"Never Again" - HCBS

  • There was a quote last night from one of the announcers that said they talked to coach about the roster and in particular how thin it was or its makeup and coach’s response was “Never Again” will he go into a season with a roster like this. It stuck out to me and made me think he is going to be extra motivated, even more than normal, to put together a dynamite roster each year going forward. Did anyone else catch this comment? Wanted to make sure I heard that right.

  • @RockkChalkk if I’m not mistaken we are short 3 scholarships this season with the investigation and it is showing up big time.

  • @RockkChalkk I feel like this is just fodder and stuff to write about.

He said it about Braun/Och team early…this past offseason he said he was revitalized and we are leveling up. Instead we are losing the big 12 and leveling down.

He can talk plenty but teams gotta win games

  • Fran was the one that said it. Having the scholarship reduction, a player on scholarship and red shirting, and the Morris situation have made this years roster what it is. They are still going to be a 2 or 3 seed in the tournament.

  • If we get into FF but no Big 12, I am cool.

  • And there were some things that fell through. Both Stanford guys wanted KU, but one got into grad school there (well done) and in the other case a current starter would’ve left had we taken him. That plus Udeh throwing a tantrum after saying he was staying then doing a 180. And we don’t need to rehash Terio since everyone agrees that was a major major screw up.

This team looks a hell of a lot different with Jones and Ingram playing alongside Hunter with KJ as the 6th man.

  • @FarmerJayhawk Woulda coulda shoulda….it didn’t come together that ways and that’s on Self.

Ingram did transfer but you saying kj as 6th man is comical…Bill will never have Juan or KJ come off the bench.

Ingram knew this and that’s why ultimately he didn’t come here. Bill plays favorites and it’s known in college bball circles. It bites him in the rear and rightfully so when he won’t play a higher ceiling player over a guy who’s in and knows his system but ceiling is lower.

I’m happier with these results than winning every game with Morris.

  • @AsadZ I don’t know - how much are tickets to the FF?

They play those games in cavernous arenas, so surprisingly not too expensive. Unless you want to purchase close tickets - but as @wissox would tell you, just get in the building and look for unused seats on stubhub that are closer to the action.

  • @kuballin10 it was going to happen, 100% had we gotten Ingram.

  • @FarmerJayhawk You can keep telling yourself that my man but that isn’t the truth.

First it was adidas held Self back then it was the ncaa case for his entire career other college coaches and those in high school circles know how he operates. He plays favorites and has the guys he values for whatever reason.

Juan and KJ are 1a and 1b on that list. He loves kj and heck so do I so I can’t blame him but thinking ingram was gonna force kj to the bench never would have happened

  • @dylans Championship games are always cheaper.

  • @kuballin10 A+ source

  • This is to be expected given the penalties from the investigation. It was a penalty to have fewer scholarships. It makes a team thin and is a significant disadvantage during the regular season and conference tournament.

The NCAA is surely feeling a bit more satisfied with their punishment with every rung of the ladder that we fall.

We need to stay healthy and positive about how this could play out in the tournament where depth is less significant.

  • @bskeet

This team has struggled badly, albeit on the road on the 2 day turnaround this season. While travel and playing on an opps floor won’t be the issue in the tournament, it’s not exactly any easier with all that comes with preparation for games. I’m not sure I can buy that March will be any different then what are seeing now.

While I’m hopeful the longer time-outs in the tournament and some other details may make a difference I don’t think it does enough to mask the fact this team only has 5 good enough players. The bench again has been a non factor and guys we were expecting to be consistent producers off the bench have not looked like they can step up.

Self has a month to figure out if there’s any other switches left to turn on

  • @BeddieKU23 I wouldn’t be shocked if this team made the final four. But I do think it is rather unlikely. They just aren’t that good. Their flaws are very apparent and it doesn’t appear that there is any real solution or counter to help mask them. We thought Furphy could come in and spread the floor if he could knock down some shots. He did. It didn’t make us demonstrably better. We thought if Juan shot the ball more and was more aggressive it could open things up for everyone else. He has, we are still losing.

I think a lot of people see this as an experienced team because we have 3 seniors and a junior starting. But this is still Hunter’s first year at Kansas, and while it may feel like Kev has always been a hawk, this is only year 2 of him.

The leaders of this team really need to be Juan and KJ and they play like leaders in that they give their all every game and attempt to lead by example but I’m not sure guys like Hunter, Nick, and even Elmarko have really bought into the Bill Self culture of what a winning team has to do. Kev bought in right away last year and was rewarded with a bigger role this year but his injury (and anytime he plays bad tbh) really kills the overall demeanor of this team.

I’ve hinted at this in other posts but I think Hunter is maybe our biggest bust (outside of Terio obviously). I think he’s soft. I think Bill thinks he’s soft too but doesn’t have another option. This whole team is soft if we are honest. When is the last time this team was faced with any kind of adversity and rose to the challenge?

I could be wrong, but I feel like we’ve had teams in the past go into games short handed and actually come out MORE fired up and ready to compete. I think it’s telling that we all knew this game on Monday was a loss waiting to happen and the team seemed to as well. I love the transfer portal for the freedom it gives players but it does put a premium on building and maintaining culture. I think some of these guys are just too used to losing. They’ve done it for years at other schools and don’t realize what it means to compete at the highest level. I’m not saying they don’t care or they don’t try, but they haven’t been exposed to what it looks like to be a part of a high level, championship type, team. The chiefs aren’t in the super bowl every year because they have the 22 most talented players on the field. And other teams don’t make it for lack of effort.

  • @FarmerJayhawk Talk to his Uncle and get back to me about it….

  • @kuballin10 regardless you told me he sucks and we shouldn’t want him so who cares?

  • @FarmerJayhawk My analysis of his game has zero to do with our discussion so don’t redirect the conversation

You said they were gonna bench KJ for him and I called you out. You asked for a source trying to bluff and I gave it to you.

I’m getting more connected and I can tell you people think Self is HOF but he has his faults ie his pets

There is no way KJ was going to the bench for Ingram if anything lineup would have been

    Juan

    Kev

    Ingram

    Kj

    Hunt

  • @kuballin10 why not? It’s kind of your thing to beat up arguments you imagine people make. I trust my source on this entirely. I don’t make stuff up here regardless of your opinion.

There drama from other people involved on KU’s end that Ingram camp wouldn’t be privy to, as I said last spring

  • @benshawks08

Perhaps we don’t have the kind of leader we needed this year. Self has mentioned earlier in season that nobody separated themselves. We see it pop up on the road the most it looks like. Who’s taking control when things are not going well and need to regroup and refocus.

We can all see the flaws with this team. I’m not going to pile on, I certainly have my opinions, but they won’t help anything. We’ll see if anything has changed Saturday. If not, we’ll see if the week off until the home Texas game changes something. We’ll see if the coaches and players can overcome the adversity currently in their way.

  • @BeddieKU23 Can’t overcome adversity if you’re never faced with it. Hopefully this stretch gives them something to grow from. If we get everyone healthy we could still be a monster of a 3-4 seed.

Still I’d be more worried about getting upset by a lower seed than being able to hang with the big dogs.

  • Nick Timberlake looks the part - he is quick and can handle the ball well. His defense is wretched though, he constantly leaves the corner three open. If Nick could buy in more on defense it would make him more playable. DeJuan needs someone to take the ball handling duties from time to time - Elmarko is too offensively challenged to play much right now, but looks fine in short spurts. Roster construction is what it is given the circumstances - no depth again.

  • @dylans if Elmarko would get aggressive he’d be fine. We don’t have a single player on offense that can pull up and hit a shot off the bounce. He can do that and has several times just doesn’t do it often enough. Nick at times has soon he can make athletic plays, just need consistency.

Elm has swished several and passed up more and could add sorely needed bench points. Bench points were 2 yesterday.

  • Johnny is not just a scorer at the collegiate level. His nine boards were a difference maker. He is not getting torched on their end. Hunter looked very good. KJ sat with foul trouble but returned with three of his quick at the rim makes. Kevin just has to shoot closer to 50%. He just has to. We had 25 total rebounds against Tech but won the stat yesterday. Jamari had another offensive board yesterday which is his specialty along with his specialty of playing low minutes. I saw we returned to having a double digit deficit in the first half and mainly because we can’t buy a trey. I didn’t really miss it. Juan hit some more underhand lay ups and that seems to make him kinda giddy. Nick is fifty/fifty on whether he turns it over or misses a trey. It is not for lack of trying. He would be a kamakazi downhill into the chest driver if asked and would take charges if he could get in front of their guards more often. Since Hunter has doink a threeitis I bet Parker would chuck up as many if asked.

  • @Zabudda I’d say Furph is a scorer, just not in isolation situations. But that seems to be the only thing missing from his offensive game.

Agreed that his defense has also been notably improving and he even notched 3 steals in the OU game. It seems like he can still get hunted a bit when his man has the ball, but he is not much of a liability in off ball situations.

I worded my Furph blurb wrong and meant to say what you did,
