Peterson

  • @Woodrow Exactly what I was saying. Just because a player commits doesn’t mean you quit conversing with them or flying to see them , your still recruiting them , it’s an ongoing process. You quit making contact after they verbally commit That is actually taking a bigger risk if de-committing- -Thank you Woodrow , glad to see that there are others that actually understand - -doesn’t take a Rocket Scientist to figure it out lol

  • @kjayhawks

I’m terrified of everything right now.

Perhaps the scheme we are running this year and likely will next year will just work better with different personnel. This years group it hasn’t clicked outside a few games. DP is such a dynamic piece that he’s going to make things look different

  • @Woodrow said in Peterson:

DP will be at KU next year. Also, coaches from all schools go and watch committed players. It is called continuing a relationship. You don’t just ignore players when they commit. This isn’t difficult to figure out.

Yup you gotta keep the kids and their camp happy and still make them feel wanted. It’s especially important with how much we’re gonna need Peterson next year.

  • “When guys commit you don’t cease contact”

Either the board doesn’t read or it doesn’t comprehend - not sure which

Yeah you have a relationship and keep in touch but flying out for a senior night…says a whole lot

Go find me where Self or an assistant went to Josh Jackson, or Embiid, or Wiggins Senior Night and get back to me

There’s some smoke that yeah adidas is holding this together but the reason Townsend was out there on a Friday night wasn’t because “I’m supporting DP for senior night”

  • @kuballin10 you dont 'either understand or just dam i don’t know one more time YES you can and they do who give a shit whether it’s Senior night or not - -it can be Candid camera day and they can still and do fly out when ever they want Jesus man you never cease to amaze me

  • @SlimShaddy54 I do understand it and no, I’m not trying to start something (not sure what I can “start” on a message board). I’m just stating that trip isn’t “normal” - take it as you wish

  • @kuballin10 I’m taking your - - -Dead Wrong

  • Say something dumb and then double down. Amazing.

  • @Woodrow I assume that’s me that you’re referring to. Do you want to be Kentucky during the Cal years? 4-5 OAD’s every year all over the NBA with nothing to show for it? I don’t. But I guess I’m dumb and dumber.

  • Think everyone is rubbed a little raw this season. Im thankful to still be playing meaningful basketball in March and we have the potential to spoil someones dreams in the tourney. I doubt we fix this teams problems but we hung with a top 4 team on their senior night. We showed heart. Light years better than some of our losses

    No sir! Not you.

  • @approxinfinity

Yeah, there was plenty of effort overall, but execution is poor. I think this sets them up to at least have a punters chance of winning on Senior Night.

Good thinking, I just hope we play with energy Saturday and end the season on a high note. Odd stat I seen on X Bill Self is 0-12 vs top 10 teams while unranked to think we should’ve had a few of those this year.

  • @kjayhawks Was that all games or just away games? I thought I’d heard something like that, but maybe not. I mean he hasn’t that many opportunities to play games as unranked!

  • @BeddieKU23 I’m actually calling that also right now ,I was thinking this even before last night , but we has two really good games against Houston , but just self inflected wounds in both games and that being - just careless ball handling and reckless turnovers.

If we can just take care of the ball better then w got a shot . We have seen , and we know from seeing that this team is capable of playing better- -we have seen it- -THIS YEAR . If we play to our capabilities we can make a decent run in the Big 12 tourney and even win a couple on the NCAA. The question of the day is will this team come around and take care of the ball ?-- just some games just sloppy with the ball . We had been averaging just turning the ball over eleven times a game

  • @approxinfinity said in Peterson:

I wonder if that’s a positive for KU or damning for Houston?

  • Okay so what are we thinking here team wise next season? I hope Diggy stays and uses that extra year so whom else do we want to return? Obviously Flory, Mari and Elmarko. I’m really thinking that it I’m just worried that guys in the portal won’t want to come here thinking it’s purgatory and it’s how the transfers have worked out here.

  • @kjayhawks I just think we should hope for Rylan to come back, he probably won’t but just think you would see a whole different version of Rylan , he would have a year of experience under his belt , kinda more comfortable with the system, we can use his outside presence, he has shown flash’s --, then I’m all over Diggy, somehow got to get him to come back. Think chances are pretty good there, adds good bench pint production good off the bench can give you that lift, scrappy , has confidence, doesn’t get shell shocked if he doesn’t hit first shot.

One thing that was thrown for us when I played, was this thought :- - The difference between a good shooter , and a great shooter.-- - A good shooter takes a shot or a 2nd shot - -they don’t fall , then he is pretty much done - -A great shooter he shoots his first , second shoot they don’t fall-- he just keeps shooting because his belief is all his shots are goin in- -has great Confidence.- would really like those two back

  • After this season and they had eligibility left who do we have that most contending teams would covet? Hunter yes, KJ maybe, Flory probably, Dujuan maybe, Coit probably, Zeke maybe and Shak, Storr, Rylan not really. Too many opponents that look like a better team have the longer more athletic guards and forwards like, Mizzou, Arkansas, Houston, Tech, ISU and others. We just looked smaller and more disorganized against them. They also performed consistently in crunch time by getting on the boards and hitting shots. Except for KJ and Diggy we have seen others play much better and if they do we can save the season. Will it happen?

  • @kjayhawks

I would add Passmore to the hopeful they return column.

    Flory, Elmarko, Rakease, Diggy, Mari.

    Incoming Peterson, Tiller, Calderon

Needs- starting 2 guard, starting 3, starting 4, backup big, best available.

  • @BeddieKU23 not xure how true it is but have heard Calderon may not qualify

  • @kjayhawks said in Peterson:

For me, ideally the starting line up next season would be:

    1-Jackson, Coit, McDowell

    2-Peterson, Coit, Passmore, McDowell

    3-Griffen, Passmore, Calderon

    4-???, Calderon, Clemence

    5-Bidunga, Tiller

If Griffen leaves, then that creates 2 open starting spots at the 3 and 4. I would also look at a back up 4 as I don’t think Calderon or Clemence should get a lot of minutes next season. As far as rotation level players go, that’s about it for next season for what I would be looking for.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 I think Clemence is just a waste of space at this point unfortunately

  • @kjayhawks him and McDowell. I have a feeling Tiller will be positioned to be the low post guy, ala Lando. I hope I’m wrong, though.

  • @kjayhawks said in Peterson:

@Texas-Hawk-10 I think Clemence is just a waste of space at this point unfortunately

For me, keeping Clemence is bigger than basketball. It’s about helping him get his degree and setting him up for his post basketball life. I’m fine with him being the last scholarship players on the bench because he’s shown he can playa few minutes and be fine. If he feels he can keep himself out of trouble and wants to play more, then a transfer to another program is fine. I don’t want to keep him because of his basketball ability, just to help him personally stay on the right path in life.

  • @SlimShaddy54

Yeah I’m keeping him in for now but expect that situation will have to be resolved. We also have to keep in mind we will be minus 1 scholarship to finish punishment so I believe we can carry 14 in total.

KU has its most important offseason coming up in Self’s tenure. The portal hasn’t worked the last two years and we cannot afford another year where we don’t get the right guys

What is your rotation with this group? Who is running starting PG? Peterson? I feel like Bill will play him off the ball. So I think you really need a starting PG. I don’t imagine Peterson being the guy we initiate the offense with.

You’re going to see KU spend big bucks on a PG in the portal imo. And my hope is they go PG/Wing/Wing/Wing/C like they have done in the recent past. By far Bill’s most successful teams of recent memory have been that. 2018, 2020 and 2022 were all built around an interchangeable 3-wing lineup.

    • PG: Transfer - Elmarko
    • Wing: Peterson - Coit
    • Wing: Passmore - Mari
    • Wing: Transfer - Transfer (probably a more traditional PF type of guy in case we struggle against size)
    • C: Flory - Tiller

  • Ugh. It’s a bad year when we are dreaming of next season in the first week of March.

I think its best we give the ball to Peterson as much as possible and let him create offense, so I have him as the PG. I truly think that’s what needs to happen to unleash the offensive capability he will provide to this team.

    PG- Peterson- Jackson

    SG-TBD- Coit- McDowell- TBD

    Wing- TBD- Passmore- TBD

    PF/Wing- TBD- Tiller- Calderon

    C- Bidunga- TBD- Tiller

I think Self should go get the best combo/SG guard fit he can find to pair with Peterson. Make that backcourt un-guardable with another athlete that can score from all 3 levels. I think we need to be at least 6 deep in the two backcourt positions.

At wing, I think you find a starter with experience and find another development talent to pair with Passmore.

At the 4 spot, spend big to get the right fit. I also prefer a bruiser type that can do the dirty work- board/defend etc. If you have a healthy Tiller and Calderon makes it to campus you have two very different players but high-level athletic traits.

At the 5, simply find a veteran bruiser that can give you 5 fouls and hold his own on both ends.

    Those are my early thoughts

  • @bskeet i’ve been dreaming of football season since the November

  • My immediate concerns with the guys who may return from this year’s team.

Jackson- has lost close to a year of development due to injury. He said he’s bulked up physically and got to watch the game from a different view. Will he be full go by the time offseason workouts start? You really have no idea what lies ahead from him which makes it a bit uneasy to project anything. He was an exciting prospect that needed skill development to maximize his athletic profile.

Jamari McDowell- had some decent moments as a freshman but struggled when conference play came around. Showed some defensive promise at times. Didn’t seem to have a ton of skill on offense that we saw. Redshirted this year and given he was the odd man out in year 2 doesn’t inspire confidence he’s someone they plan to push into the rotation. He does seem like a good kid who’s stayed engaged as a teammate. Interested to hear if any sort of light bulb has come on for him this year.

Zach Clemence- injured early in the year and hasn’t returned since. Will he have an opportunity to stay or will he look to finish his career at at a more appropriate level where he might get to play and contribute more… TBD

Bryson Tiller- joined the team early at semester and has not been cleared to play due to injury. I do find it concerning especially if he’s not cleared by the time offseason work starts. He’s another that’s missed a year of playing. Self seems to love his skill set and what he could potentially be down the line. I guess an optimistic view would be that he could be a backup 4 man and reserve 5 man at times in year 1. TBD how good he will be next year.

Rakease Passmore- hasn’t played much as a freshman. Has good size and athleticism. Has shown some promise defensively and at times has been aggressive on offense getting to the rim. Perhaps he will be one that jumps up with an offseason here. His shooting splits are not flattering for projecting something…Really TBD.

Flory Bidunga- clearly the future at the 5 for us next year. A big offseason in the weight room and skill development will give him a chance to anchor the post for us next season. He’s a double double machine next yr.

Diggy Coit- will use his extra juco year and has been as advertised, an offensive spark plug with toughness that’s a liability on defense at this level. Perhaps he will sharpen his skills with a full offseason here since he was a late arrival to campus. A solid veteran bench piece that can win you games when matchups and his shot is falling.

Based on the rumor mill I would not expect Griffen or Storr to return.

Which leads me to the point of all this. What we have returning does not inspire confidence. Sure I see value to having a bunch of these guys setting the culture and expectations for the newcomers however when it comes down to business, we have just a few that we can even project will be important pieces of this team. There’s at least 2 guys that are really practice players at this level. If your trying to field a team around Peterson that can compete for championships you gotta up the talent and skill level and find the right FITS to compete. There’s no question that hasn’t been done the last two seasons relying on the portal for difference makers. So I’m very concerned we will grab a bunch of guys we think will be good here just to end up with buyers remorse once again. It’s a big offseason in my opinion. I truly hope the staff learns from the past two seasons and finds a way to turn it around through recruiting and finding an identity that can get this ball rolling again back to the KU standard. Anyone else worried?

  • Here is my biggest concern for Darryn , what I’m afraid of. That is there is a lot of people including myself to a degree, to many people have already set such high expectations for Darryn coming next year , that as good as he is he is not going to meet some of those expectations.

Now while the kid is a Stud , there are a lot of Studs playing the game in College and some Studs that have 2-3 years of College experience. I have read countless things people have said , and with the way the Season has played out I see things said like OH we need you Darry- -we need you now , come save us and so on. If he comes in and doesn’t get the things done that people are expecting then many will consider him being over rated bust , and that’s just not fair to Peterson.

Bottom line is no matter how good he is and he is dam good , but no matter how good he is, he is still what a 17-18 yr old Freshman getting ready to play his first minutes of power P-5 ball ? -What people need to remember is if he doesn’t get everything done that’s on peoples wish list like automatically taking us to the promised land doesn’t mean squat -he will already be carrying a ton of pressure on his shoulders trying to preform and knowing he is under the microscope and everybody watching waiting to see that SPECIAL play.

We have got to just temper our expectations right now- -don’t think he is a bust if he has a off game or half --or if he ends up not what in your mind us good enough- -That is one thing you don’t have to worry about - -he is good- --real good , but let’s let the kid play his game , he is going to do really good things BUT let’s hold off on the Super mans Cape for just a minute or two - -he STILL is a youngster, and even as good as he is-- it is still an adjustment.- -I just hope we keep a level head and if things fall short in a game or two, well everyone - -even Studs have off nights- -The Kid IS SPECIAL- - REAL SPECIAL but also there are other SPECIAL PLAYERS PLAYING THE GAME let this kid be a kid, he loves the game-- and oh ya WELCOME DARRYN glad you a Jay Hawk- - -ROCK CHALK

  • @BeddieKU23 what is wrong w/Tiller? He was doing 1 on 1 stuff at the beginning, right?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Tiller played for Overtime Elite which is an invitation only league for top high school players that Tiller was playing in. Tiller got injured over the summer (ankle) and decided to enroll early at KU and redshirt to rehab and be around the program. He should be practicing with the team at this point unless he’s had a setback at some point.

  • @BeddieKU23 Elmarko is close to being 100% barring a setback. Self said in January that Elmarko should be 100% by March and would begin full contact after the season was over. Elmarko should be able to go through a full off season.

Elmarko should to be the starter next season with Peterson playing off ball, or even playimg the wing. Peterson hasn’t been a lead guard since his freshmen year of high school soccer I doubt he’s going to play that role next season.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 I think Elmarko’s going to be my favorite Jayhawk next year. No pressure. Really really hope he gets back to 100%

  • Elmarko is 100% a top tier athlete assuming he fully recovers and didn’t lose explosion

He’s shown terrible in game awareness and can’t shoot so I’m struggling to grasp why we are so high on him.

The PG spot is where we should be hammering the portal……1, 3 and 4 spots will be wide open

If Self doesn’t attempt to bring in a dog and thinks Elmarko and diggy are enough….he’ll just continue to prove he can’t evaluate and build a good roster for 3 straight years

  • @Crimsonorblue22

Still been limited to that as of last update recently. It doesn’t sound like he’s done a whole lot so far

  • @Texas-Hawk-10

I’m not sure we can project Jackson as a starter but I remain hopeful he will be one of the 7 or 8 reliable players next year. I do agree he should be playing full time lead guard and where he played as a freshman was mostly due to the Morris situation. We shall see if they trust him to be the guy that takes over

  • Bill prefers two capable ball handlers on the floor at once. Elmarko will start next to Peterson is my prediction at this time. The roster is so far from complete there is really no way to accurately predict anything at this moment.

  • @dylans

I don’t think he’s gotten that in the last few years, it’s been Juan or disaster. Needs to be corrected this offseason for sure.

  • I wouldn’t bank on Elmarko starting coming back from that type of injury imo. If he can give us a solid 15-20 minutes I’d be fine with that.

  • I just want a Jersey kid with swag who stays positive, engaged and vocal while rocking cool glasses from the sideline to get lucky and have a healthy season. From a swag perspective, Elmarko seems to have it.
