Who would you keep for next year?

Keep: Furphy, Hunter
On the fence: KJ and Elmarko
The rest can go honestly
I agree with this. I think I would add McDowell to the ‘on the fence’ section though. He seems to show some flashes and wouldn’t mind keeping him around as a bench piece.
-
All these “terrible” players that some are ready to kick to the curb for leading KU to one of its most disappointing seasons in recent memory also beat 3 of the projected 1 seeds in the NCAA tournament. As in this horrible no good team has beaten almost all the top teams, what does that say about ncaa basketball?
-
For sure College Ball is down bad.

Juan isn’t leaving, so it’s kind of silly to think about.
Just pin this really. Unless something drastic happens its been already announced and decided upon
-
Regarding Juan, it’s Self’s job to finally have depth at the position. Gone 2 years without it. Philon coming in, not enough, go get yourself a guy that can also compete like Remy Martin provided. That’s what you need on this roster to complement Harris and you need to pay to get it. Heck get a 4th PG. Juan isn’t enough and a freshman no matter how good is unlikely to meet the standards.
-
@BeddieKU23 Don’t know that college ball is down as much as the number of players who have switched programs has created so many roster changes. This in turn creates a lack of cohesiveness at times for even the better teams. When a team has 5 or more players who have been together for 2 or more years, they know one another’s moves and fit together better.
-
@COHawk - agreed. Look at Houston with a senior heavy roster. They know their roles and every segment of the schemes.
-
I respect y’all who are down on KJ and Juan and I understand why you’d like to see better talent in those starting slots. That said, a much higher consideration for me is just how much I’ve grown to know and like them both. I mean, as college ball becomes an annual revolving door I really cherish the guys who stay and develop. It’s waaaaay more fun for me to root for those guys than strange new faces. I’m more invested in the vicissitudes of the season. It’s more fun to be a fan. So Juan and KJ are tip tier keepers on my wish list, moreso even than Hunter and Furphy.
-
Like, I don’t merely want the Hawks to win it all; I want KJ and Juan to win it all, lol.
-
In an article on KU in “The Athletic” today, Self said KU hasn’t shot well since the 2nd game of the season. Article also said “KU is shooting 24.2 percent from 3, which ranks 361st nationally during that time, according to Bart Torvik’s sorting tool. There are 362 teams in Division I college basketball.”
So, KU needs, what, 2-3 good shooters next year to create spacing and keep the defense out of the middle?

They did already!
KJ played 3-5 minutes total in the tourney and Juan rode the bench from about the 16 minute on in the second half of the title and every crucial run in games against creighton and providence.Because we won’t recruit better guards u will not see them win a title. If Juan is our starting pg there is zero chance. No player of remy’s caliber is coming to sit behind him and be the 6th man.
How all that came together is such luck for Self and he can’t even acknowledge it correctly. Self thinks he was some mastermind and proof Juan is good. Hey Bill you and the staff suck at talent evaluation lately even with having the portal to view guys who’ve played college ball.
You also suck at utilizing your players best abilities!
Kj inverted high low with Hunter
Hunter shooting the 3 at the top of the key with confidence
Juan needs to shoot the 3 I’ve begged it all year
Jamari getting a leash
-
I forgot about McDowell in my original post.
I’d keep him, too. Just need to figure out where his skills fit in.
And for those of you getting upset and hard nosed about Dajuan…it’s just an opinion thread. No need to derail it with facts!

To our teams detriment yes he is staying.
-
@dylans fair point but all those wins are at home in a down year in overall talent for CBB IMO. If the tournament was played at home or at least the first two rounds I like our chances a ton more. AFH is a thing lol
-
With who we already know is staying, think I’d like to see Juan, KJ, Hunt, Furphy and Mari realistically stay here. I feel like it’s tough to build a team with any continuity if you don’t have a few program guys on the roster. I really would like to see KJ go into an expanded Mitch Lightfoot type of roll.

Not sure about this premise who would we keep? We’re obligated to keep players aren’t we? Self just can’t yank a scholarship from Elmarko because he’s been a disappointment, right?
If it were something that we could decide whom to keep, would keep all of them. First half of the season muy bueno, 2nd half, mainly tied into injuries, no bueno. Still not our greatest team ever at full strength, but I’d be looking to add a piece so overwhelmed guys like Braun, Timberlake aren’t needed except for spare moments.

Well you would never hear that was the reason he would take his scholarship anyways they would find another reason if Staff didn’t want him back. Scholarships are on a year by year bases Self wouldn’t have to keep him on Scholarship if there was conflict or many reasons they could find not to extend it for the following yr I think.

If you pull a kid’s scholarship simply because the player underperformed, that absolutely destroys a coaches reputation in recruiting. In those situations, coaches will always help a player find another school first which is what Self does. It’s easier now with the portal, but even if player finds out their scholarship isn’t being renewed, that message will get out and spread quickly as well.
In theory, if someone like Elmarko decided to return to KU, and never put his name in the portal, but his scholarship was not renewed, that’s a bad look. Also in theory, If Elmarko put his name in the portal and KU fills out their roster, and then Elmarko decided he’d rather return, then he’d be out of luck and it wouldn’t be a bad look for KU because everyone did things the proper way and Elmarko would be out of luck on returning which has happened before as well to other players waiting for offers they thought would come, but never did.

Who would YOU keep is the premise. Simply an exercise for Bucketeers to voice their opinions.

I agree completely, basically I was trying to say was that Scholi’s are year by year so ANYTHING COULD happen, but agree it would be a pretty bad look on the School’s part

P5 schools have 4 year scholarships and have for quite awhile.

Looks like we’re still waiting to hear who’s gonna do some portaling.
Given our guard/wing acquisitions, Elmarko has to be thinking twice about leaving.
