Gas BBQ grill problem. Got a fix?

@rockchalkjayhawk I got so frustrated with years of propane problems of all types that I installed the natural gas conversion kit in a new grill when we last moved and connected it to our house supply… Haven’t had any problems since and never having to go empty is a dream.
Perhaps an option for you?
Smart! I’ll have to consider that.
-
@rockchalkjayhawk I usually wrap my food in tinfoil and cook it on the manifold of my truck while I’m driving…
Sorry, I really wish I could help. My best mechanic is YouTube.
-
And for some comic relief…
I whacked the regulator with the wrench a few times, and BAM, the propane started flowing!
Crazy.
-
@rockchalkjayhawk Wonderful! I guess the equivalent of kicking the tires or unplugging something and plugging it back in?
-
Now that you got that grill fired up @rockchalkjayhawk heres some nerd raprock to blast while you grill. I saw these guys live twice. Fantastic show.

This is what I’m doing! We’re building a house now and I’m having Natural Gas line ran to the backyard. My old neighbor had that done and its brilliant!

I’ve found pellet grills to be a happy medium of easy even heat and flavor. The easy cooking even predicable heat like gas. Not as much work as charcoal or wood with no flare ups with the upside of the mild smoke seasoning. It’s cheating really - I don’t even grill now my wife does because she loves that thing.

Here’s my recent BBQ story. It started in February… I was in a Costco and there was a Traeger rep there, pushing their grills. For quite some time I wanted to try a pellet smoker. I was sick of using my offset smoker because I had to constantly watch it all day and then I couldn’t really control the heat so sometimes my results were dry and chewy.
I didn’t buy a grill that day but went home and started studying pellet grills. After days of reading and videos I decided on a Recteq RT-B380X Bullseye Deluxe grill. The name alone convinced me if I also needed a missile system to shoot at a pesty neighbor, this was the grill/M72 LAW rocket. These grills get up to 1000-degrees, so it is more than a slow smoker. I wanted it to be my “all-in-one” smoker/grill/pizza oven!
By the time I tricked out my grill I would have a grand in it. I signed up for emails on their site and received promo/sales material. Suddenly, they had a great sale and all their grills were heavily reduced EXCEPT the model I wanted! This pissed me off so I looked on FB Marketplace and bought one of those Masterbuilt electric upright smoke boxes (used but clean). I paid $65. I figured if I didn’t like it I could at least use it as a warming box when I have a crowd over to keep my cooked meats warm and the flies away. I then bought a $19 smoking chip cage to add more smoke inside the box.
I’ve had it for about 2 months now and I smoke everything! It’s awesome! The temp is very reliable and I’m able to do anything from a light smoking to heavy smoking. Still can’t do pizza, but I’ll live! It gets to about 450-degrees so I can cook in it but not really sear. I have other quick ways to do that.

@drgnslayr have you been to Strouds? They’re closing in May.

Has anyone found a good “all in one” solution? My smoker is the same way.

Eating at a great smokehouse is my solution!
-
@Kcmatt7 Big Green Egg. It’s a beast. True wood burner, not a pellet grill. It’s ceramic and holds the heat in very well. Easy to get a sear, harder to truly smoke though. - give and take.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 All Stroud’s?
-
@patoh3 just Wichita’s
-
I was just informed of it closing last night. It’s the chicken place in north Wichita, right? Will they sell equipment?
-
@dylans big green eggs are awesome for grilling. Never had one but constantly hear the love from owners. Thinking the biggest plus is it insulates heat inside? That Recteq model I mentioned above is quite the rig. It’s not super heavy duty though. I do think some of the other recteqs get pretty hot for searing and fast cooking. More heavy duty. The idea to go pellet is to gain constant heat temps for long periods, too. Some now have Wi-Fi and meat thermometers so you can watch your all night slow smokes from your bed. But you can also buy WiFi meat thermometers to do the same job. I wanted the specific Recteq because of the pizza possibilities. I’m used to a real wood pizza oven cooking at 900 degrees.
-
@drgnslayr I like placing an order and having someone bring me food.
-
@drgnslayr have no idea, just would like to eat there one more time. Been awhile.
-
@drgnslayr Yes, the big green egg can get very hot. It’s ceramic with a felt ring around the seem - it’s very effective at retaining the heat. -I don’t have one though.
We replaced our old Traeger with a new model with WiFi. It will tell you when it reaches heat or if the pellets are low (which is kinda handy). You can use a probe to maintain heat and it’ll tell you when your meat is up to temperature. But like I said my wife loves that thing and I have never once used it. She’s got burgers down to a science - just set a timer and they turn out perfect every time due to the even steady heat.
-
@dylans Before I picked up this $65 used smoker, I only used an offset smoker and had to babysit it and it would still be inconsistent heat. Usually got too hot and my results were chewy!
-
I have a pellet grill and a Blackstone griddle on the back porch. I use the Blackstone a ton since it comes up to temp very quickly, is crazy easy to maintain, and is more versatile. It does burgers better than my smoker honestly. I can go from pulling the meat out of the fridge to eating in like 10 minutes.
-
@FarmerJayhawk an accessory to that Recteq was a griddle top. You can smoke while working the griddle. Another accessory was a top converting it to work like a pizza oven with a pizza stone surface.
-
@drgnslayr nice. I’m going to look at upgrading in the fall for football. I just have a bare bones Z Grill right now. It does the job for smaller things like ribs and poultry but it struggles with temperature regulation for bigger cuts.

When I was a teenager driving a wheat truck during harvest we would put spaghettiO cans on the manifold to heat them up and then drink our dinner lol.

I have a black griddle and I really like it can cook more meals on it with breakfast and such. I’ve had this issue before and I’ve always been able to tap my regulator with a mallet if it to cure itself. But if you can’t get it off to replace it unfortunately you likely will need a new grille.
