  • @BeddieKU23 Wonder if they at least reach out to old faithful and see if he’s interested in coming back?

Could see him bring his son on staff to hand the program over to in a few years.

Fire Howard. Suspend Wisconsin’s coach a couple games for grabbing Howard and initiating the fracas. Video with sound makes Wisconsin look super douchey, Michigan uncouth. Both in the wrong, Michigan more so.

  • @Kcmatt7

Howard did make the Elite 8 last year and recruited at a level that very few reach in the last couple cycles. Wonder if that kind of stuff gives him just enough cred to stick around. My money is on Michigan moving on. They have 3 games left against ranked teams & somehow get 4 straight homes games now. We’ll see how much Michigan cares about winning games above everything

  • Michigan absolutely in the wrong. “Wah wah they called a timeout and hurt my precious feelings, Coach.” “Oh yeah? Well, I will make an utter ass out of myself in tribute to Coach K. The old handshake line fool fest!”

  • That video looks really bad for Howard. Not only did he start it but he was trying to avoid the handshake as well.

Not really sure I see Gard’s intent to be anything other then expecting to have that brief interaction with Howard and move on. He initiates contact but how many post game handshakes go in that manner where the coaches stop, have some kind of close contact where they usually are talking into their ear so they can hear each other and then move on. It literally happens all the time.

My main issue with the Wisconsin staff was with that assistant who flew in late and seemed to push or grabs Michigan player. He added to an already bad incident and escalated rather than deescalated at a point when it could have all ended.

  • @benshawks08

For sure Wisconsin staffer adds to the fire. There’s a whole lot of suspensions coming at minimum

  • @BeddieKU23 Yea it’s a tough decision for an AD. They’ve got the #7 class coming in next season, but with free agency and the right hire you can pretty much always avoid a down year.

I would imagine that his contract, and whether or not they thought they could get away without paying, obviously would be the largest factor. And then I also haven’t seen if UM fans are even embarrassed about the situation. The fanbase might not care

  • More loosely connected thoughts:

Gard doesn’t do handshake lines like Self. Self does a one hand shake for pretty much everyone when they go thru the line. Gard does the right hand shake with the left hand on the person’s shaking elbow or pat on the shoulder. He does it EVERY GAME. This is not new. He was simply doing what he does when Howard says an inflammatory statement and ignites the whole thing. So yes…he did touch Howard’s arm…just look at every other time he goes thru the line. If Gard gets suspended a game for stopping Howard in the line to have an adult conversation (think about that for a second)…then what does Howard get for STRIKING AN OPPOSING TEAM’S COACH? Seriously…if Gard gets a game like Jay Bilas, Seth Davis, Jay Williams and others say he should…what does Howard get? 10? 20? Fired?

Once the chaos starts and both teams are getting up in each other’s faces…is there time/capacity for a coach on either team to walk into the situation and evaluate who they should touch and who they shouldn’t? “Oh…you’re an opposing team player coming after one of my players…I’ll just trust that the other team’s coaches are going to handle this one and just touch people wearing the same color shirt as me.” “You’re wearing a blue shirt so I can’t touch you”. Please. Both sets of coaches (hopefully) are trying to clear players away from each other. Who knows what came out of who’s mouth (other than what clearly came out of Howard’s directed at Gard) during the scrum, but Michigan people put their hands on Wisconsin people too. There are reports of a different Wisconsin assistant (Sharif Chambliss…not the one who got punched) ending up on the ground in the middle of it. Hopefully no Wisconsin players or staff touched any Michigan people when trying to take care of him otherwise they might get suspended too.

Gard does have a history of violent touch against Howard where he might feel threatened so that needs to be taken into consideration: https://twitter.com/zachheilprin/status/1495598900002107393?s=12

  • @Kcmatt7

Also he’s not just another coach at Michigan, he’s a beloved Alum.

I believe the media is going to make this a bigger deal then it is. It’s an issue that has to be dealt with swiftly by the conference and move on.

So what would be a big deal? About as big as sideline behavior gets, I’d say.

  • @mayjay

I think its an unusual situation having coaches involved. Not something you see often. Guaranteed to be made bigger then other situations.

I’ve seen worse in the last few weeks. That play by Clemson’s Collins taking out a Duke player in mid-air is as dirty as it gets.

Two coaches unable to end a game shaking hands is comical. Even worse is why it got there.

  • Of course I’m a bit biased but calls for Gard to get suspended are unwarranted. I was on a little road trip and listened to the game and have yet to see the fight except on tiny screens. Krabbenhoft was the asst who got slapped. He’s an all time beloved Badger glue guy type that we all would have revered had he played for KU. One Badger reserve punched someone who knocked down the other assistant coach. One MVP of the fight is the worst college player I’ve ever seen (seriously his garbage time minutes are horrendous). Higginbottom is his name and he made sure Johnny Davis got nowhere close to the scrum.

  • Howard will get a long vacation, not fired. If he was an alum of Central Michigan, we’d be having a different conversation.

  • @BeddieKU23 I disagree. I think this has exposed Howard’s petulance and anger issues that he has carried into games for a long time. Everybody looked the other way until the lid blew off. Howard has several altercations with opposing coaches- had to be restrained from going after Turgeon, etc. It was so bad that Turgeon wrote a letter to the B10 about it before their last blow up. And this isn’t just from Gard and Turgeon. Lots of whispers and coaches remaining anonymous saying the guy is a hothead and a jerk. I mean…pressing the bench warmers? I think there’s a real issue here that needs to be addressed or we’ll end up with a college “Malice in the Palace”. He probably developed that mindset as a player, and it worked for him. Being Coach is a whole new ball of wax, and he simply isn’t emotionally equipped to be a coach, imo. Doesn’t mean he couldn’t improve, but he has no business leading a major college program when he’s doing things like that.

  • Officially a 5 game suspension which is the rest of Michigan’s regular season.

  • I’ve always considered Howard to be a pretty likable guy and a decent coach. Maybe he is, but I doubt anyone’s going to be shaking his hand for a while. Such a weird escalation over basically nothing in the grand scheme of things.

  • Baylor’s in a close game with Oklahoma St. coming down the stretch, only up 4 with 7 minutes left.

  • Watching, osu fan!

  • Home team wins!

  • Go Bryce! Your NIT here

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 not looking as good

  • Dang charges

  • Shoot! Zone killed them

  • @Jethro

3 for sure, Oregon may have put themselves in or around the bubble for now with the home win against UCLA last night. They will have to get a few more decent wins to have a chance it looks.

  • @BeddieKU23 Phil Knight will make sure of it, imho.

Nike money you say? We miss @jaybate-1-0

  • Purdue showing what makes them vulnerable early in March. If you can get enough stops and make the game fast you can get easy buckets all game.

But it is easier said than done to get stops

  • Ou- - Okie State. - - Cesse made Grooves look silly

  • Sparty popping Purdew…Tucky getting handled by the Hogs…could be a really crazy day!

  • Anybody watching texass/wv game? Texass had Cunningham ejected for flagrant 2 foul, Fran disagreed! They just had another hard foul, but it was flagrant 1. Beard coaching? I thought their game vs us was the worst called this season. I thought they killed dave. Hope Fran goes to the sec with beard!

  • Close game, but the “superior athletes “ of Kensucky just lost to the not-so-superior team of Arkansas

  • That TY TY 3 point bankshot just made a bunch of bettors a lot of money. Arkansas was -2.5, and they end up winning by 2.

  • @Bosthawk Notae was awesome. Both ends of the floor. Williams was able to neutralize Oscar on the defensive end by pulling him away from the rim.

    Arkansas is a good team

  • Mercy Oscar is a fricken Man last time I checked he had 26 points and 15 rebounds that’s nuts

  • TCU has a good shot here to do us a huge favor

  • @FarmerJayhawk thx tcu, now we need to beat you guys, twice!

  • @wissox oh my!

  • 1 team losing - - numbers 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , & # 9 teams lost today

  • Zags down 15

  • Timme 0-8 in the first half.

  • Zags down 15 at half

  • 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 9 all lose on the same day. And Providence wins their first ever regular season Big East title.

  • Well, here we are, the start of conference tournament week for the mid-majors. After looking thru the standings I’m surprised at the number of teams that have made huge turnarounds from last season.

The most notable example is Towson in the Colonial. From 4 and 14 last year to 23 and 7 this year (14 and 3 in conference play ) with a respectable KenPom ranking of #63.

Here are some other comeback teams with their records last season vs. this season, in order of ranking. (One caveat: Some of these schools had multiple games cancelled last year due to the coronavirus.)

    Wyoming (Mountain West) - 14-11 to 23-5 (12-3 in conference play). (#46 KenPom) Long Beach State (Big West) - 6-12 to 16-11 (10-3) . (#143) Cal State Fullerton (Big West) - 6-10 to 17-9 (10-3). (#149) Longwood (Big South) - 12-17 to 23-6 (15-1). (#158) Troy (Sun Belt) - 12-16 to 19-10 (10-6). (#173) Samford (Southern) - 6-13 to 20-10 (10-8). (#188) Purdue-Fort Wayne (Horizon) - 6-14 to 20-10 (15-6) (#228) Texas A&M Corpus Christi (Southland) - 5-19 to 19-10 (6-6). (#253)

And even though it’s not exactly a mid-major, a shout out to Middle Tennessee of Conference USA. Picked to finish last in their division, they went from 5-18 to 22-7 (13-3 conference). (#97). Credit where credit is due.

Not impossible that KU could draw one of these teams in the first or even second round (if they survive their conference tourneys, of course).
