Sign of the times. No loyalty to programs anymore when you have a free transfer year now

Does anyone in here think our recruiting is done for next year? lol

Not really loyalty when there was little or no choice. The coaches will need to work on making kids understand the benefits of staying in a program.
Much better than, “Sorry, kid. You signed a LOI back in HS, so suck it up or lose a year.”
When loyalty is forced on coaches and schools in honoring contracts, I will lament kids being disloyal.
-
I’m with @mayjay here. Bill literally just forced a signed kid out (that was ALL IN on KU on social media) and it’s almost June…
-
Does make you wonder… did Bill tell Curry he might want to consider transferring… or did Curry figure this out by himself that he wouldn’t see the floor much this coming season? Or is this a sign that none of the 3 guys considering leaving are leaving? Or is Bill still recruiting for next year?
I think #3 is a definite and we will probably see another addition coming. With the portal still probably bringing some activity for the next few months it is hard to think Bill is done.
-
@jayballer67 I’m onboard with Curry, and he has pretty solid handles. Can probably play some 4 too.
-
@BShark In a perfect world so would I, but the world is far from perfect for KU right now and we had to have a team. This is a more than solid class.
-
@KirkIsMyHinrich I don’t see it. They will not redshirt. Clemence and Adams are going to play, as will Cam. Should Curry redshirt? Probably, but he won’t. When Dave leaves after this coming season, things will open up. Perfect world? Dave gets (which is his best amount) about 15 mpg and rotate fresh bodies in. It is going to be a guard centric and or bigs shooting ftom the outside offense. Alot of people have given me flack, but look at the bigs that coach is recruiting - they can shoot from the outside.
-
No way on Dave playing 15 mpg. He is our most important player. Needs to get up to 25+.
KJ Adams is a RS candidate. Zach might play some spot minutes but I could see it going either way with him. Not the best fit for Bill’s coaching, from what I’ve heard he is a bit “soft”. How he responds to Bill’s coaching will be something to monitor. @Kcmatt7 knows

Spot on. Dave has to play in the high twenties on this team , just to important for things not to. - KJ for sure needs to redshirt & if we could work out a scenario would probably be good to be able to get Clemence to red shirt too
-
Curry is in no way shape or form a 4. I’m also not sure how you can see him play and think he has handles. It was all dunks against smaller/weaker competition.
@jayballer67 not that it really matters but I don’t think it’s a transfer. KU/Self released him from his NLI because they no longer had room for him on the roster.

OH , ya your right , didn’t really say transfer , he just said he had re-opened his recruitment use of my words wrong
-
@BShark I saw some footage of the guy being able to dribble drive to the basket and finish hard, that’s what I meant by having some handles - was not implying that he could be a wing or guard. I never said he was going up against great competition either. But that does kind of prove my point though, it being that he will land in a D1 program and contribute. At any rate, the ship that is Curry will not be sailing in Allen. So, how many scholarships do we have left? Hard to keep track or count. Agree with you on the jucos, thought that Tyon would be a baller, but that didn’t happen. Larry Johnsons aren’t around anymore.
-
He would get stripped on those moves in P5 ball. He will be a 5 wherever he ends up.
KU is currently at 0 available scholarships. Had to let Curry go to get down to 13.
-
I’m sure we will all be following Curry, wherever he lands… to see if he can translate his game to D1. He definitely had a power finish at the rim, and I can’t say that often about KU bigs… many who couldn’t handle the ball well, or shoot well from the perimeter. Time will tell what we really lost there. It isn’t enough to just be able to dribble the ball a bit… Inside game takes a specific skill set.
-
Bummed Curry was forced out because I was excited to see where he would’ve been in 3 years here. His athleticism isn’t something that can be taught and I was excited to see his progression and refinement to eventually replace McCormack after he left.
If this is because of Ochai coming back though, Self may legitimately end up going 10 deep this year. Who ends up getting bumped from the starting line up? Yesufu, JCL, or Wilson?
Ochai’s return also probably means Pettiford is now a redshirt candidate as well along with Adams and Cuffe.
-

Wondering same thing. If Ochai and Wilson are locks I wonder if Yesufu, JCL and CB will be happy. I’m guessing Yesufu is most likely to come off bench, but can fill in for both 1 and 2.
CB, Yesufu and JCL PT will live and die by the 3.
-
I don’t think JCL will start, assuming Och is back. An Isaiah Moss role is more his speed at this point in his career. He just doesn’t have good enough ball skills to play the 2. I really doubt we redshirt more than Cuffe. Self just doesn’t redshirt multiple guys unless a team is absolutely loaded at one spot, like the 10-11 squad. The exception would be if we found out Bobby is hurt worse than we think, in which case might not be a bad idea.
-
@FarmerJayhawk ok. I know people feel that way it’s just hard to imagine our starting 1 and 2 both being 6 feet tall. You think Martin and Yesufu start?
-

At this point yes. Yesufu definitely isn’t a PG. Bill isn’t afraid to play small at guard. Frank was like 5’10 and Devonte measured 6’1.5 at the combine. Not sure how much difference a couple inches makes (that’s what she said)

@FarmerJayhawk You don’t think KJ Adams redshirts this season? I don’t see a situation outside of an injury where Adams sees anything but mop up minutes this season.

I sure hope your not trying to say That Ochai has better handles then JCL has are you ? - - that is not one of Ochai strengths by far either - -not sayings JCL would start over him BUT I am saying he has better handles ? - - I wouldn’t want to bet the farm on that
-
I’m still having the opinion Ochai will most likely go even though I have nothing to base it on. I just get a gut feeling Self wants a scholie available for one more pick up. Just a hunch.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 I don’t. It would be out of Bill’s norm to redshirt a freshman if he didn’t have to. If it were me I probably would just because there’s no clear role for him this year and he could be a nice player in a couple years.
@jayballer67 not at all. JCL has better ball skills than Ochai but not good enough to play the 2 when Self likes two combos out there.

So in what terms are you talking then ? - - -JCL better Fg % then Och ( 43.5 to 42 % ) - - a lot better ft % then Och ( 86.1 % to 68.9 % ) - - Better 3 pt shooter then Och ( 39.5 % to 37.7 % ) so really where would he not be as good ? - - neither one really plays defense that well. - -Och didn’t turn the ball over as much is really the only area where he is better then JCL. - -assists ration is a wash - - Steals are a wash -I think they pretty much balance one another out
-
@jayballer67 i think Och has been a pretty competent defender for stretches, he just occasionally got lost. He has the body and athleticism for it. Also JCL has hit his ceiling. Hoping Och has yet to.

possibly but I think Och has hit his max , I don’t think your going to see any major improvement from where he is right now
-
@jayballer67 so there was one game he willed us back into by absolutely going off from 3. If he can find that more often that would be a big leap forward. But mostly, I agree with your assessment.

Ah! We’re just talking past each other. By ball skills I mean handling and passing, stuff that point guards usually do. I don’t like JCL or Ochai playing on the ball at all. So I think they’re the same position, and I think we agree on that!

Averaging 6 mpg for Louisville. About 11 points, 11 rebounds, and 7.5 fouls per 40. Has yet to record a block or steal in 48 minutes played.
I do not think he would have cracked the floor for us this year.
-
@Kcmatt7 LOL reading some opinions just above about Ochai that I probably would have agreed with at the time they were written!

Probably wouldn’t have, but he was also a popular pick as redshirt candidate this year anyway so I don’t think it would’ve been much of a shock to anyone. Personally, I think I’d still rather have Curry than Cam Martin because as we saw in the exhibition game, Cam doesn’t have P5 athleticism at all and made McCormack look like Andrew Wiggins athletically. Even though Cam is far more skilled than Curry, the lack of athleticism is going to negate a lot of his skill at this level next season and I wouldn’t be surprised if he transfers down to a low major school. Curry on the other hand has freakish athleticism for someone his size. Curry would’ve been a great piece to bring off the bench behind Clemence next season for his rebounding alone.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 I agree with your post except for Cam transferring. I think he knows his limits and will accept being a role player. I may be wrong but I think Cam just wants to be a part of a big time basketball team to close out a great career

I don’t think Cam sees the floor at all next season either. KU’s going to have Zach Clemence, KJ Adams, possibly Jalen Wilson all returning along with adding Ernest Udeh and Zuby Ejiofor means Martin probaby doesn’t see the floor next season. Also throw in a loss of scholarship, which is pretty likely based on the NC State IARP ruling, and Self may find himself in a situation where he has to get rid of a player to stay in compliance. If the roster situation as far as who stays, who returns, and who comes into the program ends up at 13 players, Cam Martin is the most likely option for transfer out because Self won’t keep a player who’s not good enough to play at KU when there’s a scholarship reduction.
-
I hope it does not happen but I can see it taking place in the circumstances mentioned in the post.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 No doubt Mitch would redshirt again for a couple of years to help us absorb the loss of any scholarships…

Cam is redshirting this year so he can finish his career elsewhere. Who would Cam play over next season? He already lost out to Jalen Wilson, Zach Clemence, and KJ Adams and Self has a couple of bigs coming in 2022 that are higher ranked and regarded than Clemence and Adams were. Cam is also currently sitting at 13th or 14th on the depth chart which is why he’s redshirting this season and if KU only has 12 scholarships available next season, very real possibility by the way, Cam is the odd man out in that situation as well.
And if you think Self won’t force a transfer if needed, then you’re either very naive or just don’t pay much attention because Self has run many players off who weren’t good enough to play at KU.
-

How many other times has Self brought in someone hoping they’d be able to contribute, but didn’t end up living up to expectations? Charlie Moore being the main example in regards to a transfer. Cam’s lack of athleticism was not an unknown issue, but Self was likely hoping that Cam’s skill level was high enough to overcome his lack of athleticism since Cam is a big man that can make outside shots. Self was basically hoping Cam could be a poor man’s Dedric Lawson. It likely became pretty clear early on that wasn’t going to be the case with Cam so he takes the redshirt this year to preserve his eligibility and we’ll likely see him at a low major school next season like an Ohio Valley school where he originally played his freshman season.
It’s a situation where it didn’t work out as hoped, both sides are being mature about it and Self will help Cam find a good landing spot for next season so he can finish his career somewhere other than the bench.
We’ve also seen this situation plenty where Self signs a freshman, they don’t develop as much as expected, and Self helps them find a lower level school where they can thrive at. Cam Martin isn’t the first time a situation like this has happened with Self and it won’t be the last time either. Kyle Cuffe will be another to watch as well as he works on his recovery and basically not playing basketball for 2 years if he’s able to get to a level where he can play meaningful minutes at KU.
-
We really need a covid topic, hard to find you guys. @approxinfinity are you and your fam doing ok?
-
So, if a reduction in schollys is in the works just get an NIL deal that is lucrative enough to pay the tuition for a kid instead of a forced transfer. I’m sure someone can get creative and find a work-around to any potential penalty. Isn’t that what schools have been doing all along anyway?
