Other Games

  • I am a huge fan of Beard but anyone that watched the end of the Kentucky game in regulation and OT could not come away impressed at all with what he did. I was in shock at how awful Tech executed down the stretch often times coming out of timeouts.

  • I didn’t mean that they all flamed out just that they were flukey. I don’t think Beard will totally fade but I wouldn’t tag him as the top coaching candidate either.

  • @Woodrow That last ridiculous drive by Moretti reminded me of 2013 vs Michigan with EJ’s wacky drive way out to the right of the lane followed by the desperate heave out to 24-ft-from-the-rim Tharpe.

  • @Woodrow

Did you take the end of that game and OT as anything Beard did wrong? His 90% FT shooter missed badly on the first to win it in regulation. Then a freshman went to the line and missed the first being a 60% shooter in OT I believe it was. I think the difference in the game was missed free throws and not having anyone big enough to match Richards inside. He had a monster game against them

  • @BShark

He is recruiting well at Tech. Culver & Smith just completely blew up as under the radar guys, Moore (flamed out and transferred but Top 50 kid), Ramsey was Top 25 kid from this past class. He got an All American this year who looks really solid. Moretti was a Euro, Edwards was underrated IMO. I think as far as High School recruiting goes he’s doing a lot of similar things as Self, recruiting Top talent, getting underrated kids and developing.

He hits the transfer market hard and got two studs in Mooney/Owens who were integral pieces last season. Clarke/Holyfield haven’t had the impact those did last year but they have been key pieces to the young squad he has.

I know he hasn’t proven himself beyond the last 2 seasons but an Elite 8 and losing the Championship in OT certainly build cred quickly. I think he’s a good character coach from what he says to the media and he’s young enough (10 years younger then Self) to think he could continue the elite level play we’ve had.

It’s a tall order but the other 2 coaches I’d put in the want bracket- Wright & Few are older and have really shown no interest in leaving their current gigs.

Yea I need to see at least next season before I’m sold on him I think. This is the first year he’s had his own guys and they are 12-7 with 4 games left against KU, Baylor and WVU.

And then they have road games against everyone else in the league except KSU and TCU.

Kenpom is projecting they finish 18-13.

To put it in a little perspective, Bill Self hasn’t lost 13 games since 1995 at Oral Roberts.

He hasn’t lost 12 games since 1998 in his first year at Tulsa. And since then, he has never lost more than 10 games in a season.

I’m not going to absolutely crush Beard over this season. But if next year he doesn’t bounce back with a team ready to compete for the league title I’ll be skeptical that he’s the guy. He will have back to back Top 15 recruiting classes and that should be plenty of talent to challenge or beat KU in the B12.

  • The reason I’m so big on Tony Bennett, he’s finished the season ranked the past 6 seasons. This might be the first year he hasn’t in the past 7. And 5 of those seasons he finished Top 6.

So he’s won consistently through multiple recruiting classes and not just been a good team. He’s had arguably one of the best 6 teams the past 7 consecutive years. And he’s proven he can win the big one.

AND he’s now proven he can win no matter where. He’s done it at two P5 schools, neither of whom were a basketball powerhouse before he got there.

You can say Virginia basketball is boring, and I’d agree with you. But you can’t say it doesn’t win.

  • @BeddieKU23 I didn’t see anything that resembled a well ran offensive set at the end of that game and OT.

Watching Self out of timeouts and then end of that game on both sides really is night and day.

I like Beard and think he is awesome, I just didn’t see anything in that game from him at the end.

  • @Kcmatt7

He definitely can win. Personally I’m just not on his bandwagon but I recognize he is a great coach. I recognize K, Cal, Huggins, etc as great coaches but they are not the guys I would pick to lead KU post Self whenever that comes.

But I can see the appeal from a stability, winning, defensive minded coach

  • @Woodrow

If I remember correctly guys didnt make plays and I thought Kentucky’s athletic bodies bothered them at the end. I agree there are very few coaches better then Self, if any in certain situations but I thought his players kind of showed their immaturity in that one. Ramsey was non existent that last part and Moretti tried too much to make a play which I dont think is his calling card either. That was a young team that just didnt finish. But I can see how anyone who watched might think otherwise. That was a game Tech shouldn’t have lost

Still just would not want that here - -it’s just to dam boring, kind of like watching the grass grow, and if he gets behind - - forget about it, his teams are just not designed enough to come from behind , causes them to get out of their comfort zone and becomes helter skelter - sorry I understand what you say – just not for me

  • Chris Beard has put fringe recruits in the lottery and has taken Texas Tech to the Finals. I thought Lubbock was a bball wasteland when Knight was there. Not so. Beard’s recruited talent, developed it and has his student body juiced for big games. He’s a young basketball 46. Last year he beat Self by 29, 25 at halftime, easily handing Self his worst ever conference loss. Self himself was 40 when he came here (?) and had made only 2 E8s.

Beard would be a grand slam hire, imo.

good thing we don’t have to worry about who is replacing him

  • The rest of the Big-12 plays tonight

Biggest game of the night: West Virginia at Texas Tech. If Tech holds serve that would put Huggy Bear 2 & 3 games behind Baylor/KU.

Baylor is at Hilton Tragic. They (ISU) tried hard to beat Auburn but came up short. Last two home games they have averaged 85 points. I highly doubt they can hang close to that on Baylor. Bolton is coming off 2 straight 20 point games, Halliburton is still not playing 100% I think. Hilton will need to bring the Magic for once this season.

hmmmm , do I dare go out on a limb ? – man I dunno. -probably really stupid , but what the hell here I go. - - I say Hilton Magic - -this is the ONE game this year that just something magical happens tonight at Hilton – long – long - -long shot I know but hey I don’t have any money riding on it SO - - BOO K IT - -run to your bookies and place your bets lmao. – ROCK CHALKALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Kind of surprised to see that Baylor is only a 4 point favorite tonight in Ames. Vegas thinks it will be a close game.

  • @Woodrow Vegas had Florida winning. Maybe they undervalue Baylor based on the past.

  • KU women trailing KSU 24-22 at halftime. Pretty ugly game to watch…both teams shooting under 35 pct from the field. Refs calling it pretty tight, maybe remembering what happened in the men’s game last week.

  • All of a sudden, both teams have found their offense. KU trails K-State 48-45 after 3 quarters. Lotsa threes falling, and more points scored in the last quarter than in the first two combined. Hawks still having trouble going inside against KSU’s bigs.

  • Boy Iowa St is really a - - - -BAD TEAM - - -A BAD , BAD , TEAM.

I am still not that impressed by Haliburton , UGLY shot - -I mean Ugly, I have yet to see him really take charge, just does not impress me , of course could be that Iowa State is soo bad , no matter how good Haliburton still makes it hard to see.

I don’t know how many times Baylor just toyed with them - -Every time Iowa State score and you think - -just need a stop , Baylor right down the lane for a lay up or little 3-5 foot jumper or IF they miss ANOTHER offensive rebound Iowa state is just a mess

  • KU shooting goes cold in the last quarter. K-State wins 69-61.

Jayhawk women now 1 and 7 in the Big XII after starting 12-0 in non-con.

  • Yep Baylor dominated Hilton Tragic.

Texas Tech hung 89 on West Virginia’s defense in a win. West Virginia now has 3 conference losses.

Texas beat TCU on the road by 1.

OU was beat by K-St in Manhattan (Lon’s group is not good).

  • @BeddieKU23 didn’t tcu beat TT last week?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 12-3 feasting on cupcakes; 1-4 since.

  • @dylans The Bruce/Snyder special. TCU has been low key great at this as well the last several years. I’m kind of surprised TCU hasn’t been better with Dixon. I guess he is just a middle of the conference coach. He seems almost locked in there.

Key injuries and athletic underperformers. I still think he can turn it around.

  • Is Beard’s success at TT cutting into TCU recruitment?

  • @approxinfinity

Maybe a small impact but I can’t remember them going for the same recruits either. Beard has signed a 5 star prospect and another top 50 national recruit this cycle. TCU has signed 3, 3 star recruits this cycle. Dixon really isn’t getting Top 100 kids, just 1 in the last 3 cycles

  • I went to the Santa Clara v Gonzaga game last night. Santa Clara is young, athletic with good size and played with a lot of spirit. (They’ll be a truly competitive team in the next 2 years as the freshmen mature.)

SCU trailed most of the game, but kept closing the gap. They lost by 15 in the end, but it was a game where they were pesky and Gonzaga had to keep reasserting itself in spurts to push the lead from one possession to three or four. Gonzaga also lost one of their starters about 10 min into the game.

Even so, it looked like Gonzaga could score in the paint most any time they wanted. Serious size inside that allowed for rebounds and tips-ins. Guards are pretty opportunistic. Lots of offensive sets that can create an easy basket opportunity. They have size, experience, and are well coached.

KU v Gonzaga would be a pretty interesting game. I would like our chances, but Gonzaga certainly looks like a sweet 16 team. They took everything SCU could give them including a good crowd, some timely 3pt shooting, numerous turnovers and lost a starter – and still controlled the game.

  • @BeddieKU23 @approxinfinity

Jaylen Fisher’s repeated injuries certainly hurt TCU’s development. He had 35 games his freshman year and showed great potential but injuries held him to 17 and 9 games soph and jr years. (He was averaging 44% – 30 of 68 – on 3pt shots jr year, and Assists/TOs ratio was 4.0. We never had to face him that year, 2018-19.)

When you plan your recruiting around your highest-level recruit ever (8th ranked PG), and he can’t finish two out of 3 seasons, it can leave you struggling which can also reduce your program’s visibility.

He has transferred to Grand Canyon, incidentally, but is apparently sitting out this season. I cannot tell for sure. He applied for a transfer waiver (he was named WAC newcomer OTY before the season!), but it was denied and according to posts on a WAC forum he hasn’t been at games and may have left. Then again, a January 7 ESPN list of transfers eligibles for next year has him listed.

Sad story altogether. Hope he gets it together.

  • @mayjay

Definitely a weird situation with Fisher. He was a talent.

If you look a little deeper Dixon has had some problems keeping players.

2016 class that had Fisher has only 1 player on the roster. Fisher & Parrish left, Bane has obviously been a really good find for him (unranked coming into College), Noi was a talent but after last year left for professional options.

2017 his top 2 signees are still on the roster, starters but Olden, Mayen, Pierce, & Rafus all left.

2018 the entire 4 man class has transferred. Kendric Davis got an immediate waiver for SMU and is a key player for them. Kadem Archie was a big recruiting win (top 100 kid) and never played. Alok and Barlow didn’t stick.

    2019- 9 new guys, 5 HS, 4 transfers.

Wonder what’s going on with Dixon

  • Something I was listening to today in Bracketology, and that is , for the people that just for some reason just want to bag On Scott Drew , saying he is just not a good Coach , talking about Baylor imploding. While I don’t have some love fest for Drew , BUT I am a guy that will give some credit where Credit is due, While he may not be an elite Coach - -Scott is far from a bad Coach what he has done for that program speaks for it’self , what I found out today:

Before Drew arrived at Baylor , Baylor had exactly ONE NCAA tourney appearance in the last 50 years. - - Since Drew has been there they have went to the NCAA tourney 8 out of the last 12 years.

4 - - Sweet Sixteens during his time there - - -2 - -Elite Eights, I would say he has done quite well since he has been there. - - Universities just don’t keep a Coach at a School for 17 years if he isn’t doing good things or showing progress.

  • @BeddieKU23 didn’t they have a coach charged last year? Plus Dixon was yo yoing back and forth about leaving.

  • Crimsonorblue22 said:

Forgot about that. Yes they got a NOA and forgot Dixon almost bolted for UCLA

  • Bruce is taking it to WVU again. WVU has fallen apart lately…

  • Wisconsin falling apart.

  • BShark said:

not anymore they’re not WV ahead

  • This post is deleted!

  • West Virginia is just so dam hard to watch. - How in the hell kind you get any kind of flow when things are so stop and go - - foul , foul , foul. - - UGLY BASKETBALL

  • Stanford stuns Oregon and Wichitards lose to Tulsa.

  • Kentucky lost too. Damn fine day.

  • If anyone is low on salt, Kentucky fans are giving it away for free on social media.

  • So far 9 ranked teams have lost today. Let that sink in

  • KSUCK loss, Marsha loss, Kensucky loss, Nova loss and UNC loss all while KU gets another W, damn fine day only missed on a Dook loss.

  • How good is Baylor?? I really thought 3 was the magic number of losses that would win the conference. That number maybe 2 or even 1 at this point. We can ill afford a loss at this point. I realize we are one game short of half way but KU and Baylor look so much better than the rest of conference right now. I also realize we only won by 3 today but I still think the laughable call on Dot made it a one possession game instead of likely a 8 point win.

  • @kjayhawks plus Doke was a no show and Tech shot above their heads from three. All things considered I think Tech is a good match up for KU.

    The tiers are definitely

    KU/Baylor

    Tech/WVU

    Trash heap

  • Honestly the league should only get four bids this year.

  • @BShark I agree

  • BShark said:

Honestly the league should only get four bids this year.

It’s all they are getting unless a team like OU turns it up.

Tech has 8 losses but likely will get in outside of a major collapse. If they get a home win over KU that probably seals the deal too

  • I think it’s going to take 16-2 to get a piece of the conference title this year and I’m not sure KU can do that with still having to go to Baylor, Tech, and WVU. They would need to beat Baylor and then split those other two all while not slipping up anywhere else.
