Who would ever replace Self?

Nobody thinks it would be a good idea to have a guy like Case taking first hand tutelage from CS be kind of a coach in waiting?
I like Case but if he is the plan I hope he would get some time as HC at another school first.
That shouldn’t be a prerequisite though. Roy came here with no head coaching experience and that turned out fine. Obviously that’s not a guarantee of success, but a lack of head coaching experience shouldn’t preclude someone either if they have other qualities.
There’s not much out there now in regards to coaches with KU ties, either as a former player or coach out there. In the NBA, Jacque Vaughn and Aaron Miles are the possible options, Rex Walter’s is in the NBA now, but struggled as a college coach at San Francisco. At the college level, Jeremy Case and Evan Manning are the only possible options at this point. Tad Boyle and Jerod Haase haven’t done enough in their current jobs to merit any serious consideration.
I’d say you find someone who has ties to any of the bluebloods because those are the people who are going to understand the pressure of coaching at a place like Kansas. That’s part of why Roy worked despite having zero ties to KU prior. He came from a blue blood and understood what it takes to be successful at a blue blood program.
I would look for someone who has ties to a modern day blue blood like KU, UNC, Duke, Kentucky, Gonzaga, Arizona, UConn, Villanova, or another program that’s had a lot of success over the 30 or so years.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 most of them that were good retired last yr. old farts. New blue bloods stink, plus nova. Cal, Few?

I’m not talking about Few, Wright or those coaches specifically, but people from their trees that have connections to those schools. Tommy Lloyd for example from the Mark Few tree. Scott Drew is another person also starting to develop an impressive coaching tree as well. This is why someone like Evan Manning could be an option someday. Played here and currently an assistant under Mark Few at Gonzaga. That’s what I mean by connections to a current blue blood program.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 i guess I’d rather they be from our tree. Just me.

There’s not much on the KU tree right now to think that’s a realistic option at this point.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 well, maybe 5-6 yrs down the rd. I wasn’t thinking about Evan. Still like Miles, Jacque, Case seems to be doing really well.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 I don’t see Miles or Vaughn going down to the college level. I don’t really care that much if Self’s successor has KU ties or not, I want a coach who who’s going to win at a high level at KU.
-
Jacque just got the Nets job with a new contract so he is out.
-

Kansas head coach Scott Drew
I’d vomit myself to sleep but he’s the one coach that’s elevated his program to KU’s level in the conference. His x’s and o’s will never compare but he recruits, develops and wins. He’s basically the only name I would even think of currently.
-
Self at the end of the day probably can steer the AD in the direction he needs to go when it’s time. I’m sure Self will have the best guess who could lead them
-
@BShark @approxinfinity - Ban this dude forever please.
-
@BeddieKU23 I would quit watching. Just like I did when his Drew’s twin brother was at WSU.
-
Guess it won’t be Calipari -
Lol… so many UK fans thought they had it made signing him into perpetuity… now they feel like suckers!
-
@BeddieKU23 the whiniest coach in our league? Brings a tape to show Fran we get the calls in AFH? That guy? He has the best backcourt in America. What would Self do with that? I think he’s slipped a lil since Tang left, the ’s. Remember when he stuck his head in our locker room and Svi said, “Who’s that?” Remember when he took his team off the court pregame so they wouldn’t watch our historic pregame video? He’s a wuss!
-
@Crimsonorblue22 I agree he’s a wuss and a dweeb but do think he should get a little credit for developing that “best backcourt in America.” The guards he’s had come through there all get better over time and develop skills that make them hard to guard. Some of that has to be coaching and the system.
I think about it like this, Harris would probably never make it off the bench there in 4 years but a guy like Elijah Johnson or Malik Newman would have been an absolute STAR. Obviously those guys had success at KU as well but would have been HUGE at Baylor. Just my two cents.
-
@benshawks08 no!
-
He’s cringe for sure, I have zero love for him personally but I do respect what he has done and I think we are little blinded to how good he’s been since they are a conference foe and we know the ins and outs. Basically everything Drew does on the court rivals the best of the rest out there. Won a championship, develops talent, gets talent in the door. If he never had to talk the media or deal with his way’s I’d be all for it. I’m surprised his name wasn’t mentioned since he is the coach KU has struggled the most to beat in the last 5 yrs. I’ll end with, he’s a creepy dude
-
This is an event that is 10 to 15 years away. The guy that replaces Self might not be coaching right now.
-
@Jethro that would be wonderful!
-
@Crimsonorblue22 Drew reeks of douchiness and small dog syndrome. But he deserves credit for what he has done in Waco. People forget that program was nearly cancelled before he was hired due to teammates killing each over drugs. That place was really as low as you could go before him.
-
That guy just looks like he must have had some connection to the Branch Davidians. I’m a no vote.
-
I think Drew has come a long ways over the years. I used to slam him and call him the “Rolex coach” saying he would start a recruit visit with a handshake while sliding on a Rolex.
I’ve watched a lot of interviews with him over the years. The guy showed some humility and was open-minded to improving his knowledge of the game. Add that in with the Baylor administration making a big “spiritual commitment” to all their programs and it does add up to success.
We can’t say Baylor is just a flash in the pan anymore. Their environment is built for success. For that, I give Drew his hard-earned kudos!
I do wonder if they dip somewhat from losing Tang because I think he is popular with players.

What about Norm Roberts?
-
Any thoughts from those of you who follow these things, about this guy from Seth Davis’s list of coaches likely to move to new jobs this year:
Pat Kelsey, head coach, Charleston. In just his second season with the Cougars, Kelsey has led the team to a 31-3 record, the CAA regular season and conference titles, and the program’s first AP Top 25 ranking in 13 years. But he’s no one-hit-wonder. Kelsey is a Skip Prosser disciple who was an assistant coach at Wake Forest and Xavier, and as the head coach at Winthrop, he led the Eagles to three league titles in his last five years. He coaches an exciting, up-tempo style and has a high-octane personality, which would be appealing to a program in need of energy.
-
Definitely going to get attention after their season is over. They look like a team that can win a game next week
-

What about Norm Roberts?
ya , why not - -Knows Coach Self’s system, so no change there, Been with Ku as long as Coach - -seems like continuity wouldn’t been broken. - We could do worse
-
I’m probably forgetting someone, but would Haase be amongst the best KU guys to hire today? Personally I’d rather they looked for the next rising star, but I suppose that could be Jeremy Case in 10 years as well.
-
@dylans There’s not really anyone with ties to KU that are impressive enough at this point to merit interest for a job the caliber of Kansas.
-
@BShark LMAO I’ve never seen a better use of this meme.

Let’s get Haase at K-State. After Tang leaves, let’s you and me start a hire Haase campaign. Those dumb rednecks won’t know any better. We’ll go on their boards, and pretend we’re real fans.
-
@Jethro lol. I don’t want a KU guy hired. I think would be a mistake - none are any good and they’d be hard to fire.
I’m still a Brad Stevens fan.
-
Norm not looking too bad.
-
I love Norm.
But Norm had his chance at St. John’s. I think we can do better. And I think we can find a guy who will be here for 15+ seasons.
-
@Kcmatt7 but he might never lose a game again!
-
He’s to old
-
@Crimsonorblue22 That’s what Peter said about shadow and how did that turn out?!

Young stud who will be the obvious choice at the time. A decades long hire that is a marriage to the institution. It’ll be a new beginning and I’m glad I’m not shouldering the decision.
-
Watching Norm has me pining for Self if anything. He certainly has a higher tolerance for mistakes for better or worse.
-
Slim chance, but maybe Jay Wright would come out of retirement for a few years? Easier to recruit at Kansas.
-
Would jay wright have the courage to play KJ at the 4 like norm?
-
@BShark I honestly sometimes wish BS would let guys play thru their mistakes a little more often, especially the younger guys. I agree with about 95% of what BS does and hindsight is always 20/20.
-
Norm and jay r old

And a much higher tolerance for MJ!
Although I was happy to see him play, despite his play.
-
If Self doesn’t come back, I’d like to see KU go after UConn’s coach.
-
@AsadZ oh lord it would be harder to cheer for KU with a Hurley at the helm
-
Farmer, The guy can recruit and coach.
-
Doesn’t mean I have to like him
-
Perhaps I’m missing something as I don’t have information on his background
Pardon my ignorance here
