Who would ever replace Self?

@nuleafjhawk said in Who would ever replace Self?:
Jerome Tang. He could be Coach of the Year at two Kansas schools.
I don’t want a cheater like Tang: https://twitter.com/Sully20201/status/1632821004572688385/photo/1

@Kcmatt7 you put alot into that. Idk If I know too many of them. But Nice work. I don’t think atm I’m interested in Otz or Hoiberg.
Trying to be overly optimistic that Self hangs out way longer than he has said he wants to coach

ya , he has said he doesn’t want to Coach for that long period
-
@Jethro I don’t do twitter, but it was tongue in cheek anyway. I don’t think you could ever wipe the purple stain off of a coach who had been at K-State.
-
The answer to the original question : whoever we want.

That is really just scratching the surface. And I think Self has 5 more years. By then who knows who moves up the list.
Other names that could be on the list by then:
- Bob Richey is 39 years old and doing a great job at Furman.
- Robert Jones is 44 years old and is primed for a bigger job. At Norfolk State currently
- Darian DeVries is 48, he’s done a great job at Drake.
- Richie Riley at South Alabama is 40. And let’s just say that the South Alabama staff is willing to do what it takes to win.
- Mark Madsen at Utah Valley is due to get a better job. Age 47
- Speedy Claxton is off to a great start at Hofstra. That is his Alma Mater so he may never leave. Age 45.
- Matt Langel - Colegate - age 46. 5 consecutive Conf championships in Patriot league.
- Eric Henderson at South Dakota State has done well. Age 42.
- Dana Ford - age 39. Done well at Missouri State.
@Jethro is pretty much correct though. I do tend to think we will get one of our top choices.

No KU alums?
-
I shouldn’t be asked this question. I was TOTALLY pissed when we hired Self. I’m like - “This is KANSAS! We need somebody top tier!”
-
@Crimsonorblue22 I don’t think there’s anyone accomplished enough right now to warrant serious consideration.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 I would personally never be in favor of hiring a KU grad to do the job. I think it makes it too hard to fire them if you need to.
Georgetown should have fired Ewing three seasons ago.

Don’t think we have to worry about it for another 5-7 years

Ha, we already had that discussion in another thread. oddly i can’t find it now, and i think i started it!

He’s innocent unless in one of those calls he said, “Are we cool?”
lol

I’ve already accepted the future position.
I promise not to hit my wife/girlfriend.
I promise not to hit or spit on any players.
I promise not to say racially-disqualifying comments to anyone on the planet.
I promise to never ever say to anyone, “Are we cool?”
I promise not to loan a recruit money so he can attend a family member’s funeral.
I promise not to run zone except on occasion.
I promise I will recruit on the East Coast, West Coast, South, North, and Midwest!

Nobody thinks it would be a good idea to have a guy like Case taking first hand tutelage from CS be kind of a coach in waiting?

I like Case but if he is the plan I hope he would get some time as HC at another school first.
-
@BShark ya I hadn’t really thought of it like that. Good point
-
I see the point above too… having a KU alum is terrific if it’s a slam dunk hire and you get a CS or someone that can become that in a lil time. Because we have this tradition of not having a revolving door on the program coaching wise(which I love). But if it doesn’t work, you don’t wanna be stuck with them for years too long over not wanting to fire an alumni
-
@FarmerJayhawk we can’t turn the keys over to AFH to somebody who doesn’t love our place like we do! Self always says he’s blessed or lucky to be the caretaker of this historic place.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 we haven’t hired a KU grad since Dick Harp, so no reason to force it
-
Kansas head coach Jerome Tang
-
Kansas head coach Scott Drew
-
Kansas head coach CHRIS BEARD
-
@FarmerJayhawk there’s a new show, “Farmer wants a wife”. City ladies head to the country looking for a farmer for a hubby, is it you? Wed on fox.
-
@BShark no on all of them!

Nasty work from me there. I almost kept going but figured that was naughty enough lol.
-
At least u left out gregggg
-
@Crimsonorblue22 hehe I think that would make my current lady friend angry
-
@FarmerJayhawk good to hear though! You back in KS yet? Waiting til end of school yr?
-
Top tier winners who seem to be decent people, like Self, Roy, Dean Smith, Jay Wright, Billy Donovan, Mark Few, Bennett maybe… those coaches who players would run through fire for are rare as hell. Crazy lucky to have a few like that at KU.
There are lots of good guy coaches who aren’t winners, and lots of winners who are a-holes. These coaches are all salesmen, so it’s hard to tell from their pitch, but the people they leave behind can let you know who is a decent dude.
It’s interesting to follow the upstart guys that get the big gig after a run in the tourney with a mid major. Like Self did at Illinois after Tulsa. Shaheen Holloway might be a guy like that. See how he does at Seton Hall, then nab a guy like that. If his current team howls with anger, then that’s the guy. Did anyone care at VCU when Shaka left for Texas? I doubt it.
-
What about Aaron Miles?
-
@Crimsonorblue22 my current lease expires at the end of July so I’ll head back then!

He’s dirty, a cheater, and a liar. Any success he has is tainted. He buys players.
Oh wait. That’s what THEY say when reminded of our complete dominance.
One angle to explore concerning Tang and COY. He was able to make the biggest numbskull fans in history to stop saying “F KU” every time Sandstorm came on. The Pied Piper has nothing on him.

That shouldn’t be a prerequisite though. Roy came here with no head coaching experience and that turned out fine. Obviously that’s not a guarantee of success, but a lack of head coaching experience shouldn’t preclude someone either if they have other qualities.
There’s not much out there now in regards to coaches with KU ties, either as a former player or coach out there. In the NBA, Jacque Vaughn and Aaron Miles are the possible options, Rex Walter’s is in the NBA now, but struggled as a college coach at San Francisco. At the college level, Jeremy Case and Evan Manning are the only possible options at this point. Tad Boyle and Jerod Haase haven’t done enough in their current jobs to merit any serious consideration.
I’d say you find someone who has ties to any of the bluebloods because those are the people who are going to understand the pressure of coaching at a place like Kansas. That’s part of why Roy worked despite having zero ties to KU prior. He came from a blue blood and understood what it takes to be successful at a blue blood program.
I would look for someone who has ties to a modern day blue blood like KU, UNC, Duke, Kentucky, Gonzaga, Arizona, UConn, Villanova, or another program that’s had a lot of success over the 30 or so years.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 most of them that were good retired last yr. old farts. New blue bloods stink, plus nova. Cal, Few?

I’m not talking about Few, Wright or those coaches specifically, but people from their trees that have connections to those schools. Tommy Lloyd for example from the Mark Few tree. Scott Drew is another person also starting to develop an impressive coaching tree as well. This is why someone like Evan Manning could be an option someday. Played here and currently an assistant under Mark Few at Gonzaga. That’s what I mean by connections to a current blue blood program.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 i guess I’d rather they be from our tree. Just me.
-

There’s not much on the KU tree right now to think that’s a realistic option at this point.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 well, maybe 5-6 yrs down the rd. I wasn’t thinking about Evan. Still like Miles, Jacque, Case seems to be doing really well.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 I don’t see Miles or Vaughn going down to the college level. I don’t really care that much if Self’s successor has KU ties or not, I want a coach who who’s going to win at a high level at KU.
-
Jacque just got the Nets job with a new contract so he is out.
-
@BShark said in Who would ever replace Self?:
Kansas head coach Scott Drew
I’d vomit myself to sleep but he’s the one coach that’s elevated his program to KU’s level in the conference. His x’s and o’s will never compare but he recruits, develops and wins. He’s basically the only name I would even think of currently.
-
Self at the end of the day probably can steer the AD in the direction he needs to go when it’s time. I’m sure Self will have the best guess who could lead them
-
@BShark @approxinfinity - Ban this dude forever please.
-
@BeddieKU23 I would quit watching. Just like I did when his Drew’s twin brother was at WSU.
-
Guess it won’t be Calipari -
Lol… so many UK fans thought they had it made signing him into perpetuity… now they feel like suckers!
-
@BeddieKU23 the whiniest coach in our league? Brings a tape to show Fran we get the calls in AFH? That guy? He has the best backcourt in America. What would Self do with that? I think he’s slipped a lil since Tang left, the ’s. Remember when he stuck his head in our locker room and Svi said, “Who’s that?” Remember when he took his team off the court pregame so they wouldn’t watch our historic pregame video? He’s a wuss!
-
@Crimsonorblue22 I agree he’s a wuss and a dweeb but do think he should get a little credit for developing that “best backcourt in America.” The guards he’s had come through there all get better over time and develop skills that make them hard to guard. Some of that has to be coaching and the system.
I think about it like this, Harris would probably never make it off the bench there in 4 years but a guy like Elijah Johnson or Malik Newman would have been an absolute STAR. Obviously those guys had success at KU as well but would have been HUGE at Baylor. Just my two cents.
-
@benshawks08 no!
-
He’s cringe for sure, I have zero love for him personally but I do respect what he has done and I think we are little blinded to how good he’s been since they are a conference foe and we know the ins and outs. Basically everything Drew does on the court rivals the best of the rest out there. Won a championship, develops talent, gets talent in the door. If he never had to talk the media or deal with his way’s I’d be all for it. I’m surprised his name wasn’t mentioned since he is the coach KU has struggled the most to beat in the last 5 yrs. I’ll end with, he’s a creepy dude
