I think Jalen will improve once he gets into the flow. Missing those early games hurt him.
The issue is the same as last year. Big Dave just doesn’t fit with the rest of the personnel on the roster. His game is not a good match for everyone else, so it breaks the flow of the team to try and get him involved offensively.
Best solution is to make him a rim runner and rebounder. He’s just not good enough one on one to have that role, especially when you have three much better scorers in Agbaji, Wilson and Martin.
-
No doubt, Yesufu and Clemence need to see the court more.
-
I thought Yesufu brought really good energy in the second half and also in his limited minutes v dayton. If Harris isn’t providing A+ defense in a game his minutes need to drop. Love the guy but he hasn’t developed into a playmaker yet mostly because of his hesitance to score. Harris is also hurt by the lack of defensive effort of his teammates. He can provide ALL the pressure in the world but if he doesn’t have help and good rotation from the other guys on the floor, that pressure can turn into easy buckets.

Obviously the sample size with Yes and Zach is small but I do think they merit more consideration. I’d like to see less time for Harris, and man Jalen has really been terrible so far.

Use about whatever metric you want, Yes is a top 4 guard on a team that plays 4 guards a majority of the time (depending on how you view Jalen I suppose). He needs to be seeing the court 20 minutes a game at least.
-
Yes certainly looked like he was a bit more comfortable on the floor then he was in the previous 3 games. His speed and athleticism shine when he gets the chance. He can score and Self keeps saying he’s the best on-ball defender we have. I think he should see a few more minutes his way cause he’s got some things going for him Harris/Remy cannot do.
-
I might have said before the season I wanted Yes to start at the 2. He’s getting more comfortable each game and tbh is a better defender than I thought. Dude’s got some levers that let him play bigger than 5’11 or whatever he is

I’m thinking about entering the transfer portal. Putting out feelers to who might want my services.

I’ll give you a pack of Sour Patch Kids if you stay. It’s the best NIL deal I can offer.

@tis4tim That’s all? I’m gonna hold out for more. KU tickets for life maybe?

Better make sure they are for BB, not field hockey or…golf.
-
@FarmerJayhawk I think Yesufu should too. If he gets more time, he’ll be able to knock down some 3s.

They’re Bocce Ball tix.
The Big 12 expanding to Florida will work out well for us in Bocce Ball with its huge population of super-seniors with remaining eligibility. Our “in” is that Ol’ Mitch is getting a NIL contract to be on bulletin boards for The Villages.

That’s a shame, 'cause KU is actually good at golf.

I was thinking lifetime golf privileges at Alvamar would do as well.

@wissox Looked into it and realized it’s now called the Jayhawk Club.

Really? Cool.

@Marco That’s what I thought too! Played there once with a great coupon when I was a student. Enjoyable as I recall.

Jalen… he needs his swagger back. He’s a guy with huge swagger that will help all our guys when he gets it back… and will make the biggest difference in our offense picking up speed… which should be our biggest goal now… increasing tempo! Just listen to Self. Jalen speeds this team up (when he’s on his game). I think, right now, he needs more minutes. Self is playing this drama out for what it is worth… giving Jalen a little lesson in manhood. Give him time. Eventually Jalen will earn his keep and more. Let’s not forget this… Jalen had an off-night but he snagged 9 rebounds in only 16 minutes of play! This was a game we won because we had more possessions… primarily because of our 18 rebound margin!
Zach - I agree with Texas Hawk… Too many minutes will show his weakness. Let’s just slightly increase his minutes over time, as he continues to do well on the floor. We are liking what we see so play him just a bit more, not only as a boost for the team, but gives him needed experience. Man… I really loved how he glided out around the arc and presented a very smooth concept of high ball screen. He moved so quick off his feet from that screen, making him a total threat for a quick cut to the rim. As I said before… if I could improve one thing with Dave it would be to get him more capable on the high ball screen.

Ha… I heard what he’s saying… but I think we are starting to look a bit more fluid on offense so it looks a little less like we are basically flipping to slo mo to feed the post now.
I think St. John’s defense was not impressive and that helped us look good… but we will take it! Let’s build some confidence and develop a style of play.
The big change in our offense is CB’s light going off in his head on how he can be effective. I feel 100% that he watches Zag’s game footage. This is what all our guys need to do. Look for an angle to the basket WITHOUT the ball and then the right timing and you’ll score an easy hoop! This is the type of offense we have never really focused on before. It’s just smart basketball, and my hat goes off to the Zags for exposing college basketball to basically playing undeveloped offense!
-
Ochai and CB move so well off the ball.
-
Dave put up some good numbers and looked better. I am hopeful we keep developing the style we showed last night. If we do, Dave will put up some great numbers this year and also have a very, very fun season!
Maybe he came out flat this year because everyone put pressure on him! All the talk was about our offense going through Dave. That wasn’t healthy for Dave. Let Dave’s game come organically, without force.
-
@BShark amen!
-
@drgnslayr BD moved his man out too.

I’m guilty of criticizing Self too much, the numbers show that we do not post up too much. It was just a point of contention because of how the Dayton game ended.
Och and CB are getting 25 shots a game combined and are being super efficient. Both have insane PER for a wing.
-
Yep! Throwing it in opens it up for the perimeter guys! Double team even better. BD just gotta stay steady. hit his throws
-
Your point about Agbaji and Braun being efficient is a two edged sword. It’s doubtful that both will continue to be this efficient. Braun is shooting 61%. Agbaji is at 55%. Even Martin is at 55%. There’s just no way for guards to continue to shoot that well over the course of a full season.
Regression is coming.
The good news is that even though they will regress, the way they have played so far, and the shots that they are taking, is repeatable. If they do that, even when their shooting drops back, they will still be very productive.
And hopefully, right around that same time, Wilson will regress in a positive way. He’s shooting 31% right now. He cannot stay that bad, or his minutes will disappear on a team this deep.
-
@justanotherfan JWill being our worst rotation player was not a plot twist I saw coming that’s for sure.
-
@BShark won’t last. He’s to skilled. He just has to settle down and stop pressing. One good game will take care of that
