WVU player punches TT fan

  • Very hard to tell from the videos and easy to maybe take it out of context but at first glance it looks like there was a security line of sorts between the crowd and the players and a couple of players were outside that line, perhaps starters coming back to the bench and one of them is the one that punched the fan that seemed to accidentally bump into him (unlike the Jamari incident) as he ran into the court. Also, at least two other players jumped past the security line and shoved fans running to the court. Looks likes a lot of frustration on the part of the WVU players and maybe now they know how other players feel when they play them and get bumped a lot harder.

  • @Gunman This feels like hyperbole. Imo Huggins would still be a hall of fame coach, West Virginia would still be ranked, they would still press significant portions of the game, and we would still be looking at a likely impending loss on Monday, even if the game was less physical. I guess you’re saying that West Virginia as it currently plays wouldn’t be ranked if they were hypothetically in a world where more fouls were called and they were to do what they do regardless of whether whistles were blowing or not. Sure. But let’s not discount their talent, experience and ability to adapt.

  • @approxinfinity You got me with the hyperbole. Would you say HOF Huggins style of play is what fans love?

  • WVU is a possible B12 conference champion? They really need to learn how to conduct themselves in a hostile environment. The question isn’t whether there will be suspensions, but when. My guess is suspensions will take place after the KU game in Motown. The punching player should be suspended, and the other 1-2 players behind the punching incident should also be suspended.

This is unacceptable and has nothing to do with bball. A team has got to learn how to conduct themselves. Let’s see what happens and more importantly when it happens. It will likely take the rest of the year to decide what officials will do about this incident. The fan did nothing to provoke the player. Even if a fan “bumps” a player accidentally, the player, like JTray, must use restraint like JTray. The ksuck fan intentionally bumped JTray and he was dealt with appropriately. I don’t think this player should be suspended for one game. But I see it as the player not conducting himself as a student athlete. Rather he has issues that need to be addressed by WVU. The player should be suspended for the remainder of the season. I don’t care if he is JCarter or a 3rd string scout player. This has got to stop. The B12 has already addressed this and has a policy. Let’s see how it’s enforced.

  • @Gunman @approxinfinity

WVU ranks 319th in the country in fouling, at about 21.4 per game. It is a myth that they don’t get fouls called on them.

KSU, btw, is ranked 229th, at 19.2. So, getting 4 calls fewer against them yesterday than their avg caused Squeaky to bitch. Point plankin’!

The reality is they need to keep the fans away from the players. Players have a lot of adrenaline, they are intense from the competition, and losing heightens that.

This subject here , I couldn’t agree with you more. - -I mean your going to have excuses both ways on this But like you said they just bottom line you just HAVE to keep these fans of the floor. Players are still worked up P - - - - - off - and then you have some jack ass rush the floor , maybe say something trying to puff his chest trying to be a Billy bad ass wanna be -umm a good time. - Emotions are still running very high. .

These schools just have to do a better job of crowd control. I mean ya there are going to be sometime I reckon where it is just in avoidable but come on. After watching the link you provided YA he took a pretty vicious swing at the guy, lucky he didn’t connect, was the player wrong for that? - - ya but again come one there were some other players involved not sure what will come out of this Harris could very well be suspended for a game don’t think he is a key any ways though is he - -not that this matters in a situation like this anyways just curious.

One of these times it is going to get really ugly. Fans need to act like they have been there before show a little class, you can celebrate in a lot of ways but this? - -This just shows lack of restraint - but I guess Texas Tech HASN’T been there before - -still.

I remember the Jamari incident that could of gotten really ugly, but Jamari showed real restraint fricken idiots - -this here is just another example only a little worse where fans ruin a huge win - just again like the other night though a Duke game - -the other teams fans they were playing were chanting over rated to duke and main while back at the ranch - -Duke was spanking their ass by 34.

Another example of lack of class is if the underdog pulls the upset and the fans start chanting over rated - -really why the hell you wanna chant that - -all your doing is detracting from your win - you want them to be as highly rated as possible - makes your win that much bigger - - I agree bud on this for sure. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

And how often do the refs swollow the whistle because they’d be caling a foul multiple times on most posessions…?

  • @Gunman I don’t feel that it is necessarily a bad thing for a team to play physically. - -Bob Huggins will be a hall of fame Coach probably before it is all said and done. - -Ya it is frustrating at times with the way they play but hey it’s who they are, just got to strap it on and get after it. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @mayjay

I disagree. Look at the replay of any WVU game…remember when Chalmers was practically molested by two MU players in Columbia and a foul not called and how we complained about it? The same play is repeated time after time by WVU players and a foul is seldom called even when the rules are considerably more strict now. Look at how they often have their hands on the back of the opposing players and yet, no foul called.

There is zero doubt in my mind that WVU does not get called for nearly all the fouls it should and the refs just call the more obvious ones and ignore the rest otherwise they would not have enough players to finish the game. No question that a lot of this is due to Huggins constantly berating the refs…the entire game, non stop. It does give WVU an unfair advantage any way yo see it.

  • I personally don’t agree with the court storming til the officials and opposing team are off the floor. Then you can trample each other for all I care. In this instance the player was way outta line IMO. Jamari’s deal was different because the guy ran by him then turned around and jumped into him. This guy brushed the player with minimal contact, then took a cheap shot in the back of the head. He should be off the team not question, if he just pushed guy or something along those lines I wouldn’t care but this young man should be charged with assault with a shot like that.

  • Fine them them for court storming! If it happens again they play next years game as both away games! West Virginia players should be suspended, but are they closed tomorrow?

  • @chriz Please tell me you’re kidding. You know damn good and well no opposing player will ever be suspended before a KU game. Then the refs would have to work double time to make us lose.

  • court storming must be stopped.

  • Fans need to be fans. We observe. Those fans who think they are a part of the action are mistaken. No need to be on the court. Plenty of leagues to go play in- Lordy, just enjoy the game.

  • approxinfinity said:

@chriz as much as I want to beat WV, I have a hard time rooting against Jevon Carter. He feels a lot like their version of Frank to me. A solid senior guard, tough as nails, that has improved himself every year, and seems to have a good attitude. So I hope he plays, does well, and we just do better than his team.

I know, I’m the exact same, I love the kid. The post was in jest. I just think the only way to win is if he’s not playing lol.

Or if De Sousa does his best Tarik Black impression.

  • I absolutely insist on the WVU player being suspended for the KU game!!!

  • In fact, suspend two of their players.

We have to get the numbers on our side.

  • @kjayhawks Should they put a message on the scoreboard to fans blinking---- Wait—Wait---- Wait— Not Yet— Not Yet---- Get Ready— Get Ready-----Simon Says Go— Make Idiots of Yourselves— Way to Go Fans, You make us Proud!!

  • Final ESPN has something on the matter, that the B12 is reviewing it. Wesley Harris is the player involved, he averages 21 minutes a games, 6.2 points and 4.6 rebounds. I highly doubt they punish him before we play them with the holiday. But I don’t want any excuses if we win.

  • If the conference does not suspend the players before the game the school should. Somehow I don’t think that is happening.

  • NBC site has a second video from a side angle. It shows a second player, #50, going out to push fans, too.

    http://collegebasketball.nbcsports.com/2018/01/14/video-did-a-west-virginia-player-punch-a-texas-tech-fan-who-rushed-the-floor/

  • The West Virginia players have to have more composure than that. The player should probably be suspended for a game or two.

That being said, Texas Tech is ranked in the Top 10 and was favored to win the game. Why are they running on the court? I don’t feel bad for any college students who get punched in the face in that situation.

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich Yes, assault is always a proper punishment for following a group of rowdy people stepping ontova court.

  • Remind me where I said it was a proper punishment? I said I don’t feel bad for the students, particularly when they make no effort to avoid bumping into the WVU players.

  • Maybe just a rumor… but I heard the entire WVU team ate bird for dinner tonight. Pheasant, perhaps? The symbolism was definitely a Jayhawk.

I hope we are somewhat ready for tomorrow night… but I know we have never been ready to play in Morgantown.

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich Is there a rule that states fans can’t go on the court following a game?

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich Saying you don’t feel bad for someone getting punched in the face is condoning the assault. Having been sucker-punched (in Mission Hills, no less) by someone (who was offended by something said by someone else, no less), requiring a trip to the ER, stitches, Xrays, and new glasses, I assure you people can do a lot of damage with a punch even if unintended. All the kid did was celebrate along with hundreds of other people.

  • @Gunman Probably not, which is why I’m not sad when college punks who act like jerks get hit in the face. Maybe that will change his behavior going forward.

  • @mayjay Okay… I’m sorry someone punched you. Your situation is not really analogous to this situation though.

And sure, if you want to be as dramatic as saying that I’m condoning assault, by all means go ahead. I am condoning assault.

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich

Enough for me on this. You might get a sense of proportion someday. But meanwhile, I hope you don’t run into very many people like you who think anyone who does something slightly wrong derserves whatever they get.

  • “I hope you don’t run into very many people like you who think anyone who does something slightly wrong deserves whatever they get.”

I think you are exaggerating what I said a little bit to make your point. I don’t think I quite said all that. And If I’m behaving like a jerk I don’t mind if someone lets me know about it.

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich I guess it bothered me that it seemed like you were able to accept what happened to the TTech fan, when everyone agreed that he didn’t do anything at all as bad as the KSU fan. We probably all agreed that it wouldn’t have seemed surprising for that guy to have gotten hit, and having initiated a physical confrontation, arguably he would have deserved retaliation or at least could expect it. That is what I meant by proportion–that guy did something.

I don’t think jostling someone in a crowd, whether a bb court or a theater line or a rush to get into a subway car, ever deserves being punched. That is escalation. I might think someone is a bit aggressive, but if someone sucker- punched him, yeah, I would feel bad for him.

  • WVU should suspend both players for Monday night. Waiting for the Big 12 to act means they want these players for THE game Monday, that’s all. They were wrong, no if’s, and’s or but’s about it.

  • @Gorilla72 They won’t and will say they want to take the conference punishment. Beat KU tonight with the two violaters and set them against two other teams they can beat without the bullies.

  • @jaybate-1.0 And Huggy with a big fine of 25 grand.

  • 0_1516038546930_0000.JPG

    0_1516038560052_0002.JPG

  • Nothing yet about the second player who punched…

  • What’s a public repremand. ohh Wesley must be shaking in his boots

  • @BeddieKU23 That’s like a free pass to get out of jail in monopoly. If the home court fans decide to celebrate or congregate on the floor after a game opposing team players (and maybe coaches and managers) get to deck one fan before they will be held accountable above public reprimand.

  • The Big 12 reprimand is a joke. Any thing less than a 3 game suspension for Harris and 1 game suspension for the two other players that left the sidelines to shove players amounts to less than a slap on the wrist.

Players are given a technical just for leaving the bench (Alabama finished a game with just 3 players because of this) but now they can leave the sidelines (albeit after the game) with inpunity and shove fans with no consequences. If the program has any integrity it should sit all 3 players but I don’t believe it will.

  • Reprimand? Slap on the wrist? Sportsmanship conduct of WVU? Well we all know that he was reacting to what he is taught on the court by Huggy Bear. So this is WVU sportsmanship? Hitting opposing fans? This makes me proud of JTray and he set the standard to how a class act player conducts himself in adverse, hostile environments.

Make the B12 proud Huggy and keep the player until after the season and then suspend the hell of the players that acted in accordance with your sportsman like conduct. Again, this is NOT bball and certainly not the B12. Let’s see how Huggy responds to this because now it’s his turn after TT was fined $25,000. It is MLK Day, a day of service. Maybe they will punish the player/s in question to civic duty by going to schools in the Motown area and speak against bullying.

I was hoping KU would celebrate MLK day by freeing Billy Preston to play in this game after serving an ungodly amount of suspensions. Well, I guess we see the real score in the B12. Oh…thank you to Bowlsby for all the help on these issues.

  • We all knew Harris wouldn’t be suspended, come on guys they are playing KU. Look for a suspension tomm

  • 10 push-ups

  • Something doesn’t feel right here.

COME ON , man . I mean ya the player took a swing, the player should be suspended , - When you have these court storms - there is nothing good going to come out of that.

BUT to say this is what Huggy has taught this kid? -That’s just a little bit off the charts. - -Just because people have problems with the aggressiveness of how WV plays - and yes the muggings they hand out to opposing players a lot of time - -To say Huggy teaches his kids to swing at fans - - couldn’t be further of base - that’s just a crazy statement. - -No person in their right mind is gonna say Bob Huggins is going to teach his players to take swings at fans - -Come on, let’s get a grasp on reality. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Everyone needs to chill on this WVU-Tech stuff and focus on our game tonight.

You can be sure WVU is.

Our players are going way deep in Appalachia tonight.

Best tend to our own knitting till tomorrow.

  • Was Josh Jackson was suspended for chasing the young female down, kicking her car, and allegedly threatening to beat her?

  • @Blown he missed the tcu big 12 tourney game because of that?

  • @jaybate-1.0 I highly doubt the KU players are worried about it. The truth be told the guy was getting decent minutes because Ahmad was out and Ahmad, who killed us last year in Morgantown will start in his place and play most of his minutes anyway from here on out.
