2021 Transfer Talk/List
-
It feels like chaos - but there is a chance KU returns it’s entire starting rotation lol.
-
People are worried and all I can think is we are returning the 3 best players from a top 15 team (Och, Jalen and Dave) and adding Yesufu, Pettiford and post depth.
And that is at a minimum.
I think we will be much improved.
All we talked about all year was needing a guy who can get to the basket. Check.
Post depth. Addressed.
About the only thing missing is adding shooters, but something tells me our 3pt woes can improve pretty drastically in house once you add a real PG to the rotation for 40 minutes and subtract Garrett (God please).
People think our shooting was bad - but it wasn’t REALLY the starters. A good chunk of our woes were from a complete lack of offensive fire power off the bench.
- Enaruna - .245
- Bryce - .222
- TFG - .130
Dajaun only took one three per 40 minutes on the floor so he wasn’t exactly coming in to be the spark on offense.
-
I think Ochai returning would be a miracle/surprise but who knows at this point.
-
@BShark Yea I know that post was basically goodbye, but until I see us sign one of these 15+ ppg guys I don’t know that I’ll believe he is gone.
-
@Kcmatt7 https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/bryce-hamilton-1.html
Advanced stats are not great but…
-
-
@BShark Definitely better with less volume the season before… Idk I wouldn’t be pissed but I’m not going to jump out of my chair if we get him.

Indeed. There is a ton of talent in the portal, that’s for sure.
-
@BShark I think what sticks out about Bryce Hamilton though is those rebound and assist numbers. Willing passer, willing rebounder. Even if he appears to be the only thing that UNLV squad really had.
-
We cannot always assume that a kid leaving KU is leaving because they:
- weren’t good enough
- didn’t work hard
- were soft
- had some behind the scenes problem
Many of these guys can play, and end up having good careers elsewhere. Many end up playing a similar role that they could have played at KU, but were never given the opportunity. Some get bigger roles elsewhere.
Stepping back from athletics for a moment, college is about finding the opportunities that are going to take you into adulthood in the best possible position. That’s how I approached college. It’s about finding out what you want to do and putting yourself in the best position for a future career.
For “student-athletes” its the same. They have to put themselves in the best possible position for their future career, as well as for themselves. I had a friend (non-athlete) that went to a certain school (not KU). After their freshman year, the school re-vamped the department they were majoring in. After the fall of their sophomore year, they transferred. They felt like the restructured department wasn’t going to be good for them, so they left.
Another friend attended a different school, knowing full well that they intended to transfer after their sophomore year. They wanted to go close to home to get some Gen Ed credit (and save some money) before pursuing the school they really wanted to graduate from.
In both cases, those students made decisions that were best for them, and I’m not sure anyone should hold that against them. So why do we treat athletes differently? Bryce Thompson has a shot at being a fringe NBA player. If his career continues on the trajectory it had at KU, that possibility gets less and less likely. Tyon Grant Foster should be a contributor for an NCAA tournament team, or a star for a fringe bubble team. He barely played at KU, even though KU sorely needed a player like him (athletic guy that could defend multiple positions). I wouldn’t be surprised if both Thompson and Grant-Foster have big years next season in a new uniform - seasons they likely would not have been able to have staying in crimson and blue.

Not really excited about that either. That team couldn’t shoot
-
@BeddieKU23 I’m just pointing out that there will be familiar faces… I already told @BShark privately that if we start the same 5 I’m not watching lol.
Won’t do that to myself again.
-
@justanotherfan I’d be shocked with TGF, but I get your point.
-
Yea I don’t begrudge players for transferring at all. You get 4 years. Make the best of them.
-
I don’t expect we will see the same 5 with whats going on but yeah the possibility is still there. I’m just not that thrilled right now and hope Bill figures it out.
-
-
Texas picks up a pair of big transfers- Devin Askew of Kentucky and Timmy Allen of Utah. Allen avg 17 ppg last year. Also, Andrew Jones will return for his 6th year at Texas. Wow. Jase Febres who was injured for most of the year will also return. Texas has a salty backcourt again
Micah Peavy trades Texas teams leaving Tech for TCU. That makes 5 transfers for Dixon now.
Athletic big Tyreek Smith leaving Tech. Always liked this one’s upside.
-
Wouldn’t that just be a kick in the you know what, Texas has expressed interest in Eastern Washington Tanner & Jacob Groves. Beard is starting to piss me off
-
Beard is loading up on transfers I see.
-

Now he’s after frontcourt help if Brown and Sims leave
-
KSU looking to add a post player that shot 34% from the floor.
-
who dat? Sounds like Self’s kinda player too
-
@BeddieKU23 We’ve never had a post player close to that bad. Massoud from Wake Forest. Looks like he loves hanging around the perimeter.
-
Seems like the Collins situation is still in the kicking the tires phase, has a zoom call this week apparently. Honestly this would be a BAD take if it happened.
What a mess this whole TyTy, losing Snacks, Ochai to the draft/Bryce to transfer/Wilson situation is. Clearly everything within the program is not clicking.
-
I think it’ll all be fine. Questioning Spring Bill in April is pretty silly…
-
Big Cams paperwork is in. Signed and sealed now can he deliver? I think he may surprise some people
-
@Oldmanhawk He can certainly score. My questions are all about his defense. Will be interesting to see.
-
Kinda why this team needs a Bishop. Athletic that may be able to guard more versatile 5’s.
-
@BeddieKU23 If Ochai goes my dream adds would be Bishop and 2 guards. I’d rather have Ochai back and add Bishop and one guard or possibly two guards either would work.
-
@BShark Do you have any guards in mind other than TyTy?
-
@KirkIsMyHinrich Well we aren’t getting TyTy.
David Collins, Bryce Hamilton and Daejon Davis are potentially real options. We will know a lot more on Collins by the end of the week.
-
I am going to say it everyone, so go ahead and crucify me. I - and I respect him as a player - don’t want Marcus to return. Don’t think it would be beneficial for him or the team.
-
@Marco Double upvote. Maybe triple.

Cool. I think I’d want Davis the most out of that group. I like the defense and efficiency.

Our shitty shooting really was the starters. Enaruna, Bryce, and TGF only took 81 out of 663 3 point attempts. Don’t try and blame three guys who only took 12% of KU’s outside attempts for KU being a bad shooting team.
Christian Braun and Jalen Wilson are the two biggest reasons KU’s shooting was shit last year. Braun was 34% on 153 attempts and Wilson was 33.3% on 120 attempts. Those two combined to take about 41% of KU’s outside attempts and only made 33.7% of their attempts combined. That’s where the trouble with shooting last was, Braun and Wilson.

Why? I get it that he wasn’t very prolific this year but I think its a bit unfair to use this year as the measuring stick. It was just overall a bad team that didn’t gel well and had very little top end talent. Marcus was great the year before when DD was running point. We were #1 in the country and odds on favorite to win it all. I would absolutely take that guard setup again if we can get a Dotson-esk PG back in the fold and a more experienced Marcus back in the role as the 2. What am i missing?
-
@BShark Please no on Collins, he’s gotten worse every season shooting. 50% as a freshman down to down to 42% last year. He was 71% from the FT line as a freshman and was down to 55% last season. Hard pass on Collins. KU doesn’t need another guard who can’t shoot.
-
Garrett was absolutely miscast this year. If we are losing Ochai I would love to have Garrett back playing on the wing over the transfer options. I also know he is a trap for Bill so it’s kind of a double edged sword.
-
@RockkChalkk Garrett is a crutch for Bill. The type of player on the roster that let’s Bill be “comfortable.”
He doesn’t have to manufacture points or make the offense better if he can just play Garrett 35 mpg and have a rock fight. He’s good at rock fights.
But Bill Self rock fight teams have historically performed poorly in the tournament.
Garrett was a great hawk and an exceptional defender, but honestly I think we are better off playing 5 on 5 on the offensive side of the ball. You know Bill will make the defense work even if he played 5 walk-ons.

12th ranked ADJD with the group this year… Bill could have a bag of rocks and land in the top 25.
-
I hear you. But to be fair, playing Garrett isn’t the reason we didn’t have scoring. There wasn’t another option on the roster. This year’s team was missing a lot of pieces. Its just hard to keep up when you see the rest of the team getting knocked for their (lack of) defense - i.e. Wilson, but are also presumably happy to see a defensive player of the year caliber starter move on.
-
I’d take Garrett the wing back in a heartbeat. If he can replicate what he did off the ball in 19-20 while maintaining his improvement from the line he’s definitely one of the best players in the league.

I like to call last year’s roster “oops all wings”.
-
@RockkChalkk I have had my same thoughts for the entire 3 years of Garrett starting… So maybe I simply have a bias.
I just think scoring a basketball is more important trait than stopping someone else from scoring. When you don’t need Garrett to score because he’s playing next to two NBA players, then having him play D is great.
If you don’t have that, you need Garrett to be a threat. And he just isn’t.
Would I be pissed if Garrett came back? No. But knowing what we have in Garrett vs. what is behind door #2 I’ll take my chances with door #2 is all I’m saying.
-
-
Harris and Yesufu are good enough to man the PG spot next year with Garrett playing off the ball. Harris and Garrett were a very solid combo last year with Harris as the lead guard and Garrett playing off the ball.
Garrett playing off the ball allows him to play his defense and be the NDPOY caliber defender that we didn’t always see last season.

New top want. Total stud, long line etc
-
oh hai
Not a great shooter but certainly can improve when he’s not the #1 option.

Seeing that he was an Adidas kid as well. Hmm hmm hmm.
-
@BShark This is the one Bill needs to land.
I’m good with Collins too off the bench. But Williams fits a need and seems like the type of player to fit with Self. Very active on D.
