MILES IS NEW COACH

  • @kjayhawks He said that JUCOs were for emergency gap fills.

Basically laid out his plan like this (at least how I understood it):

    • Recruit in 500 mile radius.
    • Any positions not landed in said radius, look for in Texas, Louisiana and California.
    • Any starting positions missing after that, fill with JUCO kids. Maybe a couple a year. Not double digit numbers.

  • kjayhawks said:

So is it doable for Miles to sneak in a couple of 4 star guys in 2019 class? We only have 14 slots available if they are okay with keeping Mueller on. I’m a little scared with how he said the Juco level was great kansas to get help quick. I have no doubt that he is light years smarter than Weis or Beaty but that is scary with how that was a big factor in current scholarship numbers. Several former Miles players have came out and spoke very highly of him including Odell Beckham JR and Lenard Fournette. I think that could help in getting on some recruits radars.

Mangino went very heavy on JuCo recruiting at the beginning of his tenure. Most of the starters on that 2003 bowl team came from the JuCo ranks. Not quite as many, but a lot of starters on the 2005 bowl team were also JuCo players. It wasn’t until the 2004 and 2005 classes where Mangino started scaling back on JuCo recruiting.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 Right and I’m not saying it can’t work but I doubt MM had the lack of numbers we currently do when he started.

  • Do we still have the coach with Louisiana ties, Hull I think his name is?

  • @wissox I think people mentioned the desire to retain only Hull, of our existing assistants, on Miles’ staff.

  • I am going to give some respect to this year’s coaching staff for taking a large, smoking heap of ash four years ago and getting it to this point. That is not easy.

Sure, we need a new staff to build on this and take it to a championship level. But Beaty, Bowen and co. did something positive for the program after several predecessors left it in ruins.

Also-- the way they have handled this situation is respectable. They have been professional and continued to do their job. They haven’t quit and they haven’t let the team quit.

  • @bskeet This them is vastly improved from year one and even a year ago. They have lacked the discipline to finish games. The big issue with Beaty outside of not finishing games is, he has not helped the Scholarship numbers in anyway. If we get a few guys that transfer out, the numbers will be less than he started with. He used way to many grey/blue shirts like with Fontana, Wallace and Feder this season. A grey/blue shirt is a transfer that counts against the next years class. He also pushed some talented guys out that weren’t playing that have moved on and are doing great. He only has 11 of his original class that had 25 players in it, only one of which is to the NFL.

  • The biggest challenge for Les Miles is to take control of the NE Kansas/NW Missouri area from a recruiting standpoint. The stretch between Warrensburg and Topeka, anchored by Kansas City, stretching north to St. Joseph and south to Ottawa or so doesn’t produce talent like DFW, Harris County (Houston) or Dade County (Miami), but it’s a starting point.

I think Miles has some ideas up his sleeve, and he has more credibility than anyone that has coached at KU, KSU or Mizzou probably ever, so he has a chance to move KU immediately to the top of the heap with local recruiting. That may not pay off with the class of 2019, but it should start paying off in 2020.

  • @justanotherfan I think its there for the taking at this point. KSU seems to be going in the opposite direction of KU and Mizzou hasn’t really done a whole heck of a lot recently. Kansas must start getting the talent in Kansas and Missouri.

@FarmerJayhawk That’s the only way to do it. Pooka to the left…Pooka to the right … shorten the game. Do the football version of the 4 corners. It might be a little ugly, but the wins will be really nice.

Pooka can’t carry it 30+ times per game all season. They need either multiple backs or some other threats, otherwise Pooka will be hurt five games into the season.

Right, and he won’t. RB is the deepest part of the roster now, assuming Herbert and Dom come back.

I’m just shell shocked. Might have to go into the bomb shelter? KU getting serious about Football. Is the sky falling? Has the rapture taken place and I missed out? Did I wake up into some alter universe?

  • @DoubleDD I’m excited for KU football again. It’s the first time in many years.

Well can’t swear to this - - – BUT - - just read a piece , couldn’t read it all cause it was VIP- -but the tid bit sounds really encourgaging.

This already relating with Les :it’s about the 4 star recruit right here in Kansas -his name is Turner Corcoran , stated he might be the best player in the state of Kansas - -well we have seen in the past how things work out with in state big time recruits , they usually bolt for out of state Schools - -or to K-State right?

Well he stated: - -he Really is charged about Miles – really likes him - & hoping that KU Coordinator is able to be retained at KU. - Don’t know about you but sure sounds like A huge plus with Miles coming in and keeping Tony

  • @jayballer73

He’s being recruited by Ohio State and Nebraska among others. He’s from Free State in Lawrence.

  • @jayballer73 Corcoran is a 2020 recruit. He’s an offensive lineman so he’s probably referring to AJ Rickers the OLine coach.

With progress Rickers has made with the OLine this year, I wouldn’t be opposed to keeping him as well.

  • Miles is the poster child for rebuilds. He will make an immediate impact, like a tidal wave. He’s at his best when he’s fixing broken toys. This reminds me of the Larry Brown hire. Tidal wave.

  • @DoubleDD I’ve read your post several times and it still makes me chuckle.

  • @approxinfinity When Larry Brown was named coach, we almost couldn’t believe it. To go from Ted Owens to Larry was almost unreal, almost like going from David Beaty to Les Miles.

  • @KUSTEVE

…and he left KU on probation…like UCLA before and SMU afterwards. Brown is a great basketball mind and coach but as a program manager he is toxic; let’s hope Miles is not anything like him in this respect.

Miles doesn’t have that history like Brown does/did.

In fact, Miles has not just been a good coach - he has been a program builder. Oklahoma State would not be where they are today without Miles’ tenure.

LSU had as good a period of sustained success under Miles as anyone, including Nick Saban.

I don’t know whether he can do that at KU, but he’s as well suited as anyone to try. The question, more than anything else, is how long his KU tenure will be. I believe he will be successful, but can he train a KU version of Mike Gundy over the next 5-7 years while he rebuilds the program? Gundy took what Miles built at OSU and has taken the Cowboys to a bowl in every season but his first, has six double digit win seasons and has even won a conference title. That level of success at KU would be a dream come true to be sure. If Miles builds a foundation that leads to that, his hire will have been an absolute home run.

  • @KUSTEVE I believe it! I’m excited. I haven’t endured as much suffering as the longstanding diehard Kansas football fans, but I watched a good deal since 2007. This is going to be really fun!

  • @JayHawkFanToo I don’t think you read my post- you just saw the name Larry Brown, and started swinging. My point was the excitement generated by a new coaching hire rivals when Larry was hired. I assume you would set aside your Brown bashing to simply acknowledge that KU fans were very excited when Larry Brown was hired as coach.

  • @KUSTEVE

It was a big improvement over Owens but cautious based on his time at UCLA. Disappointed in him for leaving KU on probation and very disappointed more recently when I found out the real extent of the violation and KU was a whisker away from getting the death penalty…it was a hell of a lot more than just one plane ticket as originally reported. I have posted before that I would prefer there is zero association with him. You will notice he was advising Silvio’s guardians and look what happened. IMHO, Brown is radioactive.

  • @justanotherfan I think Miles is better suited as a builder, like he was at OSU, than a sustainer, like he was at LSU. He used to punk OU, and got the Okie state believing in OSU football again . He’ll be a natural underdog, and love every second of it. At LSU, you lose 3 games in a year, and your job is on the line. Here, if all he loses is 3 games, he’ll be a hero. At first I thought he might rebuild us, and then take off. But the more I look at the situation, he might just thrive here, and not want to leave. No pressure, and he gets to be the hero again. This is a generational hire, which should turn the entire program around.

  • ok Question. - - off the phog , they had a thread running that asking people - - what they though next years opening attendance would be for our 1st game. - -almost to the person said we would sell out. – So let’s hear from here - - -what do you think? - -I have to agree with the sell out , or if not I’m looking at 50,000 anyways - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer73 Supposedly season ticket holds are already calling in to renew and several former members of the Williams fund are looking to get back in from what I’ve seen and heard. Our attendance will be the highest its been since at least 2010 next season.

  • @JayHawkFanToo You haven’t dissuaded me into not remembering how excited everyone was when Larry was hired. Which was my point. What Larry did after he was hired is completely irrelevant to the point I was making. Whether you love Larry, or hate Larry, he changed our entire program in 5 years that has lasted 35+ years. No doubt, it is much easier to look back 35 years, and conclude we could’ve hired this guy or that guy, and not had the baggage that Larry carried around. But that is not what happened. Whether you like it or not, Larry saved our program. Our basketball team was in worse shape than the current football team, based on expectations, when Larry came aboard. No doubt, our 1 year of probation in the last 36 years represents a stain. But to wipe Larry out of our history, and pretend he didn’t have a tremendous positive impact in ways that still help our program even today, is a re-write of history I’m not willing to make.

Exactly what I’m hearing my friend. - -I mean buddy I know has been proven on the field yet , nd I’ll say this again , I really like Beaty - -I know his love is geninue for KU , it’s just he was in over his head, and I truly hope he succeeds wherever he lands.

But buddy can you feel it? - -can’t you just feel the buzz ? - the excitement in the air again? - It is really hard for me to try and check my excitement in check. What a feeling it will be to come to the Stadium and see all the Crimson and Blue -can you feel it? – Were Alive. - In reality if he can get a couple of 4 star even high 3 for the coming season - I feel we are truly made our 1st step to recovery.

I’ve already gotten the permission from the wife to come back - -and AGAIN become a voice at the stadium lol – dam dude I just about wet myself when I think about it. - -If we could sway what was his name that 4 * QB that had committed to us? Maybe get a few to change their minds - - I’m ready buddy-- Are You ? - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @KUSTEVE

Chill out. I simply stated that I hope Les does not leave KU on probation like Brown did. I really made no comment on how excited any one was or was not.

Our basketball team was in worse shape than the current football team, based on expectations, when Larry came aboard.

If you really think that is the case, I want whatever is that you are drinking.

KU was not an elite programs when Brown came in but it still was a pretty good program; the football programs is the worst of all P5 programs without a doubt… Brown won a very unlikely title but Williams and Self are the ones that made KU Elite once again. Like I said, Brown has an amazing basketball mind and is a great coach but, based on his track record, I prefer he is not associated with the KU program, I guess we just agree to disagree.

  • boy already seeing signs since Les came on board. -saw where a 4 star Wide receiver has always like Les Miles name Chris Hightower - -a 3 star line backer is interested looks like - then like I mentioned Turner Corcoran - -talking about things. - -Not saying we going to land these guys when the time comes but ALREADY seeing interested from players – you got to feel good about thIngs - -maybe FINALLY going to see a little bit of a peak of sunshine headed this way - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

I understand opioid use is down in Lawrence as people anticipate easing of their pain.

  • follow up on the two possibles I mentioned. - the 4 * wide receiver out of Arkansas said: the Hiring of Les Miles hiring — opens Doorway to KU - - -the 3 * LB - -said he grew up loving LSU football and has been a fan of Les Miles. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Les Miles has a Dos Equis ad? Awesome!

  • @Gorilla72 Yeah I just saw that. Cool !

  • @JayHawkFanToo Has Les ever been on probation before?

  • @BShark

No, and I hope he does not start now. If ant place can tempt a coach to take shortcuts to improve from its current condition, KU would be it.

  • Well, everyone is doing it. What should we expect from Miles. We just want him to win right?

  • @JayHawkFanToo

I assume based on what you’ve said about Brown then that you are as nervous as I am whenever he is around. He and CS have seemed pretty tight over the years. There’s definitely a part of me that has never liked that.

  • @cragarhawk

Yes, Brown was Coach Self’s mentor so they will always have that relationship. He does some scouting with Coach Self and from the basketball perspective I am sure he is a good person to have but from the administrative part he makes me very nervous.

  • Well wonder exactly how much fire there is behind the smoke? UNC Coach - -Fedora - -lots of talk about him coming to KU to be Miles OC.

According to Brett Fredlauder - -Will be Les 1st hire. - - -( Run heavy spread guy ) - -with some spread option - depending on situation -AnyBody? - - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

    North Carolina now.

  • @Woodrow

I was just about to type that, but you beat me to it.

  • Man I have some short comings – I know that , BUT dammit man -wouldn’t you think Les would have the guys for his Coach’s lined up by now or is at least done pondering them and now trying to get them on board and get this thing rolling?

he needs to be getting the guys out and hittin the trail and trying to get some guys on board. - He gonna lose what little advantage he has for what’s left - -or for flipping some guys - -we need to Rock - -let’s get going see whats still available. - -we gotta get rollin.- -ready to see some names.

So do we think Pooka will come back? - -he would be a big boost getting him to stay. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer73 It’s entirely possible Miles choices for coordinators are still this weekend. Alabama’s QB coach is one of the rumored names to be OC so he wouldn’t be available to be announced until after today. If it’s Jedd Fisch, he may not be available to commit to KU full time until January.

  • Thank God Vick came thru in the clutch, it would’ve been a bad omen having lost with Les in the house after being announced at the half.
