It’s a win. Once again, “Hated Hunter” leads the way with about half our stats.

So, was the game plan to play through Hunter or did the guards just take the night off? Only 12 3s even attempted by our guards and they only made 3. Altitude, lateness of game or they just don’t care? Or they suck? 16/28 FTs, Jeez. If NIL estimates are correct and Storr was paid $800,000, that means he’s been paid $4,762 per point. 0 pts last night in 8 minutes. And while I’m being negative, KU not being ranked means 3 more clicks on ESPN to get the score. Oh woe is me.

  • Well winnin ugly is still winnin so we’ve caught our breath just a little bit. Obviously there’s no reason why this team can’t start playing like they were in November and well, November, but now of course mediocre teams know they can hang with us and beat us. Dickinson was what we always thought he’d be.

  • There seems to be an increased sense of accountability across the board, and it definitely helps when the biggest dude plays with a chip.

    mag

  • I follow Matt Tait on X and he usually will tell it like it is and said the guards had a rough night but the sense of urgency was much better as a core. As odd as it is to say about Kansas basketball this is our first time winning back to back games in over a month. Baby steps in the right direction @drgnslayr Hunt has been great the last two games because he actually seems to be playing like he gives a rip. He’s has earned plenty of criticism but I think him and Zeke really hold the keys to our season at this point. Which scares me with how Zeke plays away from AFH.

  • We need a few things to stabilize. If the big rotation and effort level can be a settled thing then we can gets the guards sorted.

I have to admit i was in and out of consciousness by the end of the game. What I did see with KJ / Hunt / Flory minutes distro didnt seem unnatural despite box score showing just 15 min, and KJ at 30 with 2 rebounds.

Can someone who drank coffee or something tell me if this felt troubling? I do remember KJ coming out with great energy and 7-13 is solid, but wondering if when he was flagging, Flory could have been utilized more effectively.

  • @approxinfinity with Shak out I think we have found our 7 with Flory and Diggy off the bench. At this point Storr is just a lost cause

  • @kjayhawks

Yeah the rotation seems pretty set now which is a good thing. No more tweaks unless there’s injury.

  • Zeke’s performances away from AFH really concern me headed into March. Avg just 10ppg in conference road games vs 19.8 ppg at home. He’s had 7 20 pt games this year but none since 1/28. Need to get him going again. A 1/2 punch of him and Hunt getting close to 20 in a game would make things a lot easier for this offense. They are 4-0 in games where they both score 20 or more and avg 85 ppg as a team.

  • Maybe everyone has rotation change exhaustion. We got out rebounded badly, but if this formula locks in good chemistry then I guess it is what it is.

  • Rylans 4 assists is a nice sign. He seemed to be multidimensional on offense

  • @kjayhawks said in Man is KU is really going to stomp Colorado tonight!:

Worst all big 10 player of all time? I’d be happy with Diggy getting all of Store’s minutes at this point and I never thought I’d say that.

  • I feel bad for AJ and wish him the best. I feel like he is not interested in basketball but has always had the raw talent to make it work.

  • Self did a great job subbing to keep guys fresh. Colorado played hard and didn’t give us any clean looks from three without us hurrying or forcing them. It appears we are bad at setting picks and ball handlers steer wide so defenders are not getting scrubbed off. At times Hunter had about half our total points and rebounds. Without his nice touch on 5-7’ shots which have been missing we lose. He got hacked a bunch. Didn’t react but played hard. Rylan worked hard on both ends but he and AJ can’t buy a layup due to what I don’t know.

  • A nice rest before TTU at home to make it three wins in a row and another short turnaround game at Houston where we can avenge our most heinous loss this year. Then we beat Zona in Allen. We are 22 - 9.

  • @BeddieKU23 yes that’s what I was getting at above I don’t think this team can consistently muddy up the game against a good team especially with Shak out. We are 14-1 on the season when we score more than 74 points the lone loss was the Houston crap our pants twice ordeal. To me we just need to guard with some pride and move the ball on offense. Zeke, Hunt, Rylen and Flory aren’t great defenders and that’s not gonna change in a few weeks. Play sound team defense and it’s basically a race to 75 IMO. To get to the 75 we need AFH Zeke to show up in March or it’s gonna be a short ride yet again.

  • @approxinfinity said in Man is KU is really going to stomp Colorado tonight!:

Rylens 4 assists is a nice sign. He seemed to be multidimensional on offense

He had 6 on Saturday, I think he is really starting to mesh with the rest of the starters

  • 28 FTs on the road is a great sign. That has to be at or close the most trips to the line that we have had this season. Need to keep that up for games where the outside shot isn’t falling.

Also impressed with Rylan making an impact on the game even when his shot wasn’t falling. We weren’t seeing that earlier in the season and he was probably the best of our guards last night. Not there yet but some signs to be optimistic moving forward so hopefully the team stays locked in.

  • KJs rebounding was probably the most glaring stat looking over the box score from last night. 33 minutes and 2 rebounds is crazy. Shocked Juan couldn’t get at least one in 34 minutes but the guards outside Rylen definitely seemed to leave a lot to be desired

  • @kjayhawks Its Rylan 🙂 I’m making a point of spelling it right. He’s trying.

  • KJ basically makes the game a 4v5 in two areas: he can’t shoot 3s and he doesn’t rebound. That means that Hunter also can’t shoot 3s, even if he could do so, because we need him to rebound. So, no 3’s from our 2 bigs. Need to get the guard scoring sorted to have balance. I wonder what the leaast number of 3s made in the tournament in the modern era is. We are averaging 7.21 made 3’s per game this year. Wait, was it us in 2022? lol.

Also, I appreciate that KJ boxes out, but taking the sum of the parts, if KJ boxes out and nobody else rebounds, thats how we end up -16 in the rebounding column, or whatever it was, even with Hunt pulling 13.

  • Hunter Dickinson Highlights vs. Colorado (32 Pts & 13 Rebs)

  • It’s seeming the lightbulb is at least warming up for Rylan. We really need another scoring option to get this team humming. We don’t win that game last night without Rylan playing better.

If I was on the team (LOL) I’d be all over AJ’s case. The dude can play but his play is tanking our promising season. Lob city could be our nickname if coach frees that up. One to KJ, one to AJ, one to Flory, rinse repeat.

  • I think that the ref’s foul threshold was smaller with more fouls called. There are several games this year where we should have had more FT’s if the refs had called it like last night.

  • @wissox said in Man is KU is really going to stomp Colorado tonight!:

It’s seeming the lightbulb is at least warming up for Rylan.

He was way more decisive on the catch.

You can tell the coaching emphasis is ball movement and player movement.

  • @wissox we had quite a few lobs thrown, to Hunter too. AJ should’ve had one.

I thought Juan had a bad night and he is a big part of feeding perimeter game, along with KJ and Hunter. A big part of this was how Colorado played us. They didn’t want us to beat them with treys so their spacing shut us down.

I could be wrong about this… but isn’t the $800k with Storr strictly the valuation of his NIL contract? Players are actually paid by their names, images, and likeness. But I also think schools have organized NIL groups to play lump sums. Anyone in here know… did AJ get paid a lump sum?

  • Except for a few plays (thinking he was playing volleyball), Hunter played like a first-team All-American last night! Excellent!

And though KJ didn’t rebound well, he was the other glue for this team, especially with his energy on both sides of the ball! Great job!

I’m liking David’s shot, he just needs to make sure he’s squared up to the basket and not force them.

Rylan is playing more aggressively and sometimes driving… something all our guards need to do. Really… outside of KJ, none of our guys like to play through contact. They all try to keep space away from the defender in midrange and low post. NOT GOOD!

KJ plays through contact? Ha. I think you’re thinking of a different KJ! With his body, KJ SHOULD play thru contact, but doesn’t. Rarely goes up strong. (Alley oops don’t count)

  • KJ looks for space in the air to jump into that isnt inhabited.

You all know I don’t love KJ playing 33 minutes a game but I’d love to see Bill run the pick and roll with him rolling to the hoop more with his athleticism. I think we need to try a little harder to get Zeke and Rylan going early in games with an elevator type screen.

  • @kjayhawks teams don’t honor d2 which is who handles the ball on the pnr and they don’t honor kj so they say off both

Yet bill keeps running those two as the main guys

Zeke and flory, zeke and kj, griffin and those guys work way better than d2

  • Had this thought too about our late game time. ACC now includes Cal and Stanford and there’s no way on God’s green earth that they would schedule Duke to start a game at 11 Eastern time or even 10.

  • @wissox I’ll take shit that will never happen for $500 Alex

Ran into a random Wisconsin fan on the beach. (I’m an easy fan to spot in my KU shirts everyday- as an aside one of the locals asked me if that was the company I worked for shirt and hat matched lol I dress like an idiot abroad) He was laughing at how bad KU was with the best roster money could buy. I asked him about all of Wisconsins NCAA championships. Turns out that’ll shut him up- and no he doesn’t want AJ back.
