Exhibition Game Tonight

  • @BShark sorry man. I just dont like Hunter and it bothers me that he is the focal point of our identity. Maybe i want him to fail a little so people stop identifying us as Hunters team.

  • @approxinfinity said in Exhibition Game Tonight:

. We cant run with Hunter either and we dont have a shot blocker / plus rebounder to pair with Hunter.

Cmon! Didn’t you see the twin tower lineup with Hunter and Clemence at one point! 🙂

  • @approxinfinity he’s definitely a team guy

  • I want this to be Mccullars team.

  • @rockchalkjayhawk ha just got to it

  • @approxinfinity How about the HAM team? Harris, Adams, and McCullar.

And HD aka High-Def is really Lo-Fi.

  • I’m just finishing up the game as well. Halfway thru the second half.

My impression so far: hmmm. We got work to do.

Furphy with a second half start! I think he looks smooth-ish. Just young and dumb. But actually not that dumb. Looks like he fits in. His shooting form doesn’t look broke. That’s a good thing. And he’s way out of shape. Hard to judge his foot speed.

I’m still waiting to see something from Elmarko.

Oh jeez, we got walk ons in the game…

  • @BShark We don’t usually have trouble dropping 80 plus in any exhibition game playing a lose rotation. Last years team dropped over 90.

  • I think Mccullar has the highest ceiling to be the hero we need this season. I do think we have some depth that we would do well to develop and hope we continue to roll the young guys out a bit

  • Post game said Kevin reinjured his neck, couldn’t go long in 2nd half.

  • @approxinfinity but it’ll be fine, soft tissue injury.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I saw him grabbing his neck a few times like it was bothering him. He produced in spite of that.

  • @approxinfinity said in Exhibition Game Tonight:

The problem I have rooting for Kevin is that there is nothing about his game that’s easy to watch. It’s all like pulling teeth with him. Of course I want him to do well, but he just ain’t smooth.

  • HCBS said that McCullar almost did not play today. Watching Gameday Live

  • @rockchalkjayhawk hes holding out on us

  • Looks pretty smooth to me. 4 threes so far with a busted neck

  • HCBS says McCullar will be backup point guard for now when Juan is out as Elmarko is thinking too much. He thought Furphy looked good based upon practicing once in 3 weeks.

  • All right. Done watching. Winning’s good.

I don’t know why this is the first thing that comes to mind, but why is Clemence gonna red shirt? Im sure we could use him at some point. Seems like everybody is peeing on Parker as a backup C.

If Self said Elmarko is still thinking too much, that would explain things. He looks like a zombie out there. Not standing out. Just fitting in. Not bad, not good. Really looking forward to seeing him get better as the season progresses.

I still think Furphy will break out as an exciting player at some point.

Harris has not been aggressive at all. Wonder why?

Hunter. Hmm. I never saw him play at Michigan, so I have no expectations. As another said, if they double and triple him, somebody’s gotta cut or make a 3 for us to succeed.

I hope this somehow grows into a hard nosed Bill Self team. I do see the hi-lo making a come back!

  • Anyone want to call me out on my thoughts that uk will beat us?

I was crazy and Juan will own their freshman ect….funny how not even beating d2 Kansas school by 20 points and being down to a fringe top 25 team all game has changed tunes

Bill needs to learn to get athletes who can shoot not the opposite.

Khalif Battle and many others he could have had and kept Udeh and Zuby.

Next level….try regression year and 3rd in the big 12.

When ur pg can’t shoot and doesn’t look to score, ur 2 guard can’t guard or shoot, your 4 man can’t do anything but dunk and floaters and ur 5 is lallygagging up and down the floor every possession along with being a volume James harden type scorer….u ain’t any good

The second turd bucket was kicked off I knew this was a problem and Bill’s interview last week confirmed it even more.

We ain’t that good I’m thinking sweet 16 tops

  • No one will accuse this team of being high-octane on offense.

  • Slight box score second half disappointment:

    FHS 32, Kansas 30

  • I had already tempered expectations big time after the Morris debacle, but I’ve lowered them even more after this pair of warm up games. We’ll see what this team can develop into as they have a lot to work on, perhaps more so than any Self team he’s had. I’m excited to see how much this group can improve but it may be rocky.

  • If we are a top 5 team come seasons end, Bill will be a Coach of the Year candidate. Im ready to lower expectations and enjoy the process.

  • @kuballin10 Bill wouldn’t play Battle much, would be a Remy situation on steroids. Temple kicked him off the team.

You’d rather have Udeh and Zuby than HD? Then we really wouldn’t score unless we got a scoring four and another scoring guard instead. Not sure who we were even on and could of landed that fits the bill? You can’t just pick and choose players you want in the portal.

Not the #1 team in the country right now but there is time to get better and gel as a team.

  • @kjayhawks they must have taken a clue from the football crowd. Did it start out full and then slowly dwindle to about 20% capacity?

  • @kuballin10 Hmmm… Did you copy that post from 2022, just change the names a bit? You’re going to conclude all that based on two practice games? OK. If you’d been here in 2012 you’d probably have written the same thing when we nearly won the national championship.

“Bill needs to learn to get athletes who can shoot, not the opposite.” Just about the dumbest line I’ve seen, and I’ve been a bucketeer from the day @approxinfinity got this great page going. But keep up with your sorry analysis of KU hoops. We like it when you’re wrong.

  • Last dysfunctional foster like this was 2018. 8 losses that season. Who is taking the over on 8 losses?

  • @approxinfinity I’d guess something like 24-7 in the regular season. Maybe I will be happily surprised. Definitely some development that needs to happen.

Guessing that gets us on the 2 seed line.

  • Once these guys figure out who the leader on the floor is, they will be fine. Last year was easy with Jalen taking over.

  • Going back, first 6 possessions were great. If Self runs real stuff all game, mostly just feeding Hunter we probably put up triple digits. At the very least 90. That doesn’t help us long term though, we obviously know Hays can’t hang with Hunter so it was more interesting to try other stuff.

  • @COHawk

Think Kev is that guy as long as healthy

  • @BeddieKU23 said in Exhibition Game Tonight:

    Kev hype was legit.

  • Looks like KU has 4 players and a bunch of jags. Will be interesting to see what Self can get out of this group.

  • Might be although I don’t think he likes that role. I think Juan could be the one but he isn’t sure that the others see him as the alpha. To become the team we hope this group will become, this (a strong leader) has to happen.

  • @dylans said in Exhibition Game Tonight:

Timberlake missed evaluation was big. Looks like the 7th man on this team to me. On the bright side maybe Bill stops looking at midmajor guards in the portal.

  • @approxinfinity said in Exhibition Game Tonight:

These announcers are absolutely ridiculous with the Dickinson superlatives. This guy isnt Jokic, this guy is not a POY candidate. Its great to dream, I guess.

He is a consensus first team AA. Of course he is a POY candidate.

  • @wissox Nah national title team I was on Remy over Juan which proved true but Dave completely smacked me in the face. I liked David the person but as a player felt he held us back. Man he couldn’t have proved me more wrong all while on a bum wheel.

Self builds the team in just grading out what we are seeing and so far beating in state commuter school by 18 and the Illini game is atrocious.

  • @approxinfinity I’ll take the under on that bet, this team is more like the 2019 Dedric Lawson 10 loss team than the 2018 FF team that was loaded with NBA Guards that could shoot. That 2019 team is one of the worst in my lifetime which says a lot about Kansas basketball and how good we have been. I’m personally not super worried at this point. We will find out a lot vs UK

  • @BShark We could play fast and if he didn’t get Hunter he should have landed top wings in the portal.

I’m starting to see how Michigan was so bad with Hunter. He puts up the stats but when u go watch their ncaa tourney game he is a poor athlete and awful defender.

With Doke we had legit defense his last year because he was such a beast. Hunter can’t get more than 2 inches off the floor and is so slow side to side we can’t stop a fringe top 25 team from scoring at will or having open shots all game

  • @BShark This is my proof we ain’t got the horses. Can’t just roll it out and get buckets. Bill can call every set he wants but they don’t always work and guys just have to make plays.

Uconn had athletes and shooters and could flat out play.

We got 1 shooter who’s a possible starter but can’t guard worth crap and then everyone else is lucky if they are 30-32%.

Squad Self built I thought would look good but man we are baddddd

  • @COHawk Juan is a great kid but he ain’t that. Ur asking him to be Frank or devontae and he doesn’t have even half of their offensive skill set.

Juan is the hockey assist, pass it around the perimeter guy, and gets the nice assist in transition but he’s the most overhyped player from Bill I’ve ever seen. Traylor and Morningstar have been surpassed.

This team needs a Frank not a Juan.

Bill was enamored with Hunter and I read in here we’d run plays like for Jokic and lol that’s comical now. Tough to do when u got 4 other dudes who can’t shoot and no one guards out to the three point line they just sag in the paint and dare us to go 4/21

  • Alpha Kevin is the only way. F the naysayers. Own it Kev.

  • Wasn’t attempting to compare him to Frank, and I don’t think a leader needs to be a beast offensively. Interesting how some were ready to clear a space for new title trophy and banner a few months back, but after two exhibition games are bashing almost every. player.

Okay, you are right, we will miss the tournament. Damn!

  • Might have to take a year off the boards. Between the boards, twitter and the discord server it’s a lot.

  • Look around the country, who has an insane roster? Tennessee maybe? No one is blowing me away.

  • @BShark

We’ll have to wait to see what others look like with so much turnover. Illinois looked solid but Underwood is known to underperform there.

Duke’s core 4 that came back is going to be difficult to beat.

Purdon’t has the behemoth and their core back.

Nova could look significantly different with Moore healthy and a solid transfer haul.

Marquette returned a lot especially their backcourt duo.

I remain hopeful this bunch will be molded into a team that we are accustomed too but I’m concerned we just don’t have the right roster construction to get there.

So far the brightest spot is seeing Kevin ascend into the role that Agbaji and Jalen held the last couple seasons & has been handed off to him. Kev gets it, gives max effort every single play and his perimeter shot does look improved. The guys will follow his lead and hopefully we can get iron sharpening iron at some point.

When we talk about margin for error on teams, at least so far, this one appears to about as razor thin as it gets

  • Is self a hall of fame coach, yes. Will this team be a 1,2,3 seed, yes. Will they be one of the teams that if they get lucky and the bracket falls right make a final four and win, yes. Are they super underwhelming for the hype, yes. Did self not quite get the right pieces this year and make some bad decisions on who he went after, yes. I think it’s okay to be critical of the team and be frustrated by the early indications this is not a top 5 team unless a couple people really go beyond what is most likely to happen. Could elmarko figure it out, and be a lottery pick guy and Adam’s could take the next step, yes. Early on this doesn’t look like a special group but we will see
