When Remy makes it back...

@Zabudda i would like to see joe get a couple games to play through all mistakes and show us what he can do from end to end.
Are you comfortable losing two games that could have been wins and possibly the league championship?
-
@benshawks08 ummm our super bowl might be the league this year so maybe not this year
-
I think Joe continues to get valuable minutes. Remy is still a ways off or not returning. Self mentioned resting Dajuan and Och more. This definitely needs to happen before March.
We still need to iron out tempo. Some games we bring itā¦ other games we donāt, and when we donāt control tempo, we struggle to put teams away.
-
Self is already resting guys. They had 2 days off after the game Monday. Began game prep for WVU yesterday. Game Saturday then 3 days til KSU at home, then another 3 til the big one at Baylor. The last week of the regular season is a cluster due to the TCU situation back in January. Will be interesting to see how that week is managed
-
@BeddieKU23 If they have the B12 locked up after the 1st TCU win, he should give Joe, JCL, KJ and Zach 30 minutes the 2nd one. He wonāt, but he should.

Self also said without Remy, itās hard to rest Harris because Yesufuās not a point guard (Selfās own words and said multiple times during Hawk Talk this week) and Pettiford can only play a short amount because of his abdominal injury so Self has been stuck having to play Harris 38+ minutes because thereās not another healthy PG on the active roster right now. At least that was the gist of Selfās comments on Hawk Talk this week.
-
Makes me think Harrisā PT minutes might mean more than Ochās. We did win without Och, showing how otherās can step up when they have to.
What are your thoughts there? Which playerās minutes are most important at this time?
-
@drgnslayr Best and most important player are not always the same person. Ochai is definitely KUās best player, but Iād argue heās probably only the third most important player for KU behind Harris and McCormack. Harris is by far KUās most important player because he makes everything run on offense. McCormack is more important to me because when heās on, like he is now, it opens up the offense more.

Looks like he still isnāt playing tonight.

This is very deserving of an emoji, but for the life of me I dunno which! A laughing emoji because it was funny. A crying emoji because itās sad that others donāt believe Remy will be back.

I love Remy. I love his fiery attitude, the joy he derives from playing ball and even how he leads the cheers from the bench during his down time. I was really excited to have him on the team this year and Iām truly sad that we may not get to see what he could really do in a Jayhawk uniform.
I know heās had the knee issue and suspect there is some head-butting between him and Self regarding on-court expectations, but I certainly donāt and canāt know all the particulars. I really hope he does come back for the tourney as itās another thing for opposing teams to have to game plan for and he does provide positive energy when heās out there.
Unfortunately, I fear that years from now I will remember Remyās time here as another āwhat might have beenā moment, alongside the cancelled Covid post-season, Embiid being injured for the tourney, 1997, etc, etc.

Movement coming on this. Still donāt think he plays tonight.

Lol.
Something happening Thursday will be announced presumably by the weekend. Which will lead to another announcement. Thatās my educated guess.

Ugh! Why must you do this?
-
Even Fran called it out last night with Remy. How does he catch up with our offense? Heās likely to just be a role player off the bench. Meanwhileā¦ Joe is creating a flow with this team that is hard to deny. And I doubt Joe has hit his ceiling with this team.
-
Joe just fits this group. He knows where he is at in the pecking order. He doesnāt play like he has something to prove. Just out there playing a role on the team, and youāve seen this team really come into their own since this shift happened.
-
-
Iāve seen Joe sky for some rebounds lately, i mean he jumps out the roof for them. Love it. He also sprints down the floor with the ball and tries for the easy bucket. Things I love and believe make a huge difference. Iām crossing my fingers some of these behaviors become contagious.
-
@drgnslayr @Kcmatt7 @RockkChalkk
All excellent points about Joe.
Joeās earned Selfās trust in the month of February. I was excited when he decided to join KU but seeing his impact the past month Iām even more excited about his future here. Kids a gamer and with March coming up heās already proven the lights are not too bright.
-
Joe is quick - I mean greased lightning quick when he gets out and heads down the floor - - -itās on. True there are some times little wild but guys - - Joe is coming - -I mean Joe is coming. You can see him getting more and more comfortable with his role with this team , he is flowing better and man can that kid scoot. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Hereās the complicated thing for KU.
Yesufu is probably the best fit with KUās best players because he has the build and athleticism to switch everything out front. Harris, while an excellent defender, isnāt big enough or strong enough in certain matchups. Yesufu is finally finding that groove.
Harris is going to play because he has a role on this team and his offense is improving. He has gotten out of the non-threat territory, which makes KU a very dangerous team offensively.
So the question is how to bring Remy back. I think Remy is truly hurt. I think its one of those things that he can go 70%, but not 100%. Since Self isnāt going to let him go at 70%, the waiting continues. But the bigger question is can he get to 100% between now and the tournament? I think KU will need him in the tournament as an additional scoring threat. This team isnāt a defensive juggernaut, so they will have to be able to score against anyone. There is going to be a night when Agbaji canāt get free and either Wilson or Braun is cold. In that situation, KU will need another scorer. Maybe that is Yesufu, but Remy Martin has been a 20 ppg guy in his career. He could go for 25 at any moment. If KU is to win a national title, they will need that during the tournament at least once. If Martin can provide that, even for one game, the work to bring him to Lawrence would have been worth it.
-
I just donāt know how he knocks the rust off in just a few games. Weāve just got 4 games, Conf tourney, and NCAA tourney.
I think itās a big gamble if we donāt have him solidified going into the NCAA tourney. I mean this for extended play. He can always go in and have Self keep him on a leash.
-
I still think Remy will pull a āMalik Newmanā and win a big game in the tourney for KU. Not giving up on that guy yet with a lot of do or die games ahead.
-
With Bobby officially out for the season donāt be surprised if Remy is at least active Saturday. They kept Bobby active for emergency and Self mentioned that if Harris got into foul trouble perhaps youād see him out there.
