Gonzaga

Baylor is the only team equipped to beat Gonzaga this year. Baylor’s defense is good enough to slow down Gonzaga’s offense and keep them in the 70’s and Baylor shoots the ball well enough that they can outscore most teams including Gonzaga on a good shooting day because Gonzaga isn’t a great defensive team.

Baylor has been the one team all year that could match up with Gonzaga and why many people were disappointed we didn’t get the scheduled game between the two tes earlier this season.

That Baylor/Gonzaga game would be classic

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 If Baylor is the only team that can do it - Go Zags. I flippin hate Baylor.

I can’t stand Gonzaga. - Would much rather have a league representive Baylor supporting the Big 12 then them F - - - - Sticks

  • @jayballer67 Hmm - to each his own. I feel like Drew is the Big 12 version of G. Marshall. My personal hangup.

  • @nuleafjhawk lol, don’t think he beats his players or coaches!

  • No, thank you. I never root for another Big12 team to win the championship.

something wrong with you then. The better they do - -the tougher the teams look , the better we look. - -Only time I won’t pull for another Big 12 team is when they are playing us. Other then that the more our league wins the better the Whole conference looks others se how hard it is to compete in this league the better we look

Difference of opinion. I don’t root for another conference team to win the chip, ever.

    I’m sorry

  • @Crimsonorblue22 In my humble opinion - both slimeballs. Different types of slime.

  • @Marco I’m with you - it’s KU or nobody in this conference.

  • It’s interesting to me that Gonzaga is the least hyped undefeated team in history. Their weak conference and of course a shorter season means they had fewer chances to lose games. I’m guessing they’ll win the 'ship but they’re not going to go down in history like Indiana in 76.

I do think Baylor can beat them and I’ll have to give grudging respect to Scott. His revival of the program after a murderous scandal is really remarkable. He has fashioned the 2nd or 3rd best program in the league after us and Tech. His teams have become more and more feared as the years go by. And I have to admit. They’re fun to watch.

I haven’t the stomach to check the bracket, but is it set up so Baylor and Zaga play each other?

By the way should Michigan get Livers back for the FF watch out for them too.

  • This is just my opinion… but I don’t think Baylor matches up well with Gonzaga. I think if the championship game is these two teams Gonzaga wins. I see some definite flaws in the Baylor defense and feel certain Gonzaga will exploit them.

I think Gonzaga’s tough game is tomorrow, with USC. USC is not nearly as polished as Gonzaga, but they are more athletic, have height and play smart ball. If USC comes with all that enthusiasm and they make some shots, I think they can take a lead and pressure Gonzaga into speeding up and losing composure. I think USC will take away a lot of those easy baskets Gonzaga gets on most teams by exploiting weak areas.

    Maybe I jinx USC… haha… I’m good at that!

BTW: Kudos to Drew! We’ve watched him get out-coached for years. But the guy has worked hard and paid his dues. I believe he remained humble and fought to become a better coach and it worked. There is no way Baylor is this good this year without a coach who put it all together. I hope he continues to bring tough teams because the Big 12 benefits, including Kansas!

I’m excited to see that Houston - Baylor game. On paper, Baylor should win this game (and I think they will)… but hard to count out Houston. Sampson is tricky and his guys play tricky, too. I’m hoping for a wild game!

  • Reflecting back to the depths of Baylor’s massive tragedy and scandal under Dave Bliss, I would like Baylor to win it all as a testament to Drew’s perseverance and commitment to their program. The football program still stinks like rotted fish, but ol’ Homer did a damned good job with his kids at Valpo, and Drew is following in step by keeping bb clean (as far as we know…).

i think Gonzaga is going to have problems with Baylor’s - - guards of Teague - - Butler -& Mitchell Toss in Meyer - I think it will be classic. - -this Gonzaga / Baylor is the best match up possible

That might a good game, but Baylor has shown that they have off games being able to shoot from deep, Gonzaga never does.

  • @Marco

Gonzaga doesn’t shoot a lot of 3’s but I think your pointing out they just shoot a ridiculous % from the field in almost every game. Their layup game is 2nd to none in the country. They run stuff to get you going one way and then all of a sudden they have a backcut or a layup, or an offensive rebound for a layup. So much offense right at the tin.

  • @BeddieKU23 They are just so solid everywhere. You can’t help off of anyone without giving up an open 3 to a capable shooter.

You can’t stop them in transition because they have Suggs (and the others aren’t too shabby either).

Kispert shooting .460 from deep means you literally can’t help off the guy no matter what because giving up a 2 is better than giving up an automatic 3. His gravitational pull alone changes how you can defend them.

Timme has the ability to hit a 3, and is money from the FT line, so you can even run him up to the top of the key and get the opposing rim protector out of the lane with no way to help.

They are just a nearly perfectly built college roster and they have an amazing coach to top it off. They are even fun to watch because they play beautiful basketball.

  • @Kcmatt7

And beyond those 3, Ayayi & Nembhard are just redicilous in their own right. They push pace so much that they pretty much run you out of our own rhythm. Creighton tried so hard in the first half, made something like 8 of 9 at one point and then missed 4 and they are down double digits. Demoralizing. I think USC’s length at every position can cause some issues but if USC isn’t locked in defensively and doesn’t sag the paint I don’t see how they win. Gonzaga literally finds ways to make it a layup line

  • @BeddieKU23 The one thing USC has going for them is that I still think Mobley has yet to really “try.”

If he had one of those games where he blocks 5 shots and locks up Timme they could do it. But I wouldn’t bet on it.

  • Of the 5 teams left besides Gonzaga. UCLA has the worst chance at beating Gonzaga because they’re the worst combination of defense and offense. USC and Houston are next because both are good enough defensively to slow down Gonzaga and hold them below 80, but neither is going enough offensively to outscore Gonzaga. Michigan has the 2 nd best chance because they’re a good offense and defense, but not elite at either one. Baylor has the best chance because they are good enough defensively to hold Gonzaga in the 70’s and Baylor is the 2nd best offensive team left in the tournament and is the best 3 point shooting team in the country so they have the ability to outscore Gonzaga.

At the end of the day, I still think Gonzaga wins it all.

  • I’ve never seen a more balanced, efficient D-1 college team? Am I wrong?

  • @Marco said in Gonzaga:

I’ve never seen a more balanced, efficient D-1 college team? Am I wrong?

2012 Kentucky, the entire 2008 FF, 2009 UNC, 2016/18 Nova, any of the great teams from the 90s when teams were LOADED with NBA talent etc etc

  • Hell 2015 Kentucky is better tbh. They were pretty unfortunate to not win it all.

  • Everybody take Gonzaga - - I’ll take my chances with Baylor and feel pretty good about it. TexasHawk mentioned the reasons. - - - Jared Butler really hasn’t had a standout game yet in the tourney - waiting for that minute for him to bust loose , Davion Mitchell I think will probably draw Suggs - -Think Mitchell will do good enough defensively on Suggs but offensively not only can Mitchell D up but can contribute and pretty well on the offensive end – Teague is Teague - -I just think Baylor backcourt not going to be intimadated by any means. - - - Vital will hold his own on the Boards , the you got wild man Meyer, only thing is he will either shoot you in - -OR shoot you out.

He has been playing better it seems to me in the Tourney - - I’ll still take Baylor’s chances

  • @Marco - If google (and my lame math skills) serve me correctly -Gonzaga’s record over the last 10 years is 312 - 41 (.884).

Kansas’ record for the same time frame is 285 - 72 (.798)

Ours has been “helped. scoff.scoff” with a plethora of one and dones. Gonzaga has had one. EVER.

Somewhere in one of these posts, someone asked if athleticism or intelligence was the deciding factor in great teams. Obviously, you have to be able to dribble, pass and shoot, but I vote for intelligence. I’d like to never see another one and done in Lawrence.

  • @BShark 9 NBA players on that team lol. NINE.

2012 UK team probably could beat them too.

Better is a tough thing to figure out though… This Gonzaga team has at least 5 future NBA players on it.

11 NBA guys in the SWEET SIXTEEN game between KU and Arizona in well you know what year…

  • This Gonzaga team has four sure thing NBA guys (Suggs, Timme, Nembhard, Kispert) and several others that could eventually make it to the NBA. Probably not 9, but I could see five or six.

But Baylor has three or four future NBA guys as well (Butler and Mitchell seem safe, Vital, Teague and Tchamwa Tchatchoua have very solid chances). I could see a national title game with seven or eight future NBA guys.

  • A great team. Yeah, I’ll admit it, love how they play.

  • hahaha… my jinx worked. USC is gone.

Now for my prediction for 2021 National Championship… Gonzaga by a landslide!

  • @nuleafjhawk

That would be me. I remember the old days… when Larry Bird was mocked for being athletically inferior.

The point isn’t to say athleticism is a negative. It’s obviously a great asset. But without basketball IQ athleticism is squandered. When you have a player that marries IQ and athleticism… hello NBA!

  • @drgnslayr That jinx isn’t going to work, brother. It WILL be Gonzaga by a landslide.

  • Still sticking with Baylor - - USC is NOT BAYLOR

Bird was a really good athlete (until his back gave out). If you watch his early years (basically through 1987) Bird was very quick for his size and also quite agile. He didn’t have the straight line speed, but he wasn’t slow.

Now, compared to someone like Dominique Wilkins or Julius Erving, Bird appeared to be athletically inferior, but you are talking about two of the all time great pure athletes in NBA history. The “Bird wasn’t a good athlete” talk is a myth that is reinforced by his later years, when his back really sapped his quickness and agility.

Taking this back to Gonzaga, of the guys on this team, I think only Suggs is a likely NBA starter. The others are strong bench guys. But I think Gonzaga puts 4-6 guys off this squad into the League.

  • @justanotherfan

I was blessed for the opportunity to watch Bird live many games through college and sometimes in pro. I wouldn’t say he had speed, but he had quickness and deception. Definitely NOT a dud athlete! I still don’t think there is anyone who knew more about how to create scoring space than Bird. And it gave him comfort on his shot that it wouldn’t be blocked so he really focused on making his shots. Definitely one of the great deceptive players ever to play the game. His no-look passes were sick! Magic copied the no-look pass off of Bird and learned to be effective, too. But no one like the master!

The “Bird is not a good athlete” crowd made those comments out of envy for Bird being one of the greatest minds to play the game. I would comment, “for being such a non-athlete, he sure kicked their arses!” Play it right back to them!

  • @nuleafjhawk

I’m working hard on this! lol

I will say that Gonzaga plays perhaps the best “textbook basketball” I have ever seen on the college level. (total jinx comment) (I’m working it hard!)
