.

Defensive 3 seconds. Love it. Allow guards to drive more. The more space, the better. Before MJ put on muscle he was at his acrobatic peak. It was beautiful. Then the Pistons beat him up with what Jaybate used to call…I forget…Duke’s play…extreme basketball? Something along those lines? At any rate, MJ had to get stronger to play a more physical game, but his most impressive highlights came earlier in his career.

  • ALSO, free throws should be optional, at least in the last few minutes. Free throws were meant to reward the victim, not the perp. You can accept or decline in football, why not in basketball? And when people are clearly committing a foul to stop the clock, shouldn’t that be discouraged as well, at least in the last few minutes? Right now the last few minutes are so often unwatchable. Sure, occasionally it makes it more exciting, but usually not.

  • I’m also not crazy about being able to pound a ball off an opponent when you’re falling out of bounds. Again, taking advantage of a rule, but not a basketball play. Requires smarts, for sure. But it’s not basketball. It’s dodge ball. Although I can live with that rule. It’s the others that are more aggravating to watch.

  • @chriz yep. And maybe reset shot clock to truly penalize the team trying to foul and lengthen the game. But then again, there was that Memphis thing in 2008…:-)

  • My wish list:

Actual Jumpballs again. The alternate possession has taken away an actual skill and plays that great coaches can take advantage of. The beginning of each quarter should be a jump ball.

    Defensive 3 seconds

In NBA I want the corner 3 gone. The 3 point line should just extend to the sidelines. I’m not sure I’d do this in college just yet.

  • @chriz Love this idea. You have the option to keep the ball or shoot free throws on anything besides an And 1.

  • @BeddieKU23 Every team in the tournament should have to finish in the top half of their conference.

That would give us a max P5 group of 32 teams.

Make it the regular season champion for all conference automatic bids.

I don’t like this one. I just don’t think you should be able to hide a players’ weaknesses this blatantly.

You shouldn’t be able to win in a fluke way after getting your ass kicked for 38 minutes either.

My idea is actually a foul in the last two minutes in the double bonus is one free throw and the ball back. Take away the incentive to foul at the end of the game.

  • @Kcmatt7 That “fluke way” is basically what March Madness markets.

  • @Kcmatt7 Maybe run 5 seconds off on a defensive foul with under 2 minutes left. I hate how you play basketball for 38 minutes and then a free throw contest determines the game.

  • We want more basketball. Fouling, by definition, is not basketball. Penalties are meant to discourage fouls.

  • I may be in the minority here, but I’d like to see the refs keep bigs from backing down their defender. Again, to me, it comes down to basketball. Think Hakeem with the dream shake vs. Shaq with the bulldozer. It’s just more beautiful to watch when players have to rely on their skill vs. their weight.

  • @chriz I didn’t mind hand checking. I miss hardened players and brutal defense. Some of this freedom of movement stuff goes too far. But it is what it is and Bill has finally figured out how to coach defense for the first time since the rule change.

  • @dylans What do you think he’s done differently besides having Marcus Garrett? (Not saying he hasn’t done anything, just curious your thoughts.)

I noticed Baylor last night was doing what I wish KU would’ve done against Iowa State. They basically just didn’t allow the 3-point shot or the dunk but weren’t AS concerned about anything in between.

  • @chriz He’s directing traffic to one side of the court instead of allowing the offense to dictate direction. Self took this from Beard. Oh and having Dok and Garrett is the biggest reason.

  • @BigBad said in Fixing College Basketball:

You can still have good exciting games that don’t come down to a free throw shooting contest.

Are you telling me you enjoy watching a team down 10 fouling for two minutes and stretching the game out for 30 minutes? That’s enjoyable to you?

  • @Kcmatt7 Not saying it’s enjoyable but it is proven to keep games close if you can’t close it out at the line.

Also called the “ice” the ball screen. The defensive principles of this type of scheme have definitely worked with this group.

    Sure it’s a fine strategy.

But it is the rules that allow such a travesty to the game.

  • Yeah, I see intentional fouling as more of a loophole than a part of the game. Of course I see the “improve your free-throw shooting” angle. And yes, it CAN make the game more exciting at the end. And yes, we most likely wouldn’t have had the title in '08 if we couldn’t foul. Although I remember it working against us as well (e.g. against Michigan several years ago in the Sweet 16).

At the end of the day, rules aren’t meant to encourage fouling. Especially when it’s meant to stop the clock and trade 2s for 3s. So the loophole needs to be closed.
