Lets go 3-0 on the new season

Zeke Mayo has been getting death threats and racist messages since the game mentioned. Can’t read the article but saw the headline in the KCStar.
-
@wissox That is horrible. Yes, he did not play well today, but I am sure he knows it and is beating himself up enough as it is. It is just a game!! There is no place where this is OK! It seems like we are going backwards with respect to being civilized. I feel like I am living in the Twilight Zone.
-
@wissox @patoh3 He posted them on X and looking at their profiles, I don’t think they are actually KU fans
-
Uncivilized bullies!
-
I honestly am surprised this late in the season self doesn’t have them on lockdown from social media to focus on the task at hand.

Not so fun with the box score!
I may just leave it at one stat today. Horribly, inexcusably, game-alteringly glaring.
3PT%
Texas Tech (just the first half!!!) 10-24 – 41.7%
Texas Tech (total) – 15-43 – 34.9%
KU (total) 4-18 – 22.2%
Bill Self may be the most stubborn man on the planet. Switching and doubling down low is and has been killing us for years. Guys are just WIDE open on the perimeter. Are Athletic Directors allowed to have a come to jesus chat with coaches???
-
@rockchalkjayhawk Yep been saying it for two years, it’s like he forgot 2018 ever happened
-
OH, and JT Toppin…wow. I actually thought Flory would be the perfect defender against him. He was awesome. Jeez.

They don’t make too many Frank Mason types anymore…

This is easily the most anemic team I’ve experienced at KU. Even before Self. But I will give a huge shoutout for KJ today. This loss wasn’t on him.
It didn’t look like we felt like playing today. Anyone else sense that? I watched a lot of college ball today and all those teams were more excited than our guys. I don’t think we were going to beat anyone today.
We still haven’t learned that Hunter belongs in the low post.
So much for our new season…
-
@drgnslayr I honestly thought we played pretty decent for much of the game outside of Zeke. He just looked like he was on a different planet today. Several other guys had hustle plays, KJ had about 10 himself. Our defensive game plan was pure garbage IMO
-
@wissox on this game from today ?-- Granted terrible game but come on , I don’t care if it was for todays game or ANY GAME that’s BD. It’s just one of those Seasons , werer just down, but to threaten someone over a game of Basketball is someone just showing their total ass
-
@wissox I think as someone mentioned above during the game, we are kinda in purgatory for KU basketball. We don’t have the most athletic team and best player on the court most of the time and haven’t for 2 or 3 years. From 1984-2022 95% of the games we played we had the better player and better team. We didn’t always win but if you put Techs team together with ours. I think only KJ if he plays the way he did today and Hunt are the only guys that see the floor. Their guards absolutely put a clinic on ours by a wide margin. Which doesn’t look good going forward. IMO you can’t win a title without great guards, having a dominant post player helps but the guards control the game and have the ball more.
-

We don’t have the most athletic team
This is quite an indictment on Self and the staff after last year’s pledge to go and get some athletes and depth…
-
We played a quality opponent today. So, not a total shame to lose. But at home, i expect us to win them all.
I’d guess we all agree that two things stood out today: Defending the 3 pt line, and Zeke’s poor play.
It wasn’t a piss poor effort, but the above items made it look worse.
-
@SlimShaddy54 said in Lets go 3-0 on the new season:
@bskeet how many turnovers did Mayo have --& how many points did Mayo have ?
He didn’t play well today. And given that he didn’t seem his best most of the game, probably not a great idea to ride him for as many minutes as we did and to have him in at crunch time. That’s on the coaches.
Zeke cares, though. He’s a Lawrence kid who grew up wanting to be a Jayhawk… Lord knows he cares. I think his issue is he cares so much he’s putting too much pressure on himself. Many of his mistakes are fumbles or getting out over the skis and losing control. That’s cognitive load issues.
He certainly does not deserve the barrage of hateful and racist comments, although I’m sure that’s not coming from true KU fans.
-
Missed the game. The crowd got a T for throwing a water bottle on the court? What gives? Normally the crowd is more educated than that - tempting as it may be.

They got a warning for throwing a water bottle on the court after a bad foul call on Rylan.
-
Self sent out a note that was posted on Instagram last night. I think this was unprecedented.
All of it following a disappointing loss after a disappointing season where people are losing their sh*t because they don’t know how to lose. It’s all felt unprecedented.
I don’t like to lose. But it is part of the game. You win some; you lose some.
-
This post is deleted!
-
@bskeet The note was in response to all the stuff directed towards Zeke to try and take some blame off of him since Self can deal with all that stuff.
-
@kjayhawks i see
-
Here’s hoping for a better senior night!
-
I guess for the NBA fans out there the Jayhawks are the equivalent of a 49 win team. I would not expect big things this March.
-
I live in Ohio, and I’m sorry, but it’s become obvious to me that a LOT of Kansas fans under 30 are spoiled brats. I think the fact that they are also Chiefs fans makes this worse. They haven’t really experienced losing, so they can’t handle it. Mix the age, the keyboard warrior mentality, the media-driven modern win it all or you are just a loser narrative, and it’s a mess.

Very true at this point in the season if you expect much outta this group, you are showing you lack of basketball knowledge. It’s a bad year and it stinks for sure but we were statistically due to not even make the tournament. I’ve been frustrated a lot but I have hope with Peterson coming in we can get back to Kansas basketball as soon as next season. I set a goal of winning 20 games and making the tournament as the ceiling and realistic goal for this bunch.
-
Long way from faces change, expectations don’t…
-
Everything is insane. Kansas has a down year and bill self releases a statement. St. John’s wins a REGULAR season title and act like they win the national championship
-
@BigBad It’s because they finally got better than Jay Wright and took the crown from Villanova. Oh wait, Jay retired?
-
Couple of questions here:
-
Is this roster not equipped to play modern basketball or has the game passed Self by? (Refusing to accept the 3 pointers aren’t fools gold and need to be shot and defended)
-
What are the odds of us losing out and being a 9 or 10 seed? (Worst in history is an 8 in 2000, never worn blues in game 1)
-
-
Is there any chance you could rename this site “KU Endzone” since many of us are now more interested in the oval ball than the round one?

I still have zero passion for KU football. No way I get anywhere near that bothered about KU football losing even all their games. KU basketball loses a few games and it bothers me greatly. Cost of being a fan.
Barring a plane crash like WSU I would never shed a tear for KU football. Look at all the crying on here about KU basketball.
-
@dylans different strokes… I mean, for years I felt that way too. But since LL has been here, there’s a glimmer of hope. If you’re a KU fan, even a mediocre (not talking about you) fan - you were excited for football last year for the first time in a WHILE. It didn’t pan out like we wanted, but it still was good to have some anticipation. I feel that way about this coming season. Basketball - I’m used to total domination and being a meh team has no interest to me at all.
-
Word of advise (take it or leave it, I’m far from infallible). Temper your expectations for KU football to reduce the disappointment. I hope the hype is real and I feel as though the program is building in the correct way. I still won’t be surprised by a meh season - more than 2 losses eliminates KU from a meaningful postseason game. Since that’s what I expect, it won’t bother me. Those expecting a playoff birth will be disappointed pretty much every year.
If a person did the same thing with KU basketball, imagine the joy you could experience in a year like 2022 instead of expecting it.
-
@dylans if anyone is expecting KU football to make the Playoff, they are in for a very harsh reality check. Just make a bowl game is my goal at this point until I see us in action.
-
@kjayhawks Yeah - no crazy expectations. A good bowl game would be a great step in the right direction.
-
Not sure it’s the roster. We brought in Mayo, Griffen & Coit to shoot the 3 and they do just that. Returnees Harris and Dickinson are not good 3 pt shooters. Storr is shooting career lows across the board (FG, 3pt, FT).
It’s how we are getting the looks and the reliance on getting the ball inside to shoot 2’s. It’s a complete mess.
It’s certainly possible we limp into the tournament with 13 losses at this stage.
-
@BeddieKU23 I sometimes feel like we don’t let the guys shoot enough or look to score from the outside is some of the issue. You can play inside-out to generate good looks from distance. I still think half of our guys looked terrified to shot the ball. Interesting stat on Twitter, said this will be our worst season since 83 and that is also the last time we lost a home game in the month of March. 42 straight senior days will be on the line Saturday.

This isn’t just fans under 30. There are a lot of older fans as well, that have no clue how to handle a down year. This has been brutal on the floor, but I’d argue our fans off the floor have been far more embarrassing.
-
Oh yeah that’s certainly a real thing. When players at KU play with confidence you can see it. There’s very little of it these days. It’s time for a reset on many fronts after this season
-
The Captain Obvious people have pointed to Mayo for this loss. He did have probably his worst game ever as a Jayhawk. But to point blame?
First… fan send him threatening messages… Really? If you can’t smell a purple kitty or mizzou tig doing this, then you haven’t been a Hawk fan long enough to know the stunts pulled.
Throw out Mayo’s 5 TOs, and add a few more makes on his stats… we still would have lost because we never adjusted to what they were doing. Our on-ball screen defense is easily the worst I’ve ever seen under Self. Anyone remember what he used to teach? Heck… they used to never switch and our guys fought through screens so hard opponents gave up running them because their arms would get beat down so hard. And now? I watched this game and I could see our screen defenders getting beat on screens a full two seconds before the screen. They were never setup to beat screens. So we switched… and our switch defense was horrific. Hunter continually got slaughtered.
To make all of our woes intensified our weakside defensive help is horrendous. Basically, we have 4 guys playing most the game in “no mans’ land” not guarding anyone, then get murdered on the trey. Even worse… these same teams drive right past our interior with 4 to 5 players like they aren’t even there, and make a layup or get fouled.
This is so painful to watch. I can’t wait for this season to be over. I’m thinking of having a frontal lobotomy to try to remove my memory bank from this year. It’s challenging everything I ever thought of Self and his KU teams.
Do I blame Self? I know many of you disagree… but yes, I blame Self more than players.
-
@Woodrow You just have to understand it happens everywhere, but people don’t want to hear that. Look how good U Conn has been in the last what ?- - --I will give them the benefit of the doubt- -like ten years? - -Well where they at now -this year they sure the hell not in any bette spot having lost nine- -ten games and in like third or fourth in the Big East – It cycles-- it’s going to happen TO EVERYONE. Sooner or later it’s coming
With the way the Portal and the way it’s become , how the NIL has become a factor and turned it all into a big Meat Market ,it has made it as to where the better talented players are becoming more evenly dispersed it’s changed the playing field.
Certain Colleges still me actually have a richer history , and remain a blueblood if that College might not have that strong of belief in the NIL and or refuse to just throw money around as much- - then bigger brand school or not they will lose out to the more talented player in a lot of cases These players- - these more talented players are going where they are going to get paid more money whether they actually feel the other school less NIL is Still a better school- - -they taking that better deal.
Do you seriously believe that if all things equal straight across the board you can seriously sit there and actually say that players like AJ Bantysia the # 1 ranked recruit coming in next year if BYU hadn’t tossed all that money at him , you seriously believe he would of still committed to BYU ?- -If you do then I call BS.- -do you think if KSU hadn’t offered Coleman Hawkins the money they did, he still would of went there anyway ?-- Ya ?- -ok lmao. Again the talented id more spread out…
Back to the cycling where all schools or biggest majority of them go through cycles of down years and it’s just going to het worse with the distrubution of players across the Nation now- Big reason people see it more badly like with KU - -A Lot bigger brand-- blueblood , Historty- -when we have down year- -years when cycling people just can’t grasp reality.
Look at Kentucky ? Huge Brand Name School - -blue blood of blue bloods - -down years , always loaded with 5 * players and portal players , what are they doing this year ?- -hoovering around with eight nine losses- - - cycling, you don’t think they won’t er back ? -What about N Carolina ? - -Cycling Do these teams just suck ?- -umm no , it’s the other Schools now getting better elite players also. Your not ever gonna see anything again like what KU did with winning so many dam conferences i a row. You’ll neve come close to ever seeing a dynasty like UCla had- -It’s just got a lot harder with the Portal and NIL
-
@dylans healthy take.
-
@SlimShaddy54 maybe. Or maybe small school donors get tired of shelling out big money for recruits if it doesnt translate to success.
I agree with you in principle but the dust hasnt settled. We will see if new normalized behavior leads to a competitive advantage for the more motivated basketball schools.
-
@approxinfinity Hopefully that doesn’t just mean the SEC donors realize it’s cheaper to have good basketball than football and decide to do both! This year is bothersome in that aspect.
