NCAA NON- KU GAMES

  • Carr just yeeted Tejas back to Austin

  • 25-28 FTs. That’s pretty remarkable. Do they practice those at UM???

Jim Larranaga is a bit underrated as a coach.

He’s a really good coach and good guy. UM has made adjustments - UT hasn’t responded…

This is why they can’t stick with Terry.

And yeah, Miami was right there with us last year. Then we went on a banana land heater and the Miami players were SHOOK, basically quit running Jim’s sets.

  • When Miami’s big guy went out with 4 fouls. The were able to really disrupt UT’s offense. They were never able to run a set and it took them out of their rhythm and they never got it back. This was actually a pretty entertaining game. Alot of fouls though

  • Memories! No KU in their way!

  • Does UT officially hire Terry? I feel like that’s just not the UT thing to do. I’ve thought that all along. Even tho he probably earned it

  • @BShark I think KU having a core of guys that had been around for 3-4 years or 6 lol with Mitch was huge. David and Jwil were the lone top 50 recruits on that team.

  • Glad to see Texas lose, I would’ve been fine to extend the B12s FF and title game streak but F*** Texas ride on out shorthorns.

Get old stay old. Thankfully, we are targeting old in the portal.

  • @BShark experience pays off I think, a ton of upperclassmen on these final four teams. This year I think our starting 5 was good enough at times to make it but the bench was just full of swings and misses unfortunately.

  • Maybe we should have anticipated this year’s chaos given that the NCAA granted an extra year due to COVID two years ago… It made the mid majors older and more experienced. The majors still recruited top talent and even some transfers, but the teams that kept the core group, doubled-down on chemistry, and gained a year of experience were able to neutralize some of the powerhouses despite the raw talent differential… Does that make sense?

  • This years final four looks like a crappy preseason tournament that no one in their right mind would attend

  • @dylans Except that is a pretty absurd prejudice to have considering how exciting all these games have been. F4 should be a blast

  • @cragarhawk I hope they steal Tang away from KSU lol.

But my guess is they just keep Terry. Sort of makes sense for everyone. He did a good job. Low risk move for the AD. Keeps the roster as in tact as possible (though I think they’ll still lose 6+ guys). Keeps the five star guys going to UT I think. I’m sure they’ll get some guys in the portal who can play.

But again, I hope they call Tang with a blank checkbook.

Finally, super super super unlikely scenario I want to throw out. But Calipari to UT after a negotiated buyout with UK for everyone to move on. Cal brings his superstar class with him to Texas. Kentucky starts a new era after getting Nate Oats or Scot Drew or Jerome Tang or someone like that. This only happens if UT wants to do something stupid and splashy. So not entirely impossible lol.

I think its awesome. Like what storylines. So many firsts! As long as UConn doesn’t win it all everyone should really enjoy this. Pretty unbelievable.

  • @Kcmatt7 - Apparently UT has hired Rodney Terry for their coach. Thoughts?f

  • @Gorilla72 I think the AD is a smart man lol. Low risk hire. If Rodney doesn’t work out it’s fine because “he earned it.”

From a purely basketball standpoint I think Terry was coaching one of the oldest teams in basketball. You could roll the ball out with that group and they’d win 20 games with no coach. I’m not sure this is a good evaluation of his talent.

Will be interesting to see if he can do it again next season.

  • @mayjay Yes I’m prejudiced. If it’s not KU basketball, to hell with it!

I don’t watch very many basketball games that don’t involve KU. I figure there are only so many hours I get to live, KU gets 99% of my basketball hours. The chiefs get 99% of my football viewership. I only have so many hours available to use on entertainment, I’m not wasting any on something I draw no enjoyment from. - I’ve only watched 2 tournament games this year. Some people live and breathe basketball, I live and breathe KU basketball.

  • @Kcmatt7

Losing a ton too. He will have to prove it again but he certainly earned it after the season they had

  • @Kcmatt7 It would be like us hiring Norm. Hate it. But also I love it because eff Texas.

  • @BShark said in NCAA NON- KU GAMES:

@Kcmatt7 It would be like us hiring Norm. Hate it. But also I love it because eff Texas.

Yea I mean similar to Norm, he had his shot. Texas theoretically should be able to hire almost anyone. Go get your guy.

I wouldn’t be thrilled as a UT fan at all.

  • @Kcmatt7 Yep. I’m getting a WEIRD amount of hate on twitter for not liking this move.

  • @dylans You are my twin.

  • @Kcmatt7 I’m definitely in the anyone but UConn camp right now. Kinda want FAU to win just because.

@BShark I wonder if the Terry hire is as much a push as anything. Like are there any real splashy hires out there right now? Who could Texas get right now that would be really good? Maybe their guy just isn’t out there right now so might as well keep this rolling and take the good PR while still keeping an eye out for the next guy. Give Terry two years and see what happens. Maybe the coaching market will have a few more superstar hires out there by then.

  • @benshawks08 Without having any real knowledge of the situation, I assume you’re right. They likely called around about guys they were interested in. My assumption is that the price to get “their” guys made it a high risk hire, and when you have a freebie hire right in front of you, you don’t make a high-risk hire.

This was a job security hire from the AD. Which is fine. Everyone else on this board would probably make that same decision in that situation.

  • @benshawks08 I mean they could do worse. Terry beat KU twice, Beard has 3 wins against KU in 5 years. I wouldn’t be over the moon about this hire as Texas, but it could work out. I’d take Rodney over Norm any day of the week, but thankfully KU is not likely hire from within.

  • I probably won’t watch much. Like others, not seeing UConn win another would be nice.

Uconn probably feels neglected by media as well. They will probably win their 5th NC this next weekend, all since 1999. But you don’t hear the name UConn too often.

If I had to pick a team I’d pick Miami as I have really grown to appreciate Jim Larranaga as a coach. He made his mark with George Mason, ironically by beating UConn in 2004.

Speaking of Miami, 2 teams, 50 miles apart in a non-basketball hotbed is pretty remarkable for that city.

Speaking of Miami, I’ll be there for a beach vacation a few days after the FF!

  • @BShark I get the argument of “what more could he have done to get the job?” So I understand both sides of it.

The KU fan in me thinks the Texas job is a great job and every year you have a mediocre coach leading that program is a missed opportunity. There is really no reason UT isn’t competing for a national title every few years. So to me you better think Terry is the guy.

UT fans probably don’t care though. And then there are some other optics at play for the AD. Like firing a black coach who “proved” he could do the job and hiring a white guy to replace him. Not exactly the best way to keep your job as an AD. So I get why he got the job.

  • @wissox I like Larranaga too. He’s old like me and obviously preaches free throw shooting. I don’t know if I’ll watch any of the FF, but Go Canes.

I’m planning on watching REAL basketball though - KU Women in the WNIT FF.

  • @wissox I view UConn as kind of the anti-KU. Where KU has the consistency, UConn has the titles. Their down years can be pretty down.

KU’s lowest win total since 99 is 21 (in the 20-21 year). UConn has had 11 (ELEVEN!!) seasons where they didn’t reach that mark in that same time frame.

But they have 4 titles and we have 2 (boy that second one helps!). Also, I find it interesting that they’ve only been to the Final Four 5 times (now 6). Meaning when they get there they tend to win the whole thing. They certainly seem on track to do just that again this year. Comparatively, KU has 16 final fours overall winning it all 4 times. KU has been to the final four 5 times since 99, winning it all twice of course.

Was it just HEM who wanted to trade resumes with UConn or were there more on here that would prefer their recent history to ours?

  • I enjoy the entire season. Some only value the last 6 games. To each their own.

  • Funny I became a fan of KU when I was a kid after KU beat UConn. I’ll be rooting for the other 3 teams to beat them again.

  • The Athletic has an absolutely brilliant article about Dan Hurley. Makes me cheer for him even if I still don’t like UConn because I got so sick of Jim “sour face” Calhoun.

Funny how our grudges stick around, ain’t it?

  • @benshawks08 hanging banners is so nice. And definitely what every team strives for every season. I think I might lean HEM’s way on that.

But I will say there would be some hard seasons to watch in that arc of a story… if you’re rewarded every 5-6 years with a banner tho? Idk. It’s tough.

People often think Self has underperformed in post season. And it has weight. But it’s all what perspective you look at it. He’s the winningest coach here in post season I believe. Probably regular season too. Hard to argue the methods either way.

KU’s been to 6 Final Four’s since then. 2002, '03, '08, '12, '18, and '22. The KU-UConn debate is a good one because there’s valid points for both schools about which one has been more successful over the past 25 years.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 Thanks for the edit. Guess I can’t count.

  • I’m rooting for SDSU because I think they were probably the other team robbed in 2020 and Miami because I like Larranaga as a coach. I don’t have anything against FAU. UConn however…

  • @bskeet What happened to SDSU in 2020?

  • @benshawks08 More titles combined with more really down seasons vs. less titles but and all but written in stone guarantee of being ranked and in the dance every season. That’s the choice between us and them. We are SO USED TO WINNING that when the inevitable day comes that we can’t even be considered on the bubble I’m afraid we’re really going to melt down if this whole social media thing is still happening. But if that day comes a year removed from a NC, maybe it’s easier to swallow?

As goofy as it sounds, I would rather be KU than UConn. Reasons? 1. Tradition 2. BlueBlood status 3. AFH 4. KU’s contribution to sports in general. 5. KUBuckets is better than HuskeyBuckets 6. UConn sounds like you con.
    7. Our campus is better 8. Our girls are better 9. Google Earth was invented in Lawrence 10. We never had Jim Calhoun.

  • @wissox said in NCAA NON- KU GAMES:

They were 30-2 and ranked 6th, and 6th in Kenpom. Good team.

  • @wissox said in NCAA NON- KU GAMES:

@bskeet What happened to SDSU in 2020?

SDSU and Dayton are the two teams I would’ve been curious about in the 2020 tournament. Dayton especially because they were tracking to be a 1 seed that year.

  • @Kcmatt7 I mean they wouldn’t necessarily have to “fire” him tho right? Isn’t that kinda part of why you have the interim tag.

Another question. Is UT kind of backed into a different corner here? Guy just won the conference tournament and took his team to the E8 while wearing the interim tag and basically getting it thrust upon him at the last minute thru unforeseen circumstances. If they don’t give him the job, who else is really going to want it? “You mean this wasn’t good enough for UT under the circumstances?”

Any other interested party may be thinking that way and not want the pressure of that atm. UT may not honestly have many other options right now, and probably no better ones

  • Remember Texas has 2 big recruits signed right now. They haven’t wavered and this move could solidify them joining them.

Terry clearly connected with this group and coached his but off so it’s hard to say he didn’t at least earn this for now. With the way basketball is turning into a 1 yr stop and shop for everyone, they can always find someone else next yr

  • @wissox I’m rooting for Miami too because of Jim Larranaga. Just seems like a good guy. Players seem to love him, so that’s good enough for me.

They gave us a heck of a game last year in the Regional final too, so… “Go Canes” or whatever they say.

  • @DanR Charlie Moore’s last hurrah…

  • @mayjay Oh yeah. Up Chuck! 5 points! I just looked up the box score and forgot how much we ended pulling away after being down at the half.

  • @DanR I remember it well like I was there. Oh yeah, I was there!

  • @wissox up really high, right?
