Thoughts on Oachi . What ya thinkin ?

  • Boy tell you what as well as we are playing , and we are playing well , I know this much , we have just got to get more from Oachi down the road. - -We are going to need him to bring something to the table , we are going to need everyone to produce come tourney time.

There are time he just disappears . Such as yesterday ZERO , Nada - -we just can’t have that in the NCAA’S we need everyone to bring something. Sure could use a three’s - something. He vanishes at the wrong times, he has been very on and off all year. Now it’s time to step up. I got all the confidence in him he just needs to bring it. - -What’s your thoughts ? - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • He and Braun are much alike, and when you really look at them, not a great deal of difference in their experience.

  • @jayballer73 he played pretty great D, got some critical boards, thinking he needs 👀test, those passes, shooting🥴. Braun can shoot, but doesn’t enough, not sure he boarded, he doesn’t stay w/man well. D breaks down. Guess that’s just what I think. Braun was our hi pt guy against osu last time? Maybe? Always afraid of them, plus dead legs, need bench.

  • @jayballer73 I agree with @Crimsonorblue22, the dude had a bad game on offense. He was solid defensively and had 5 rebounds. I mentioned this on another thread. He is super young and hardly a sophomore. He didn’t start playing til late January last season. This was likely the biggest game of his young career and a learning point. In the tournament really need him, Braun and Moss to play consistently. We can ill afford for all 3 of those guys to be off on the offensive end. Also it’s Ochai Agbaji.

  • I really think he’s our third best defender behind garret and doke. He and Marcus will continue to terrorize big 12 offenses next year. He has the tools to be a good scorer but I don’t think that’s his role this year with dot and doke being so efficient and Garrett really coming on as a driver and passer. I believe he and Braun can reshape this offense yet again next year into a three point shooting outside in type of team. He’s a streaky shooter which to me means with the right practice and focus he can be a really good shooter. You can also see with some of the shots he tries in games (turn arounds and what not) he has confidence in his scoring ability even if he hasn’t shown it all the time.

Ya he is pretty good on the D. I’m just afraid that were just going to need some offensive output if we want to make a late run in March. Not saying we need huge numbers but just think were going to need Moss/Braun. Dotson ? - - OR Moss / Oachi / Braun to help out to some degree with the three ball keep opposing defenses honest enough to keep from sagging on Doke.

I feel we get in the Tourney really think we need around ummm 6 ? - -three at least per to be a threat and advance - - doesn’t matter where the 6 come from - -possibly 2 apiece - -any combination , just think that’s a number where it will keep defenses honest and just not smother Doke. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

YA , I know I can never spell his name right. Yet people always seem to know who I’m talking about Thing is that it hasn’t been just this game though. There has been other games throughout this year this has happened , we can’t have that in the tourney

  • @jayballer73 the auto-correct gets us all, I agree we need him to be consistent but I don’t want to be too hard on the young fella.

No not trying to sound that way. I think he is a good player , just a little inconsistent right now - - just that were going to need him I think. He is a guy that can knock down a couple of three’s. - - Heard commentators mention over and over and I agree he is probably the most athletic on the team, just hoping he shows up for the big stage, he will be fine. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Fortunately, he doesn’t seem to let his offense affect his defense. He has been pretty solid defensively. Braun looked a bit lost defensively at times yesterday, but he seems to find a way to stir things up and come up with loose balls quite often. Against OSU I think Braun and McCormick need to be ready to play bigger minutes. Possibly even Enaruna.

  • Oachi is a sophomore. I know, I know… Dotson is too, but he’s a freak. Oachi is a normal sophomore. He’s contributing with his defense and his offense is slumping a bit… But if he keeps improving, he could start contributing some meaningful points in the post-season. Really, that’s the best we can hope for. That’s why we have a veteran like Moss on the team; he’s taking the shooting pressure off Oachi this year.

But don’t forget what Oachi did last year-- his shooting form is a thing of beauty… he’s pure. That’s the same guy… He’s getting lots of reps on defense and building up his size right now. He’ll be in the spotlight next year.

  • Hopefully Ochai just has to weather through some big games before he starts wearing “big boy pants.” He was trying to not make mistakes on offense and that means he wasn’t in time with the pace of the game. We’ve seen him when he “let his hair down” a bit and he can bring plenty to our offense. I’m not holding my breath that he will get this figured out this year. The games will just get bigger and he may struggle through the big games. Or he might not. What I do feel comfortable with is he will, one day, be a solid contributor more often than not.

It’s hard to beat down on players that are so young.

Speaking of young players… that Doke played an unreal game! I hope he can do that when we play teams with better post defense.

We did come into this game with a specific strategy. Very heavy focus on pick and roll offense right through the paint. Almost had the choreography of our chop. Not sure we can get away with that level of success from here on out, but it sure worked well against one of the best defenses in the country… just not a great post defensive team. I completely embrace using this when we can. It’s an offense that focuses on all the right things; Devon and Marcus driving the paint, Doke scoring off of lobes, and eventually it opens up Isaiah, Christian and Ochai for the trey. Also creates some trey opportunities for Devon. This is a much better way to approaching feeding the post, through focus on a motion offense. I’m loving watching Devon and Marcus taking their man off the dribble. Sometimes Isaiah and Ochai can do it, too. This would be a great way to get Ochai a bit more offense because he can finish in the lane and could use something to bump up his esteem.

  • We’ve seen nearly 30 games this year. Ochai continues to play similar to how Wayne Selden did here years ago as a Soph. Ball-Handling, Passing & an Erratic jump shot are his major issues. I thought his defense Saturday was average for him but average for him is better then 75% of the NCAA at the wing position. He has to make open shots. You can definitely tell in big games he’s in the learning phase of how to deal with things. The end of game against Baylor was atrocious. Self is ride or die with him though so I guess we just have to keep supporting and hope his good games come at the opportune moments

I think with the four of Doke, Dotson, Ochai and Garrett on the floor together we are just so hard to score against that you really can’t take him out of the game. This defense literally has the best rating in the Kenpom era at the moment. Hard to think they do that without any one of those 4 guys.

I agree, his importance on defense gets overshadowed when he struggles to score. The emergence of Moss & Braun as scoring options on the perimeter has negated Ochai needing to be a consistent scoring option. We just beat the #1 team in the country and he had zero points. I think he’s too valuable to sit even when he’s struggling on offense and as we saw Saturday Self is going to continue to play him regardless.

  • When his jumper is working he is fine but it is just too inconsistent. He is thinking too much on offense and needs more opportunities just going to the rim with fewer options. Maybe use him as a screener for Dot on the same side as Braun/Moss.

Defensively he is where we need him to be.

I’m not so sure that it was as much of it being Baylor’s not so good interior post defense as it was just the size/mass/strength of Doke. I don’t think it matters much really who is trying to defend Doke when he pins an opponent down low , and gets low post position established. - -Doke gets it down low like that , it’s over. I truly don’t think that there is anyone who can actually stop him when he gets it there. The guy is just a beast , the transformation he has done with his body is just incredibile - - -so dam solid, I know it’s wrong and I would be on the bench but if I’m trying to defend him and he gets the ball in that position - - - I’M OUT lol - let me step out your way big boy lol.

And I certainly hope people don’t think I’m trying to talk crap on Ochai I think he is a very good player, just that I guess it’s more about him still growing and has inconsistent times - -he is going to be fine , just sure could use him to show better in big games - still say there is going to be a time where we need him to drain a couple of three’s play bigger in the tourney. I’m still not convinced we can go with him putting up a goose egg if we are deep in the tourney a lot more at stake

  • BELIEVE me NOT talking down about our boy - -however like I said on the local sports program, they were also saying , we have just got to get something out of Oachi, we are going to need production come tourney time.

We can’t have a Zero in thirty Nine minutes of playing time in the tourney need his scoring. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Think he was pretty solid tonight
